I was with this vet for about four years. Over Christmas, I suspected my dog of needing his anal glands suppressed. Getting over the holidays, planning a trip, and sick from food poisoning - I head down to them and give them as many details about the situation that I can. To which the "vet" whom we don't normally see - interrupted answers to her own questions, didn't bother looking at his charts, made us both extremely uncomfortable. When she suggested taking him to the back to clip the area, my dog reacted - as well as I. I could tell by her energy I didn't want her alone with my dog. Sure enough he gets on the table to he looked at, in his butthole so he is nervous and she's shouting "sedation sedation". After getting it trimmed, she tells me he has a tumor. As my eyes water up because my 8 year old Aussie has been just diagnosed with a tumor she asked me, why I'm crying? I go on to answer this stupid question and then say, what's next. "Well surgery, do you have any questions?" I think I lost it then, I had many questions to which she wouldn't have cared or answered in my opinion. With no answers or previous information on tumors, to belittle and be condescending on someone trying to get an idea of what to do when this was a completely unexpected turnout. We immediately left, switched vets, and I have told everyone I can about this. I will beconsistently be warning people of this place. read more

Compassionate care from start to finish. Dr. Hawman is truly a bird and reptile whisperer. He is far more knowledgeable than any vet I've had experience with. Equally, Dr. Eckert has been wonderful also. What I love about them is that they don't push unnecessary diagnostics. They stick to treating the issue at hand accordingly. Extremely dissatisfied with this vet! My cat was in severe pain and limping. I brought him for an emergency vet visit. They misdiagnosed his injury because they could not get a proper angle on the x-ray. They said he would not let them move his leg to the proper position. Said he might have a broken pelvis or a dislocation. Told me to keep him in a kennel for a month to let him heal. He was not healing, pain continued. I took him to another vet to get an X-ray and did proper procedure and they sedated him to get the proper angle. The head of his femur was broken and needs surgery. If I had not gone to this vet in the first place he could have had his surgery way sooner to get relief for his pain. I requested a refund for at least the x-rays because they were executed so poorly but they basically gas-lit me and blamed me and would not give a refund for any of the services. All I wanted was a refund for the non-diagnostic poor quality x-rays but they refused. I would have been understanding if I had gotten a refund and not been blown off for several days regarding a follow-up call about my concerns. I wish they would have just sent me to another vet with better medicine in the first place instead of wasting over $700 dollars that I had to pay again at another vet for proper execution of x-rays and diagnosis. Dr Hawman saw our dog today and said oxygen bay helped our frenchie and to get her back down to lower elevation!!! He lied and she died on the drive and She was trying so hard to breathe - She seemed worse than when we left her for him to watch her. he left no meds or anything with staff when we picked her up. Just had the worst experience in attempting to book an appointment. The front desk asked if I had been there before, and I told them I had (because this is where I put my cat down) she asked for my last name. After I gave it to her, she said I didn't exist in their system. Which I explained was odd as I brought my cat there abs she continued to insist that I either had used a different last name (which I've never had) or never had gone to this clinic before. Up to and including that I didn't know what city I was calling. So, rather than move forward with finding out about an appointment, it was more important to her to use a condescending tone and insist I was wrong, rather than solve for the issue by maybe still trying to book the appointment. read more

Do not take your pets here. My pet has lymphoma and is diabetic. After voicing concerns about my dog feeling unwell, not eating, losing weight, lethargic my concerns went neglected. I was told on more then one occasion that they were to busy to see my dog. After having a tech appointment for labs I asked if they could do a urine test to check for ketones as I was concerned she may be in a DKA crisis. The tech refused to give me results and assured me that the vet would call me and go over results and make a plan. I spent over an hour there for just blood work being drawn and the tech going back and forth talking to the vet, yet still was told he couldn't see her. He called after hours-it was a Saturday and they closed early. I missed the call and he left a voicemail that he would call Tuesday when he had all the bloodwork back. No mention of the urine results. Because it was already after hours, I couldn't call back. I knew something was wrong and took her to the only emergency vet that is open on weekends the next day. Sure enough she had ketones in her urine and was in DKA. Which, in fact is a medical emergency. I am appalled that a vet could send home and not see an animal that is diabetic and not doing well. Let alone not mention the fact that she most likely was showing DKA Saturday morning. Negligence is all I can say. And Tuesday rolled around and still no call about those labs.... Not like they matter now. Currently have a complaint in to the practice manager to address this issue but will definitely not be taking my pet back there. She still isn't out of the woods, but had I waited she would be much worse off. DKA can be life threatening and vets know that. Unless you are Dr. Charles Hawman. He is a worthless piece of shit. Please take your pets anywhere else but here. read more

