Bannister is my home town. It's a tiny village that oddly supported two bars, two churches, and two…read morerather large reception halls for a long time. It lost its grocery store a long time ago. Now it's down a reception hall now, but the churches are stable. While the bars, both of them, go up and down with the economy and interest. This bar has been remodeled and opened up. They run karaoke some nights, and when I was here during Lent, they served a huge crowd fish dinners on a Friday night. Even though we arrived a little late, there were only a couple of tables left. It was filled with regulars and groups of folks that travel around checking out Lenten Fish Fry nights. Except for the kids, everyone in our fairly large group had fish. It was available fried or baked, with a choice of potato, and a salad bar. The salad bar is exactly like what you find at many small town places. Several mayonnaise dressed salads, some lettuce from a bag, a few toppings, and dressing, particularly ranch. It was clean and fairly fresh -- from such a crowd. The dinners were all good and arrived fairly quickly, though they weren't particularly interesting. This is good, solid food for the same kind of people. The beer is cold. And the drinks are cheap. There are babies in the bar. Some nights there are still bar fights, and some nights someone drives home a local drunk, so no one has to worry. Tipsy bridesmaids and groomsmen will find their way down to ease the pain (and get lost for awhile) when the reception at the hall down the street is too hot. I love this bar.

I stopped by here two Saturdays ago with my wife and twins for lunch. We were planning on visiting…read morePere Marquette 1225 that afternoon and so I fired up Yelp to find a place to eat in Owosso. Barrister Brewing Company fit that bill perfectly by combining both food and beverages. We entered from the West Main Street entrance and found a pretty big space with plenty of tables for seating and then a large bar. There was a corner with games and things as well as an area with law-themed items. The ceiling was black and gave off an industrial type of vibe. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I went with a flight here. At Barrister Brewing, that consisted of five beers and they came out in what looked like a book. For my beers I chose the Sour Deposition (raspberry Berliner weisse), a MarBERRY vs MADISON (blueberry wheat), Kastysis Baltic Porter, Amicus Crunchiae Peanut Butter Porter, and finally the Alibi IPA (Midwestern IPA). The first beer I tried was the Sour Deposition, which had a nice tart flavor with a good taste of raspberries right through the finish. Second was the blueberry wheat, which had carbonation up front before the blueberry hit, and it finished with a taste of the wheat. Next was the Baltic porter, which had some sweetness from start to finish with a nice hit of darker malts right in the middle for added flavor. After that was the peanut butter porter, which had a mild peanut smell with sweetness from start to finish and an almost creamy mouthfeel in the middle. Last but certainly not least was the Alibi IPA, which had a deep and hoppy flavor right out of the gate that persisted through the finish, leaving no doubt that this was an IPA. Out of the bunch, the peanut butter porter was easily my favorite, followed by the Sour Deposition. After looking over the food menu, I ultimately decided on the mac and cheese and added the smoked chicken for an upcharge. Then I was able to choose between BBQ sauces and went with the Carolina rather than the traditional sweet and spicy. I was also surprised when given a choice of sides with the mac and cheese and doubled up on my carbs with fries. My mac and cheese had plenty of cheese with a good flavor. I don't know that I could have told you it was beer cheese if the menu hadn't mentioned it. The chicken was nice and smoky, while the Carolina BBQ sauce was nice and tangy. The fries may have been the best part of my meal, though. The menu noted that they were a special variant from Farmer Ed's that had a higher sugar content and browned more easily. I found them to be perfectly crispy on the outside while super soft on the inside. That little extra bit of sweetness was noticeable too, and I think these were the best fries that I have had in a really long time. My son ended up eating the mac and cheese and fries while my daughter ate a cheese toastie. Both of our kids were super happy with their food, so we ordered my daughter a second cheese toastie and a second order of fries for them to split as well. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. My wife and I both appreciated the drinks, and our whole family enjoyed the food here.

We were so excited to see a microbrewery in Owosso! We LOVED the law theme of this brewery,…read moreincluding the flights, which come in "law books". Flights are per pour, which is also nice! The servers were amazing and kind! We liked the cheesy fries okay (it's half eaten in the picture- oops!) although there were a few REALLY salty bites. The beer was okay- as a new place, they're definitely still working on flavor profiles. Super excited to see where they go from here though! This has the potential to be an amazing spot.

I've been there twice now…read more First night (Saturday) there was very loud, derogatory rap music playing. Families with kids eat there, they should not have to hear stuff like that. It was very hard to communicate with the server due to the noise. The actual menu is a lot smaller then what is shown on their website. Especially fish options. I had grouper tenders which were small and mostly breading. Not worth it. Fries were excellent. Tartar sauce appeared to be pure mayo, no sign of relish or lemon at all. Ketchup, mustard, and salt were the only condiments on the table, not sure if anything else was available, like cider vinegar or even pepper. It's a pub, you would think all that stuff to be automatic. Second night (9 pm Sunday) I tried to go elsewhere because of my previous night's experience, but not many other options. Most of Alma was already closed. Tonight there was no music playing, so I was able to have a conversation. I had the olive burger with steak fries, my son had boneless wings with Thai sauce and waffle fries. Everything was very good, and a good value for the money. I guess I need a third night to be a tie-breaker.
