For the second year in a row we hired Larry to take us out in May for sturgeon/salmon fishing around Portland. As like last year, this year he delivered again. We only had one day with him this year (5/13) so when the salmon weren't biting, we went to hunt dinosaurs. Catch and release sturgeon. Until your lower back and biceps get sore. Good times. Big smiles. Larry cares about his clients' time and well being, but more importantly, he knows the local waters and cares about the local fisheries. He even has a couple of good jokes;)

I can't think of a better way to spend my family and I's last day in Portland than out on the water with Larry! He exceeded our expectations and gave my family an experience we'll never forget. I can't recommend Larry or Hook'em Up enough!

What an epic trip with Larry. 30 plus boats trolling for salmon. We saw one other boat land a fish. We landed two nice salmon. He then took us to non stop sturgeon fishing. Doubles and triples. Several fish over 6 ft with one well over 7. We literally had our fill and asked to go in early. Than you Larry

Larry is the best guide I've had the pleasure of fishing with on the Columbia. I keep coming back and went out three times this year. Third trip out was a foggy day in late September and I landed a beautiful silvery 20 pound Chinook within an hour of leaving the dock. The first two trips were half salmon and half sturgeon (sport only) and I caught one of the biggest sturgeon I've ever caught. My arms hurt for days - a constant reminder of how much fun I'd had out fishing. If you want to do a half and half day, be sure to ask Larry so he can gear up the boat. (This was a pleasant surprise to me on the first trip and I asked for it on the second.) It all comes down to Larry's expertise and gear. He's an experienced guide who knows the river, knows the fish, and knows how to make it happen for people. I took one of my best friends and my dad out on separate trips and we all made great memories hanging out with Larry for the day. Each time I've gone out, I've met interesting people visiting Portland. Larry is always a good steward of Portland and a friendly host. I'll be back next year for sure!

I've had such a great time fishing with Larry with Hook'em Up! His patience and knowledge has helped me learn more about how to fish the columbia river and the various techniques whether it be using the best bait, or the correct line depth and of course the best way to hook a fish, fight it and get it in the boat! I've fished for salmon and sturgeon and I'm looking forward to the next trip!! I highly recommend a guided trip with Hook'em Up Larry!!

A few other people were down on the dock casting for fish, others sat on the various rock formations sort of zoning out, and it was a real pleasure to see the children and parents sharing something they really loved. If the youngsters aren't interested in the fishing, they can come down and feed the ducks - such fun. The water is so clear you can see down to rocks and plants on the bottom and also nearest the dock flashes of the goldfish as they glide along (these goldfish eventually grow into some very large carp). There are evidently some sturgeon as well along with the rainbow trout, and also lots of ducks and other water birds (a few still with babies). Oh yes, lots of dragonflies - flashes of black and fiery orange red - add to the charm. People who fish welcome you right into their society and talk readily about their fishing experiences and how the big one got away and even why. This is a terrific family experience and for those who want to come out alone. The best time is to come early, before 7, and especially after the lake has been re-stocked, if you want to catch some fish. But like I said, it's a wonderful experience whether fish are caught or not. Give it a try. And remember if you don't catch any fish, you can hike back up to the shopping center above and get some breakfast. Not a bad day at all, in fact a damn fine one if you ask me.

However, we had the opportunity to catch and keep sturgeon only if it was between 44-50 inches; which occurs twice in a year. From beginning to start, Matt was super helpful with providing gear for me as it was my first time fishing. His boat was top of the line compared to the rest on the river that day. It had a hot water sink and very comfy chairs to sit in. He also had beers, waters on dec and had anti-nausea meds on board which was great for me since I was feeling sick. After 5 minutes, my boyfriend caught his first sturgeon that was 47 inches. And I caught one four hours later that was 45 inches. He allowed us to reel it in (which was a struggle for me, but worth it) and he took great photos after. We were the only 2 people that day to catch and keep our sturgeon. We couldn't have had a better experience and we got so lucky that day thanks to Matt! He ended up filet-ing our sturgeons and took 15 pounds of it home. It was the highlight of our trip to Portland. And we plan to come back in the spring once salmon season starts. If you're thinking about booking a trip with him, DO IT. You won't regret it!
