This organization is as good as it gets as far as pet adoption organizations is concerned. I've worked with them twice through adopting our family's two furry friends: Katie (a sassy but so adorable feline) and Wyatt (not your typical yappy Chihuahua). If you're looking for cats, go to Pet Food Express at Slatten Ranch on Saturdays from 12-3. or Pittsburg Petsmart on Sundays from 12-3. They have different kinds of cats and kittens with different shapes and colors just waiting to be loved. After a short screening application, your new friend is yours! Cats and kittens have an adoption fee of $100. If you're looking for dogs, they don't bring them on site. Instead, they're all at a foster house in Brentwood. Man, I've never seen so many dogs in one place! Small and big dogs alike! You can tell they're well taken cared of at Joy's house. Usually you can just sit there, observe all their personalities, and pick from there. I'm sure one will steal your heart like my Wyatt has. I can not accurately express my frustration with Homeless Animals' Lifeline Organization at the moment. We attended the National Adoption Weekend event at the Petsmart in Antioch today in hopes of bringing home one of the mixed Corgi puppies this organization is looking to place. Shortly after meeting said pup and him briefly interact with our two current rescue dogs (which were pleasant and calm with happy wagging tails) we were informed that we would not be able to adopt from H.A.L.O. because one of our current dogs "looks like she's part Rottweiler" and that we should look around at the other organizations booths to see if they would let us adopt even though our dog looked part Rottweiler. I have personally never experience such a breedist mentality ever before, and I was shocked to hear this coming from the mouth of someone at an animal rescue. I can not fathom this actually being a policy for your organization (because it is just that ridiculous) and IF it IS actually a policy, this prejudice should be blatantly laid out in the policies section on their website or expressed up front when individuals inquire about an animal. We were also informed that the issues with Rottweilers or Rottweiler mixes were another reason your organization doesn't take them in yet it is blatantly stated in many locations that you are an "non-profit all breed dog and cat rescue". Aside from the fact that the reason we were not eligible to adopt was just absurd and upsetting, we also drove well over an hour each direction to this event and would not have wasted our time coming out to an event for such a prejudice group. read more

We adopted 2 kittens from HALO Antioch branch. When we took the kittens to the vet they were found to have ringworm. We left voicemail messages for the HALO staff, as we felt it was our responsibility to inform them so they could halt adoption and treat their facility. We had initiated treatment of our kittens as we felt attached to the and could not think of returning them. After receiving no response from HALO we obtained email addresses and contacted them via that route, and the response we got was shocking. Here are some exerts from the cat program manager, Verlene Leonardo: - yes, this seems to be the year for ringworm, we are getting so many in with it WHY AREN'T PEOPLE BEING INFORMED AT THE TIME OF ADOPTION AND WHY ARE THEY NOT TREATING - I find it hard to believe someone is willing to stiff a rescue center WE PAID BY CREDIT CARD AT THE TIME OF ADOPTION HALO makes no apology, accepts no responsibility, does not indicate they will halt adoptions until they can confirm their network of caregivers is free of ringworm. The adoption costs are not cheap, and I would recommend that people be weary before working with this organization. As a minimum, take your newly adopted pet to a vet, immediately, and have them tested. Ringworm is not easy to eradicate. Note, I am not making an issue of the fact that the kittens, that supposedly had been dewormed, were also infested with worms. read more

Adopted two kittens from this rescue. From Verlene in particular and it was a terrible experience. Verlene knowingly adopted both kittens sick with diarrhea. As any responsible pet owner would, I reached out to the foster and followed her advice and took them to the vet for treatment. Both kittens did not get better. Soon after I became sick. After weeks of nursing myself and kittens without any good results, I reached my limit. I asked Verlene for help but she refused to help and instead accused me of not doing anything. After an extensive vet bill and weeks of trying I attempted to return them. Which she also refused initially. Long story short, Halo indeed has wonderful foster parents who help kitties find good homes. Verlene is not one of them. read more

