My dog left terrified of the owner. While I was there I watched the owner scream at my dog aggressively and spray him in the face simply because he was up on the fence excited to see me. A major over-reaction. My dog has gone to 5 different doggie daycare places in three different states and in all the others he drags me in because he is so excited. This is the only place he cowers and tries to leave as soon as he sees the owner. I've since run into one other person who also stopped using them for the same reason. She took so much stress off of us and trying to find someone last minute. I've never boarded any of my pets, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Drove down to Durango, with my dad, from Denver, to ride the train. Made a reservation the week before and it was super easy to book my pup. We dropped Smaxwell off at 7:30 with a very friendly young lady who explained everything to us and told us about posting pics on Facebook. We were a tad late picking him up because the train was running behind but they said it wasn't a problem and we got him just in the nick of time. They even allow dogs to spend the night, if the train is late, free of charge!! Since I don't speak dog I can't 100% say how Smax enjoyed himself but he seemed tuckered our and happy to see me at the end of a long day of playing! Haven't used the groomer or dog boarding. Visiting for work and wanted to pick up some treat for my pup. Selection wasn't bad. Prices what you would expect from a local business. The woman I spoke with, gave off a co-owner/sole owner vibe) was extremely short and rude. Stopped in on a slow Wednesday afternoon and she didn't have the time of day for a new interested customer. Peeped the store. Got my treats and a few "exotic" flavors. Paid, tipped, and left promptly. For the proximity to a dog park you'd think the staff would be a bit more accommodating. This is Colorado and EVERYONE has pets. Didn't have Ranger with me but I doubt my rescue would even have liked the vibe of this place. Good reviews still so I guess I had a one off experience. But I don't even want to step foot in here again. Shame. read more

Thank goodness Healthy Hounds & Fat Cats was able to accommodate my request for doggie day care with less than a week's notice! The store is located near the train depot but it was equally convenient for us on our way out to Mesa Verde National Park. When I made the reservation, I was told exactly what proof of current vaccinations I would need to bring (bordatella, parvo, distemper, and rabies) and that I could download a release form from the website and fill it out beforehand to save time the morning of drop-off. We adopted our dog less than a year ago and this was the first time we've had to leave her in the care of strangers at an unfamiliar place. I was a little bit nervous but the ladies at HH & FC were just as nice as they could be. Before I left, Hollie showed me the indoor play area and I explained that Millie prefers the company of smaller dogs over larger, dominate dogs. She said they would start her off in the puppy room, which was perfect. I thought the $24 cost for all day care was extremely reasonable. When I picked up Millie at the end of the day, she was excited but not anxious. The staff reported that she did great and played with some of the calmer dogs at the kennel. Healthy Hounds & Fat Cats is also a pet supply store. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to browse the inventory but it looked like they had food, toys and treats of all kinds. Also hanging around the shop was a sweet and friendly pug, a corgi, and a corgi/pomeranian mix. Next time I'm in Durango and need doggie supplies or day care, I know exactly where to go. read more

These folks are excellent and take caring for your pets very seriously. They have huge hearts and are mindful of keeping you abreast of your animal's behavior while in their care. This is very helpful if you have a dog that is requiring more attention to acclimating in groups. Their grooming services are wonderful as well as their boarding. We left our two dogs over the Cinco de Mayo weekend. We received them back healthy, happy, and groomed. They were both very happy puppies. I loved this place, and so did my 2 cocker spaniels. We arrived late the night before boarding the Silverton train and found out the train trip was much longer than we thought, and it would be too hot to leave the dogs in their kennel in the car as we had planned. Left a message on their phone and they called early the next morning and told us to bring the dogs right over. We made the train but returned late due to a mechanical problem. HH & FC kept the dogs overnight with no additional charge. This saved us the $40 motel 'pet fee' and made their visit quite a bargain. read more

When I think of what a small town, "mom & pop" style pet food & pet sitting store should look & feel like, I think of HH & FC. We utilized HH & FC on our recent trip to Durango. We had our dog with us, and were attending a 5 hour event. She is a well behaved dog, but we did not want to leave her alone for that long in a strange place. We decided about an hour before the event to see if we could find her a doggy daycare. We called HH & FC. Normally they want a days notice. Fortunately for us they had space for our dog. We provided her immunization records, and signed some waivers and were off. The staff is great. They were very loving and caring with our dog. Despite having other dogs to take care, they showed our dog the same love as their regular customers. The facility is very clean and cozy. They have both an indoor and outdoor area for the dogs. For a half of a day its $15. That is more than worth it in piece of mind. HH & FC also has a good selection of food and toys. They are competitively priced with PetCo & Petsmart (which are not in Durango). We will definitely be back when we visit Durango again. read more

