I have been going to HomeGrown AthletX, their Legend group which is for seniors 65 and over, for the past two months. The classes are Tue and Thu for 45 mins and it is really great. There is a nice group of people and you feel very welcomed. The exercises are geared for the senior, not too much hard impact and everyone goes at their own pace. Phong is an absolutely amazing trainer. I'm a busy CEO with limited time and availability. He is very accommodating to my changing schedule. His approach to training is combo coach and teammate. His repertoire and diversity is outstanding from Mui Thai kickboxing to Western Style boxing, strength training to full body workouts. I'm very proud of my results working with Phong just 1 day a week. Now I'm coming in with my 12 year old son 1 extra day per week to do workouts together. I have been training here with a personal trainer, Phong Le, for several years. The gym is ultra-clean and well-equipped. It was recently expanded and looks great. I love training here. Crossfit gyms can be a little intimidating, but this one is friendly and welcoming, though with a dedicated workout vibe. The gym offers special classes (such as for seniors and young people). Crossfit can always be scaled to your ability, and Phong is particularly good at this. I am in my 60s, and training with Phong here has done wonders for me. He is the best trainer! I am stronger and more flexible than ever. Plenty of parking and easy access to the freeway. read more

Where do I even begin? I guess I'll start with the fact that when I moved further up the peninsula from the South Bay, I had to leave my old gym behind. I loved that place and didn't think I'd be able to replace it, but less than a year later, HGX has definitely secured its spot in my heart. I'd done group fitness, but never Crossfit. I was a college athlete familiar with barbell movements, however the gymnastics was all very new to me. I love the fun challenge that all the new components bring, and even more so, I love how it never gets "easier" -- you get stronger, you get tougher, you learn how to compete better, but you never walk away from a workout feeling as though it was too easy. That's not something you're going to feel at every gym, and HGX has mastered its programming to give you that sense of a positive challenge to enable you to make positive changes. What really stands out here as well is the sense of community. The athletes and coaches alike are so friendly, social, and supportive -- I love coming to noon classes and knowing I'll see my friends and be able to work out with them! The 2020 benefit is that they've managed to safely stay open -- at the beginning of the year they ran Zoom classes while we were all stuck at home, and allowed us to rent equipment. Now that we're back in the facility they keep the class sizes small, require masks when you're not in the taped off box around your personal squat rack area, have spaces outside if you choose to stay outdoors, and sanitize equipment before/after classes. They also check temps at the door and are very thorough and safe when it comes to Covid-19 guidelines. I am stronger than ever, and I have met some amazing people that not only inspire me but also make me laugh. HESITANT? Despite what media and naysayers say about Crossfit, it's actually one of the best ways to get in shape. Unlike a Globo gym, there are experienced trainers at HGX who will show you how to do every movement correctly, down to a T. You are not expected to perform at elite levels; in fact, the trainers encourage you to scale all weights and movements until you are 100% ready to perform 'RX' (prescribed weight). PRESSURE: There is little pressure here to go all out 'balls to the wall;' everyone started out somewhere and we all learned (through months of practice and training) how to get where we are today. You know why I can vouch for this?? Because I was a weakling before crossfit...I mean really, I might have gone to 24 Hour like twice a week and was a cardio queen (TREADMILL FOR DAYSSS). I was never an athlete (unless you count cheerleading LOL) and I couldn't lift to save my life. Now, 4 years later, I can honestly say HGX has given me muscle and strength I never had before! Seriously though, my girlfriends are always complementing my muscle tone on my arms and legs...thanks HGX!! WORKOUTS: A mix of cardio and strength, with weights and gymnastic style movements intertwined. You depict how hard of a workout you're going to have. There have been plenty of times where I have fallen on the floor from working out so hard! But no matter what your skill level is, you can make this a tough workout! COACHES: Just awesome. Bre, the head coach is truly an inspiration; this is her 4th year going to Regionals (similar to an Olympic style competition). This Box is her pride and joy, and you can see the passion when she coaches and performs. All the other coaches and trainers are just as great, each adding in their own method of coaching and personality. Luis heads up the Endurance club (for the runners out there), Alvin, Ian Matt and Patrick teach classes as well and make it fun and challenging, and Lisa will introduce you to all the movements you will be doing in the Fundamentals series (and she's quite entertaining if you ask me). WHAT IT'S LIKE: This isn't just a garage with some equipment; this is a straight-up legit CF box! The coaches put some serious time and effort here making this place a gym you want to work out