I could not have asked for better care for my mother and the support they offered families was exceptional. The staff here should be very proud and understand that the care they provide really does make a difference to their patients as well as the families trying to work through one of the most difficult times in their lives.

Despite a year-long and strict "no…read morehospital trips under any circumstances" came to Franciscan Hospice House because my pain was unmanageable, which I have previously gone to ER's to aid in getting some relief, but was the only met with indifferent, yet judgy doctors who labeled me as a drug seeker, and didn't care if there was anything wrong with me. Especially considering I have an issue where I metabolize medication too quickly, making it far less effective, and making me need higher doses of everything, which does not go over well in the ERs. I had to become used to the fact that if I were going to an ER visit or a hospitalization, I was going to end up going home in worse condition then when I had gotten there, pain-wise. I was told that this place would be different in hospice is different, but I still expected it when I came here a couple nights ago. I was met with absolutely nothing but the opposite of everything I just described. All this time, I've been wondering where all of the good-hearted people, who got into medicine to help others to heal their pain, judgement free, had gone, and I seem to have stumbled upon them right here at the Franciscan hospice House. I can't say enough how amazing each and every person who works here is, and I wish I could recognize it in a way where I'm able to give back some of what they've given me, but posting my truth on the on this internet website will just have to do. All my dozens of ER visits and hospitalizations I have experienced in my adult life, made me feel like I was doing something wrong when I needed and asked for some kind of pain control, to the point where I was ashamed to even ask. I unlearned that behavior here, and I don't know if I could have gone on without that changing. I found no nefarious actions, or questionable intentions in anything that is done here by any of the people who work here, it's just good people. I was unaware they still existed. It's like finding a freaking unicorn on a bit stunned and unsure of what to do next, but this seems like the right step. I almost don't want to make any sudden movements and in fear that it might spook them and everything will go back to the hellish ways that I'm used to. If you're considering getting their services, my only advice is stop waiting and just do it, because for me, nothing but good came out of it. I have worked in various facilities, specifically with dementia/Alzheimer's residents and despite the beauty of this building inside and out, the care is horrendous. It is the same exact care that you can get at any facility. Of all of the times I visited, there were always new staff members that had NO idea how to properly care for my grandfather. I spent hours going in to the facility only to care for my own grandfather rather than spending the time to visit with him and cherish those moments. I spent my time reminding the staff of the issues with his care and what they WEREN'T doing. He spent $10,000 a month to live there and in all honestly I could have taken better care of him myself without him spending $10,000 a month. His valuables were lost within the first year of him living there. He died with nothing on the walls of his room, staring into the ceiling with no one by his side. I am very disappointed in his care at this facility and do not recommend spending that amount of money because I can assure you that the money is NOT going towards those residents. Those residents spend their days staring at a TV all day with no one-on-one interaction. The nursing staff does not recommend PT or OT to help assist these residents to live a healthier/active lifestyle. My grandfather was put into a chair and thats where he ended up the rest of his days being there. The nursing staff lies to you and tells you that they are doing the proper care needed and I caught them in the act of lying. I had to remind them to donn his boots because he ended up with a nasty heel wound that the facility NEVER healed (still there when he passed away). He was chair/bed ridden and they couldn't even remember to donn his boots which is VERY important to avoid skin breakdown. I had to clean his mouth out and wash his face. I had to massage his legs because they would turn black/blue from being immobile and the staff wouldn't do it otherwise, even when asked. I had to ask them to reposition him in bed to avoid pressure sores and skin breakdown. I even asked them to give him a bath because he had a bad odor to him. To me, this is not good care. This facility needs to re-evaluate where all of that money is going and start doing their job. It is heartbreaking to go visit a loved one that suffers from a terrible disease only to find out the people that take care of him don't actually care about him, they care about their paycheck and when their time comes to go home. The staff was never attentive when we would visit. The CEO of the company only cares about opening more facilities across the state so he can make more money. We had several complaints throughout our time there and never once was apologized to or even considered for our feelings. I understand taking care of dementia residents is not easy, I can personally say it's one of the hardest things I've done but I have never turned a cheek on my residents and always did everything I could to care for them as a human being. The staff needs to put themselves in the residents shoes and care for them as they would like to be cared for. Karma will come around for those that look the other way. I recommend you think about the significant amount of money you will put into this company/facility and the type of care that truly happens behind closed doors. Think about how your loved one feels. This place is no different than the rest.

(I need 2 days a week for each injury, so I am there 4 times a week) Normally you would have one physical therapist but they were able to squeeze me in a little bit with everyone. It is a busy place for a reason. Everyone is really nice and focused on helping you achieve your goals. Yesterday I saw Preston (the owner) He was interested in how I got hurt and how to help me get better. I can tell he genuinely cares about the people who go there (both staff and customer). I originally walked in because North Harbor is close to my home but I will contue to go there because of the quality of care. I have already recommended them to someone who is hurting, because (please don't take my time slot) but they are good enough to share with your friends.

Now I'm with Emily, the Task Master. I see her once weekly. She's a bright spot in the day. I've seen her when I was super tired and when I was in more pain than usual, and she's always careful and caring and makes me laugh - likely to distract me from the pain. But she's one of the few folks I've seen in a therapeutic setting that I don't dread going to see. Two of her siblings had Alzheimer's before they passed, and we knew we needed to have a plan. We had no idea where to start. I remembered a friend who had recently gone through this with her mother. She quickly recommended I reach out to April. After spending an hour on a Saturday afternoon on the phone answering questions, April put together a plan. It was the middle of covid, but within a week she was able to find a local place that we could tour so that we could get an idea of what Adult and Assisted Living looked like. From there, she presented housing options that met our needs and finances. April was incredibly thorough, and went at our pace. The biggest thing I learned from the experience is that finding the right place is just the beginning. It is definitely a process, and what comes next is where April truly shines. She will literally hold your hand as you present this move idea to your loved one who may very well meet it with resistance. She also walks you through the steps of sorting and purging and all the things that come with moving an elderly parent. Where family members may get frustrated and impatient, April is sympathetic and understanding and right there to help. She is a wealth of knowledge and resources. In a nutshell, a move like this is not only stressful on the elderly parent, but the whole family who is involved. It is a huge decision with a lot of red tape. A third party like April helps navigate the process, and prevent unnecessary stress, misunderstandings and disagreements that can occur when families need to make these decisions together.