Our 18 pound terrier mutt has never been boarded overnight before and we were all nervous about it. But this was a great place for us to lose our pet-boarding virginity. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, a large and busy play yard so Samwise could run with the big dogs (which he loves to do), and smaller indoor space for little dogs when it got too cold or busy for him. He clearly had a great time and when Bailey brought him out to us, her genuine affection for him made us feel infinitely less like we'd abandoned our guy. One tip: be sure to have vaccination certificate to ease registration and avoid annoyance from your vet clinic on the other side of the country! read more

This facility was more than accommodating and was able to take our dachshund, Bentley, even within a few hours notice so that we could do some sight seeing. Our train even got delayed and they boarded and fed our dog without any issues. Prices were very reasonable - which is why we were able to have Bentley stay here about three times during our trip. We made a stop in Durango on a three-week trip to take the famous train ride, a 9-10 hour activity. Not wanting to leave our dog confined in his small travel carrier in a hotel room that long I researched pet day care facilities on line, and identified Healthy Hounds & Fat Cats as the most convenient location. As it turned out, if it isn't the best pet boarding facility in Durango it is certainly tied for that position. I called several days before our arrival and made a reservation, having a very nice conversation in the process. From the Internet I already knew prices and required health documentation, but that was covered during the phone call so there were no surprises. Closing time is 6 pm, but Healthy Hounds will accommodate people who need a later pickup time, as we did since our train was not scheduled back until 6:15 pm. All they asked was that we come directly from the train on arrival back in Durango. Since we passed directly by Healthy Hounds on our way into town we decided to stop the evening before to confirm that Nick's (that's the dog) health records were in order (they were) and to complete all other paperwork. Next morning all we needed to do was drop the dog off and head for the train. In the evening it appeared that Nick had fared quite well. We were informed he jumped right into the pack and got along well with all the other dogs. We were also told that they don't see too many Pekingese, so the staff enjoyed having him. My goldendoodle, Copper, absolutely loves coming here for daycare and boarding and it's clear all the other pups do too. I have boarded Copper for up to a week here and the staff really gives all the dogs lots of love and play. He is truly wiped out after a day here which is what all us dog owners need sometimes. Copper also gets top notch grooming here by Kim, who does a wonderful job for a very reasonable price. The reviews don't lie! We stayed in Durango for our honeymoon over Thanksgiving weekend and decided to spend the afternoon at Mesa Verde NP. I had read reviews for HHAFC, and the Doubletree hotel also recommended them. We called in the morning and asked if there was room for our girl for day care, and there was plenty of room. There are several yards to play outside, and the critters are given constant supervision by a dedicated staff. They also take photos of the doggie group every day and post them on their Facebook page, which is great! The owner was very nice and professional, and they also have a nice store with quality food, toys and other goodies. Our little girl had a great time and was well cared for. Took my dog to daycare while on a trip to Durango. They were able to accommodate my request on only a day's notice. When I picked up my dog she was happy and very tired-a good sign that she was playing all day! Plus, they post photos on facebook so you can see your what your dog did all day and who they played with. I've been here before to do the self dog wash and had a good time. The ladies there were very helpful and I got to squeeze in on short notice and they had more tools for self bathing then I've seen anywhere else. Only thing is there is no drier to use so you're left with just using towels. The reason for the low review is because of a bad nail trim. My dog has black nails so you can't see the quick. I thought it was common knowledge that, when that's the case, you're supposed to use a grinder instead of clippers. When the man took my dog to the back room and brought her out I was horrified to see the hack job he had done. I regret not saying anything, paying and leaving. I was home when I realized that my baby was bleeding. I looked up how to stop it and everything was fine but I'll never take my dog there again. Super friendly and accommodating pet grooming and shopping! Our dog got really muddy at the dog park in the melting snow streams while we were on a road trip. Since we weren't from here, we didn't know what to do. We called around to several groomers who couldn't fit him in for hours or even til the next day. Finally we found this DIY bath place! The woman on the phone explained how that works and even offered to help us with it if our dog got spooked -- we'd never heard of this DIY bath setup before! Turns out it's super simple and SO convenient. She even had behavior modification tips for us to soothe him when he got scared of the new situation so as not to foster more fear. Apparently when you coddle and say "Oh poor baby! You're ok! It's ok!" that reinforces that there's reason to be anxious. She taught us how to not react to his nervousness but still be there for him and it totally calmed him down! That's important because he's 80 lbs and if he freaks out, things get broken and people fall down! We definitely recommend this shop to newbies who want to try to groom their animals themselves and need some gentle guidance! read more

