I haven't written a review for Hometown Donuts because I wanted y'all to keep thinking it's a sleepy spot. Honestly though, it's consistently great every time I go and I can't hold back my praise anymore. This is an old school mom and pop donut shop and they're better than those big box donut places any day. The lady behind the counter is quiet but super kind. They stay open until they basically sell out so like 2-4pm (depends on the day) and unfortunately they're not open on Sundays. My favorite is their chocolate twist. Obviously best and most fresh in the mornings. I've brought these to work in SF a couple times and people ask where it's from every time. I recommend it and will keep coming back! read more

Traditional mom and pop donut shop. Good quality good prices. There are so many uber expensive donut shops popping up that its becoming difficult to find a decent traditional donut shop these days. This is a small family run business - unlike Duncans or Krispy Kreme - huge corporations. There is nothing wrong with the big guys - it is predictable and familiar - but if a smaller run business does just as good or better - its great to patronize. I tend to dislike Krispy Kreme - too gooey. Soggy - greasy somehow. These donuts sold here are big and fluffy and very fresh. Tons of variety as you could imagine and a personal touch too. The area is safe and there is a lot of new construction - hopefully that means more turnover and freshness. Interior is clean and some windows to look out and enjoy. read more

I've been craving donuts so I decided to stop by this local shop before dropping off my boyfriend to the ferry. It looked like a normal older donut shop layout format. They sell lotto! I wanted something big and to test out there dough fluff but also a simpler option. They will charge you $0.50 cents if you want to use card under $5 purchase. I found this out cause the counter guy automatically charged me and I questioned it. The dough or chocolate glaze was nothing special. In fact, the dough tasted almost not fresh as in donuts they made this morning but not as bad as grocery store bought donuts. I just don't think I'll be back to give it another shot. read more

I've lived in Alameda nearly two years and only just tried Hometown Donuts, mostly because they are both out of the way and only open til 3pm. :( But oh- look at these! They're so fresh! I purchased 8 donuts. The nice lady behind the counter threw in two more and went, "sssh!". They were perfect. I love that they don't try to do a weird, undersized, undercooked, overpriced version of an apple fritter like a lot of these new places try to do. My husband and I have lived on the west end of Alameda for almost 32 years. We are still in the neighborhood. Finally, yesterday was my first check-in at Hometown Donuts. Beats me why I have never stopped in at this donut shop all these years. The only slight disappointment I have is they don't sell French cruller, which is my favorite donut. I bought my husband an apple fritter. It was loaded with apples and he said it was cinnamonly good. Their ham 'n cheese croissant was filling and I almost could not finish it. I ordered these items yesterday. This morning I returned for another apple fritter, two blueberry cake donuts and a dozen donut holes. I usually don't eat cake donuts, but my glucose level has been under 110 for about a week. The blueberry donut was a treat. I only ate half of it. Besides it has been over 10 years since I had one of these blueberry donuts. It was yummy and fresh. Return visits? Yes, but not everyday. I like their variety of donuts in the display cases and the assortment of beverages they have in the refrigerator. I still have yet to see if they have hazelnut coffee. Open daily 6 am to 2 pm during COVID-19, but closed on Sunday! Ever have a donut craving? Love soft donut holes and slightly crunchy apple fritters where you can see the apple pieces? Well due to the shelter in place, I've limited my walks to places where not many will walk. My route brings me by Hometown Donuts and can I just say, I may have a new favorite donut shop! I'm trying to do my part in supporting local businesses so I decided to stop in this morning to give them my business. I walked in and Henry greeted me by asking how I was doing and we chatted a little while I tried to make the difficult decision of if I wanted the apple fritter or a maple bar. I ended up buying the large apple fritter ($2.50 but it's the size of my hand) and a dozen donut holes ($2.75/doz). I definitely didn't need all this sugar but it's for a good cause. I chatted with Henry about how business was going and they're staying open just to break even. They aren't serving lunch in case they don't get enough customers to purchase things before they go bad. He says he gets about 10 calls a day asking if they're open so I felt the need to report back to Yelpers that they are indeed open! Please go and support them! On to the donuts. Oh my goodness. I started off with a couple donut holes before and at the start of my first Zoom meeting and they were so light and airy and perfectly glazed without being too sweet! At $2.75 a dozen, it's an extremely good deal since these donut holes are pretty big...and you're getting a dozen of them. Before I could write this review, I said I'd try a small piece of the huge apple fritter. Well, one piece has turned into a fourth and I'm still eyeing it. The outside is crunchy with the right amount of glaze. You can see the apple pieces. The inside isn't too dense like other places or too sweet like apple pie filling. I can see why this is a fan favorite. I'll definitely be back, though I'd better watch how often given my limited exercise. They have a small lot in the front that they share with two other businesses that are closed during the day. I think you can also park in the back lot as well. read more

