Honker Hill winery is another stop along the Illinois wine trail. This winery sits on what seems like many rolling acres. The winery is very spread out and has a confusing layout. After finding our way to the crowded bar and very much understaffed bar at that, we weren't greeted anytime soon. There was a party in an adjoining room and it seemed as if all the attention of the employees was going in that direction. Once we were greeted and our tasting started it was just a pour after pour. No information was provided on what we were drinking. I think under different circumstances, mostly a server and staff who would have been attentive this could have been a different story. However you really only have one chance to make a first impression. We did see a food truck as we left but this layout isn't inviting nor was the staff and I might not invite myself back. read more

Our favorite wines on the trail!! I know this is a little further from the other wineries, but absolutely worth the stop. We did a tasting with every wine and sangria (loved that was an option) - all soo good. It was hard to narrow down what to buy. Really enjoyed the sangria to go option as well. We have visited here many times. This is the first time since Covid. They did not disappoint. We missed the entertainment because of prior obligations but the scenery and music they play is enough entertainment for anyone. We came late so we brought our own munchies and enjoyed a bottle of wine. I discovered that sushi and Eclipse wine pairs beautifully. We savored the pickled ginger and wine together. Amazing! The owner is friendly and walks around making sure everyone is taken care of. They have misters and sun shades to keep everyone cool and comfortable. This venue is perfect for small gatherings and larger parties. Decor is tasteful with a hunting motif. The Eclipse wine is my personal favorite but all are good. Perfect for a date or family. Have been there a couple of times. It's local but still in the middle of no where. Atmosphere is good. Music is always good. But I don't think there drinks have any alcohol, this last trip. I drank a half gallon of their Sangria. I walked away feeling absolutely fine. Ran into friends and they stated they didn't think there was any wine in their drinks either. read more

We were on our way to another Winery but happened to see it and stop and are glad we did. The decor is antler lanterns and a lot of stuffed animals with in the back of bunch of heads on the wall Very Much hunting cabin Style. 6 wine tastings was $2 while cheese and crackers was $5. They have 14 different types of beer and lots of good red wine options. They also have the best sangria in Southern Illinois. Only open Thursday through Sunday with live music Saturday and Sunday and karaoke until 11 p.m. on Friday nights. Outdoor campfire around back with tables and benches overlooking a pond. read more

This is a man's winery! The decor is done in a lodge theme, with antler chandeliers and stuffed heads. I wasn't shocked given the So. IL location. This place is surely setting itself apart from the other wineries on the trail with this setting. However, outside was a large fireplace and lovely gazebo. Also, good for the guys - a TV. As we were there during the first weekend of March madness, well.... I was recently in town visiting a friend and we decided to literally take a "Sunday drive." I was driving along, and lo and behold, we come across Honker Hill, which neither of us had known was in existence before. We pulled in right after noon, and were the only ones there. Not for long! A couple of other local ladies came in and immediately asked for a mug of "hooch." Hooch?! Well, we tried it and we were hooked. Think of it like a wassail. Hot, spiced wine. Yum! We did try the other wines and they were OK. Just OK. However, I would HIGHLY recommend the sangria. Oh my! It was fantastic!!! Not a bad little place, at all. read more

This was the last winery we visited on a Wine Paring Tour of 11 wineries. We were very pleased with the pairing they provided. The ribs and apple slaw were fabulous. The owner came over to us and told us some history of the land and the winery. She was very kind and fun yet informative. This my husband and I's first stop along part of the Shawnee Wine trail. We had 6 tastings for $2. Which is a really great price. I wasn't too blown away by any of the wines. Most of them were bitter. The gentleman behind the bar seems very frazzled that 2 couple were there at once. We were a bit frustrated that there was not a wine list to be found so we just had to taste whatever they gave us. read more

They really need a better wine maker and training of the employees. I did a tasting and the young man who was pouring had know idea how to answer most of my questions.