I travelled to Durango in May, accompanied by my little terrier puppy Phoebe. I decided that after all the time she'd spent in the car (this was part of a much larger road trip), she deserved some off leash romping time. As I wanted some retail therapy myself, I checked into Healthy Hounds and Fat Cats as a solution. Phoebe and I were not disappointed! Phoebe is a regular daycare dog at her home in CA, but I'm one of those over-protective pet moms so when I called HHFC, I had a bunch of questions. They patiently covered them all, and left me with a very good feeling about their services. And even though I didn't call in advance to make an appointment, they let me bring Phoebe in just an hour later. When I arrived at their facility, I started to question my decision to spend the day shopping...I was thinking *I'd* rather stay at doggie daycare and play, too! Just a really nice facility all around...clean, bright, with several areas for the dogs to enjoy. The staff was lovely, and as soon as we walked in, Phoebe was greeted by one of the employees who sat right down on the floor and scooped her up into her arms. Phoebe was in heaven! I left knowing she was going to have a great day! When I picked Phoebe up that evening, she was happily wiped out. I know the look--she'd had a great time! I was given a report card, telling me about her day, who her BFFs were, etc. It was very endearing! If I lived in Durango (I wish!), there is no question--Phoebe would be a regular at HHFC. It's a busy weekend yet we are treated like long time regular customers and our dogs seem to enjoy the place as well. They come back to us happy and tired. We left our puppy here as we were taking the train ride. My puppy cannot talk so I do not know what kind of experience he had. But, I sure can say what experience I had. The people whom I encountered there were not very friendly. Customer service is not their thing. When I was leaving my puppy there I was not assured by them that everything will be ok. When we reached back to pick our puppy up, the young lady was not pleasant at all. We were there at 6:15 PM exact and she made it known that SHE was staying late and her tone gave us the impression that she was not very happy doing that. I thought I had already paid the extra for a late pick up so there was no need for that attitude. My kids ran up to the desk as they were eager to see our puppy. She told them curtly to step back. The whole pick up experience was not pleasant at all. On opening our puppy's bag we noticed that he was not fed any of the food we had provided for him. Why say bring your dog's food when you don't plan to even open the food provided? When we leave our dog with a care giver, we expect them to not only be good to our dog, but also to provide the assurance and the customer service expected from a service oriented business. I don't know about my puppy, but I was not happy with the customer service I got from this place. read more

I recently went into HH&FC and dropped off two dogs for grooming, one of the dogs has relatively long hair. I had asked for the dog to have a full shave being that the weather is hot. The young lady was very nice and said they could do just that with no problem so we left expecting to come back to a shaved dog. We waited hrsand finally decided to call and check on the progress..and they were ready. So i guess this place doesn't let you know when your animal is ready. :/ So we get there and the longer hair dogs hair hadn't been finished. When I asked the lady about it she seemed annoyed gave me attitude said she had nothing to do with it and requested that I talk to the groomer herself. okay I said. Another younger gal came out and said my dog was too nervous and shaky for her to shave her. I replied she isn't even done. the lady agreed and said there was nothing she could do. I do understand it can be a little nerve wracking working with a shakin dog..on the other hand this is what these people are trained to do. The girls working here should know how to hanldle a dog in this type of situation. I was pretty upset with how my animal walked out of there. When we all got into the car and settledd in for the ride home we noticed both dogs shedding really bad. Neither of the dogs were brushed or wiped down after their baths. I have brought my dogs in plenty of times and that has never happened before. So if you are looking for quality work this is not the place for you.
