My sister was visiting from Alaska and I wanted her to experience a great California adventure so I booked a group surf lesson from 2 Mile Surf Shop for her, my husband, and myself. From the time we showed up the staff was super friendly and helpful. They helped us get into our wet suits and did a quick safety briefing. Our instructor was friendly and really encouraging of everybody. We had a blast during the group lesson. I'm impressed that the instructor was able to keep track of all of us. He did a great job of coaching those who were less experienced and helping them get up on their boards. All in all, we had a wonderful time and will definitely bring more people back here for lessons. read more

Love this surf shop! Discovered this place after someone mentioned surf camp for the kiddos during the summer and had nothing but good things to say, after going for years. And after a successful family surf lesson in Hawaii we were ready to take on the Northern California waters! Our 9 year old loved surf camp! And we couldn't complain, they spent all day in the water Monday - Thursday and we got to explore this little beach town I love and one day we signed up to take a lesson with them too! Today was my second time surfing with Nick at 2 Mile. He is such a joy to be out on the water with and learning from. Nick is calm, clear and encouraging as he instructs with the über chill confidence, patience and wisdom of a California beach born native. 2 Mile Surf Shop - Surf Schools Near Me - Bolinas, California

This shop has not only a fantastic selection in selling, but also rentals. When I came though without my usual board, I was able to rent a 9 foot torq epoxy. Usually when you rent from a normal surf shop they give a chewed up softie that's like 10 years old. At 2 mile, for the same price I was able to get my hands on basically a brand new performance minimal. They even threw in free wax! They also rented out a nice pair of boots to keep me nice and warm. It was definitely the best rental experience I've ever had. The shop owners are really cool and it's only steps away from two of the best longboarding spots (the groin and the patch). Two great experiences there this week: - Purchased new wetsuit for myself and my 6 year old son. Ginger was super helpful and helped me find the best fit - which turned out to be the least expensive as well. Didn't push more expensive product. - 90 minute private surf session for my wife and I with Nick in Bolinas. I've been to the 2 Mile Surf Shop twice in two weeks for Private Surfing Lessons and the experience has been fantastic. The owner Drew is an extremely nice guy with a lot of knowledge to spare, good for questions or a casual chat. The instructors I've worked with have been patient, attentive, and have given excellent feedback on my progress. The shop is just a short walk from the beach where the locals are friendly and willing to cut a beginner some slack. Great location for a surf shop! Rented at 3-hr rate: soft surfboard ($30), wetsuit ($20), and booties ($5) = $55 total. ***It's only $15 more for the full package at the full-day rate, but you probably won't need it.*** Arrived at 9:15pm and started to get suited up. We opted for the 3-hour rental, but were told to return by noon, meaning we only really had 2.5 hours from getting the gear and 2 hours by the time you consider time walking to the beach and back. As we were out on the water, we realized that we didn't have a watch. We were enjoying the surf and were certain that we had overshot our rental time, but didn't think much of it. By the time we were ready to go back in, we returned to the shop and it was fortunately only 12:30pm and there was no problem about the timing. We're relatively new so 2 hours on the water was plenty with all of the padding back out because it killed our arms! As for the facilities, there are two changing rooms to put on and take off your wetsuit. I noticed that they don't ask before flipping open the curtains to check if they're empty, and the guy even said that one of the other employees opened the curtain twice on the same woman on the same day! I realize this is because people tend to leave the curtains closed even when they're done, but I was freaking out about it when I was changing into my regular clothes afterwards. Overall, great experience, but minus one start for the possibility of having the curtain flipped open on you! read more

Loved this place! Our instructors were great, very welcoming, very approachable, and very good and providing feedback to each individual person in our class. We got a lot of great waves during out class, and each one of us was able to stand up and ride several waves by the end of the class. We were also in a great area, separate from many of the other surfers on the beach, which really allowed up the time and space to get the basics right without the pressure of being in the way of others. Loved it! I took my son and a friend to Bolinas for a 1.5 hour surfing lesson. The ladies at the shop were very enthusiastic and assisted us with their wet suits. Henry, the surf instructor, clearly loves to teach others to surf. After a few short minutes of instruction, he got them out there and they immediately took to it and spent the next hour getting on their boards, falling off and returning to the waves. #Bolinas This place definitely has its positives - good rates for surfboard, paddle board and wetsuits rentals, a short walk to the beach (not 2 miles) and they're the only game in town as far as Bolinas goes. That being said, there was 0 stoke at this store. I've seen more enthusiasm in gas station clerks. You would have thought they were renting coffins here. For SUP'ing - get there at the beginning of high tide to take advantage of the lagoon at a full tide - tons of seals, birds, and calm glassy waters to paddle around in. We put the boats in at the dock by the crab catchers and had no problems getting in or out. read more

