I cannot believe this is my 600th review and a very meaningful one. Time flies sometimes like a shooting star...bright, beautiful and quick. Honey Bee Quilt store was my destination as I was seeking a quilt restoration location. Honey Bee Quilt store was lined with beautifully designed and sewn quilts. Interestingly, you can rent a large quilting machine in store. Someone was sewing a quilt while I was in the store. Of the quilt stores I have frequented, Honey Bee has the largest and most intricately sewn quilts. When I was small child, I remember my mother hand sewing these beautiful quilts. These were not the beautiful quilts with perfect squares, octagon or star patterns. In addition, they did not have the white filling that some quilts have nowadays. However, they were extremely warm, cozy and made with love. My mother sewed her quilts from clothing that her children no longer wore and from pieces she found in thrift stores. The inside of her quilts were clothing laid flat and tacked together. Rewinding to those times, I sat in a red Mexican wooden chair with little colorful flowers across on the back of the chair with a strong Raffia like seat. As my mother sat and sewed her quilts, I read to her, which is first how I gained a love for reading. While I grew up in a single parent household, it was filled with a tremendous amount of love and laughter. My father died as result of a work-related accident when I was 7 seven years old. I associate my mom's quilt with the love in our household and my love of her. Fast-forward to today, my one and only quilt I have from my mom has materials that are moving around. Therefore, they need to be redistributed and tacked down. This restoration effort first led me to a store on Anderson Lane and then to Honey Bee Quilt store. Unfortunately, both stores only sale sewing supplies and/or sewing machines. I met the nicest woman at Honey Bee that referred me to a Sewing Guild in Austin. So, I am extremely hopeful that one of the ladies in the Sewing Circle can help restore my mom's quilt, which has a great deal of intrinsic and sentimental value. read more

Part of the All Texas Quilt Shop Hop, I ventured into Honey Bee Quilt Store for the first time after driving past it often. Tucked into a shopping strip I wasn't sure what to expect but the fabric selection was nice and it varied from my normal local quilt shop so that was fun. The staff were friendly and they were extremely busy. I really loved the selection of patterns and pattern books. Definitely plan to go back and peruse a bit more leisurely next time. Open Monday-Saturday and nowhere close to my home office, I'm limited on when I can get there, but will be worth the effort now and then. read more

I love your store especially the quilting service that I have brought my quilts there. They were beautifully done. There's 1 problem that I think an employee discriminate me by NOT calling me to inform me about the completion of my quilt. I waited for 2 months until yesterday I went to the store and asked for my quilt. An employee looked for it and found it. I saw a paper that said I'm DEAF with my text phone number and another landline nbr. You should fire that employee who was responsible for not calling me. That's is a negligence and discrimination against me. The quilt was completed about 2 weeks ago. Your employee has a negative attitude. I should be respected and Remove the word "deaf" on the paper. That's is an invasion of my privacy. read more

An oasis for quilters. They always joke whoever dies with the most material wins, my wife has been quilting since the 1980s, and is always looking to keep her stash supplied. Quilting being a creative hobby, she has to have a selection to drag out and mix/match for whatever project she's working on. Fabric stores in general, and quilting shops in particular can be challenging to find these days. This is one place she always find something unique for her projects, and she does go on for several blocks driving away at how awesome a shop it is. We drive in from Temple, and it's worth the drive to her to add to her hoard of material to gloat over when she's not using it. I would like to say that this is a reputable business, however, after the interaction today this is absolutely not the case. As part of the American Legion Riders, my wife made a t-shirt quilt to donate for auction which will support the veterans and children foundation. We had approached the owner's wife about donating the quilting, to which she happily agreed. The quilt was delivered to them about 2 weeks ago and we received a call today from the owner (husband) backing out and giving an excuse that "we don't do custom quilts" (my wife embroidered a label on the back for the our Post). The employees lied and told the boss that they told my wife about "no labels", which is not the case because my wife had several conversations (which I was party to) with them about the label and where to put it. It's a shame that a local business won't keep their commitment to support our veterans and we will no longer be supporting them. read more

Love the selection and staff at Honey Bee. I get some good deals shopping their sale table (when they have it). They have a lot of great quilting fabric lines and the staff are happy to help you figure out how much yardage you need to finish a project. Very well lit and organized. read more

My all time favorite quilt store-they have beautiful fabric to choose from, service machines, and offer an array of classes taught by very patient, extremely skilled quilters. The staff are welcoming and have been exceptionally nice and helpful. I signed up for a paper piecing quilt class-and as a new quilter (and brand new to paper piecing), have found it rather challenging-the instructor has been very patient and always available for help. They also have different monthly clubs to join-each month you complete one square of the quilt-and at the end of the year have a large beautiful quilt to assemble! read more

