We started going to this vet a few years ago when it was Lakeside Vet because the vets closer to where we live either weren't taking new patients or were scheduling months ahead. It was during COVID, and we liked that they had a protocol to provide safety. Later they merged with Hometown Vet and are just a few minutes closer to us in Fairfield, but we have stayed with them rather than checking around again with local vets because we like them. They are friendly and know what they are doing. We worked with them to get our oldest cat, who was diagnosed with diabetes, set with a regime of insulin and proper eating, and he has is still doing well at 15 years old. Of course the victors can be expensive, especially with multiple cats, but I have never felt they have either overcharged or recommended work to pad the bill. They do seem to have problems filling prescriptions when you pick them up at an outside pharmacy, ; not sure why. read more

I have used this vet practice for over 10 years. I love Peter Walsh, he is the most compassionate vet I have ever had! The problem I am having is they have gotten too big to be a "Hometown" practice. You have all you can do to get a real person. I tried to fill my dogs prescription because I dropped it in my dish water and needed it asap. When I call the office and talk to the automated machine and they tell me 24 to 48 hours for it to get called in means it is time to find a "hometown" practice that you can actually talk with. read more

I am very disappointed as a pet owner of this vet clinic. I was given an itemized estimate for my 6 month old kitty's neuter and umbilical hernia repair. It is documented that it doesn't expire until 9/25/21. It showed a low estimate to a high estimate, which what I understood is the estimates meant it would range from the low to high amount. The higher estimate included Pre-Anesthetic Blood Panel and a Microchip implant. I opted out of those two things because I didn't feel it was necessary. What I also understood from what they said to me when I got the estimates is that by not doing those two things, I would pay closer to the lower estimate amount. I added in his rabies vaccine. Which I figured would be $20 or so more. When I said I was opting out, I was not told that would affect or change my estimate or that they would have to do additional things during his surgery because I opted out of the blood work. None of that was communicated to me before he had the surgery done. They ended up doing other things because he didn't have blood work done, which was more expensive than just doing the bloodwork, and was not included in my estimate. Therefore, I was charged way more and told my estimate was different than what they gave me for an estimate when I originally booked the appointment. I wasn't told if he didn't have the blood work, the other things they did (IV fluids and catheterization) was necessary for his safety. In addition, when they called me to update me on how my cat was doing, they mentioned he had fleas (a constant battle in my household), which I had been treating but losing the battle. Without asking me first, they treated him and charged me. I let that slide because the OTC treatment I was using clearly wasn't working and it wasn't that much. So I asked if I could buy treatment for my other two cats and dog, I was told I couldn't because my other two cats haven't been seen yet and my dog hasn't been seen in 18 months (because of COVID), so he isn't considered a patient anymore, and to change that I would have to schedule a wellness visit for him, which they're booking out 2 months. My other two cats have appointments already, which I booked prior to my youngest kitty's surgery. However, because of that I couldn't purchase flea treatment through them. When I questioned them and tried to discuss how none of what they've told me about my animals status as a patient at their clinic and the estimate change without my knowledge, they kept talking over me and not listening to my concerns I understand that the vet clinics were hit hard through this pandemic, but there is no excuse for lack of communication and compassion. We have all suffered in many ways because of the Pandemic. I feel as a consumer, I need all the information before a decision is made. Especially when it comes to my fur babies. I live on a monthly budget as a single mother of two kids. Our pets are our family and I struggle trusting veterinarians because this makes me feel like they don't care about my pets. It seems like all they care about is charging so much money for their services and not being transparent enough to make me want to continue bringing my business there. I would not recommend this vet clinic to my worse enemy, let alone family and friends. Unless you have deep pockets and don't live on a budget. This is not a reasonable or friendly place for your fur babies. read more

Attention all pet owners who go to Hometown Veterinary Care in Fairfield, Maine: I was FORCED to put one of my two cats down November 10th, 2022 and my second on November 28th, 2022. I am heart broken. I am a widow who is now left alone in silence at my home. My cats were my best friends and because of Hometown Veterinary Care they were ripped from me without much choice. I took care of my cats better than some take care of their children. They went for checkups every 3 months and had routine blood work and vaccinations and received any type of specialty testing that I was told I needed. I frequented emergency vet clinics whenever I thought my cats had even sneezed wrong. I never let anything go without them being seen immediately. I live on a fixed income since I am a retired widow and I gave Hometown Veterinary Care so much money to keep my cats healthy. November 10th, 2022, the day before I laid my male cat down, he started bleeding from his mouth. I immediately took him over to Lewiston Emergency Vet where they discovered that he had severe dental disease and his gums were eroding to the point where the bottom of his teeth were exposed and rotting away. I had just had my cats both seen 38 days prior at Hometown Vet for routine care and dental checks. The vet in Lewiston said that there was no way that this developed in just 38 days and that it would have taken months and months for it to get to that point. The vet in Lewiston temporarily stopped the bleeding, gave me an antibiotic, and told me to take my cat to their primary vet the next day to see what my options were. The next morning my male cat woke up in a pool of blood which came from his mouth. I called Hometown Vet and they gave me an appointment for that morning. When I arrived the vet looked briefly at his mouth and said that he had a broken jaw and unless I wanted to wait to get in to a dental specialist, whenever that might be, the only thing that I could do was euthanize him. The vet said this without any compassion, very matter-of-fact. I was not given any other options nor was I given an explanation when asked as to why I never told before that he had severe dental disease. I was completely blown off by Hometown's vet. I did the only thing that I could which was euthanize him that day after having him for 15 years. When I got home, I called the vet in Lewiston back, and asked if he had a broken jaw when he saw him the previous day and that vet said absolutely not! Two weeks later, my female cat was not eating so I immediately called Hometown Veterinary Care for an appointment and I went in later that day. I was told that she had dental disease as well which was mild-moderate. I was given the option to have her teeth cleaned with the knowledge that she had kidney disease and severe arthritis which could only worsen with the anesthesia and positioning during a teeth cleaning. I was told that there was a very good chance she wouldn't pull through post cleaning. I weighed the option for several days before going back to Hometown Vet with the intention of laying my second, and final, cat down. I was given no information except that my cat may not make it through the cleaning. I was not offered any other alternatives. I did not want my last cat to suffer like my first did. I did not want to wake up one day to her laying in a pool of blood because the vets at Hometown Veterinary Care missed her mild-moderate dental disease turning severe and having her gums rot away like her brother's did. I chose to euthanize her that same day because I felt helpless and hopeless. I do not feel as though Hometown gave their absolute best care to my cats. Hometown Veterinary Care brushed all of my concerns off and were negligent when it came to fully assessing my cats and because of this I had to euthanize both of them within 2 weeks of each other. That is the hardest thing that I have ever had to do and I am so angry and disappointed with the care that I received at Hometown Veterinary Care in Fairfield, Maine. Please be mindful before you take your beloved pets there. They only want your money, they do not have genuine concern for the pets or their owners. I will never take another animal there and I will try my hardest to deter anyone from going there in the future. read more

Hometown Vet has always been very kind and considerate of my kitties, listening to my concerns and responding satisfactorily. The staff care about our furry friends. They communicate about needed vaccinations and other care, send regular reminders for checkups. My present elder cat has had dental problems all along - he spent a few years as a stray and two years in the shelter, so his history isn't ideal. He has had dental cleaning several times, with tooth removal. This year the vet recommended that because of his age it would be best to forego the anesthesia required for this procedure, and I agreed. Cat is doing well, still quite active at times.
