We were meeting friends in the area for a meal and this place seemed like the perfect place, based on all of the wonderful contributions I could see on Yelp. We arrived early and found a spot in the very small lot they have next to the building. There were plenty of street spots open within walking distance as well. The whole area fills up starting in late morning, so I would plan your trip and know all of your parking options in advance so that you aren't driving 5 miles an hour down the road looking for parking. LOL There is usually a wait, so just be prepared for it. I was able to put our name on the list and we walked around the area. Our server was great - wow was she energetic. Zipping around, smiling and engaging with all of the customers. Our food was delicious!! The sticky bun...we managed to snag one of the last few left. Again, get there early if you don't want to miss out. The corned beef hash - amazing Biscuits - YUM Gravy - savory goodness. Home fries - flavorful and not too greasy. Eggs - perfect! Home Kitchen Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants in Rockland, and is a regular stop during my bi-annual visits to dear friends in Cushing. This cozy breakfast and lunch spot is popular with locals and visitors, so you'll likely have to wait for a table. It is definitely worth the wait, but If you're in a hurry, check to see if a seat is available at the counter. Service at Home Kitchen is warm and welcoming, and you're in for a treat if you're lucky enough to sit in Zan's area (short for Suzanne). I couldn't decide between a tuna sandwich or a grilled cheese, and she suggested combining both into a tuna melt. Brilliant! Along with a shared order of large fries, it was a tasty and filling lunch. The best part? All of it was gluten free! Home Kitchen bakes their own GF bread and pastries, and they are far superior to grocery-store GF baked goods. Even though we were sated from lunch, Zan encouraged us to order dessert, since they had a GF chocolate cupcake with salted caramel frosting. On her recommendation, we got two cupcakes to go - a GF chocolate cupcake for me, and a pumpkin cupcake with maple cream cheese frosting for my friend -- which we enjoyed later in the day from the comforts of home. We were in town for my birthday and our anniversary, and I wanted the perfect place for a birthday breakfast; Home Kitchen Cafe fit the bill! They have an extensive menu, more than just the standard fare, including plenty of my options for my partner who doesn't like sweets and isn't an egg guy. It's a popular spot and they don't take reservations (and won't seat you if your entire party isn't there), but they're very practiced at turnover and you won't have to wait too long. During the warmer weather, they have outdoor seating, but they still fit a lot of people inside. We ended up going back a couple days later for another delish breakfast. The first breakfast I had pancakes with a side of potatoes (adding peppers and onion). Word to the wise: the pancakes are HUGE so be careful with how many you order. The pancakes were fluffy and the potatoes were done just the way I like them. The second day I went with the First Wrap which was perfectly made. My partner went with the Rocky Coast one day and the Granola the next and was very happy with the add ins and how fresh the fruit was. We also visited the bakery that's down the street and stocked up on goodies. I loved the raspberry shortbread square, the ginger molasses and chocolate chip cookies, and the blueberry pie, but the cream horn pastry dough was a bit hard and the cream didn't have the right consistency. A little wait on a Monday morning well worth it for the delicious homemade breakfast we got. Another kudos to the Yelp community for helping us find this waypoint on our journey in Maine. We enjoyed the pancake, corned beef and hash, and big breakfast classic with all the meats, potatoes, and eggs one can handle. They were out of chorizo so we didn't want to try juevos rancheros without the key ingredient (to us). Would have loved to try their sticky buns and cinnamon rolls but we were already so stuffed it just wasn't possible. Sitting at the counter was a real gem. Good service and we got to hear a bit more of the local sentiment about the place. I absolutely love that EVERYTHING is homemade, even the tortillas! This place is packed during the summer but I was seated quickly at the bar and the food came out at a reasonable time. I ordered the fish tacos with sweet potato fries. It was so delicious! I inhaled everything. The avocado and toppings were all fresh too! My only complaint is the fish tasted like it was prepared with a lot of grease. Huge menu with lots of gluten free options. And their gluten free bread is homemade, which is impressive and tasty. My only complaint is that it fell apart even faster than some other ones I've had. And for sandwiches, it's just not good. I had a reuben and it was a pile of mush very fast. Their corned beef hash was homemade, so it was pretty good. I really like this place because of all the options for everyone. We arrived just as they opened - and with a seat at the bar we had super access to the coordinated performance art of a well-oiled team. A true home kitchen experience!!! There was a bit of a wait, but as they say, good things come to those who wait. We were impressed by all of the options on their menu, and were surprised when we sat down to see that had even MORE options on a specials menu. Notably, my mom got the chicken mushroom spinach crepes and couldn't stop raving about how phenomenal they were. While I was eyeing the lobster Benedict, I was pleased I chose the garden omelet + ham with a very large fruit bowl on the side. It was the best fruit bowl I have ever had!! But even more impressive was their homemade gluten-free toast... I had low expectations since most gluten-free bread is comparable to cardboard. However, this bread was thick, dense, buttery, and nearly-cake like. It looked much better than my mom's regular toast. My sister ordered a scramble with a side of show stoppin' sausage gravy. It was served in a bowl with a soup spoon, suggesting that one could eat it by itself. This was no ordinary white sausage gravy; it was reminiscent of Thanksgiving, as it boasted copious amounts of thyme and sage. Even my southern mother claimed it was the best gravy she had ever tried (she's tried a lot of gravy). We contemplated ordering extra gravy to go, but didn't think it would travel well on the airplane ride home. While we did not have the pleasure of trying the cinnamon rolls or sticky buns, the Yelp photos left us drooling. We did get an oatmeal raisin cookie to go. As expected, it literally tastes homemade. There was a cold wind coming in the side door to keep the kitchen staff cool, so I ate breakfast in my jacket. Regulars and locals all around, we were the only tourists. I ordered a huevos rancheros bowl with chicken added. With decaf. Spouse had two eggs, pancake, side of bacon. It seemed to take a very long time for our meals, but it was prime breakfast hour at 9:00 in the morning, even on a Wednesday , so to be expected. The huevos rancheros work extremely tasty, but a huge portion with some very spicy toppings. The chicken was very generous, I ate what I could but it was kind of a mixed up mess to try and bring any home. My husband devoured his breakfast with no complaint. Yelp reviews didn't let me down! We were looking for a cool breakfast spot on the drive from Portland up to Bar Harbor and Home Kitchen in Rockland fit the bill. It was crowded but the place is small so with limited seating I was worried we may be in for a bit of a wait. However, after what ended up being about 15 mins, we were seated and ready to place our orders. Being in Maine, I had to get "lobstah" so I went with the Lobster scrambled eggs with a pancake on the side (wanted some fresh Maine maple syrup as well) and my wife ordered the biscuits and gravy with eggs and home fries. The food was hot and fresh and everything was tasty and seasoned well. Our server was super friendly and the table layout created the opportunity to strike up conversations with other patrons which we observed happening in multiple instances.