I had a lesson with Nick, one of the surf coaches at 2 Mile. I cannot say enough good things about this dude. I stood up for the very first time with his guidance, I'm not sure I would have been able to do it without his help. Unfortunately, I started out surfing with some very bad experiences. Some of my friends took my to spots that were too advanced for my newbie self. I surfed with them and got my butt kicked by the harsh waves and was kind of left to my own devices. I actually ended up breaking my board after spending $300 on it and only surfing on it 4 times. I was a bit pessimistic about getting better at surfing. On top of that, someone who repaired my board gave me a lot of attitude and made me feel pretty bad about breaking my board. I just didn't have any idea what I was doing. I thought to myself, "Is this what surfing is really like? A culture full of people who don't want to spread their knowledge, help people or teach others?" Even after these bad experiences, I still persevered. Because the ocean is awesome and I want to be part of it. So I called 2 Mile Surf Shop and they kindly directed me to the online sign-up service for private surf lessons. I booked a lesson and scheduled to meet with Nick. This experience was pretty much life changing, no joke. Nick was there for me from the very beginning. He went over the fundamentals of standing up and really focused on the parts I needed to focus on. He watched me every time I tried to catch a wave... and then it happened. I CAUGHT MY FIRST WAVE! I was so excited I think I peed in my wet suit a little. To be able to come back from such a negative experience was so fulfilling and meaningful to me. I can't thank you enough Nick! After 5 times of totally sucking at surfing, breaking my board and being exposed to pompous, arrogrant surf jerks... I know there is hope after taking a lesson from you! Nick is not only worth the $120 for a private surf lesson, he is worth 3 x that amount. Please don't take this as a huge chunk of money to spend when signing up for surf lessons, think of this as a worth while investment to super charge your surfing performance and make it to where you feel freakin' awesome out there when surfing in the awesome oceans that we have been blessed with! **GREAT SHOP, GREAT GEAR, GREAT SERVICE** I am very new to surfing, and have been checking out different surf shops for the past couple of weeks. Each shop I went to, I felt like I was just seen as a transaction. That is, until I stepped into 2 Mile Surf Shop. Yesterday I talked to Drew on the phone for a good 15 minutes, while he gave me a run through on gear and boards. I went in today and immediately felt at ease with this shop. I got excellent service from both Drew and Mauriel. I never once felt like I was being tricked in to buying something that wasn't right for me. Drew knew I had a very limited budget, and was even able to get me a board, wetsuit, roof rack, cord, and wax ALL UNDER BUDGET!!!!! They never got upset over the many many questions I asked over the 1.5 hours I was there, and they even let my dogs hang out right outside the shop. I would DEFINITELY recommend this shop to everyone, and I will be coming back as soon as I need any other surf gear. read more

Six months ago I finished my session at Bolinas and was rushing to get home. It was past dark and I spaced tying my board down and headed down the road. I didn't realize that I lost my board for several miles. I back tracked my route and could never find my board. I called Drew in the morning wondering if anybody had found it...he said a board had been found and asked me to describe my board, as soon as I did he said he had it. He had already posted the lost board on Craig's list and had fended off several scammers that couldn't accurately describe the board. Took a lesson from Ian a few months back, and had another from Nick yesterday. These guys are super friendly, and easy on the newbies like me. Bolinas has a rep for being anti-tourist, but the guys who run 2 Mile are not like that at all, they're super nice and cool. I was really surprised when they recognized us after only 1 lesson, which was months ago. Although the water was freezing, and we were pelted with rain all morning, we still had a great time, and felt like we were in good hands with Nick. We're hooked, and will surely be back. Beginners surf class with Ben were indispensable! We were late due to traffic on hwy 1 from people gong to a huge mother's day event at Stinson beach the day before mother's day! But Ben was so nice that he made an exception for us since the class was a birthday present. His class was well worth it. He quized us on our knowledge, used visual examples to teach us, and helped us personally improve our technique. Once we got into the water he was a full blown coach: he helped us line up for waves, told us when to go, and shouted encouragements. After catching a couple of waves he told me to visualize poping up on the board and to go for it, it worked! read more

