Refrigerated sodas

Unassuming little place on the main street. An intended ICE arrest had led to a death by an ICE agent earlier today. A friend and I, rattled, decided to take his dog for a walk through their new neighborhood. We'd intended to visit Homi and other POC eateries soon. No time like the present, given current state of affairs. Grabbed an order of birria tacos and a large horchata to share before walking the two blocks back to their place to enjoy. The order took longer than expected, considering no diners or pickup orders. Was glad to see the ICE situation playing on their TV, which they were actively watching before we arrived, instead of maintaining a perfect dining environment while this tenuous situation was developing in our cities. My first time having birria tacos. Oh, I've been missing out! Definitely adding to my regular orders. Juicy, tender chunks of meat, plenty of consomé for dipping. The double taco shell with melted cheese layered in between was too much for me personally, but I could see that being very popular with the general public. The horchata was sweeter than I prefer and a tad watery for my taste. Especially given we'd found our favorite horchata in the Twin Cities yet a few weeks ago nearby. The place we recently visited remains our top favorite in the area, but this spot will see plenty of visits given its decent quality and proximity to my friends' new home.

We were in St. Paul for a volleyball tourney and went hunting for an authentic Mexican lunch and stumbled across Homi. If you're not a local, don't let the strip-mall setting fool you. This place is the real deal. They're serving up authentic Mexican food just like an abuela would make. Carnitas, carne asada, and a cold Mexican Coke hit the spot in this laid-back, cafeteria-style spot. They also do a Sunday brunch that sounds amazing, so if you're feeling adventurous, let's go!

Birria Tacos with a side of rice.

Enjoyed lunch at Homi Mexican. Big menu of options but I knew what I wanted before I walked in. I've driven by many y times as saw the board outside the front door- "We serve Birria Tacos!" That's what drew me in and that was what I ordered. The inside it basic but functional about 6-7 tables. I was greeted by a lovely lady for my order. She was friendly and professional. She took my order and asked if I wanted a beverage? She then suggested a Limonata. I said yes! The food arrived quickly and smoking hot. The portion was 3 generously stuffed double tortilla shells packed with melted cheese, beef and topped with cilantro and onions. The consommé was warm and helped take off some of the temperature of the tacos. The tacos came with a green salsa that I tasted and knew was to spicy for my taste. A side of rice and beans are included but I opted for just rice. The tacos were very delicious with tender shredded beef. After 2 of the three I had to ask for a to go box. Great food and service.

This place has the best birria tacos I've tried in the twin cities. There's no place you can find them this good, flavorful and packed with birria! I don't consider myself a picky eater but I do get picky when it comes to tacos. When I'm asked where are the best tacos, I never have an answer... but now I have a suggestion if I'm ever asked. A suggestion that I know won't disappoint. First of all, the tacos were served generously. The tortilla was warmed up with some of the birria meat juice for flavor, double tortilla with melted mozzarella in between, jam packed of birria-- they were not shy adding that meat on these tacos. Second, the meat was cooked to perfection, full of flavor and juicy. Finally, the consomé was delicious, bold and great for dipping the tacos. I was impressed by the price, typically this meal costs $15 but with such little meat in other places but here it was huge. I even took a taco to go because I could not finish them. In conclusion, you should go try these tacos! The restaurant itself is nothing fancy, just functional to operate the business. I do hope they improve this to create a more welcoming dine-in experience. I noticed they have plenty of take-out orders, so it makes sense that their focus isn't on how the dine-in area looks like.

I returned here for the first time in a while based on some good buzz, and the buzz was not kiddin'! My friend actually drove all the way from Maple Grove at lunchtime on a weekday because he was so excited about how good he heard their new birria tacos are. We both got them and we were both really, really satisfied! Not only that, everything else we had was good enough to warrant a new review with top ratings; I feel very confident in recommending this to anyone hungry for Mexican food in the Twin Cities. The birria tacos are shredded beef in a double-tortilla-plus-cheese situation, served with a broth which you can dip the tacos in or eat like a soup. We dipped and dipped and dipped and it was awesome. My friend, who, again, went way out of his way to have his craving for good birrias satisfied, was even more impressed with their horchata. He loves authentic horchata and thinks this was one of the best he's ever had. The elotes, Mexican-style corn on the cob, was exceptionally yummy even if it looked modest. Even my sides of beans and rice were above average; they were just really well made. They have a number of delivery options now, so I expect to be ordering from them much more regularly, and I expect my pal to drop by from the MG more often as well!

I've jumped on the birria craze and decided to try Homi because it was presented on a list of good spots for this. The birria broth was extremely good. It wasn't overly salty, and I believe the broth was made from beef (it's supposedly made from lamb traditionally)! It was hard to dip my taco because the broth made me want to eat it like soup instead. The tacos came with two shells and had cheese in between. Creative, but it didn't add much because the fried shells appeared to be fried inconsistently because of this. Also, the tamales were a little bland and under seasoned. I always want to be wowed by tamales, but a lot of offerings seem to suffer from this same critique. Maybe this is my, "it's not you, it's me" moment. Regardless, I wasn't impressed. This place is better than any comparable chain, but if pitted authentic vs authentic it'd lose to other places in the cities.

If you haven't been here, what are you even doing?!…read more My favorite spot for Mexican food is @elburritomercado in St. Paul. You may also recognize their logo at the MN State Fair and their food truck at various events. Overall if you've never been to their actual restaurant and market... you gotta. They have a full market and goods side to find all of your needs to take home and cook. As well as prepared items to bring home, heat and serve. I highly suggest this for taco night at home. Everything is fresh, delicious and made there in house. They have a walk up order area with casual seating, a full sit down restaurant area and an awesome patio. In the warmer months they have their Elotes truck out near the back entrance. The customer service is friendly, welcoming and very helpful if you have questions or need recommendations. I recently was shopping the grab and go deli and was trying to decide what meat to go with and two separate regular shoppers pointed me to some awesome picks so shout out to helpful strangers. I'll pass it along if I see someone staring at the wall of options someday. The staff working the deli window was also extremely helpful in picking out a good salsa heat level and gave a few samples to ensure my decision. The tacos and quesadillas are solid and definitely worth trying, but I've been disappointed with the burritos and the pork al pastor. The carne asada burrito looked substantial at first, but it was overwhelmingly filled with plain white rice, which made it feel bland and not what I'd expect in terms of flavor or balance. The pork al pastor was even more disappointing. It didn't resemble traditional al pastor in taste or texture. It was overly sweet, lacked depth, and the pork itself was extremely dry, unfortunately dry enough to make it difficult to finish. There are still some good items on the menu, and the service keeps me open to giving them another try but based on my experience, I wouldn't describe the food overall as authentic or five-star quality.
