Small mom and pop store. Come at right time and you'll find a decent selection of fish. Worth stopping by once in a while. Never have had a bad experience or dealt with rudeness from owners. Just got some pencilfish recently. They're notoriously skittish and jumpy but the lady had them well fed and desensitized to human presence. The lady told me I could put pea puffers in my sorority beta tank and that pea puffers are extremely peaceful she LIED. After 3 days I can see the pea puffer bit all my betas fins, including my other fish ?? Do not recommend this place. They lie for business. I bought my four goldfish on Tuesday. This past week. The lady was so so nice and helpful. But I think my fish are dying. She told me I might have a parasite I. The tank and I have treated the tank and nothing. My fish don't swim very much they either stay at the bottom or float at the top. The lady who helped told me to keep an eye on them to see a difference but I can't tell any difference. I spent $70.00 4 gold fish water testers and so on. This fish store is in the same complex as my doctors office which I have been going to for years (doctor's office). I decided to pop in and take a look. Saw a Mandarin Goby. I've been wanting a mandarin goby but am aware they typically feed off live food like copepods and such; my aquarium is not setup for live food at the moment. I was informed that the fish store feeds their tanks frozen food. So I assumed the mandarin goby in their tank would eat frozen food of which I have plentiful of. I asked for the price; the lady quoted me a price. I decided to purchase the mandarin goby. At the register she decides to bumped up the price by an additional $5 telling me she quoted me the wrong price. Fair enough, honest mistake. I brought the goby home. After a couple weeks I noticed it started getting skinny. It was not eating the frozen food I was feeding my tank; the fish store claim to be feeding their tanks with the same frozen food I had. I realize then that this goby did not eat frozen food and only preferred live food as most goby did. I ended up having to purchased live copepods to feed the goby. Decided to pop in last week to talk to someone about what to feed the mandarin goby. Another person reassured me they only feed their tanks frozen food and no live copepods Eventually the goby died possibly due to hunger. It was completely my fault the goby did not have enough live food to eat and I cannot blame the fish store that this particular goby, like most goby's, preferred live food. I came by yesterday before my doctor's appt: saw another goby. Spoke to the lady to confirm that this particular goby will be ok with frozen food. She reassured me that she feed the whole tank frozen food only. I decided to give it one more shot and purchase another goby. I asked the lady if the goby's are the same price. She said no, each one is a different price. Their was no price tag posted on the tank; I asked the lady how much is the particular one that I wanted. She quoted me a price. By the time I decided to purchase the fish, the man came out and told me he will have to charge me $9.50 MORE then the quoted price. I told him the lady gave me a different price. He brought it down to $5 MORE than the quoted price. This is the second time I have decided to purchase something from this store and this is the second time they have changed the price on me during checkout time. Customers make their decision to purchase based on certain criteria, and the price is one of those criteria. Please get your pricing right. Or at least, don't be so greedy and try to squeeze out an extra $5 from the customer after you quoted them a different price and they decided to make the purchase base on your quoted price. Should have just honored the price originally quoted. I'm not concerned about the extra $5, but decided not to buy the fish based on the principle, unethical practice and poor business conduct. The man lost a sale, lost a customer (I will not be coming back to this place), and now is receiving a negative review. I would rather pay more for the same fish to another fish store with better business practices. read more

