Pets in Need is a wonderful resource in our community. They offer low-cost spay and neuter clinics, which are very popular. They provide a second chance to animals that have gotten lost, or were abandoned to find a forever home. Many wonderful people work and volunteer here. At times the atmosphere is fairly dysfunctional. If someone on staff decides they don't like you (for literally whatever reason, you are having a good hair day, you smiled, etc) they will try to humilate you and you will notice a distinct lack of service. Don't take it personally, Unfortunately there are some bruised egos here and it comes off very snotty at times. It isn't you. I wish they would address this toxic aspect, because it would help the animals much more!!! The Redwood City Location is MUCH MUCH more functional and professional. It's the Palo Alto location that is full of a strange cruelty. read more

Overall had a good experience here, staff was friendly and helpful, and adopted a very sweet and kind kitty. HOWEVER, my cat came home with very long, untrimmed nails that kept getting caught on things (which if you're bringing a cat into a new environment, the last thing you want to do is have to trim their nails). In addition, I developed ringworm about a week after adopting my cat. Took the cat to the vet, she has ringworm spores all over her. She didn't have signs of ringworm so it's totally possible they didn't know, but many shelters do lime-sulfer dips before sending cats home, especially if other cats in the shelter have ringworm. read more

Fosters and adopters beware. This organization is highly negligent about their animals -- I fostered a puppy recovering from a leg surgery with serious behavioral concerns. They sedated him, did no vetting, and sent him home with me with no disclosure of his behavioral concerns. They gave me a collar when he is an extreme leash puller and nowhere for him to sleep. He was actively hurting himself when his sedatives wore off because his dose was clearly messing with him and I said I was not comfortable holding onto him out of fear of not being able to provide him what he needs. He was lunging extremely hard on the leash (again with a collar, not a harness), had no place to sleep, and was jumping on a leg that had gotten surgery. This organization did zero vetting or disclosure and said "we hoped he would be different in foster and are sorry you had to be an experimental trial!" Which is grossly negligent of the dog's wellbeing and entirely ignorant of his needs, as well as dismissive of how stressful it can be for an animal to have to readjust again. They clearly knew of his behavioral issues but wanted to offload him to a foster. His separation anxiety, jumping, and aggression was nowhere near normal levels and definitely a side effect of his medication or being under stimulated at the shelter. But when I asked people at the physical location about his history, no one seemed to have spent any time with this dog. Clearly he was being neglected. When I returned him, no one asked me what I noticed about his behavior or had any intention around finding him the right environment. I called the person who's in charge of foster and she said she "trusts her staff to appropriately vet" fosters when no vetting was done at all. I am appalled at this organization and its lack of regard for animal safety and outcomes. read more

Any who, my family had lost their family member Maggie, who we adopted from here 4ish years ago. Unfortunately we recently lost her to cancer the beginning of this year. We loved her dearly & to this day we still mourn for her. As months went by, my father thought it would be a good idea to adopt a new member to the family now that we had a bigger yard & space to love another dog... but, I wish I was there this time he went to this Pets In Need location. The front desk guy gave us a dog with a "bad ear infection" & said it was just from "his siblings tugging on his ears" which was not the case AT ALL. My dad left with antibiotics & directions to apply it. To make it short.. In just 3 weeks this dog was practically decaying from the outside.. he was balding, oozing, ears were just clustered in scabs & he just smelled like death. We tried as best as we could to take care of him.. literally 3 weeks of just having him. But he just looked so uncomfortable & sad.. we couldn't bare to see him in this condition anymore. My family wanted to take him to a vet. But honestly I felt it was best to return him since Pets In Need have a vet & he shouldn't have been given to us in the state he was already in. But this guy.. omfg.. he was blaming, shaming & giving us the coldest shoulder. Making my family feel guilty for the puppies condition. To that guy.. How DARE you give a SICK dog to a family who is still MOURNING about their last dog. How unprofessional & inconsiderate. The two stars are just for the veterinarian who was able to empathize with us with this unfortunate situation. We really do hope the puppy fully recovered in whatever severe condition he was in. This is easily the best shelter/adoption group I be ever seen. We went in to introduce our somewhat finicky taco terrier to a potential second dog. Alas, he had been adopted shortly before we arrived. Omar took the time to get to know us and our dog and called a week or so later to tell us another dog who seemed like a good match in size and temperament had arrived. When we introduced them, it