at! Some awesome amenities include: -TONS of Pendlay bars and weights -6 Row machines -Pull up and muscle up bars -Two bathrooms and two showers -Space to stretch and roll out (It's huge!) -Apparel and performance drinks -Lots of friendly people who like to work out! They've gotta great facility, great workout routines, this is a place that made me feel worked out yet refreshed. I did the six o clock boot camps so I haven't gotten a chance to get the full feel of the place but everyone here seems so nice and easy to talk too which helped so I get my workouts right. The trainers here didn't have too prove themselves I could tell they aren't lazy , they practically worked out with me unlike a lot of places I've been to where its just do this do that. Family atmosphere, great results. My evidence for the family atmosphere? I go here. My wife goes here. My son goes here, and we all love it. The owners' families work out here. Many couples, several young adults and their families go here. Brothers, sisters, friends. It's really a kind, accepting place, which tends to mean you want to go the gym because you're a part of a team. OWNERSHIP Breanne Feudale is the owner - she's an accomplished CrossFit athlete, and her first lieutenant, Kent Kitigawa competed far into the masters category this year for the CrossFit Games. They both care *a lot* about the experience we all have at the gym. ...and it shows. They treat us all like customers first and athletes second. My best evidence for this? The owner, Bre, is 30+ weeks pregnant (with twins!). The gym threw her a baby shower, which I wouldn't normally get to witness because I'm a dude. BUT my son left his baseball bag in my wife's car, and I had to go to the shower to get it. I rolled up and was blown away at the number of our members who came out to throw Bre a baby shower. It just felt like we were all rallying around her, so excited for this next chapter in her (and her husband Mark's) life. I'm not sure that this kind of community exists in many places. Not sure how many places a group of paying customers are so willing to extend themselves for the person to whom they are paying for a service. I think that says a lot about how we feel like we're treated as customers, sure, but as PEOPLE more than anything. We love our owners! COACHES They employ a stable of really strong coaches with diverse backgrounds. Examples: - Phong is a mobility expert (ie yoga) - Sara is a former Marine and super strong weightlifter - Jazmine is an energetic FORCE in the gym, a thorough teacher, whose programming leaves us all exhausted and ready for more. She's the embodiment of encouragement. - Tom is also a strength coach at Berkeley and keeps us all laughing with his pointed aphorisms - Rob makes it super clear that he cares deeply about your performance and experience. I asked my son, a member, "if you could talk about one coach, who would it be and what would you say" and he said "Rob - because he's a chill-ass mate." I haven't worked with a coach that I haven't liked... a lot. The coaches are highly skilled at "scaling" workouts - changing variables such as weight, repetitions, and movement aspects to make sure everyone can get a great workout no matter their ability level. Can't do a pushup? They know how to give you something similar that you can do. GREAT at pushups? They know how to give you something more challenging so you can keep progressing. They prioritize safety and work hard to make sure we all have a great experience. OTHER MEMBERS Finally, I thoroughly enjoy my fellow members. We range from former college athletes such Nia, Colton, and Justin to old bastards like me (and one or two others ;-), pregnant women, people with physical disabilities, new moms, former gymnasts like Katie, high tech workers like Eric and Kara (power couple :), blue collar studs, entrepreneurs, software developers, podcast hosts, financial analysts, cops, consultants, firefighters, and Marines. We treat each other with respect and many of us have become friends. Let me preface this review with my background as an experienced personal trainer (not at all meant to be a personal showcase!). I have multiple training certifications, 10+ years and over 10,000 hours of personal/group training experience with athletes of different skill, mobility, strength and age levels from teens to the elderly. I currently run my own gym and participate in CrossFit classes at Homegrown as a "hobby." Two years ago (2015), I began looking into CrossFit gyms around the SF Peninsula trying to find a gym that had a strong interest in maintaining proper movement standards and certified coaches with integrity. Finally, I wanted to train at a gym that had an overall positive community vibe and people that I wanted to be around and train with. After visiting a few CF gyms on the peninsula that I found underwhelming, I found Homegrown. The members and coaches were welcoming and friendly. It didn't take long to feel like I was one of the regular members! Breanne, the owner/coach, is someone that I definitely wanted to work with because she is approachable, an all-around great person and strict when it comes to maintaining high standards of movement integrity, something that I feel is severely lacking in the training industry. All of the coaches adhere to this standard as well. Each one of the coaches brings a unique skillset and passion for CF that is immediately evident with your first class. The environment is nothing but positive