We went here for a friend's baby shower. Found out they don't take reservations and one of their friends had to show up at 7am to save 4 tables and some other people wanted them for their party! Crazy. The party was from 11-2pm, we stayed for 2 hrs. They had catered food so no need to bbq, though I did see a BBQ pit. Garbage cans available and separate men/women bathrooms and drinking fountains available. Heard there were no soap though. Overall, a good location for a party. From the City of PA website: "Location: 2901 Cowper Street, between Colorado and Loma Verde, off Oregon Expressway Description: Herbert Hoover park is a 4.2 acre neighborhood park with large open grassy areas. The park use to have a wading creek but was drained during the drought of 1976. Now there is a dry creek bed filled with boulders and pebbles. Amenities: The park includes two tennis courts, two handball courts, tennis backboard, softball field, picnic facilities with barbecues, a dog run, toddler playground with two wood and plastic climbing structures; swings and monkey bars, and a multi-purpose concrete bowl with a basketball hoop."

(This review is for the dog park) I came here with my husband and 2 dogs after we went to Mitchell Park. Just like Mitchell Park, the dog park is all one area where both big and small dogs are together. I really prefer dog parks that separate dogs by small and large. Sometimes small dogs can get really intimidated by large dogs and sometimes large dogs do not know the best way to act around dogs much smaller than them. But even though this park did not have separate sides, my dogs seemed to enjoy themselves better here than at Mitchell Park's dog park. When we came, it was in the late morning and there were only 2 small dogs there and our dogs played with them. But later on, this lady came in with 2 large dogs and 1 pretty tiny dog. The large dogs definitely played a bit too rough and I could tell my dogs were not enjoyed the time those bigger dogs were there. Anyways, I wished there were dog bags here, but there is a popper scooper in case your little pup needs to use the outdoor restroom. I like that the majority of this dog park is nice and shady and there is maybe 2 benches available for you to sit in case you don't want to stand the entire time you are here with your pup(s). The dog park is pretty clean and since I did not see too much lone poop around, I am just gonna guess that owners are probably pretty good about picking up after their dogs here. Parking here is all just street parking (but easy to do and plenty). The park itself here is on the small side, but I do like this park. It is a nice place to bring kids to play on the playground and great for your dogs. Would come back here again if we happen to be visiting Palo Alto again.

This dog park is fenced, has a water fountain, benches and tree shades. There is no separation for big / small dogs, but dogs who we met were very friendly, so no problem for my small dog.

Nice park, however came to play basketball. The basketball court is embarrassingly low quality. I took one look and left.

It's a nice little park though I just feel it's lacking a few things to make it perfect

There were 2 volunteers who were helpful explaining everything. On the way out with our 6 month old boy and 9 month old girl we stopped at the playground near the parking (which was adequate given it was a Friday afternoon). They had a wonderful time swinging on the swings. There were a full set of play things available for slightly older children. Everything was as clean as could be expected. We had a very nice day at the park.

What I like: Free entry, huge free parking lot, and bathrooms. You can keep it simple with a walk or bike ride on the trails, or make it more of an activity day with the lake. The lake is manmade and they have a boathouse where you can rent equipment. Sailing, paddle boating, that kind of vibe. I've also seen the boathouse area used for group events, so it's good for a casual outing or even something organized. A few practical notes: It's mostly flat, which is great, but there's very little shade, so if it's sunny bring water and plan accordingly. Weekends can get crowded, especially when the weather is good. Overall, it's a clean, convenient park with enough variety that you can keep coming back and not get bored.

Unfortunately, the Rengstorff House just closed when we arrived. We were able to walk around and check out the lake and some of the other areas though.