We had no choice. Made to order, and very different from assembly line style burgers. Delicious old fashioned homemade Cheeseburgers! This is a nice little local donut shop that is run by a kind and friendly family. This spot is a little out-of-the-way and doesn't get much foot traffic. So its always quiet inside, and the parking out front is as easy as could be. They make all the donuts fresh VERY early every morning. And the coffee is strong. I usually get one of the breakfast sandwiches. My favorite is the croissant with egg and bacon. They are happy to heat it up for you if you ask, and I definitely recommend you do. They have some things on the menu I've never tried. For example, the cheeseburger. Other's say its decent for the price, so I'll need to find a special occasion to stop by at lunch time. PRO-TIP: If you have a large order (say, larger than 3 dozen donuts), I strongly recommend you phone ahead. They can have your order waiting for you when you arrive. read more

Donut place is located in an older strip mall off Ralph Apezzato way near College of Alameda...place is popular for the donuts, with burger options, lottery tickets, candy and chips. I'd definitely come back just for the apple fritter...stopped by after lunch 2 doors down (yummy thai place) since wanted something sweet for later. Donut options (around 1pm) were slim pickings. I usually gauge a donut place off the most basic, yet yummy glazed donut but they were completely out...even the donut holes so I had to 'settle' for 1 of 3 fritters left in the display case. Darn! I bought 4 donuts today and it was only 5.85 and the owners even threw in 6 free donut holes (which makes everything taste that much better)! The donuts are always fresh and can run out pretty quick. I walked in to purchase a $3 Tetris Scratcher this morning and when I asked the elderly man for a $3 Tetris Scratcher, he gave me a $3 Ancient Riches Scratcher. I politely let him know I asked for a $3 Tetris Scratcher and double-checked with him to make sure they have it. He raised his voice at me and in an annoyed and rude tone, told that the $3 Ancient Riches Scratcher is what I was looking for. So I corrected him and told him no, I asked for a $3 Tetris Scratcher and once again double- checked to make sure they had it. He rudely said yes, they do have it (when I say rudely, he sounded irritated and he raised his voice) and I told him that's the one I have been asking for. He grabbed the $3 Ancient Riches scratcher from me along with the three $1 bills and tossed the $3 Tetris Scratcher towards me on the counter. I even heard a thud on the counter when he tossed the $3 Tetris Scratcher towards me. Being frank, the only reason why I gave three stars instead of the one star that I really wanted to give is because of the lady behind the counter working with him. I could be wrong, but I believe they are husband and wife. She was helping another customer and told me I am sorry, I do not know what is going on, I will take care of it. Unfortunately, it was too late because right after she told me she would take care of it, that was the time that the elderly man tossed the $3 Tetris Scratcher towards me. I'm currently expanding my photography hobby to stretch into HDR images so what better place than this cozy large spread of military waste? Tsk tsk tsk. So sad to see a place fall apart. I could only imagine how busy it was back in the heyday. Since I had been out in the sun and sitting on my arse just to get the perfect shot, a slight appetite and dehydration had finally caught up with me. Never mind that I had forgotten my beloved bag of buttermilk loaves at the fellow's place, but the minute I walked in, the donut holes behind the display clamored for my strict attention. Most of the stock was gone, but I did peek at the glazed old fashioned and further substantiated my sweet mental state with visions of large glazed twists and an assortment of colorful sprinkled old fashioned. In addition to fresh donuts, they also grill up simple burgers (combo with a drink) and sandwiches. Behind the counter (no doubt to deter sticky fingers belonging to many a possibility in this shop) are shelves of chips, snacks, candies and drinks. I ordered a medium diet coke (no slurpees here :o( and a bag of ranch flavored corn nuts (what can I say, I settled for twice) The lady behind the counter was quite smiley and nice. Hometown Donuts is a neighborhood secret. If you go too late, you won't have much to pick from. The neighborhood peeps know to go early. The outside is unassuming and you may pass it if you tend to judge a book by its cover, but then it will be your loss. Doughnuts are so soft and fluffy with just the perfect amount of sweet. They microwave good the next day too so don't be fru-fru and throw them donuts away because they are a day old. The family that owns the place, however, is why I love this place. **SCAMMERS" I came here at least once a week after my workout at Bladium to get a drink. Today, I didn't have cash and so decided to use my card. I asked the person at the counter if they accepted Debit card. He pointed me to the the ATM machine which charged me $2.50 to withdraw money. That was okay, except for the fact that after I pulled out cash, I see a sign at the counter that says debit card transactions must me a minimum of $5 or there will be a $.50 charge. When I asked the person at the counter why didn't he tell me this, he shrugged and said it is $5.00 minimum purchase. I pointed at the sign which said $.50 fee if under (which I was willing to pay). He just ignored me with no apologies or explanation. It's not the actual fee that pisses me off. It is the feeling that they are willing to cheat a customer just to gain an extra couple of bucks. Makes me wonder what other corners they cut to try and make a buck. Never coming back! read more
