    Nick's Fried Pies

It has become abundantly clear to me that I have to start up a cooking class for teaching the art…read moreof making Fried Fruit Pies. I'm talking about those Southern delectibles like our grandmothers used to make - REAL fried pies. I'm not talking about some thrown together mess of a pastry that is filled with some mess that is supposed to be the fruit filling. At the Ren Faire yesterday, I bought a peach and apple pie from one of the vendors. I began talking to him by telling him that one of my fried pies would be the best that anyone ever put into their mouth (ask Patsy Morgan, Cindy Murrah, or anyone else who has ever tasted mine). I told him how my fried pies are REAL ones, totally made from scratch, with real pastry that is made the REAL way, and REAL fruit filling that is made the REAL way, etc. Oh, he went on to tell me how his also were. Should you ever stumble upon Nick's Fried Pies at some event you are attending, you will be disappointed. That is, IF you know what a REAL fried fruit pie is supposed to be made. With his assurance that they were REAL pies, I did not dispute his $6.00 a pie cost, because I know the time and effort that goes into making them. And, I know the taste is worth it. However, I ultimately regret that I spent $12.00 on two pies that Nick misrepresented as being real. Well, they were real pies, but they were not REAL pies. The apple filling had a good taste, but it was canned apples (maybe canned apple pie filling?). The pastry on that one was beautifully browned, but the edge was too hard to eat. The pastry on the peach one was much softer. In fact, it was soggy wet. That is because he simply used canned peaches. Take my word for it, his pies are NOT REAL! I've sampled the pies of many makers who claim to make them the right way and warrant them to be the best. What I have found in their pies, though, is absolute disappointment and failure to meet the criteria that is needed for a REAL fried pie. When making these pies from scratch (as I do), they are not difficult to make; however, they are very time consuming to make. Somewhere along the way, someone began looking for easier, quicker ways to make them. While their easier ways to result in a fried pie, I assure you they are not REAL fried pies. What I have discovered is that the art of making REAL fried fruit pies has become lost. Way lost! If you're interested in learning how to make REAL fried fruit pies, let me know. You will pay for the ingredients and pay me a nominal teacher's fee. Plus, you will give me a share of the pies that I teach you to make. It is a lost art, and one that definitely needs to be preserved for future generations. Otherwise, the day will come when no one has the faintest idea of what a REAL fried fruit pie is supposed to be.

The country store attendant visited the men's room ahead of me, tidying up after he used the facilities himself and then washing his hands. Nice! The restaurant was mildly busy but not so much that we had to wait for a table. Rainbow trout for Mrs. K. with fried apples and carrots. Meatloaf for me with mac & cheese and green beans. A good mix that we shared between ourselves. The sweet tea was not too sweet. We enjoyed our meal! Normally, we'd be parking up and staying the night but it's only 4pm and there are a couple more hours of daylight driving. Yes, Cracker Barrel tolerates the RVers using their parking lot for overnight. This time, dinner without staying. [Review 2292 of 2024 - 113 in Mississippi - 23307 overall]

They have a great wait time notification system that texts your phone when your table is ready, that's the best part of this establishment! My main complaint is that the service is slow, they prices are on the high side... and all of the food looks and tastes like it came straight out of a Can. Canned beans, greens, canned gravy ! Makes you feel insulted when you get the check . Just do think we will be back

She had a great attitude which made up for the slower than expected service. It wasn't terribly slow just not the usual fast paced breakfast service but we were not in a hurry and kind of enjoyed not feeling rushed! Kem's is located inside the Holiday Inn. You can enter through the main entrance of the hotel. It's a nice size dining area which booths and tables. The booths have tv's on the wall to entertain you while you wait. It's really quiet at 8:30am on a Saturday. The coffee is decent and the food comes out hot, fresh and in decent time. We enjoyed what we ordered. The 'InnJoyable' breakfast @ $7.50 and the Start Fresh Wrap @ $7.50. I have to say the wrap was very good but they served it with a white flour tortilla rather than the whole wheat as listed on the menu. The country potatoes served with were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The orange juice is Minute Maid not fresh squeezed. There is a nice sized bar area as well that we may visit this evening! Overall we thought the service was good and the food better. We would come back

This service was great and the food was delicious! My husband had the ribeye which was cooked just right and filled with all the grilled flavors and seasonings you expect and crave. He also had the homemade pub chips and they are addictive. Clearly they were freshly cooked and so savory that I couldn't help stealing from his plate all night. I had the Monterrey chicken and it was very good too. The chicken was so juicy and tender; d never quite had one cooked so perfectly while eating out. If I lived here, I'd come here all the time!! The only feedback I have (which is a gnat on a bulls ass compared to how good this was) is that they really should revamp their lighting. It felt like a hotel lobby, bright and in your face.
