    false advertising on their website

Extremely bad experience here. False advertising! It is clearly stated on their website that quote "Passing this course (ASA101) allows you to rent/charter the boats from our fleet for sailing in the Oakland Estuary." BUT IT IS A LIE!!! I spent hundreds of $ taking their ASA101 course, under the impression that I will be eligible for boat rental following course completion. Then the academy arbitrarily decided to implement a policy change and requires ASA103 for rental, which asks for hundreds of more $$$. What's even worse is the way they process rental appointment is extremely unprofessional. I was denied rental LAST MINUTE, after me and my friends were already on the boat with engine started! And they kicked us out!!! Nobody mentioned the "policy change" when I registered for ASA101, or when I confirmed the rental appointment over the phone. We drove 1h there, signed the rental agreements, and were shown to the boat and preparing for departure, when all of a sudden I was told that I'm not a qualified skipper... Total disappointment and waste of time!!! I also feel slightly discriminated against at this academy. Clearly this new policy (which they claim to have taken effect since July 2020) is not enforced on everyone, otherwise it's impossible for the personnel in charge of appointments to not be aware of this. I can only assume that this new policy is applied to a selected group of students who are deemed "less qualified" than others. This academy completely ruined my interest in sailing. Will absolutely not come back.

Recently took the BK1 introductory sail course here after reading the great reviews I knew it would be the perfect place to start sailing. My instructor was Captain Dan and he was fantastic. We started with a short classroom session going over some sailing basics including some terminology and points of sail. After that we got life jackets, went to the dock and Dan began teaching us the process of the bit checklist and explained everything extremely well, answer all questions. He showed us knots, the rigging, the interior and all other components. As 3 brand new sailors we had a lot of questions and luckily Dan had a vast pool of knowledge to answer all of them. The rest of the day and the following day were spent sailing. The wind wasn't always in our favor but Dan made sure we made the best of it. I could not have imagined how great this course would be. I learned so much and felt so comfortable on the boat and handling it. Dan made us all feel very welcome, very comfortable and very at ease even if things came up. If you are interested in sailing go to Afterguard and request Captain Dan (I'm sure all the other instructors are awesome too) and you won't be disappointed!

Captain Mary is the finest of a teacher one may find in the business who has a great experience of sailing the wild waves as well as teaching, she's in business for decades & she has sailed almost the entire world she has the finest sailing experiences to share. Afterguard does have a revolving staff that at times may get diverted from their assigned tasks & at times some of the staff may get too personal in forcing their state political views onto others, such political viewpoints forcing gestures of the staff when ignored one may get to know the better side of the staff. Boats used for training & chartering are very well maintained, clean, spacious, easily operable & every skipper is well trained to address any technical or mechanical challenge that may come, there are also spare boats with skipper & crew that can quickly provide a technical or logistical backup on-demand. Every skipper on the training staff have their own styles of doing things including teaching which comes very handy during higher education classes taken here. Study materail is also very well maintained, shared & discussed and ample of examples are provided to the students both by their dedicated teacher & other teachers that students may happen to meet at the school. Teaches are super friendly with a fantastic sense of humor which keeps conversations light, healthy, meaningful & to the point.

Friendly, knowledgeable instructors made us feel comfortable & confident with our new skills. Such a beautiful place to learn to sail :-) We'll be back for practice & advanced courses. Thank you!

