I don't understand the bad reviews on this restaurant. I guess each person has their own individual preferences. Maybe it was just an "off" day, or maybe it was just a different style of Chinese cooking than they were used to. It can happen anywhere. My husband and I have been going here to eat since the 1990's. We have experienced the change of owners over the years. I am a particularly fussy person when it comes to food. My husband enjoys trying different foods. We both love going there and the food has always been excellent. The staff have always gone out of their way to be friendly and accommodating. We enjoy going to a place that still has a little "old style" Chinese restaurant atmosphere. We hate going to buffets where the atmosphere is cold and the food may have been sitting out for hours. We appreciate the personal attention they give to their patrons. Their prices have been very reasonable. We look forward to our "visits" at this very special restaurant. I hope anyone who had a less than stellar experience at this restaurant will give it another try. You may see things differently. read more

If I could give a score of zero, I would have. The General Tso's chicken was not like anything I've ever eaten! The sauce was tastless, the broccoli had a very strong vinegar taste and not spicy. (not supposed to have vinegar) The chicken was dry. The pork fried rice tasted burnt. I tried this place because of the high ratings. I've never left a bad review, ever. There was not one thing that tasted remotely like Chinese food. If I had to guess, I would think this was a combination of leftovers thrown together by a five year old. I guess everyone has their taste on things. But honestly the Hot and Sour soup is not supposed to taste like that. It's not supposed to be sweet. No where in the name Hot and Sour do you see sweet?? The Pork dumplings were nothing but dough. There was minimal pork. The Beef dish was lathered with oil. I guess if people like greasy oily food. This is the place for them. Not 100% sure how I am not the first to review this place, but I'll let it slide FREDDA R..... This is your standard Chinese place, the food was pretty decent. They have these fried mini wanton noodles that are great to sprinkle in your saucy dishes. I won't go and say the food is a cut above, but it's decent. The selection is ok, I've seen better, but I've also seen worse. I think this place is what you'd called a local institution when it comes to chinese food. It includes a whimsical tale of moving from one building, to the building next to it and changing nothing in a way of floor plans or decoration. It basically teleported. Pretty much every single time I've visited my grandmother, we include a trip to Hong Kong Palace. It is typical, East Coast style Hong Kong/Szechuan Chinese cuisine. I think I've been here, ooohhh.....maybe about 50 or 60 times? I have yet to try something that was not TOTALLY AWESOME. The inside of the restaurant is nothing special, but the staff and the food are top-notch. I have brought many, many guests here and they always love it. It's inexpensive & delicious. This is our Chinese restaurant of choice in the area. We dine in or do takeaway - about 50/50. EXCELLENT Takeaway Service - quick and accurate. Hot and Sour Soup - delicious and not greasy Pork spare ribs - messy tasty fun. szechuan beef - thin slivers of carrots and spicy beef Hot tea with your meal when sitting down. GOOD: Steamed dumplings chicken and broccoli service is friendly and normally quite quick except when it's really busy. NOT SO GOOD Crispy Duck - but i should have expected it to be a little greasy. TOP TIP The first snow seems to bring out the need to eat Chinese. So it may be busy then. read more

Hong Kong Palace is the best Chinese food in the area. I've tried all the places in Washington and they are horrible. I keep expanding my perimeter in hopes to find a halfway decent Chinese food place, and finally expanding all the way into Hackettstown, Hong Kong Palace is the first place I found deserving of a 3 Stary - A-OK rating. First time ordering. Huge portions but not that good. The veggie egg roll was awesome tasting but it was the greasiest egg roll I have ever had. The fried rice was also very good, should have stuck with just that. We ordered fried dumplings and they had an off putting taste and way too doughy. They should have made them with traditional thinner dough. I also ordered the general tso chicken and when I ordered she said it was not traditional, more vinegar and tangy taste. The flavor I loved but what ever they coated the chicken in was was too thick and crunchy. Glad we tried a new place but we will keep searching for our go to Chinese take out. read more