We had been looking for a dog or two to join our family (young professionals with two children) for several months. Each weekend we had been going to the shelters in our area (Marin) and could not find the dog we wanted. We also had applications in at several rescues but because what we wanted is so in demand (young rehomed dog, good with kids, larger breed) it was proving to be difficult. I decided to start looking a bit farther out and am so happy that we found Joyce and her team of volunteers. Joyce takes in many many dogs into her home both big and small--and they are all well taken care of. Our experience with her was better than at both Milo and the ASPCA. The kennels were clean and they knew a lot about dogs personalities etc. She had several dogs that were just what we were looking for and we ended up adopting two. Our new family members are a perfect fit. I highly rec this place it is worth the drive! read more

We got our kittens through H.A.L.O., who have been fostering them (and their momma and two other siblings) since they were born. In fact, at last count they were fostering 28 kittens + cats until we took home our two furbabies. It's a long drive for us (about 3 hours roundtrip), but we loved visiting them and their playmates - it was kitten heaven! We even got to see some 12-hour old newborn kittens :) The fosters also have older cats and a couple of dogs, which lets the kittens be socialized to other cats, dogs, and humans - perfect for if/when we get a dog later in the future. Our kittens are still getting used to us (they have each other to play with and can afford to ignore us, haha), but they've been socialized well and have been well-cared for. Two BIG THUMBS DOWN! My dog escaped and lost her tags in the process. Thankfully, she's micro-chipped! Unfortunately, whoever found her early in the day drove her 20 miles to the care of HALO. That's where the nightmare began. Their member had a chip scanner, but still took our dog to see a vet - though there was no reason as the dog was not injured and, had she called, we would have retrieved our dog within 30 minutes. Instead, the HALO person waited until after 7pm to call and advise that she had the dog. Then she immediately began to interrogate me about my dog's escape. She wanted to know how it happened, why it happened, etc. and implied that we were deficient because our dog had escaped. The HALO person then demanded that I pay her $50 for the cost of the shots the dog have been given at the vet before she allowed me to retrieve my dog. When I advised that we would not reimburse her for something that she need not have done, she became angry and said that she would take our dog to the shelter and have her impounded if we didn't pay up. We called the Sheriff who advised that the woman had no legal right to hold our dog or require money (since the vet visit and shots were not necessary or reasonable). The Sheriff called her and told her so as well. We retrieved our dog the next morning without incident. Had the horrid person from HALO had simply let us know where to retrieve our dog from the beginning, it's likely we would have offered her or the organization a reward in excess of her ransom/demand. But it will be a cold day in Hell before we allow our dog to be held hostage like that by some wannabe do-gooder that HALO has on their team. read more

Just saw the sad news story on how your workers dog-napped an adopted one eyed poodle. You were on her property and willfully took the dog without her permission. The woman seemed devastated and appeared to take good care of the dog. Your policy that the adopting person must stay home is ridiculous. I don't see how you are able to adopt out any of your animals. Unless they are wealthy and don't need to work how can loving families whether with kids, a couple or a single person ever get a chance to adopt from your organization. Potential adopters beware that after you are bonded with the pet these people may actually take it away. read more

I'm revising my last update of HALO because after several talks with a board member, they have agreed to make some changes in their practices. They truly are a wonderful organization and do their best to save as many animals as possible, I wouldn't hesitate to adopt from them in the future. read more

We have adopted both of our dogs from HALO. Gabe a 105 pound yellow lab, eight years ago and Lulu a 70 pound black wire haired pointer, five years ago. We are ready to add to our canine family and again contacted Joyce at HALO, I know she will find the perfect match for Gabe and Lulu. We have been able to view the dogs at HALO house and on Petfinders, Dottie looks like the one. read more

Fantastic rescue organization. I have dealt with several rescue organizations over 20 years of dog ownership and I have found HALO to be one of the nicest and most understanding of dog behavior and acclimation processes. We have adopted two dogs in the last year from HALO and I could not be happier with the care and attention to ensuring a successful adoption process. Star and Pat are the ladies we have dealt with most and they are both fantastic. Other volunteers are great as well, I just do not know any of their names sadly, but everyone I have come in contact with has been fantastic. read more