I love this place. Came here for fancy tiny shrimps, and eventually came back for Bettas. I'm not gonna lie, my Betta's are pretty good looking. One is a mermaid, another is purple, and the last is just bursting with colors! When I was there the owner was very supportive and if you're serious then she knows everything you'll need for your fish. The lady is my favorite. Although it looks locked and everything, they open for limited occupancy access. I took the kids here before Chinese New Years and got 3 of these beautiful betta's and a kit with it too. All reasonably priced. During Quarantine, a betta is a VeRY GOOD SCReEN BREAk distraction for your child. I'm serious, I keep them right next to each of their monitors with this distance learning business we live in. Anyways, the owners are nice, been here for a long time, and they're just your small mom and pop store owners. I like them, they don't talk a lot and are pretty straight forward when they do. Here's a conversation I had once that cracked me up. "Oh, I don't think I'll get the filter, seems too much work to set it up" and he says "well, if your house doesn't have a toilet, how do you feel?" LOL for real, just for that joke I nearly wanted to buy out the store. But he's got a point. You can buy the fish but you need proper filtration etc or you're just buying to grill. Anyways, that's my piece of mind for this place and I like supporting a local business that's probably older than myself with some real down to earth people! Love it! After leaving Petco due to their unhealthy fishes, we decided to drive out a bit further to Hong Kong Tropical Fish and we are so glad that we did. This place has been around for many decades and still offers clean and healthy fishes. They have many freshwater fishes to choose from, and they even sell Koi for your pond. They also have a small selection of Marine (saltwater) fishes and coral. They do have a good selection of Goldfish since many Chinese people love having Goldfish as pets. Why, you ask? Well, since the word Goldfish is pronounced "yú", it sounds the same as the word that means bounty or surplus. So Goldfishes have become a symbol for surplus and wealth, and a gift of goldfish is a blessing in the hope of good fortune. So next time you want some Goldfish or other tropical fish, swing by here. I bought a "Delhezi Bichir" (how it was labeled) here and I was so happy because the price was very reasonable. About a month and a half later, my fish has gone through a quick growth rate and displayed aggression towards its tankmates (eating my Congo tetra and albino bristlenose pleco). It clearly had a distinguishable characteristic of a different type of Polypterus specie. I made a mistake trusting the owner because it was labeled as a "Delhezi" when it was confirmed to be a "Endlicheri" specie, which grows to be over 24" doubling the size of the bichir I initially wanted. I went to talk to the female owner about this issue and she clearly didn't care, only responding with "Okay" to all the points I've made to help her and other fish hobbyist for educational purposes. I asked for a refund/trade in for credit and she said she'd only give me small amount for it. I left as soon as possible and she probably didn't even bother changing the correct specie for the bichir. You would think a store owner would try their best to help the customer interested in the hobby, but she was just flat out rude and disregarded​ my interest in correcting the mistake. I've been to this fish store many times and it's disappointing I didn't get the help I deserved. I will never return here or recommend this place to any other hobbyist. Ps. At the end of the day, I ended up trading in my bichir for store credit at The Reef in Anaheim. The owner was the complete opposite and helped me out so much and for my token of gratitude, I spent my hard earned money to purchase a Teugelsi Bichir at The Reef. read more

We bought a couple of shrimp there Sunday afternoon. Monday morning we found one of the shrimp dead. We went back with the shrimp in a baggie and the reciept to show them and see if we could get another shrimp or a refund. They said there was no guarantee on any of the livestock eventhough we had bought it less than 24 hours prior. Our water has tested fine and considering that is the only thing in the tank that died it was their shrimp. Plenty of other fish stores offer some sort of guarentee especially if it is within 24 hours. Do not buy livestock from here! Fast forward almost a week. Our perfectly healthy tank that had not had anything new introduced in months now has ich. We have lost one Rummy nose fish and it looks like at least two more are dying. Do not buy any livestock from here, they sell sick livestock! read more

