I've been going to Hong Kong Cafe since 2001 but since I no loner work in Stratford, I've don't go there as often. I think the place changed owners... or this is a second generation of the family running it? Either way, it's not as good as it used to be. We recently stopped in for dinner on a Sunday. Our waiter was very friendly but his smile was the only nice thing about our visit. We both visited the restrooms (men & women) and as soon as we both returned to our table we shared our disgust with the state of the restrooms. Old, ripped, discolored wallpaper in the ladies room and a greasy faucet and door handle in the men's room. Dark black spots on the ceiling (rust or mold?) and back at the table things were not much better... Our "tea" arrived, only it poured clear, like water. I thought they forgot to add tea, so I lifted the lid and was horrified at the black ring on top of the tea strainer (mold or oxidization?) and the "tea" in the strainer did NOT look fresh, it looked like old, dry grass. Considering there was no color or flavor to it, I think the tea leaves were recycled from a previous customer. Before we poured the tea we noticed discoloration inside the tea cups and the silverware looked like it needed to be washed better. The waiter brought crispy noodles & a dish of duck sauce. The crispy noodles (which I have always LOVED at this restaurant!) were heavy with oil & flavorless... nothing like the crunchy, tasty noodles that I used to order from this restaurant every week. We ordered 2 egg rolls and 1 wonton soup, but before it arrived, we decided to eat dinner elsewhere. A restaurant MUST be clean and the food MUST be fresh. We had experienced enough to doubt the cleanliness and taste, so we asked the waiter to pack the egg rolls & soup to go, paid for it and left. In the car, we sampled an egg roll. Did not taste or see any pork in it. the wonton soup was NOT like it used to be. It was heavy and salty. I cannot vouch for their meals but we will not be back, based on our experience. I've had a challenge lately finding lo mein that tastes like I used to get as a teenager. Everyone is probably cooking healthy and using low sodium sauces, so it's forgiven that my food didn't taste like childhood memories. My lo mein was ok. My partner threw away the short ribs and vowed never to eat Chinese again. If it were solely up to me, I'd give a four star. The ribs brought it down. Sorry HKC. She was nice and I was waiting for my food outside the restaurant, she came out side to let I know the food was ready for pick up... Oh no! What happened?!? Years ago this was our go-to restaurant. We moved, but were back in the area and stopped by to get a to go order. We were very excited to have food from Hong Kong Cafe. Sadly, I guess there are new owners. The quality of the food has plummeted. The vegetables used to be fresh and wonderful. The chicken was really good quality. Every dish was deliciously healthy and the sauces were perfectly mixed. What we got recently? The chicken in the fried rice was literally not edible - rubbery, globs of something we couldn't identify. The vegetables were probably fresh at some point, but again, a huge disappointment from what they used to serve. the sauces smothered the dishes so that you could barely tell what was what. What happened. Prices have skyrocketed and inconsistent. Portions have gone down which doesn't make sense since the prices went up. Even the duck sauce they give is watered down now. Not sure I can continue being a customer. Hopefully they address this. read more

I've been going here since I was a teenager (2001 i believe) because it was walking distance from my house and I thought it was better than the other places in town. The new owners everything just sucks now. Everything is smaller portions more money and doesn't taste the way it did. oily, less flavor. etc. My expectations are SO low for take out that I could honestly forgive ALL of this in exchange for getting quick food every once in a while when i dont have time or energy to go to the grocery store/cook. But the thing I cant get over is how rude the woman ( i assume owner ) is every single time I have gone there to pick up my food. There has never been an issue, I have never ONCE complained about a dish, or been late to pick up my food, or asked for extra this or extra that. I dont even ask for soy sauce for christ sake bc shes so rude i know she would actually sigh/ scoff. I order the same damn thing every time and i pick it up with a smile and say thank you when she hands me my bag yet she treats me like i am dirt. She is a complete ***** every single time I go there. never once said thank you for coming or here is your food, thank you. nothing. She is so rude and so bad at customer service that I made a yelp, lol. And i'm from nyc where restaurants are rude all the time to you bc they are busy and dont have to be nice bc if you leave they will still be busy without you. advice: say thank you or at least not be actively b****y once in a while! You lost another customer though something tells me she wont care, if she did she wouldnt have been like this in the first place. I don't expect conversation or to be treated special in the least. Just someone who isn't LITERALLY mean and rude. I love Chinese food, but have a very sensitive stomach when it comes to It because I have a bad reaction to MSG. I hadn't been able to find one Chinese food restaurant that I could eat at until my husband found Hong Kong Cafe. This place serves the best Chinese food! My husband grew up in Long Island, so he's had many experiences with Chinese food, and he says this is by far the best he's ever had! Everything is fresh and the staff is wonderful! HKK is my current go-to Chinese. Food is consistently good quality and is always ready quickly. "home-made" duck sauce is awesome. Occasionally there is a dish that is under seasoned, like the chicken with vegetables, but everything is always cooked properly. For dine-in, the space is small but lunch prices are affordable, and the service is always excellent. The waiter juggles order-taking, phone-answering, and cleanup without missing a beat. Just ordered a take out for the first time - it was a solid 4 stars Chinese food. We usually get our Chinese food from a place that is closer to home, but wanted to try something new. I am glad we did. The food is prepared very well, meaning it's not overly greasy - not too much much batter on General Tso's chicken, vegetables steamed just right. Delicious food! Chicken was breaded perfectly without too much breading. The edamame beans were cooked to perfection and the chicken was golden brown. If I could give NO stars I would! The woman at the front has a horrible attitude. I simply asked her, how long it would take for my food to be finished. The reason for this question was, she previously told me a time that passed. She then was very loud and embarrassing. Instead of stating "I'm sorry Sr. It shouldn't be much longer." She said, did I want my food to still be pink. It's not done. On top of that, the chicken was not shaved properly and still had hairs on it! Gross. Threw it away! Best Chinese I've had in years - and I'm picky. Crispy noodles with shrimp - the sauce was excellent. Moo Shu Shrimp also delicious. Very fresh. The best Chinese food in New England. I am a chef, and this is my favorite place to eat. The ingredients are fresh, the vegetables are not overcooked, and the owners remember their customers. The service is old school and very formal. Timely service as well. The price is slightly more than most Chinese food places in the area ( $1 to $3 dollars more).... But you are paying for the quality and respect for the ingredients. The food is crisp and the sauce is not gooey and loaded with corn starch like most places. Trust me.... Since this is the best chinesefood in Stratford they are allowed to charge the amount they do for the quality product they provide. What a great spot! Open 16 years in Stratford says something!! Been going here for all 16 and so have many others. I don't know a whole lot about authentic Chinese but I never have a bad meal here. Good price beautiful intimate seating and lovely staff. Why not 5 stars you may ask? again I don't know enough about Chinese food to say it's perfect but God/Buddha knows it's close.
