Went on a family vacation to Oregon. Didn't even think about going fishing. Every lake or river we drive by my son would ask if we could fish there. So I called on Friday asked if there was any spots available. Lucky they had a opening Sunday as we were leaving on Monday. Colby was awesome. We ended up catching 3 large sturgeon and a small one. I've fished with a number of guides through the years. A guide can make or break your day regardless of whether or not you catch fish. My family and I had the pleasure of fishing for salmon with Colby on the Willamette last weekend. We all have a different levels of experience fishing and Colby was able to meet us each at our own level. My husband and I showed up for a day on the boat with Larry and had very little experience fishing for coho salmon but we were very excited to learn and see what adventure was ahead! Out of the last 6 fishing excursions I've had in the past 12 months, this was unfortunately my least favorite. Larry is nice and his son is so sweet so I'm glad this is a family business. I'm not upset that we didn't catch anything as this is called fishing and not catching, but after 3 hours of not even 1 bite (Salmon fishing), I wish he would have asked us if we wanted to try Sturgeon fishing or go elsewhere to something/anything. Most captains tell us about the area or stories or again ANYTHING but just sitting there waiting for nothing to happen. Maybe it was just an off day. We left the dock at 7:15 and headed back at 1PM so it wasn't even a full day. Yet we paid $400 + 40 for a license + $20 Once on shore, there were several folks talking about how much sturgeon they caught and how much fun they had so I was just really bummed in general. Oh well - on to the next. I got other recommendations for other captains so I will definitely be back to try this again. read more

For the second year in a row we hired Larry to take us out in May for sturgeon/salmon fishing around Portland. As like last year, this year he delivered again. We only had one day with him this year (5/13) so when the salmon weren't biting, we went to hunt dinosaurs. Catch and release sturgeon. Until your lower back and biceps get sore. Good times. Larry is the best guide I've had the pleasure of fishing with on the Columbia. I keep coming back and went out three times this year. Third trip out was a foggy day in late September and I landed a beautiful silvery 20 pound Chinook within an hour of leaving the dock. The first two trips were half salmon and half sturgeon (sport only) and I caught one of the biggest sturgeon I've ever caught. My arms hurt for days - a constant reminder of how much fun I'd had out fishing. If you want to do a half and half day, be sure to ask Larry so he can gear up the boat. (This was a pleasant surprise to me on the first trip and I asked for it on the second.) It all comes down to Larry's expertise and gear. He's an experienced guide who knows the river, knows the fish, and knows how to make it happen for people. I took one of my best friends and my dad out on separate trips and we all made great memories hanging out with Larry for the day. Each time I've gone out, I've met interesting people visiting Portland. Larry is always a good steward of Portland and a friendly host. I'll be back next year for sure! read more

I was glad to have found a guide, both friendly and knowledgeable about the river area, and where the fish may be residing. Unfortunately, the fish can be scarce at times, and one of those times happened to be when we went. The conversation on the boat was relaxing for most of the time, jokes and all. Occasionally the talk delved into the stress of maintaining a boat, a business, and time for hunting. After a couple hours on the water, we headed back, and paid our fees in cash. 2 hits for the 6 on board and I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed at not bringing in a catch and leaving a little lighter in the wallet. Went out salmon fishing with Larry last week. First went trolling for salmon, with probably 50 other boats, and no bites at all. After app 3 hours in the same area and no bites, he recommended we take a bathroom break and he needed gas. Then we went sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, two of the four of us caught a fish. I understand you are not always going to have a good fishing day, but we have definitely been with guides that worked it a lot harder, especially at $500 per couple. read more

Just got back from spending the day with Captain Larry at Hook em Up Guide Services. We stumbled across him on the internet and were hooked. Definitely glad that we made the decision that we did, as we all had a blast! I booked a trip with Larry while my dad was visiting from Minnesota. My dad loves fishing. We were set up for catch and release sturgeon, and I was worried that it wouldn't be very fun. We caught so many sturgeon that I got sick of catching fish! My dad brought in a 6 foot fish and I brought in a 4 foot fish, we lost count of the amount that we caught.