So, so, very, very disappointed! Food was so bland, had absolutely no taste whatsoever! My main dish was swimming in sauce, and not tasty at all! No sauces, meaning soy, or duck,and not even a cookie! Poor taste! I am so not used to this, no flavor at all! Was so looking forward to having a nice meal, and it wasn't cheap either,...! I've been going here for so many years that it's amazing that I haven't reviewed it yet! The wonton soup is perfect, homemade wontons bathed in a not-greasy broth with generous pieces of pork. The home made egg rolls are quality every time and we love them with the home made mustard and duck sauce mixed - delish. Last visit ordered the spare ribs; these are not low quality, chewy ribs like you get at lesser Chinese restaurants, these are ample, tender ribs impeccably sauced. Nice! The pork in bean curd and the Szechuan beef were our other choices and were both spot on. Each dish has its own flavor. I think some of the reviewers are so used to super salty low quality Chinese food and maybe have never eaten in Chinatown or had a Chinese friend cook for them that they don't know good Chinese? This used to be a great place to eat with outstanding food and good prices. I ordered chicken lo mein qt. and a large beef spare ribs. When I arrived for pick up they said $33.65. I should have walked right out. Strike one. They said it was a full rack of ribs for the large. I got home it wasn't. Strike two. The ribs were good but the lo mein sucked. Six tiny strips of chicken the size of worms you put on a fish hook. A couple chopped up snow peas and a couple pieces of cabbage. The noodles were overcooked and zero flavor. Strike three. Ill never go back and I suggest you stay clear. read more

I have been eating at Hong Kong Palace for over 20 years, it is by far the best Chinese food in Warren County, I would say it is on par with Mr. Chu's in Hanover... However I can appreciate each person having their own tastes, but anyone reviewing Hong Kong Palace, and saying it's below average has no idea what excellent Chines food is! Walking in the decor is beyond outdated but kept up nicely. The entire restaurant staff was polite and accommodating. I liked that they had a family style meal choice for two. We chose wonton soup, egg rolls, general tso's chicken a noodle dish and fried rice. The general tso's chicken was absolutely delicious and probably the best I've had! It was full of actual chicken pieces - unlike many other Chinese restaurants which are usually full of fried breading. Everything came out fresh, hot and absolutely delicious. My only complaint is about the fried rice, to me it was really bland. We will definitely be returning here again soon! read more

We went here in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. The food was awful. The hot and sour soup had a different taste than I was used to, but also was mostly liquid with just a bit of other stuff. The egg roll was more grease than food, and the food was mostly cabbage. I ordered chicken with peanuts, and they came out with some sort of cashew dish. When they finally came to check on us, I sent it back. They brought back the right dish almost immediately -- except it was undercooked. They never came back to check on us, so I didn't get a chance to get it redone. They were nice about taking it off the bill, but that's the only good part of the entire experience. Service was weak at a time when the restaurant was nearly empty, and the food was not cooked well at all. I don't have high expectations of Chinese food far away from a big city, but this was even below those expectations. read more

This place used to be good but it has gone downhill. Had some of the worst Chinese food there recently and 3 of the 4 of us each didn't like our dishes. The shrimp and lobster sauce was bland, the chicken and broccoli tasted pasty and the general's chicken was breaded weird, giving it a funky taste. Ok it's been 12 years in the area before I got to go here. Place was decent sit down, nothing fancy. Clean but a bit dated (think 90's). Service was polite and good overall, no issues there. I'd them them 4 stars there. Food... We ordered soup and a po poo platter for app as well as ribs. Ribs were excellent. Platter was good, not great. I thought the chicken wings we a bit dry and the little egg rolls tasted like those from a box. Steak on a stick was excellent. My wife and I liked the presentation of the main dishes (chicken and broccoli and chicken with garlic sauce) but the taste we both thought was very bland. Have been in here a few times and enjoyed our meals every time. The family deals are great in that you get a soup, egg roll, main entrée and dessert. They are flexible with what entrees you order (doesn't have to be from what it says on the menu). The food is always delicious and there are always leftovers. We order the 4 meals for 5 people and tend to bring home lots of leftovers. The place is BYOB. It's nothing fancy but it's good food and very friendly staff. read more

Hands down the best place around. Their food is delicious, their customer service rocks, and their meat is what it's supposed to be! Their chicken is chicken, let's just leave it at that. They let you customize your dish which is amazing for us foodies. Personally, no onions no bean sprouts in the rice (yes you can do that!). Plus if you like your fried rice with scrambled egg, you you're in luck. Their egg rolls are amazing and I've never liked them in 25 years until I had one here. Consistently good. This is the only Chinese restaurant that makes sweet and sour chicken that doesn't taste like dry chicken nuggets.
