Despite some misconceptions, retired racing greyhounds make fantastic pets. They are kind, gentle and loving animals. MGPS is staffed by a wonderful group of volunteers who treat these hounds with such compassion and are extremely helpful in placing the dogs with the right families. Highly recommend!!

Adopted Bob's Real News from them 6 years ago. Had to meet them at a Meet and Greet to ask…read morequestions, and give them a chance to screen me personally. On approval, I got to drive to Augusta to sorta "interview" dogs. Tigger, as I renamed him, chose me. He came up to me and put his head in my lap. The prior 2 dogs were a bit "standoffish." Once the selection was made, I found out that Maine GreyHound maintains responsibility for the dogs from cradle to grave. Had I been sick and could no longer care for the dog, they insist the dog be re-homed by them. They require the dog get a re-exam every 6 mos. They require that the dog never be let loose without a leash or a fenced back yard. They even organize search teams should your dog accidentally get free. As a retired race dog, he was fully house trained and even knew sign language commands! WowI Their Fostering system is second to none! I have never seen such strong stewardship for any other dog breed! Long story short, I had the 6 best years of my life with this beautiful brindle greyhound!