appeared he was correct. Unlike most other shelters, PIN allows a trial run, Foster to Adopt, which we did successfully. Most other places only do a short meet & sniff and then require the commitment (and cost) of adoption, so if the situation turns out to be difficult , you're tagged as a bad owner and are out the hundreds in fees. After Kona (puggle) passed away at 13 1/2 yo, we weren't sure if we would be ready for another one right away. We were going to wait until her 1 yr death anniversary. However, it didn't stop me from always checking the sites for pups. Well, sure enough Raya (aka Cashew) caught my eyes. Her eyes reminded me of my father who also passed away last year. Going in we knew we wanted to meet Raya. She was in the room w her brother Chestnut. We stayed for a while and took our time. We played with both of them but it was Raya who really caught our eyes and hearts. We opted to adopt and help those in need rather than go w a breeder. - The location is easy to find. There's street parking. If you plan on staying longer find parking without the green colored curbside. - The staff, we were greeted with smiles in their eyes so I knew they were slaps smiling behind the masks. Barbara introduced us to the pups and was very patient and informative. She gave us the time we needed to really observe and get a feel for the pups. Thank you for all your help! -The cost to adopt was $150. After searching and looking at different sites, I felt it was best to adopt. -The rooms were filled w toys and beds to keep the pups comfy. I cried this week because of my experience here. I hate to give anything under 4 stars for a pet adoption center, but 3 stars is fair and reflects my experience. I'm moving away soon and my dad needed a new companion with me gone and his dog passed away of old age a couple of years ago. We found Rocky at Pets in Need and went to see him immediately. We fell in love with him but before we adopted him, we asked all the necessary questions about his temperament, does he bark, etc. There were no flags raised and so we happily went home with him. The process was a breeze and we were thrilled. Rocky instantly warmed up to us and gave so much love and kisses; it was hard not to fall in love with him. We had to get my 67 year old dad used to taking care of him though since I'm moving and we started noticing things that were never brought up. Rocky is petrified of water and extremely strong. When my dad tried to clean his paws, he flailed about and ran out the house and ran away. It took 5 grown adults (neighbors helped us) to try to capture him; he's ridiculously fast. No way can a 67 year old man do this on his own. We were told Rocky was not a barker; that was completely untrue. Not only does he bark but it's a loud, crying type of bark you can hear half a block away that makes neighbors think we're abusing him. He did that anytime we went out the door; severe separation anxiety. For everyday we had him, he found a way to run out and we had to hunt him down everyday. He's also very aggressive and bites when he doesn't mean to; they told us he was not a biter. I shared my feedback with Pets in Need but told them we'll try to work it out. I got a nasty call from Andrew. He sounded very frustrated with me and I could literally hear him huffing on the phone while he cut me off and he yelled at me that it takes time and I need to be more patient. I don't appreciate that because they knew an elderly person was adopting Rocky and they should have disclosed the correct info when I asked and they should have better matched us. Rocky should never have been placed with an elderly person (he also should not be placed in a home with little kids because he does bite unintentionally). I was offended because I've adopted 3 dogs, including an epileptic dog who has seizures and I give him medication 7x/day for 9 years now to to yell at me and blame me for not being patient rather than taking ownership that you didn't properly disclose the right info or match with the right family is a slap in the face. People get attached to the dogs and the dogs get attached to us; you can't just haphazardly match. I only had Rocky a few days but I was crying my eyes out that we had to return him. In fact, I took him to the car and came back in the house 3 different times because I couldn't do it and my dad saw me crying and said he'll make it work but then Rocky kept escaping each day even with all the gates we put up and precautions we took. Eventually I had to have my husband take Rocky back because I just couldn't. I'm tearing up just writing this because it's just heartbreaking to me especially because I miss all his kisses and he always ran to me so happy to see me. I really hope he is placed with the right family who can care for him and who has the ability to chase him down anytime he get outs. If he goes to the wrong family, they might get sick of him escaping and leave him on the street, which makes me sad to think about. There are no refunds, but in this case, there should be if they did not tell me the truth about his barking/omitted information that would help us determine the fit for my elderly dad. I'd appreciate if they contact me back to provide a refund. read more