and encouraging from people who all want to be better in every way! My first CF Open participation was last year (2016). I didn't know what to expect but I signed up anyway. I was so glad I did because the energy and enthusiasm all the members and coaches bring to every Open workout is contagious! So many people hit PRs (personal records), accomplish amazing firsts like muscle-ups (very difficult!) and push themselves to levels of fatigue they never thought were possible. All of the movement standards for every workout are established by CF HQ to make the Open a legitimate athletic event. We all want the standards maintained because we are ranking our scores and times against people around the world in an atmosphere of good-natured, competitive fun. It's only natural for people to see where they are ranked, right?. From the first to the last athlete to finish, the Open is about camaraderie and shared toil! I have never seen anyone harassed or been personally harassed by anyone in the gym. When someone feels that way during the Open, it's likely because that person is not meeting the movement standards, i.e. squatting below parallel. It's too bad that someone not meeting the standards and being called out by an objective judge has to resort to writing a negative review in a feeble effort to discredit an otherwise 5 star gym and community. I can say with absolute certainty that Homegrown is the best CrossFit gym I know of the 7 I've visited. I won't be going anywhere else. If you're thinking of trying CrossFit, start here, you will be happy you did and only sorry that you didn't start earlier. read more

I'm not naturally athletic. I wish I was so I didn't have to work as hard to stay in shape. That being said, things take a lot longer for me to get. I am so grateful that Homegrown has such professional instructors who can push you further than you thought you could go and still help guide you in keeping your body safe in all of your mechanics. I am a total Crossfit beginner and I find myself day dreaming about what the next WOD will be. I really get my butt kicked and enjoy it at the same time. For other beginners such as me, their fundamental series is so personal and really gears you up for the regular sessions. I procrastinated in signing up for Crossfit for so long because I felt that I needed to be stronger before working out with the big dogs. What I love is that everyone is on different athletic levels and until you're just in there doing it, you can never mentally prepare yourself enough. The gym is clean, there are tons of class times including a full Oly Lifting and Mobility class, the trainers and people you work out with are extremely helpful and great, plus the location is great. If you are new to the area and looking for a solid CF box, or just new to CF in general, this is the place for you! It is more spacious here than any of the other CF boxes I have seen in the area. There is plenty of equipment for everyone, plus showers. The coaches are friendly, motivating, and knowledgeable. Co-owner and coach, Breanne Feudale, has been to the games multiple times. She made it to the regionals again this year! Additionally, they offer barbell and endurance training. They also have classes for kids and teenagers. So this can become a family routine! For any who are hesitant about CF, I say just give it a try! I was one of the wary ones, but now I am stronger, healthier and love exercising! I go to HG for personal training with Phong Le and I can't say enough good things about him. He's not only a great trainer but a great teacher. We incorporate strength training, cardio , stretching and other body work into our sessions. Phong is very knowledgeable in all areas of fitness and he's helped me more than he knows. I've visited several different CrossFit boxes in Union City, Fremont, San Francisco, Milpitas, San Carlos, Pleasant Hill and Delmar over the past 5 years and while each has been an enjoyable experience, HomeGrown CrossFit (HGX) in San Carlos has become my CrossFit home. Over the past couple years as a member I have seen the box grow tremendously. Originally only 1 space and now nicely spread-out over 3 spaces making HGX quite the facility. There is more than enough equipment for each class and a huge plus that I enjoy is the rope climbing and rowing. Many boxes don't have enough rowers for a class or the option of rope climbing due to low ceilings. The trainers are experienced, educated and motivating. They make sure to warm the class up together and go through the proper movements before each workout. It is stressed that proper, safe form is more important than rxing a wod. During the wod, the trainer will walk around ensuring everyone is lifting properly and encourage us each to give it our best efforts. I love that there is a noon class and that HGX has two nice showers. I work long hard hours and it's nice to escape to HGX for an awesome wod with some of my most favorite people. I have made so many new friends over the past years as a member at HGX and thoroughly enjoy spending my lunch hour sweating with them becoming stronger, better people all around. read more