When I started up my salt water fish tank, I relied on a lot of things aside from the online community. One of the big tickets in getting my tank running properly was the knowledge bank of the fish shops I visited. Of all the fish stores I've been to in the area, Hong Kong Tropical has got to be the worst when it comes to SERVICE... in my opinion they will say whatever it takes to get you to purchase the product, I say product because I feel that they think of their shop more of a asset generating cow versus a hobby-based store. When I first started (I must have been 12 years old)... I had a damsel fish in a 20 gallon tank... he was my only occupant. Being the spoiled brat that I was, the damsel wasn't enough!! I wanted a crab... So I see this hermit crab at Hong Kong Tropical... "Will this guy get along w/ my damsel?" "OF COURSE, OF COURSE! Here, I'll get a bag" The next day the crab was dead and my damsel had life threatening wounds... I came home to see Paul (the damsel) take his last sips of air before croaking. I was upset, but I didn't think to blame Hong Kong Tropical. I didn't get back into the hobby for a while... went to college and then came back and started up the hobby again... went to Hong Kong Tropical and noticed that they still had a decent selection of salt water fish... as I was looking at the fish the lady of the store walked up from behind "Which one you want?"... "Wait, I have a small tank, I don't want this guy to hide around"... "No he won't which one you want? The big one or the small one?"... at this point I thought to myself... what the heck, what's up w/ the assumptive close... is this a sales seminar? Anyways, I felt pressured... and remembering my past experience, I walked out w/o purchasing the fish... to me the art of housing sea life requires a dedication that stems far deeper than just "making a sale". My experience doesn't take away from the fact that their fish selection is large, their prices are good, and their store clean... the customer service and sales pressure is just terribly annoying. read more

The best thing about this store is the Mexican guy that works there part time. He's really nice and knows his stuff about the fish. And I noticed he didn't try to sell me bullshit products that I didn't need. They have a pretty good selection, but nothing that's hard to find like red tail catfish or jardini arowanas. The Chinese owners are kind of jackasses though. I wanted to buy a java moss plant and the lady that owns the place (the one with the fuckin' HUUUGE eyes) told me that they sell it but I have to buy a minimum of $10 worth. WTF?? If you have a $10 minimum I say the real minimum is 0 because that's how much Im spending at your store. I was never able to bargain here and was always charged tax, unlike some of the other stores in the area. Do not hire them to clean your pond. Complete rip off and not thorough. One week later and our pond is way worse than it was before they were called out. We asked them to come look at it one week later and he wanted to charge an additional $75 to come out to look at it...after charging us $600 to clean it. read more

Alas, I fell victim to their overpriced items, buying saltwater test kit for $28 (probably $12 online). We had some dim sum for lunch and since I was in the area, I decided to stop by and check it out on the way back. I remember this place was a dump when I was younger. It was dirty and smelled like typical fish store. That wet, mildew-y smell. I was surprised when I walked in and it was clean. the tropical tanks were clean but the coldwater (goldfish varieties and koi) were looking kinda dank, but I didn't see any sick fish. Looked to be some good bargains to be found. I might give this place a try if I want more fish. read more

This place has been in business for years! I used to come here all the time in 90s and I just recently got back into the aquarium game. I came here to check out their selection of fish and was happy to see they are still in business. They have the typical types of fish, nothing crazy. I did not see any saltwater fish, just tropical fish and koi. Their fish all look very healthy and the holding tanks are well maintained. Overall, the store is very clean and organized but also very small. I'd go here to get Tetras and Guppies but if youre looking for any exotic species, you'll need to go elsewhere. read more

All the tanks were meticulous and nicely arranged (you dont get that too often with shops these days). The prices were more than reasonable. I would say the only slight drawback here is the overall selection of fish but i will also say they have most all that one would need. Friendly service on top of everything. Not a problem if you have goldfish, because they will eat the snails, but if you put the plants into a discus tank as I did, you will be over-run with snails in no time flat. Went after mtb session, looking for flame angel, coral beauty and some corals. There's a lady that gave me the look and hesitant to say good morning. I bought my designer clowns here and my green mandarin a couple of months ago and it went smoothly with the old man and young guy. But this lady got some attitude, I ask for the price of the baby flame angel right away she said 60 with the mean voice. I also ask for the price of the tang right away she said 120 with a raised voice thinking I don't have $$$..I'm willing to buy the tang but after that attitude I'll go and buy it somewhere else.
