This review is for HopeWay, Katy, the director of admissions at HopeWay, and the "human resources" department. I applied for the residential treatment program at HopeWay many months ago. I was interviewed and accepted into the program. Two days after being accepted, I received a phone call from Katy, who I've never spoken to before, saying that I was now not being accepted due an underlying mental illness, OCD. I called HopeWay back a few months later and spoke to Dan, who is kind and genuine. I told him that things had changed since we last spoke. I told him I was now seeing a new OCD psychologist and taking new medication for OCD, however, it was still being suggested to me that I seek residential treatment because of my declining mental health. I was accepted again back into HopeWay, and had an admissions date scheduled. Unfortunately, due to some issues I was experiencing in my household and a blizzard we had a week later, I needed to reschedule my admissions date. Dan was more than accommodating with that. When I called Dan to reschedule an admissions date again, he was out sick. He then was on vacation. In his absence, I was forced to discuss everything with Katy. Without any hesitation, she denied me treatment at HopeWay again. I begged and cried for her to reconsider, but she didn't care. She said it was "her decision". Technically, the psychiatrist you see at your intake appointment is the ONLY ONE that makes the decision if a patient can be accepted into the program or not. Not Katy. The next day, I reached back out, just so I could understand her decision. I left her numerous voicemails and emails, none of which she had the decency to even respond to. I even reached out to their "human resources" department for assistance. After leaving a few messages at this department, and not receiving a call back, I started to get the feeling that my calls were being screened. Finally, one time, Katy did answer the phone when I tried calling. She was very harsh and constantly told me that I needed to seek OCD treatment instead and gave me referrals of places to go to. Most of these facilities have a waitlist of 3 to 4 months. Katy told me that she "wasn't responsible for any other treatment centers waitlists". I thought that was a real nice to say to someone who is suffering as much as I am. Instead of being compassionate, Katy told me that "I should've applied to these other facilities sooner, because by now I would've already been a patient at one of them". I am in crisis and in desperate need of residential treatment for structure and stability, but it turns out, I was only being annoying to her and she just wanted nothing to do with me. She couldn't make that any clearer. I even had my relatives and doctors leave voicemails and emails for the admissions department. Katy clearly stated to me that any future communications sent there on my behalf would be discarded, which I thought was very unprofessional. I then received an email from their chief compliance officer. It was a complaint against me. It was a standard letter that stated that I cease all communication with HopeWay and to not call them anymore. I didn't want to believe that my calls were being screened and counted, but that's exactly what was happening. I never expected a mental health facility to do something like this. The way Katy treated me, is the most unethical I have ever been treated when it comes to behavioral health. She even was able to get the "human resources" department to not return my messages. This is the department I needed to reach out to see if we could come up with a solution, but apparently she was able to convince the office and the people that work there to not answer my phone calls. My current psychiatrist was shocked by the way I was treated. She said a psychiatric institution should have more tolerance when people are seeking help. The lack of compassion and care that I experienced with HopeWay was depressing and I am truly disappointed. I received NoHope from HopeWay. Thanks for your time to read my review. read more

I attended IOP at HopeWay in December 2024 while struggling with unmanaged chronic pain and severe trauma. I told them I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to sit in the chair because my back hurts so bad and they told me it would be no problem to just get some pillows and sit quietly in the back however I needed to. I see now that it really was just like collecting tuition at a time when the body count was low due to the holidays. Because I started and they were like welcome-no problem- and then I voiced my issues about loose structure feeling like it's day camp. With young counselors, offering to start late and end early. I found this destabilizing and in effective and despairing. I asked for structured, therapeutic support, but what I experienced was programming that consistently started late, ended early, and was often framed as "giving us a break." The in-between time was loosely structured or unclear, which left me feeling more destabilized than supported. At that point it was the new year and the body count was back up and they said they didn't know if they could accommodate me with my chronic pain that I should move to the inpatient. The thing is impatient, receive the same care from the same therapist in the same building. The only difference is they sleep there and they get their medication managed so when I wasn't manageable enough for them and I wasn't needed because body count had increased. They let me know that that was really my only option if I wanted Care there. It was very stressful. I would not send anyone there. Additionally, I know someone who attended also and shortly after leaving was not able to stay on the Earth any longer. It's not necessarily a reflection of them. It's just odd that I only know of one other person who went there, and we both had experiences that left us feeling similar. HopeWay may provide safe supervision during a crisis, but if you are looking for intentional, trauma-informed, and neurodivergence-aware therapy, the program as I experienced it lacked the consistency and depth needed for true healing. read more

Helped me get out of a bad time in my life - the overwhelming majority of staff are amazing, the food is good and the rooms are comfortable. I hope I never have to return, but it's good knowing there's a good mental health facility in my city. read more