I brought my quilt to them to finish the backing and then to machine quilt. Seems easy enough. They did not do what was asked with the backing so it looks like a child put it together. When I said something they just said, "Nobody sees the back." Oh, really? I'll never go back there again! read more

Quilt shops should be friendly, inspiring, and helpful. Normally, I love any excuse to go to a quilt shop. Honey Bee is the closest shop to my house, but it's not a very pleasant place to visit. The staff often shout at each other from one side of the shop to another. I've caught them gossiping and talking bad about customers who just walked out of the shop. They often look down on me (perhaps because of my age?), thinking they have to explain the smallest detail about quilting (when, in reality, I've probably been quilting longer than they have and I've even worked at a shop before!). The staff may or may not welcome you when you arrive & will answer direct questions, but just aren't that friendly. The fabric selection is decent, and they have quite a few bolts to choose from. The fabric prices have gone up in the past year or so (with many fabrics now being $11.75/yd). They carry quite a bit of the Thimbleberries line and some batiks, plus calico-type prints sorted by color. They have some modern & juvenile prints, but not a ton. They don't stock many (any?) solid colors. They carry some pre-cuts (charm squares & the like) but don't seem to always get bolts of fabric to match the pre-cuts, making them a bit less useful. They have quite a few samples on the wall, but many of them are just not that inspirational, with flat color choices and limited style range. Their notions selection is top-notch, though, and they tend to keep up with the latest gadets. Overall, Honey Bee is just OK. I'll go there when I need fabric or notions for a quick project, but I usually drive out of Austin when I want a good shop. read more

I am a school librarian, and wanted to make a dress out of the Dr. Seuss fabric line, which I apparently missed when it came out and didn't know until 6 months later. I really need an awesome dress to wear on March 2nd- Dr. Seuss' birthday. It's a huge "holiday" at my school. I called around to see which one had the specific print I want, from San Marcos to Georgetown- and this one had it for the cheapest and they're 5 minutes from my house. Hooray! They checked over the phone, which was really nice, I thought. When I got there, I was in love with all of their fabrics. They had a great selection of the names I love, and a ton of the Dr. Seuss I was specifically looking for. I love the example projects and quilts they have up every where too. The ladies were SO nice. I didn't hear any gossip, and they knew it was my first time in there. They gave me a sheet with the classes, told me some other special things about their store, and seemed to be genuinely happy that I was so amped on all of their cool quilts on the walls. I really want to find time to take a quilting class with them. I love the location and they were super nice. read more

When visiting my Children & Grandchild in Austin, Texas, I came across this quilt shop on google. I made the 35 minute trek and boy was I glad that I did. The ladies in the shop were very friendly & most helpful. I will visit Honey Bee Quilt Store again on my next visit to Austin. read more

The guy that does their sewing machine repairs charged me $65 and didn't fix a thing. Tried to tell me it was supposed to be like that. Find someone else to work on your machine. read more

My favorite fabric store used to be Austin Craft-o-Rama, if that gives you an idea of my fabric "style". But I love HoneyBee, and now that ACR is closed, I come here for my cotton fabric needs. They are well-focused on the quilting stuff, as their stock is 99% woven cotton. Since I'm not much of a quilter, it's sometimes troublesome to have to drive across the highway to Hancock for all those other types of random fabrics I might need. But their cotton selection is great, which is why I love going. I love their rack with the AmyButler/JoelDewberry/MichaelMiller/AnnaMariaHorner stuff, which reminds me of ACR. The store is well-organized by color and theme, they have a cute kids-themed fabric section complete with toys where my toddler goes to town with their play kitchen, and the staff is friendly and not overbearing. People who come in seem like old friends who share their projects and discuss all sorts of quilt-y things. Prices are pretty average, perhaps a bit higher than the Hancocks without Hancock-coupons. But for inspiration and pretty cotton fabrics in NW Austin, this is the place to go. read more

Ok, perhaps you need to be a really regular customer to get friendly service here. I have been several times and spent quite a bit of money on fabric, but have never been treated that well. I agree that I overhear the employees gossiping and talking, and seem to be more caught up in chatting than helping customers. I actually have to go up and ask directly for help. Response is usually something like "over there" and pointing. And I agree that there are no solids anywhere. Very strange. I really like my Kona solids. read more

I am always overwhelmed when it comes to picking out a selection of colors for a new quilt. I managed to narrow down my choices to batiks and went into Honey Bee Quilt Store to make my selections. It was quickly a daunting task but the ladies in the store, including Diane, the owner, all gave their input and pulled out colors for me to consider. It was extremely helpful to have their input and I am very appreciative of their patience. I would not expect this kind of help every time or especially if they are busy. Arrived on a Sunday a 1:00 when the shop opened. A young woman at the desk was too busy listening to her I pod to even acknowledge me. The owners were busy with a quilt class, so I waited in the shop for 30 minutes. Not one person ever acknowledged me or offered to help, so I left and will not be back. read more
