Came here in April over my Spring Break looking around for a bike. I was not ready to buy or expecting to find a bike I liked, but mostly wanted to get some more information about biking. Tristan and Carolyn were beyond helpful with loads of information. They recommended a couple of bikes to me but didn't put any pressure on to buy anything at all. Tristan and Carolyn were both very knowledgeable, patient and attentive. I came back a second time and found a bike (Civia Lowery) on clearance that I absolutely love! I purchased some accessories for my bike that were also on clearance/sale. I came back to pick up the bike a few days later so that they would have time to put all my accessories on and do a final checkup. The store was pretty organized (especially the clearance section) and there were lots of bikes that were in stock for purchase. You can also have them order you a bike and when it arrives in store, they will assemble it for you for free. This is the best deal for bicycle repair and maintenance on the South Side. Tune-ups with cleaning start at only $50, the repair work is competent and very fairly priced. It's a two person operation, the pair are friendly, interesting, and bicycle enthusiasts who seem to be expanding their location into some sort of bicyclists hostel. The shop has a limited but interesting array of lights, helmets, bicycles, and wheels. The artistic door makes your first visit worth it. You can rent bicycles here, including cargo bikes. read more

There comes a time in every urban commuter's life when they look at their second hand pink, camouflage (insert other crazy pattern here) Jansport backpack and decide it makes them look absolutely ridiculous. This happened to me last year, and on a friend's recommendation (Thanks, Beth P. :)) I hustled over to Coast In to look at some pannier bag options. They all kinds to choose from (it was a bit daunting) but I went with a black rack on the back, and a black pannier for the bag with a removable plastic liner. The rack has one of those tension, snap tops, and I've never had any clothes, bags groceries, etc I've put under it fall out. The pannier also converts to a backpack so its quite practical. (Side note: I read a magazine article a few months back about what your choice of purse at a bar says about you. The girl with the backpack: "its just to strange - I mean, what's that about?" Ha, I take the backpack everywhere so that cracked me up.) But both the pannier and rack, although not inexpensive have proved invaluable. I have less of that Hunchback of Notre Dame chic going on now that I'm not using a backpack on the bike all the time, and the rack is helpful for trips to the store. The backpack came with a life time warranty too which is great. I also spied some AWESOME commuter bikes at coast in -- all pastel colors (blue, green with built in racks and I think lights). For about $600 or so, if I didn't already have a bike I'd seriously consider one of these. This is a little off (my) the beaten path for me, but otherwise the location is great - right on second in Walker's point, between the East Side and Bayview, (right around the time & place the Pedal Tavern people are in the bike lane in full "Wooooo!" mode.). read more

I love all thing local! Super friendly owner. Super friendly service. I bike past here everyday on my way to work and thought I would stop in to buy a new bike light after an awesome Monday brunch at The Noble. They have a really nice selection of bike bags, bikes--including Linus Bikes-how cool! The space is clean, cozy, well done. Odd complaint. No bike parking. I tied my Dutchie to a stop sign. The tool selection could be bigger but this is a new store and I'm guessing they need to find out the needs of the area first before overstocking. Verdict: Stop in, look around, even better buy a bike and join me on the road! It is a great way to experience MKE! :) Review upgraded to five stars. My wife and I were visiting MKE this weekend for a wedding...got a last minute idea to rent bikes. The folks at Coast In were super accomodating, and had us on our way in no time. A very cool feature is that you can rent any of the bikes they have in stock; cruisers, mountain bikes, tandems, cargo. Unusual and killer. Also, though we didn't have need to use it, they have a saddle library, where you can try out something like 20 differnt saddles (Brooks, Selle, etc). If I was in the market I would for sure use this feature. Finally, they were very flexible on our return time, and answered the phone after hours, allowing us a last minute drop off. Coast In was a lifesaver! I need a bike to commute to work and stopped in last minute when an Axel broke- I had my bike for years and they were very honest with me about the shape it was in (pretty terrible). Carolyn was knowledgeable and supportive as I made the decision with them to buy a different bike which she suggested to me! The staff was insanely busy with repairs but still made time to recognize my needs and get me on my way with a great new bike! I found I had a flat tire on my first morning in Milwaukee. I arrived at Coast In Bikes early hoping to get tire fixed as soon as they opened. Luckily bike mechanic Al also arrived early and had me back on the road quickly. A few hours later while biking around the lake I got another flat. Back to Coast In Bikes and the fixed me up again. They were terrific! I decided to ride in a community bike race this summer (the Riverwest 24) and realized it was time to start preparing. Since I ride my bike once a year for a bike pub crawl, it was in really rough shape. I took it in and they were fabulous. I know nothing more about bikes than they have two wheels and you pedal, and they made me feel good about my choice to get out on the road, not stupid that I brought in a mountain bike with a rusty chain! I cannot say too many great things about their customer service, friendly demeanors and upbeat attitudes. I went in to look for a new pannier for my bike rack and I was surprised by the selection and assistance I got. Carolyn gave me a full rundown of all the options and helped me pick out one that was perfect for me, a pannier that on one side clips to the bike rack, and on the other side has straps to convert it to a backpack. She also helped me install a new bell on my bike that screws in to the stem in between helping out some folks test out a rental bike. It seems like they have lots of alternative options available for bike equipment, and a good variety of different types of bicycles on sale that I haven't seen at other shops. The fact they have the space and equipment available to fix your own bike for free is pretty amazing. Also the cafe in the back is about as comfortable and welcoming as it gets. It's a great place to relax with an iced coffee while your bike gets fixed or even to get some work done since they now have WiFi. No other bike shop I've been to has such relaxing atmosphere. read more