I cannot say enough about PIN! I'm a 63 yr old veteran and I needed to report to VA in Menlo Park for a PTSD treatment program. I was moving out of my apartment in Chico, and I had run out of time and options as to how I could keep my two cats, Tink & Belle. I've had them since their birth (6 yrs). It was heartbreaking that I had to consider surrendering them. It is not easy to find or trust someone with your cherished pets, especially during a tough time. The fact that PIN came through in my clutch moment and took on this responsibility with such dedication and care speaks volumes about their commitment to helping Pets In Need. Patty and her team at the rescue are true heroes for selflessly offering their time and resources to ensure that my girls were safe and well-cared for during my absence. My cats were lucky to be in such good hands, and I am so grateful for their generosity while I focused on my recovery. We've been reunited for about two weeks now and they have returned to their previous routines. I could not be better as a result of trauma therapy. Came here over the weekend with the gf to check out some dogs for a possible adoption. While there are certainly multiple adoption agencies out there, we wanted to adopt from one that was no-kill, and took care of the pets in their care. Thankfully Yelp came to the rescue by suggesting Pets In Need. When we arrived, we found out that this shelter only handles dogs and cats. Dogs are on the left side, while cats are segregated on the right side. Most of the dogs have their own rooms, unless they come as a pair, and take up 4 hallways. Simple go through one hallway at a time until you've visited all the cute pooches available for adoption that day. We saw a lot of really cute fur babies, who for the most part were all very friendly and sociable. While we certainly wanted to play with all of them, we wound up asking to spend some time with a cutie named Roscoe, a 1yr old chihuahua and terrier mix. He not only was very friendly, but also knew how to play fetch when he tried to bring his ball to us through the glass so we could play with him. During our interaction with Roscoe, we got to learn a lot about the agency, their purpose, and the adoption process from the volunteer there. It was clear that they shared a deep affection for all the pets there and the pets for them, because Roscoe showed a ton of love for the volunteer whenever he was in the room. From our visit, we learned that the very reasonable adoption fee, which is used to keep them in operation, also includes microchipping. And all pets are spayed/neutered as needed, and given a thorough medical check-up by an in-house vet prior to being brought downstairs when they are ready to be adopted. All the rooms that the dogs were in were fairly spacious, and stocked with pet beds and toys for them to play with. Although we sadly did not wind up adopting that day due to additional considerations with family members, we do plan to come back to Pets In Need in the near future when logistical issues have been resolved! read more

A while ago a stay kitten followed me home but soon we found out that she had seizures and needing testing to figure out if she has any disease that needs to be treated. Just getting all of the testing done is very costly and I was searching for help. Many shelters and even rescues said that if I took the kitten to them, they would euthanize her because having seizures is a serious condition, therefore she is not an adoptable kitten. I was really sad that this little baby cat wouldn't even get a chance at life, but I couldn't bear the thought of letting her automatically be euthanized. At this point I was in tears hearing over and over again that she would be euthanized. But, Pets In Need was able to help me with a portion of her vet bills for the testing. Life is PAAWWWWW-FECT after we adopted Hilda, she's the sweetest dog! I'm so happy we made the trek down to Redwood City after seeing their segment air on the weekend news. My husband actually got my attention on this cute little puppy, which unfortunately was already adopted by the time we got there. As we walked in. we saw cute adorable kittens on the right with huge googly eyes like "Puss in Boots" from Shrek. How can one ignore those faces? I wanted to take them home immediately, but mom wanted a doggie. On the left, there were so many dogs to choose from. They started barking almost to say "pick me, pick me". There were three ladies at the counter advising the kids not to roam around and follow the leader, so we did just that. It was almost closing time, and Helen Greve agreed to stay, as the others left and Helen took us on a tour. This place is literally a maze, and they keep it spotless. One door led to some hyper chihuahuas, the next door opened up to puppies, and the next room had yorkies. Helen matched up my mom with Hilda (chihuahua mix) and explained how mellow she is, and the both of them would be happy together. I realized the kids seem to be more excited than my mom, and Helen reiterated if the kids took Hilda home, they'd never give her back. Helen was right, Hilda has been in our home ever since and only visits my mom periodically like the kids. Guess who's bathing, feeding, and taking the dog out? ME, the sucker! Hilda has won everyone over, and we love having her as a new addition to our family. She goes everywhere with us; she loves to joy ride in the van. I highly recommend getting a pet here to add to your family. Helen was thorough with all the paperwork and ensured we received all shot records. The adoption fee was waived and a donation was requested. My mother donated to this wonderful place and the rest is history. read more

