On approval, I got to drive to Augusta to sorta "interview" dogs. Tigger, as I renamed him, chose me. He came up to me and put his head in my lap. The prior 2 dogs were a bit "standoffish." Once the selection was made, I found out that Maine GreyHound maintains responsibility for the dogs from cradle to grave. Had I been sick and could no longer care for the dog, they insist the dog be re-homed by them. They require the dog get a re-exam every 6 mos. They require that the dog never be let loose without a leash or a fenced back yard. They even organize search teams should your dog accidentally get free. As a retired race dog, he was fully house trained and even knew sign language commands! WowI Their Fostering system is second to none! I have never seen such strong stewardship for any other dog breed! Long story short, I had the 6 best years of my life with this beautiful brindle greyhound!

There were some people there, either in the main waiting room or walking through the separate pet areas... wasn't too busy. Was greeted by staff behind the counter and I told them I wanted to look at some cats. They have you fill out some paperwork, mainly about what you're looking for and what your home environment is like (senior cat, kittens, other pets at home, kids at home, etc) to help them in finding an appropriate cat for you. You wait for a bit so they can find a staff member to walk through the cattels with you. You get to meet them, and pick some up in some instances. I deliberated because I intended to get a senior cat, but many of them had behavioral or extra medical problems. I ended up getting a disgustingly cute and impossibly smol brother and sister, and they've been wonderful. It may not be the cheapest, depending on which pet you want to take home, but obviously that cost goes into the program and really, can you put a price on a new family member?

Horrible experience I asked for financial assistance what they could do if my male cat was blocked…read moreup because the surgery was gonna be 3,000-4,000 if he was blocked up (adding in he hasn't been seen by a vet yet) I told her my age and information and immediately told me they wouldn't be able to help and he needs to be brought in to a shelter to be surrendered to the closest shelter since I can't pay for the surgery not knowing if he is blocked up or not, Tammy the financial support told me that "I'm selfish keeping him and I need to surrender him by four" mind you it was 230 while we were on the phone. This devastated me so I called multiple other family members and they told me to get him checked out at a different vet because again he hasn't been seen and we don't know what's wrong, she then proceeds to send me a voicemail " know you're upset. Um, this is Tammy from Coast, Maine. I am so sorry that this is happening to you. I'm so sorry that this is happening to your cat, but in the best interest of the cat, if he can't pee, he is in incredible pain. Um, and it's only going to get worse. So, um, what we would like you to do is surrender him to the Lewiston Animal Emergency Clinic tonight. Um, they can unblock him and then we will go and get him tomorrow for his ongoing care. There's also going to be special food that he's going to need to be on. He might need to be on medications. If he gets blocked again, there's, unfortunately right now, in your financial circumstances, you're just not going to be able to do what he needs, for him to live a happy life, and I, I think that sucks and I'm so sorry. Um but in his best interests, we would like you to surrender him to the Lewiston Animal Emergency Clinic tonight. Um, and if you can't get there, um, then surrender him to our, uh, Brunswick campus as soon as possible. Um, so preferably before 4 today, um, and one of our staff could take him to the animal emergency clinic because our our, our vet has left for the day, probably in the next half I hate to be the one to give you this news. I really do, but there's just, you know, there's just no other way around it. um. If you would be able later on, you know to do his ongoing care. Then possibly to see about getting him back, but there's just no guarantee on that because we, we don't know everything that's going on with him. Um until he's seen by a vet so. This isn't OK and I will be reporting her if anybody else has any problems with her. Please report her because I have gotten in contact with multiple other people who have had the same struggle, her telling people to get rid of their animals, even though they have enough money. I believe she is very discriminating against people of race and people of age. I know a lot of people struggle and call her and actually can't take care of their cats, but that wasn't this case. Turns out he needed a food change and he was stressed I paid for the hole thing I just told her I couldn't pay the 3000,5000 dollar surgery she was telling me he needed, I believe it's because I told her my age and race, I just don't think it's OK cause other people wouldn't know to Bring their cat into a different vet and would end up giving up their Animal just to find out that it wasn't that serious just saying this as a warning please watch out and get your cat checked before you tell them anything. We adopted our puppy Moose (formerly known as Royce) from P.A.W.S a couple months ago. Included in his adoption fee was rabies, microchip, neuter, and first vet visit. They also gave me a 15% off coupon to the Loyal Biscuit. My only complaint is: how they have things scheduled is hard for me because of my work Schedule. Friday's and Saturday's are the best days for me to be able to drive down and do everything I need to there, unfortunately, they don't do anything on those days and I have to try and take time off work to do those things. But over all, I had a great experience and we absolutely love our new family member.

We have always followed their advice. No, not going to argue back and forth except to reiterate that we would never ignore such advice had a vet given that to us. Do you think we would have given a reference if we thought it would be in any way negative? Like I said, you may have been given false information or a misinterpretation of events by someone trying to avoid blame. or simply jumped to the wrong conclusion yourself. Cats can live a long time with this disease. He certainly was not suffering that whole time. When it was evident to us that he was, we made the hard decision to put him down ourselves, as we have had to do several times in the past with other pets. Funny- we have dealt with several other rescue organization since contacting you, and our references have always checked out.

This rescue contacted me about taking a dog for them. I politely declined as they detailed…read moreseveral aggressive instances where the dog attacked other dogs and injured one human. Since I do like to help out rescues, I researched this particular case further, and found it disturbing that this aggressive dog was passed around to 4 different foster homes and having aggressive instances at each. Because I was concerned for the families being put in danger (including their own dogs), I contacted the rescue director personally to express my concerns. I also noted that the description of the dog even after the first incident where it was reported the other dog was seriously injured, they described the rescue that they were trying to place with me as great with other dogs. After doing this, the rescue director began a campaign of encouraging her volunteers to put bogus reviews on my business site. She also directed them to my business page to harrass me as well. I would not support a rescue that does business this way. They were also posting outright lies about me on their facebook page, which were taken down after my complaints to facebook.

I've had an excellent experience working with BHS. I had never owned a dog before, and decided to…read moresign up to foster at BHS just to see if I liked it. They gave me everything I needed to take care of my dog (crate, blanket, toys, leash, food, etc.), and are excellent at providing her shots, medical care, everything. Gabby at the foster program has been diligent about keeping me up to date on my dog's needs and has been so patient with all my anxieties, like when I cut her nails too short!! They are always available to provide help and support, their facilities are clean and nice, and everyone I met has been so knowledgable and helpful. These are hardworking people trying their best and I would definitely recommend their foster program to people hesitant about being pet owners or who want to give back in some way.