I didn't know to call ahead of time and the owner multi tasked and dealt with customer inquiries as she installed a baby seat I needed for my daughter to be able to go. A few winter's ago, I had a fatbike race coming up, and couldn't find barmits anywhere, and even online was out of the question. One of the owner's sold me a pretty much brand new pair off her bike, so I had the equipment I was looking for to race with. This shop will do whatever it takes to keep people riding. I've supported this shop for the last few years, after using a few other locals shops. Always enjoy the service they provide. communication is unparalleled. Like many cyclists, I do some shopping online, and I've never had an issue getting bikes serviced here. Timelines for service work are kept, or communicated if there is an adjustment. Tristan and Carolyn have special ordered a few items for me, and the price and leadtime is always better than anything else I can find. They honor their rates and are upfront on estimates, that is what I like best. I've stopped in for DIY as well, to learn how to adjust disc brakes and the like. I brought my daily commuting bike in for a tune-up with a Living Social voucher. Unlike some businesses, nobody at the shop caused me to feel like I was a less-valuable customer because I had a voucher. I've had a handful of bike shop tune-ups over the years, and find myself most satisfied with the service I received from Coast In Bikes - they looked over my bike while I was there, gave a preliminary report on any repairs/replacements that they would recommend and when I opted to have my chain replaced, they gave me the choice of 2 types of chains they were using - something I have never heard done at a bike shop. Similarly, they let me know about my brake pads that could use replacing. This is a big deal to me since I am particular about my brake pads. Previous tune ups I've been disappointed to find my pads replaced with pads that I would not have opted for, but I still have to pay parts and labor. The staff at Coast In Bikes gave me the option of either bringing in my own pads that they would only charge labor for, or to do it myself. I had asked for a drive train cleaning on top of the simple tune-up, which was fantastic - except for wear, the drive train looks as clean as when I bought the bike. The frame cleaning provided was adequate, as good as you can get without actually WASHING the bike (which I hope to have done once the shop's bike shower is complete!). There were a few small missed spots (a tough-to-reach spot in the front fork and some bits of the downtube between some exposed cables), but that is very cosmetic. I'm so glad a shop has moved so close to my workplace, I look forward to utilizing Coast In Bike's services more in the future. read more

Carolyn and Tristan have been a wonderful cornerstone of the cycling community of Milwaukee, building friendships and encouraging cyclists, one bike at a time. Their shop is fantastic-- they are excellent listeners and always have what you need, from good advice about bike parts to some of the best, tried and true cycling gadgets and gear (and some really cool bikes too!). They helped me build an excellent set of wheels that I just love for my commuter bike with a dynamo hub that powers my lights and phone. In town for a few days from Minneapolis and wanted to rent a bike. So glad my boyfriend and I picked Coast In. We were able to choose any bike in the whole store. How fun! My boyfriend rented a fat bike and I a cute Linus. We had a great day exploring the city. The store was super helpful and knowledgable and gave us a lot of good tips for seeing the city. My gears were a little slippery. Brought my bike in on a Friday morning; I had not made an appointment. They did a very thorough drivetrain cleaning for me. The work cost about $40 and the bike was done by Friday evening. Now I've got about 50 miles on the bike since taking it to Cost In and the gears are solid, no slipping. Super-friendly, honest people who know their way around a bicycle. Great location, too. Can't beat same-day service with a smile! read more

I stopped in with my nephew to get a leaky inner tube replaced and ended up getting my whole wheel straightened out. I'm so happy I chose this to have it done. My bike rides like its brand new! I love this shop. Tristan and the staff are always friendly and helpful. I've had service work done there a few times and the work has been exceptional. They replaced shifter cables that route through the frame a couple of times and troubleshot and fixed a shifting problem which turned out to be a bent derailleur hanger. The original part they received was faulty. They worked with the manufacturer to fix the problem and had a new one out to me in no time. read more

Paid in advance for overhaul on a monday. Tried to schedule a set time, they told me to come in any time that day. So I went to work and my phone blew up the whole shift. They left a couple aggressive Voice mails, "where are you? When are you coming in?" Got off work, went in with bike got a lot of attitude like I was inconveniencing them, though there were no other customers. Every staff member was incredibly rude, any other time I was in there they were very condescending. Also! None were capable of making eye contact while being a jerk! They couldn't even tell what kind of bike I rode even though it said the brand Marin on the frame. And they fucked up my breaks after changing a tire for me and refused to admit that they had. I got a refund and checked out a book at the library on how to fix my own bike. Why am i tipping beer money to a bunch of entitled snots with no social skills? DIY read more

Best bike shop I've visited in Milwaukee! I stopped in to Coast In Bikes with my husband and daughter after looking at Xtracycles online and wanted to see and hear about the bike in person. The woman who helped us was so knowledgeable and patient with my probably "dumb" questions as I don't know the proper terms or mechanical elements, etc. She showed us several cargo bikes in various price ranges, all perfect for what I was a looking for - just a family bike for groceries and errands and trips to he park etc. She hooked us up with helmets and let my daughter and I bike around the neighborhood to see how it felt. At no point were they pushy or acting like they were trying to get a sale. It was the best experience I have ever had at a bike shop. I didn't make my decision that day but will be coming back soon to purchase from them no matter what. Bonus: while we were there, one of the guys who worked there on a repair stopped what he was doing to hang out with my 2 year old and show her how to work a balance bike. Now because of that - I will ALSO be purchasing a balance bike for my daughter as well as bringing our bikes we already own in for service. Great people, great shop, HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more
