My Specialized hybrid bike had seen a lot of daily commutes and Chicago potholes, and needed a right tune-up! It was early April, and SSC was so booked, they were only taking appointments two weeks later; so I made my Wednesday drop off appointment and service was finished a few days later. South Shore Cyclery has a fair amount of new bikes, and they definitely should be in your new bike rotation, as they are very knowledgeable, and carry a nice amount of Mountain and Road bikes, hybrids, and new kind of Road/City hybrids. My bike needed a new chain and derailleur, as well as the tune-up, and I approved the work. When I picked it up I got a nice explanation of the work done, by the tech who had done the work. The tuned up bike rides like a DREAM! I rode it for an hour the day I picked it up, even though I wasn't planning on it- highly recommend SSC! read more

Really excellent customer service here! The past two years I've flown into Chicago and drove up to MKE to pick up a bike for the Door County Century. Each time I've rented a bike at South Shore Cyclery. They have a solid selection but it's the mechanics who stand out. I bring in my pedals, seat and seatbag and they put them on for me, answer any questions I might have and work with me if I'm early or late. Coming from out of town this was my first visit. I bought a vintage bike from Scott through a response of his from the CABE. Well, I could not be happier with my purchase. The price was reasonable and exactly what I was expecting. This candy apple metallic red 1965 Murray Meteor Flite 26" bike will be come back to life next year when it is restored to its former glory. Steve and Jake were incredibly helpful, the bike that I was looking for was out of stock but I signed up to get a message when it came back in stock. when it came back in stock i got a text that said they would hold it till the weekend, so i came in a few days later and test drove the bike. they even stayed a bit late to help me figure out how to change gears. within 30 minutes I had walked in test drove the bike and was checked out and on my way. friendly! fast! helpful! read more

Aside from a very nice staff who were working with a constant stream of loyal patrons the 2 hours I was on site shooing bike.... they invested 2 hours in me shopping for an entry level bike! Steve was super knowledgeable and devoted a ton of time to me setting up a number of bike for me to demo- and all with a smile on his face. The shop is a bit smaller in terms of live inventory, but they have a nice selection of entry level and mid range causal bikes, Mainly Giant and affiliate bikes, and some nice trail bikes, with a small selection of pre-owned too. read more