For many years, with many dogs, our experiences here been wonderful. We know dogs get sick, and more often than not, dog illness and sickness are often a mystery leading to their death. We never expect miracles and we do not blame vets for our dogs becoming ill and/or dying. We have always received compassion from the entire staff and professional knowledge from the vets. Every time we've euthanized a dog, they send us a sympathy card signed by staff, each member writing a nice message. My wife and I feel they care and that's what we would expect from an animal hospital. They are not miracle workers, nor would I expect them to be. They are caring humans, ding their honest best, and that's what is important to us. read more

I took my dog on Monday morning and she was dead by Wednesday night. She was diagnosed to have fluid in her abdomen and something that look like a blood clot or a tumor. According to a veteran vet, the tumor was at the bottom of his list. He was optimistic that the fluid would get reabsorbed. He sent me home with pain pills. we adored Amelia, and when she suddenly died, we were devastated. The clinic never acknowledged the death. When I called to cancel a follow up appt, the receptionist was very dismissive. Please don't take your pet there. If I had taken Amelia elsewhere, she may be alive. read more

Everyone at Durango Animal hospital was very nice when I arrived there with my dog for a check up after we had a car accident in which he was in the car . The front desk , ( especially Carol!) , the vet , were all patient and courteous , the vet was very professional and knowledgeable, took her time with my dog , examined him thoroughly and assured me that he seems fine. They even gave me a courtesy call 48 hours later to check that all is ok with my dog . Fees are very reasonable ! I highly recommend this facility! read more

Solid veterinary services when your animal-friend isn't feeling well! I've brought my birds here whenever they need treatment and the docs are really nice. The avian vet is always ready to answer questions and explain what's going on which I appreciate greatly. The ladies out front are very friendly and accommodating as well. On the down side, sometimes the avian vet isn't there and we left a message one night to get an appt the next day and we weren't called back. We ended up just calling the next day to see what was up but it would have been nice to receive a call. read more

Do not take your precious animal to this place. I've taken my dog there 4 times over the last year about because having had time pooping. The second visit I pointed out puffiness around his anus and dr mccoll took a needle and pulled fluid. Said it should be ok but to watch it. Now here we are with a double perineal hernia that she told me would cost over $5000 dollars. Well thank you for nothing. I called planned pet hood in Denver. They not only gave us a reasonable price but we're willing to get us in ASAP. I'll never take another animal to this place. read more

Our 5 year old Springer Spaniel was in great pain and vomiting & Dr. McCaw met us at the hospital in the middle of the night and after an x-ray found out it was a twisted stomach. She & Dr. Rottinghaus performed surgery on him and watched him for the next day. They are our hero's. We are not from Colorado and were desperate for help and they were perfect. They sent us home with food and instructions and he is doing well, when we very nearly lost him it could have been a very sad story but thankfully all is well. Thank you so very much! read more

My dog became very sick during the night with vomiting, trembling and stomach pains while we were vacationing in Durango. I went to Durango Animal Hospital first thing in the morning and wonderful Carol at the front desk did everything possible to work me into a busy day since I had no appointment. She asked all the right questions and worked me in. During the day, she called me to post me on timing and to see how my dog was doing. They ended up placing my dog in their kennel so Dr. Rottinghaus could see him in between other appointments. I was so worried for him in a strange place but everyone I met was so compassionate I totally trusted them. Dr. Rottinghaus treated my dog with fluids and meds and we noticed a big improvement by late afternoon. We were able to keep our flight home and now "Houdini" is back to normal. Carol called on our way back to the airport to check on him-- how NICE is that? The fee was very reasonable and I can't thank them enough for all they did when we were not their local clients.
