I have three weenie dogs, and we were so happy when Home Sweet Home re-opened under new ownership. Dr. Hawkins provides compassionate care that is really focused on the wellbeing of the whole family. Her office has a small town feel, she knows my pups by name, and has wonderful flexibility to ensure they have the best care. For example, my dogs have a history of adverse vaccine reactions. She ensured that they were seen in the morning (a time when she typically performs surgery) so if they had a reaction I could call her office instead of paying emergency vet fees. From start to finish, my experience with HSW and Dr. Kirsten has been stellar. I am particularly protective (and prone to crying fits) when it comes to my beloved Lunchbox. For the first time in her short life, we had to leave her at the vet's overnight for a TPLO surgery. In the lead-up to the surgery, Dr. Kirsten provided us with direct, clear information and presented us with our various options. In contrast to the clinic where we nearly had the TPLO surgery done, Dr. Kirsten and her staff were deeply understanding when I started sobbing when dropping Lunchbox off. Dr. Kirsten's love for dogs is palpable and I felt fully confident that I was leaving my precious dog in capable, loving, and compassionate hands. Lunchbox was so well cared for while at HSW and the entire staff went out of their way to avoid incurring extra charges for us, to make Lunchbox comfortable, and to make the entire experience as painless and minimally traumatic as possible. Post-surgery communication with the office was wonderful, and they fielded my stressed-out phone calls for days afterward with grace and patience. Very sad that your veterinarian service isnt about saving animals! I called 5-20 and spoke with Danielle. I informed her that my 3 1/2 month old pup that I recused has parvo and if there was any available appointments to have my pup looked at she never answered me only asking are you a client. I said no but my puppy is very sick. Her response was we only take new patients on Friday. Well he would be dead. So I will never give a positive review to the likes of you! A lot of the vets in the area come off like they are specialized brain surgeons and carry the attitudes and prices to go with it. It is hard enough for most people living in La Plata County. That is why it is so refreshing to have a simple "country style" vet in town! Recommended by Kristy over at the Humane Society, I took my pooch over to Home Sweet Home. The office is a cute little house that made me feel I like I was visiting the neighborhood family physician on the set of the Waltons. Cali was super friendly and fun and Doc Kirsten friendly and approachable. They took care of my pooch "Chewy" and got me the correct diagnosis and medicine to make him better. Their service was second to none and very reasonably priced. More important than the money is getting my little buddy better and I just really enjoyed the vibe and service. Dr. Kirsten goes above and beyond every single time. She truly cares about you and your animals, and always feels present despite having a busy schedule. I'm always amazed at her memory of my pets histories! I called Dr. Kirsten at 4:45am for an emergency visit for my dog who had an elbow dislocation two days before. She was the emergency vet on call from another vet clinic in Durango. She was extremely professional, patient and compassionate in sharing info. with me, as I was trying to make the decision on whether to bring my dog in for an emergency visit. She met me at her clinic at 6:30am, with not a shred of irritation. She shared important info. with me that I wish the former vet had re: my dogs condition and prognosis. She went above and beyond and maintained a wonderful and professional demeanor throughout this challenging experience. Highly recommended! And my dog is doing great:) read more

Home Sweet Home was recommended to me by a friend when we got our Aussie pup. He's been there three times most recently to get snipped. I have to say I've had nothing but a great experience. My husband and I were RVing from Alabama. We realized a couple days before our dogs heartworm preventative was due that we had left their Heartgard at home! I called Home Sweet Home due to the great reviews they had on Yelp. They called my vet at home and were able to sell us a month's supply for each dog. We were so very thankful. I have been to pretty much every vet in town over the 30 years I have lived in Durango. All of them have always treated me professionally and in a kind and friendly manner. I eventually settled in with Home Sweet Home for many reasons. They are almost always able to get me in within a few days, are friendly and fun, easy to get to from my home & office, and have been great about helping me with semi-emergency situations with my clients pets. This is an update to my previous review of 5 stars. On July 21, 2018, my Jack Russell terrier mix was attacked by a pit bull. I was in shock but was able to rush my dog to HSH, and walked in covered in blood and my dog dripping blood. The first response from the woman at the desk was "Did you call?", and the second woman asked, "Are you a client." Dr. Kirsten happened to come in at that time and took my dog in for treatment. There was nothing that could be done to save him. However, after being a client of HSH for several years, and being what I assumed was a friend of Dr. Kirsten, I assumed she would call to see how I was doing and to apologize for the staff being non professional. This never happened. I immediately changed to a more professional and compassionate and caring animal hospital. read more

As some of the reviews state, Dr. Kirsten and her office staff are very nice. If that is all you are looking for, go to Home Sweet Home. If, however, you are looking for a competent medical professional that you can really trust with your four-legged family members, I would urge you to look elsewhere. On multiple occasions she mishandled my dog's case - not maliciously, but it just seems that she lacks the appropriate knowledge and expertise to have her own practice. As one example, she did not inform me that I should wean my dog off of a particular medication slowly to avoid tremendous pain, but thankfully another vet let me know before any problems occurred. read more
