This bridge is super fun to cross! It is a floating bridge and drawbridge. The views from both sides are spectacular. It took us about 2 minutes to cross this 1.5 mile bridge. It was originally built in 1961, but a storm in 1979 tore critical parts of the floating bridge. It constantly has repairs to this day. The deepest part under the bridge is about 340'. Currently, there is no toll charged to cross it. Would definitely recommend if in the area.

The Hood Canal Bridge is really a great bridge to drive on! You are on there for a considerable amount of time. If you are driving you can briefly glance at the beautiful scenic view of the water and if going west and if it's clear you can see the Olympic mountains. If you are a passenger then you can really enjoy the crossing and it's just so very beautiful. The bridge does stop traffic occasionally if a large boat or ship needs to pass through it and sometimes it's closed for repairs so that is something to be mindful of. There is no place to pull off on the side of the bridge to admire the view but if you are heading east there is a turn off to your left just before the bridge. Once you make that left then make a right and it takes you down to a boat ramp. There you can get a pretty great picture of it facing east. I don't know anybody that has a boat but boating around this area is probably the best way to enjoy the bridge and the view to the west as you can get various angles as you are on the water.

I live in a very cool place! The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was blown down in the wind. The Hood Canal Bridge sank in a storm. And now the West Seattle Bridge is cracking. Engineeringly speaking the Puget Sound area is awesome. The current Hood Canal Bridge is a floating Bridge, meaning it lays on the water. It is also a draw bridge, meaning the bridge opens up when ships need to pass through the canal. Driving across the bridge is scenic and as of my last crossing on 7 May 2020 toll-free. The bridge runs NW-SE with Port Gamble, Poulsbo, and Kingston to explore on the southeast end/side of the bridge. To the northwest end/side of the bridge there is Port Ludlow, Sequim, Port Angeles, Neah Bay and the rest of the Olympic Peninsula to adventure to. On my most recent drive across the bridge (my next stop Port Angeles) I noticed a small pull-out on the left hand side of the road once off the bridge on the NW end. I found a street branching off Highway 104 and turned around, circling back to stop at the pull-out. Turns out the pull-out is for commuters and has a viewpoint with a short trail on some grass looking out at the bridge. There were also some information panels/placards about the Hood Canal, the surrounding watershed, water pollution, and what you can do to help reduce water pollutants. I drove across the bridge at sunrise and the colors and calm waters were glorious. A calming beginning to the sunlight hours of the day after.

This is an excellent bridge! It floats, and its really long. You have two lanes of traffic...one coming and one going. This makes it extra exciting! Heading West is the best! Because you get a view of the Olympics. On stormy days you're in for a real treat! Waves crash up on the sides. And if you're really lucky, ya may get to sit on the bridge for an hour while a submarine goes by! Troopers like to sit on this bridge. Some people think they're looking for speeders or waiting for submarines. I think they're just enjoying the view. I'd also like to add that it's also my favorite bridge to drive under.

What can I say? I enjoy bridges. Ok, so I'm easily amused and enjoy the little things in life. The Hood Canal Bridge is a floating bridge on SR 104 and connects the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas. This floating bridge is almost a mile and a half in length and spans 600 feet. This is the longest floating bridge the world. The view is quite spectacular on a gorgeous day. This bridge is a pontoon bridge with a retractable draw span allowing boat traffic through.

    Awesome Floating Bridge !

The Hood Canal Bridge is a floating bridge located in Washington that carries Washington State Route 104 across Hood Canal and connects the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas. At 7,869 feet (2,398 m) long, (floating portion 6,521 feet (1,988 m)) it is the longest floating bridge in the world located in a saltwater tidal basin, and the third longest floating bridge overall. First opened in 1961, it was the second concrete floating bridge constructed in Washington. Since that time, it has become a vital link for local residents, freight haulers, commuters, and recreational travelers. The convenience it provides has had a major impact on economic development, especially in eastern Jefferson County. So..... There's the little History & Information Blurb I found. But I gotta say, I've been traveling over the Hood Canal Bridge for over 20 years, Always kind of cool especially on a Beautiful Summer Day !! Ever so often they have to open the bridge for Marine Traffic (Small Ships & Submarines), Usually it is a quick process and you don't have to wait long. Not many places have floating bridges. It's just kind of nice to have some to marvel at in our great state.