I have been a member here for over 3 years and it is always fun to show up for the wod of the day. The workout are challenging and can be modified to fit anyone's level. The coaches are great at working with you and making sure you are doing all the exercises right. It's a very inclusive community and all the members, coaches, and owner's are very friendly. Before joining, I looked into other Crossfit gyms in the area. HGX was the place that was the most responsive and welcoming to a new member by far. Been a member for a month now, and I have nothing but positive remarks. I originally chose this one over San Mateo Crossfit due to its flexible schedule. At first, I was scared because each day would be a different instructor. But that fear quickly subsided as all the coaches actually care about their students. They'll always greet you by name when you walk in the door, and they remember what issues you have with certain movements and take extra care in making sure beginners get the proper form correctly. The best part is that it feels like a community. These are people that I would hang out with (if I had time... unfortunately right now I don't) and would go support during their Crossfit competitions. First, I joined young sports league teams which I played swimming, baseball, basketball, ice hockey. I played ice hockey for 10 years. In my high school I played track and field, soccer and football. Right now soccer is only sport I love to play for the city leagues in the Bay area. Yet, I am a full college student for College of San Mateo. That mean I had no time to play soccer for the city league in the bay area for fun. However, I started crossfit member for Home Grown Crossfit (HGX) for almost one year and 4 months now. I loved it because the crossfit members and coaches I met there are awesome. They all are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, supports, welcome, and FUN! Fun is the important you need it. I enjoyed it. I couldn't help myself stop going workout there almost everyday when I made my time from school and work. "CrossFit" is the word I learned a lot about it while I was working out in the gym there. CrossFit doesn't mean I want to becomes a bodybuilder. Crossfit creates athlete. The workout of the day (wod) they set everyday are kick my butt but at the same time it was fun and challenge to do WOD. It changed my life. Also, the old gym they had it before call, "San Carlos Crossfit" but they changed it to Home grown Crossfit (HGX) which mean the gym they changed into bigger and space. Swim, bike, run...Swim, bike, run...and repeat. It had become a redundant routine and I hit a plateau. I was not getting stronger, just going through the motions. I needed something different and many friends urged me to try Crossfit. When I started at Homegrown 2 years ago, the personal attention from the coaches and support from the other athletes made me feel welcome and a part of the group right away. Do not feel intimidated if you are new to Crossfit, we all started at the beginning. I had never done the Olympic lifts or many of the movements before, but it was not a problem. These coaches are excellent when it comes to teaching the proper technique, identifying what weight to start at and "scaling" the workouts according to each athlete's ability level. It does not matter if you are a Division I star college athlete or a Crossfit beginner and this is your first time picking up a barbell, Homegrown Crossfit will work for you. You will get stronger and you will get results. But be warned, it is addictive. read more

I have been working with Phong Le for a long time. He is an incredible trainer. Through our training sessions I have developed strength, increased mobility, and agility. He has kept our sessions interesting, each one is unique in its own way. We have done everything from yoga, Olympic lighting, riding big wheels for our core and coordination, kickboxing. If you need someone that will take you to the level of fitness you have been waiting for you should try a session with Phong. read more

I think this is a great gym with great people but it was just not for me. I used to train with a personal trainer and was still pretty new. I wanted to try CF so with my experienced partner and another friend, we popped into HGX. It was great, the fundamentals were amazing and we attended a bunch of classes but over time, it became mentally draining because everyone at this gym was CF athletes and I always felt unseen/incompetent at the end of the workout which was the complete opposite of what I thought I would accomplish in a CF workout. I gave a chance to most of the trainers there, my absolute favorite is Julie because she takes the time to teach you. I did love the classes where there were lesser people so you did not feel like you were competing and being a hindrance in the class. All in all, I would say, this isn't very beginner-friendly. Probably the best place if you are already into CF and fit. I ended up losing motivation for the most part. read more

I was a member of the gym for several years and it wasn't that bad at first. However around the crossfit open I found myself being harassed by some members of gym. These members were close to the owner and when I tried to rectify the situation I was basically told to "just deal with it". This ultimately led me decide it just wasn't worth it to come to the gym everyday wondering what harassment awaited. I shouldn't have been too surprised. While many crossfit gyms are cliquey, this one seemed particularly so, with personal friends of owners getting special privileges. One obvious example was certain people could come in whenever they wanted to do their own lifting. They took up racks and disrupted the classes. There wasn't really an inclusive community. Instead if you were friends of the owner you could do what you want, and if you weren't your concerns went unaddressed. $200 a month is too much money to spend on a gym where you're treated like a second class citizen. There are boxes all over the peninsula, probably best to find a more professionally run establishment. read more