This is a wonderful, fantastic organization!!! They are THE primary dog & cat homeless and adoption organization for all of eastern Contra Costa county. The dear lady who has been the driving force behind this organization for many years, Joyce, is such a sweetie, loves these dogs & cats so much that she has even used her own yard and garage as part of the shelter. You can tell very quickly that this is a labor of love on her part. The animals are kept so clean and sanitary that it is amazing. Equally amazing is her generous heart, and her patience and love for these poor homeless animals! I have adopted four dogs in my life, and they have been THE very best, most appreciative, loving dogs that I have ever owned!!! (Just one of those dogs not only saved us from dozens of rattle snakes that found their way into our yard, ... but also woke us up the fateful night our home's chimney caught on fire, thus saving us from burning to death, and waking us up in time to put out the fire before our home and everything inside of it burned to the ground!) Are you thinking about a pet for your child? Come find one here at HALO. If you are sad or depressed, come adopt a pet from Joyce at HALO. If you are alone or lonely, perhaps grieving the loss of a loved one, try taking the focus off of yourself, and adopt a pet from Joyce at HALO. You will be amazed how a pet will give you back ten to twenty times more love that you can ever begin to give them. I should know. I had my father, mother, brother, a couple of aunts, a couple of uncles, and a couple of cousins all die within a short time period. Neighbors friends would see out for walks, and tell me that I needed to find a wife or a dog to go on my walks with. Since I couldn't find a wife, I decided to rescue a dog. It was one of the very best decisions I've ever made! That precious dogie is so loving I don't know how I ever got along without her! Now if I could just find a wife as affectionate, playful, loving, forgiving, and overjoyed to see me when I come home from work, as my precious dogie is!!! ;-) Rescued pets just seem to have more character, more smarts, and sooo deeply appreciate and love you for rescuing them. And I can think of no better place to rescue or adopt a loving pet from than from HALO in Oakley. If you are not sure you want a pet, at least consider it, or better yet, go take a look at the dogs and cats at HALO. Or refer your friends & relatives there. Also, any of you pet lovers, if you are looking for a truly worthy cause to financially give to, I am sure they could use your your financial contributions, or regular financial partnership. A truly caring organization that stands by their mission! Star helped me with a dog that needed some help and she was so great in helping the dog get acclimated until he finds a forever home. I highly recommend adopting through Halo, if my dog didn't have "only dog syndrome" I would adopt from Halo in a heartbeat! I really do love them after seeing how much they do! read more

My husband and I attended an adoption event on 2/14/15 and it was the most unorganized fiasco I've ever seen. I traveled a long distance so I could bring home this little puppy, that I was so excited and anxious to adopt. I had been searching for quite awhile for this certain spaniel mix breed of dog. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her picture. I immediately contacted the group and told them I was interested in adopting her. I asked them about meeting her right away and they told me I had to wait until Saturday, as they would have her at the PetsMart, in Antioch, where I could adopt her at that time. I thought no worries I didn't mind traveling the distance. I arrived early and anxiously waited for them to put her in her designated cage. Little did I know or even think that I would go home empty handed and heartbroken! Little did I know that when I emailed Halo with the puppy's name, that I was interested in, that I was just one of many others, wanting the same puppy. I'm sure this organization would know from past experiences like this, that they need to organize a system by date and time that emails arrive of the interested parties who are wanting to adopt these puppies. For each animal (name of puppy), they have up for adoption. take the first 3 emails and and the time and date they were sent. I'm sure that 1 or 2 out of those 3, will have adopted that puppy. I know that there were others besides myself that left your event upset. I was told 87 emails were sent to you about this event and there were only 12 to 15 puppies up for adoption. That tells me there weren't enough puppies for everyone, thus having upset people, walking away empty handed. Your organization really needs organizing. read more