My family adopted a puppy from Pets in Need in Palo Alto about two years ago and were looking to adopt another puppy. We checked PIN and the PIN in Redwood City happened to have a puppy. We applied to adopt her and were hoping for an appointment, but unfortunately she was adopted before we even got a call (this was very understandable, given that she's a puppy and their current policies because of COVID). However, Omar gave me a call the next day to let us know that a male puppy had been returned and asked us if we were interested. We said yes and he set up an appointment for a meet-and-greet with our dog and family. The day came and we drove about an hour and a half out to meet the puppy. The ladies that helped us out were very nice and accommodating (we didn't get their names, but one had short brown hair and the other had blonde hair in a bun). They were very knowledgable and we really appreciated how they handled the meet-and-greet with our dog and the puppy. Unfortunately, we didn't end up adopting the puppy because it wasn't a good fit, but staff was very understandable and didn't make us feel bad for it. So, although we didn't adopt, we had an overall fantastic experience and will be returning. We're very appreciative that the staff in PIN in Redwood City never made us feel guilty for not adopting and were very understandable, as we've had some pretty bad experience at other shelters. About 6 months ago we went to the shelter to see their dogs but we didn't find our perfect dog there. Before we left, we decided to have a quick look at a cat whose online profile we saw the day before. We told them in advance that we were not going to adopt a cat since we already had one in our house but they still agreed to escort us to Marshall's room. It took us 10 seconds to fall in love with that sweet boy! We decided to adopt him spontaneously but there are no words to describe how much we love Marshall and how much joy he brings us every single day! The whole adoption process took about 20 minutes, I liked that they asked us multiple questions about our experience with pets, about our house and the neighborhood - it made me think that they really care about their pets. This review has been long overdue. To start, I want to say that I got my lovely companions Noodle and Tater here, and they have been wonderful. We are very happy to provide both of them with a warm and loving home and their affection is priceless. 5 stars for what they've given us as a family. The facility has been upgraded so much (music for the animals, beautiful cat section) and the people at this organization hold fun events all the time (adoption events, bbqs, anniversary events) that we still go back for. Overall, PIN is a great place to adopt from. In terms of the adoption experience, the first adoption was a little stressful, mostly due to confusion surrounding their hold policy and the availability of the dog we wanted to adopt. The people who ultimately ran the adoption for me (and helped me adopt my second dog, Tater -- the second adoption went very smoothly) were very helpful and patient with my questions. Pros: -- a constant supply of dogs updated on a website every day -- easy to see what the inventory is -- more affordable than some other shelters / rescues on the peninsula (DPS in Palo Alto charges $400 if you want a comparison -- PIN charges $150 with $75 obedience course deposit) -- chill about going though their corridors to visit the dogs, unlike some shelters that make you wait and wait and wait (ahem Mission SPCA) -- clean, happy place with volunteers who are really caring -- the dogs seem to get a lot of interaction, there's a huge lot in the back that dogs do playtime at, and dogs are constantly getting walked by the loving volunteers -- no parking, but 5th ave or Bay Rd typically suffices and Arteaga's now allows you to use their lot. Cons: -- the shelter has an interesting policy to put an animal on hold by paying a deposit on them that goes towards the final balance, should the adoption follow through. if a dog is on hold, keep calling and showing up in person. With our first dog's adoption, someone had her on hold for days while coming to pick her up and leaving without her. I kept calling and finally came in person to accost them about the dog -- they finally agreed to let me take her, but it was sort of an ordeal and fortunately I have a flexible work schedule. If it's a hypo-allergenic breed, puppy, or a less common breed, I hope you have their number on speed dial -- people were calling for Tater (maltese / yorkie) when we came to visit 48 hours after he was posted, and 3 groups were coming in asking about him when we were signing his papers. -- some stuff was not up to date with our first adopted dog. The health records said she was flea treated when she came into the shelter. I was almost turned away from a grooming center a few days after adoption b/c she was overdue for treatment again, several days before her adoption date. This concerns me because these dogs are taken out for playtime outside, but don't seem to be re-treated after the initial clean - a problem with the rampant flea situation in light of the drought. Wasn't a problem with the second dog but he wasn't at PIN for as long before adoption. Overall, thank you PIN for giving us our family members on 4 legs -- their companionship has been invaluable!! read more