I've been a member of HGX (formerly San Carlos Crossfit) since it opened 4 years ago. The place continues to grow and change, but all for the better. The staff is awesome, very knowledgeable and approachable. Crossfit may seem like it's only for the super elite, but I promise you HGX has something for everyone. After being a garage CrossFitter for 4+ years, I finally walked into a my first box at Homegrown not knowing if I'd like it. The first day had me hooked. I'd been consistent on my own, but I didn't know that what I'd been lacking was the community. I LOVE the coaches and feel their knowledge in training and coaching proper form (over and over for me) will help me stay safe and make gains. I look forward to seeing my classmates and suffering alongside them each day. My 12yo son now comes with me to classes and is just as excited as I am about the WOD and seeing the faces of our friends in class. The facility is a typical box with tires stacked out front, a large, open room inside for activity, ample rigs for pull ups, a sufficient number of racks for weights and bars proudly displayed on the wall, plenty of rowers, and ropes/rings hanging from the rafters. Despite so many people rotating through each day, it's oddly very clean! I felt welcome on day one, and I've only seen new people welcomed with open arms. Though it's a group class setting, I feel like I get personal encouragement, coaching, and instructions. read more

I had been going back and forth in my mind wondering if crossfit was for me. Pretty average guy, played a few sports, but nothing as intense as crossfit seemed. But, I worked up the courage and made the call to sign up for my first training session. I don't exactly remember what my first day at Homegrown Crossfit was like, but it went something like this. I walked in for my first foundational training class with Ian, no doubt was a little nervous because I had no idea what to expect. He had me doing some sort of warm up and then we went over different forms. Walking out of the gym that day I was tired, but the kind of tired that gets you excited about the positive changes that the next couple of months are going to bring to your life. When I look back at the months I've been going to Homegrown (started in October 2014), I don't remember the workouts we did each day or the time I spent tirelessly trying to get that bar over my head. Although the workouts are great! I remember the friendships I made in class. Actually being missed because you hadn't shown up in a few days at your regular time to workout. I'll remember the personal accomplishments, like getting my first bar muscle up, and the accomplishments of the people in my workout class (don't forget to ring that bell when you PR!). My one reservation about joining was the cost. However, joining Homegrown is much more than joining just a gym, you're really joining a community. Join our community where I'm constantly inspired by people whose ages range from 18-60 deciding now to get healthy. Where the coaches are there to see you become your best version of yourself in a safe environment. Where you can participate in a variety of crossfit events, workout classes (more than just crossfit), and social opportunities (lots of bbq's!) to not just be a gym member, but to be a part of the community. I was new to CF when I was introduced to HomeGrown by a co worker. While I'm no longer a member, I know I am always welcomed back with open arms. The gyms owner truly cares about all the members and makes sure to connect with everyone on a deeper level. I have been a member at this gym for almost three years now. Since I have been there the gym has expanded and new equipment has been bought. You never feel like it's too crowded. There are so many classes offered everyday that the class sizes are never too large. The workouts are always challenging but the trainers offer scaled options so that no matter what level you are at you can do every workout. If you join and come consistently you will get stronger and see improvements. The community at the gym is very welcoming and encouraging. I love Homegrown Crossfit. Everyone is friendly and people really have a good time here. The gym is clean, spacious, and well-maintained. I especially like how all the trainers stay actively engaged to make sure I maintain good form. This is very important to me since I'm 47 with various injuries. It took me a while to get my groove in Crossfit, and everyone has been supportive of going at my own pace and building up my capabilities. I'm really happy to have found Homegrown and Crossfit in general. I had completely burned out on the regular gym atmosphere (muscle-specific weightlifting, cardio on machines, occasional group class...). As a member for over 5 years it makes me incredibly proud to see how far homegrown crossfit has come. Starting off as a small box to expanding its area and getting more equipment it's makes it's easy to see why people keep coming. I have grown both in strength and in knowledge of my own achievements and nutritional goals. All coaches listen well and understand you fitness goals, they give you the push you need as well ass keeping you humble.