We…read moregathered at the dock super early and although we thought it was early, Captain Kyle was up and at'm ready to fish! He said we were in for an adventure. The great thing about DSF is that they provide all the gear necessary for your catch. We were going out for Tuna as Bluefin are now found in the waters off the west coast, we were all pretty excited to go fishing. All we brought with us was food and drinks, having everything else included was a bonus. In the event we caught anything, they'll cut, clean, gill and give us fillets. The boat ride was awesome, no one got seasick thank goodness, there's ample seating inside and out. It was super foggy in the early morning, but cleared up by the time we started. I've not been on a fishing boat prior to this trip, and I was blown away at how scenic and beautiful the water was out there. The bright sunshine gave the water a super bright blue appearance, it was cool. Captain Kyle and his deckhand got everyone rigged up and ready to fish. The Captain is youthful and took his time answering questions and giving advice. His mixture of humor and knowledge of where the fish were was certainly a bonus because as soon as lines were in the water we heard, " Fish On!" That first Tuna took everyone on board including my son Parker to reel it in ( Posted Picture). What a freaking rush. It was exciting watching as everyone reeled something in on the boat. We laughed, joked and had such a fun day out on the water with friends. On our way back in to harbor the Captain pointed out several whale pods swimming around the boat, it was a trip seeing them jump. We enjoyed our lunch and talked about who caught the biggest tuna. In all honesty, that first one was the biggest in my book. I can't say enough great things about Captain Kyle and his Diamond Sport Fishing. Reservations were easy as charters go out practically daily either 1/2 or full days. The waters off of California are changing, getting warmer, they're seeing Bluefin Tuna and Marlin so who knows, maybe our next trip we'll catch something epic! Overall Impression: A+

Prospective buyers should look closely before committing. The fleet is now made up of aging boats, roughly 4-6 years old, and the wear is evident. Inventory has reportedly been reduced from 9 boats to 5, including only 2 surf boats, while pricing remains unchanged. At the same time, members are being asked to move to an "unlimited bookings" model that still limits usage to no more than 3 bookings per month!!! Last season alone, boats experienced issues ranging from failed ballast pumps and broken amps to damaged railings and inconsistent availability. Yet despite reduced inventory, aging equipment, and declining service levels, ownership appears intent on maintaining the same pricing without meaningful reinvestment. Anyone considering joining should do their homework, verify the facts independently, and speak with former members. Membership has reportedly fallen from 42 to 17 and continues to trend downward. That kind of decline does not happen without reason.

The last time we rafted Middle Fork American was on a cold, gloomy, drizzling day in October 2019 - so we had to give it another go in warmer weather. This time around was just as memorable. Two of us in the boat ended up falling out in the water at Tunnel Chute, which happened so fast that I barely knew what had happened - thankfully, there was a nice calmer stretch of water right after through the river tunnel, so we were easily able to get back into the raft. (Thank you to our guide, Troy, for hauling me back in, and for being an awesome guide in general!) Plus this was one of the photographer spots, so the action was all captured for us to laugh about later. Later, after our tasty sandwich picnic lunch, we had a few unexpected events happen, starting from the portage down Ruck-a-Chucky Falls. Shout-out to all three guides in our group - Troy, Shea, and AJ - for handling things so calmly and getting us all back where we were supposed to be! We had plenty of calm stretches floating down the river as well. The canyon is beautiful and quite peaceful. We saw a ton of dragonflies flying above our heads, masked ducks chilling on rocks and diving underwater, and wild grapes and blackberries growing alongside the river. A beautiful spot!…read more The Berkeley Marina quickly became one of my favorite weekend spots while going to school in the city. There is something here for quite literally everyone of all ages and physical capabilities. I visited on a warm Saturday afternoon and was pleased to see there were people literally everywhere. On the land, there were dozens of children playing on the playgrounds. My friends and I were walking by the Adventure Playground (a wooden, quite industrial-looking play area), where we heard what sounded like the hammering of wood. I jokingly asked, "what is that noise? Are the kids in there building the playground themselves?" To my surprise, they literally were. This playground offers the unique opportunity for children to build and design the play area themselves. There are forts, towers, and even a zipline. This is a great way for kids to build community and work with their hands. Right next to this is a more "traditional" playground with slides, swing sets, and all the works. There are also many walking/running trails around the whole marina. Along these paths there are benches and tables where you can have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful view of the bay. You'll see people being active throughout the whole area. The main paths are paved so they are accessible to those with mobility issues. There are public restrooms available that are relatively clean. The water activities are endless here. There are kayak rentals, sail boats, and just plain swimmers. There are multiple docks to launch small crafts and to take a dip. In the shallower beachy areas, there were children swimming. If you look off to the distance, you'll see the strong open water swimmers practicing in their wetsuits. You may even see people learning how to use a hydrofoil board. People are often flying their kites off the bay's breeze too. I believe this is truly a spot for everyone who enjoys the outdoors. But, must I warn you...beware of the squirrels because they WILL run up to you and they sure aren't shy.