5 Stars for helping this east-coaster kick off the consummate California day on the coast. Friendly to newbies, no attitude, and reasonably priced, 2 Mile rented me a foam surfboard and wetsuit and pointed me in the right direction, all with a friendly smile on their face and despite being completely swamped with customers at 10 am. Never surfed but has been on my must do list. I am OVER 50... fit but never did this even once. Took a lesson with Nick. Fantastic. No blah blah blah - theory - just got right out and did it - he is super knowledgeable and gave me confidence - after about a half hour started to at least get the feel of what to expect - didn't quite stand up but got pretty darn close - maybe one more "lesson" or even just now able to practice myself. 2 mile is great - Drew the owner - can get a wet suit, boots, and a board and walk to the beach. Bolinas is a sleepy, off the grid town - don't expect much - this isn't Laguna beach - but thats what makes it even cooler - more of a ramshackle but LOVABLE hippy / surfer vibe. My grandkids had both been surfing a couple of times before, but my granddaughter in particular was not terribly interested in pursuing it. I get it it's Bolinas, part of the charm is keeping tourists and non bo's out. I love that at about this town. The beach is populated only by cool chill lively people, town is friendly if you choose to be chill. Walked into this joint at 4:50, said hello, couldn't find a person NBD. I'm there for a sweatshirt. It's cold, my entire sweatshirt inventory is built cold and local. 4:55 sweatshirt found, on, ready to purchase ! Alias no dude! No problem it's Bolinas lights are on doors are open push comes to I'll leave the cash on the counter. Not to be! 5:03 heeeeeeres dude! Dude says we're closed. I say no problem can I buy this really quick. "No. Take it off i'll refold it" no worries, bud. I met a friendly Bo walking his goats. Warmed my heart enough for the chill. Of note, am I a Bo? Terrible customer service. I drove all the way from Sacramento for some easy going waves, rented a cabin (gotta book like a month out) and went to rent a surf board. I've done similar trips all up and down the coast with no problems. I checked the surf report, weather, tide times etc. The guy at the counter, an old guy with pierced ears, interrupted me while I was telling him that I wanted a long board (I'm a bigger guy) with lots of foam, to tell me he wouldn't rent me a board until I went and looked at the ocean. When I asked him what I should be looking for, my thoughts were on safety and maybe he knew something I didn't, he told me "was the ocean, inviting".... bro, there's other people surfing down there, you probably rented some of them their boards so you know that, the waves are like 2-5ft high, kinda scarce but good for a long boards and that high tide was coming in about an hour but that didn't matter because I wanted to rent the board for a couple of days. He would have known that but we didn't get that far. Drive east on the 1 and get a board from Stinson Beach. These guys act like that because they're the only place in Bolinas. read more

Nick was really patient with me as I was late and missed the beach portion of the lesson after helping a kid with a broken bike and possibly broken arm down the mountain when no one else stopped. Nick rocks! My son and I surfed! And learned a ton, from someone who is knowledgeable, patient and explains things well. We'd go out any time with Nick. Our first lesson was with Ruby, and she was perfect -- so much enthusiasm and thoughtful instruction. 2 Mile Surf is the bomb, a great place to learn. Everyone there is friendly and helpful, and the rental equipment is great. And really, if you're afraid of someone accidentally opening the curtain while you're changing, you should sing so everyone knows that the changing room is occupied. I'd sing something from Les Miz, but Christmas carols would work too. Do not sing or speak in Russian, however, as people may think you're a spy. read more

My 2 girls and niece took a group class with Ian last weekend.. Found a workable section at the Patch where they were able to catch some waves without being run over by the masses. A big thank you to the 2 Mile Crew! My daughter caught her first waves, and they were cool with me paddling out for a few minutes and they pushed her into waves while I paddled into them on my board. I got to ride our first wave together, and she got to experience surfing in a fun way instead of getting "pushed" into it by her Dad.