I rented a large road bike from here and was very impressed with the shop's handling of my request, installation of pedals, adjusting seat and overall condition of the bike. Been a few years since I had my classic Raleigh super course gone over. The bike has regular ball bearings instead of the ones on a ring. I have in the past tried to take it to a person that knows how older bikes go together Saw the high ratings for south shore cycles Never had taken a bike there before Bike rolls like new. The mechanic at south shore did find where the last mechanic didn't get things quite right. That was at rainbow Jersey where the owner Jerry was an expert on ole bikes but staff were lackin Been on 5 rides so far this year 20 plus miles ones The bike really rolls. Extremely happy that I went to south shore. I think a winner Had the bike totally checked over. Wheels and sprocket bearings repacked. Just wanted to give a shout out to the team at South Shore. My wife and I drove up from Chicago after having no luck at 5 stores closer to us. Prior to going, we called and asked them to build the bikes we were looking for. We got there about 30 minutes prior to close, and decided that we actually liked different bike models better. So their team stayed past close to build the bikes we liked better and let us take them for a quick ride to make sure we liked them. They couldn't have been nicer or more helpful in educating us. Stopped in on the recommendation of a friend. Haven't been on a bike in many years, wasn't familiar at all with current bicycles. Staff there were patent, listened to what I wanted, made several recommendations and sent me out on test rides until I was completely happy. I made a purchase that day, along with the bike I picked up a helmet (again with patient and thorough recommendation and explanation) and some other accessories. The staff were friendly, very knowledgeable and couldn't have been better. Doing a little research afterwards, their prices were very competitive, I couldn't have done better elsewhere. I was first introduced to this shop during the 2011 Bay View bash where they had a display and a raffle (I didn't win, boohoo). I was interested in one of the bikes they had but wasn't going to purchase it right then and there. I did show enough interest, however, for the person working there to be really nice and give me a $10 gift certificate. Fast forward to December 30, the day before said gift certificate expired. Oh my bank account hurts but I'm still happy. New bike and accessories, I decided I needed a decent bike because I pretty much use it as a car and the ones you can buy at the major retailers don't cut it for the work I put it through (city roads, heavy groceries, the occasional bulky load, etc.). I also didn't want to buy a super expensive bike, but I went in knowing this was not going to be a cheap trip either. I was greeted by Steve who asked what I was looking for. He showed me a few bikes which were within my price range and could handle the work load I required of it. I picked out one of them and spent at least an hour looking at and picking out toys to tack on (rear view mirrors, rack, giant front basket, lights, clown horn, etc.). He helped me out with the toys too, showing me the advantages/ disadvantages of some items (such as the different mirrors and a neat bungee mesh thing). If I wanted to see an item in action he opened it and let me play with it (putting together a mirror so I could see it, putting batteries into lights, etc.). I left with my credit card on life support and my bike in the shop to have the new toys attached free of charge since I just paid for a new bike. Fast forward again to today: I picked up my bike and put my credit card into a slight relapse of the trauma I put it through on Friday. My bike was ready (he forgot the mirrors, which he very quickly remedied by putting them on) and I needed a few more things: a new helmet (mine is pretty old and needed replacing, he even helped me adjust it to my head so it was ready to go), more reflectors for the wheels, and some reflective leg straps. He didn't have enough of the reflectors I wanted to buy (I bought two packs instead of three) but he had a few miscellaneous ones on hand he just gave me for free (score!). The whole time Steve was helpful and polite. Very patient because I was looking at and playing with and asking questions about everything. Quiet, customer oriented guy. He even opened the door for me when I left so it was easy to get the bike through the door. He told me after a month of actually riding the bike to take it in to make sure it was holding up alright, how many other bike stores have this?! I don't know when I'll really be able to ride (at the moment it feels like 5 degrees out there and I would end up with flat tires) but when that month is over I'm sure they'll do just as well as I have experienced these last few days at their store. The funny thing is that I've been talking about getting all this with my hubby for over a year. If it weren't for seeing them at the Bash and getting the certificate I probably wouldn't have known about this shop or had the incentive to visit here at all and would have gone to the place closer to home. Please give this place a visit if you are a bicycle rider, it is a great place with great customer service and lots of neat old bikes and gear to gawk at. These guys are great! Alway friendly, helpful, willing to spend time and shoot straight with you on needed repairs. My wife and I own 3 Trek bikes and I recommend them over local dealer trek dealer. Two years ago they rebuilt my road bike with new rims, cables and full tune up after 15k miles. Rode like new and l like the rims more than original. Brought another 20 yr old Trek hybrid that I picked up used for gravel trails in and they brought it back to life. I would much prefer to bring my business to South Shore with guys like these who remember you and your bike and perform quality work. I'm still on a quest, and also, I'm full of questions. This quest (for a new bike) took me to South Shore Cyclery earlier this week, and just as in my experience at Truly Spoken, I learned a lot and left feeling like the folks there -- Steve, namely -- genuinely cared and wanted to help me find something that was right for me. South Shore's a Giant dealer, so I test rode a Fuji and Giant. Both were nice, though the Fuji was actually a bit too small, and helped me to better gauge what it is I'm looking for, exactly. Seems to be a very community-oriented place, which I dig. It was also super busy for a Tuesday afternoon! There's a bike museum at SSC, too, which is super cool. Four big stars, and I plan on going back to talk to Steve more so and to figure out if buying new or building a bike would be my best option. :) read more

I was looking for my first road bike about 4 years ago and since I knew one of the guys in the shop, Roy, I thought I would check them out. Spent some time talking to Steve and found a great used Fuji Newest at a very reasonable price. Since then I have taken my bike there for service, joined on a few group rides and even took the Park Tool School one day maintenance class. Went out of their way and found a used one downstairs they hadn't gone through yet, checked it out to make sure it was ready for a test ride. I could take my time and ride around the neighborhood instead of just in the parking lot. helped me pick out a seat. No pressure but stayed with me the whole time I needed them to find exacty what I needed. took time to answer questions. They were willing to make sure everything was perfect have been ready for me to take it home but I decided to come back 3 days later when I could bring the bigger car. we found this bike shop on the city website and looked them up on our first day of a 9 day stay. we had planned on renting bikes so they showed us the choices. we picked two bikes, a Giant OCR2 road bike and a beautiful Fuji road bike. We made pending reservations for midweek and started our stay. When we went to get the bikes not only did they put SPD pedals on them for us, they took the time to fit us to the bikes and made sure they were in good working order. Using the bike map provided, we found our way around and enjoyed three fun filled days riding bikes and enjoying the city of Milwaukee. I go here for bike repairs. Today I got a flat fixed. They replaced the tube, it cost 13.00 total. To me that was worth it. I was in and out in 10 minutes. In the past they replaced one of my shifters and also fixed my bike seat that would not stay up in position. Prices are very reasonable. You can see a list of service charges on their website. Like someone else said, they never try and talk you into buying other stuff or making other repairs. They just fix what is wrong and out you go. I am so glad to have a place like this around since we lost our Wheel and Sprocket in South Milwaukee years ago. I would recommend them for any bike repairs you may need! read more