I was denied access to their residential mental health treatment program after disclosing that I live with chronic incontinence--a medically managed condition that I handle independently and hygienically. I explained clearly that I do not require additional medical support for this condition. I also offered to provide a physician's note confirming that I manage my needs fully and discreetly and that the condition poses no safety risk or undue burden. Despite this, I was informed that the facility has a blanket policy of not accepting individuals with fecal incontinence and that I would be refused admission. This policy was applied without any individualized assessment of my situation, in violation of ADA standards. As a result, I was denied access to mental health care at a critical time in my life. This has had a significant negative impact on my emotional well-being and recovery. My entire treatment team--including my psychiatrist and two therapists--had independently recommended this program as a vital next step in my care. I believe this denial is discriminatory under the ADA, which prohibits public accommodations from excluding individuals based on disability unless a direct threat or undue burden can be shown through individualized assessment--which, in my case, was not done. read more

My son received an admission letter with an arrival date on December 26. We left our family and drove 7 1/2 hour in torrential rain from Birmingham AL to Charlotte on Christmas Day so my son could be admitted at 9:30 am on December 26. We arrived at HopeWay only to be told we were scheduled for December 27... oops! HopeWay made a scheduling error-- No biggie, right?--oh, wait... they can take him. So he gets the lab work done, meets one on one with an admissions person who is supposed to be a trained psychiatrist -- after the initial one on one meeting I am invited in and the admissions director tells us that since my son has an aversion to art therapy and says he doesn't want to do it that he is not a good fit-- What?-- then she added he is unwilling-- Unwilling? Ŵe crossed four state lines to get there, he rolled his suitcase into the facility, he showed up. This admissions person did zero to ease my son's trepidation about art therapy. Then she called in head of admissions who entered the room angry, no concern, no empathy, zero compassion. HOPEWay admission department lacks compassion. This would probably be a four star except for a certain even that happened. I enjoyed and benefited from the stay there for the most part. The variety of therapies that is offered here and the ability to connect with all the people there too is a huge plus for me. The downside for this place was that I sent to be assessed since I was having suicidal thoughts. That involves having me go to a local psych ward and see a doctor there. I did and the doctor assessed that I stable. Dr. Kuntz of Hopeway insisted otherwise and shortly after she discharged me from Hopeway while I was at the psych ward. So Hopeway left me stranded and homeless at the psych ward which is an odd thing to do if they think I am unstable. read more

THE BEST PLACE EVER I stayed at hopeway in Charlotte for about 43 days longest my insurance would let me stay and it saved my life and help me so much at the time. The NURSES were wonderful won't names since they all were. The facility and campus and brand new feel like and beautiful landscaping. You have your own private room and bath. Even with covid we made and tried to make it more interesting. Im from wilmington and my dr was Dr peck and my therapist was Corey. I am so thankful for all the staff so supportive, smiling, Helping and happy to be there. The food was amazing also and then there is a snack bar 3 Times a days. Full size basketball gym. Got a smaller gym to work out not to bad. Nice little trail. Bobby at horticulture is amazing Art is amazing. Thank to all at Hopeway for helping me get the help I needed back in May-June 2020. On June 6, I entered the residential treatment program at HopeWay to help get my depression and anxiety under control. Changes in medication and therapy with my existing therapist and psychiatrist no longer offered relief. I've dealt with depression for over twenty years, but I was at a point where I didn't care if I woke up the next morning even though I had absolutely everything to live for. On the outside to many, I had it all with few people knowing the struggles I faced daily. Making the decision to seek residential treatment was one of the most difficult things I've ever done. After scouring the internet and doing my homework, I settled on HopeWay. I live in Charlotte which made HopeWay even more attractive. The moment I walked into the door, I felt welcomed by everyone I came into contact with. After the tour of the stunning facility and learning details of their programs, I made the decision to enter treatment the next week. All of the doctors, therapists, nurses, and techs take their jobs very seriously and are filled with compassion. They each seem to have a personal connection with every client in treatment. Even though I didn't work individually with all of them, they still knew specifics about my journey due to a weekly treatment team meeting involving everyone. I was more than a number and more than a medical file. Every team member I encountered offered many words of encouragement and unwavering support. The adjunctive therapy sessions including yoga, music, health and wellness/cooking, horticulture, recreation therapy and art are top-notch. The kitchen, gym and art studio are very nice. All of the therapists are passionate about their field. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to teach and share is infectious. After spending 30 days in residential, I am currently in Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which is three days per week from 9-12:00. The same staff and therapists are involved in all programs so I am continuing to work with the same team which, in itself, is amazing. I've connected with other clients in the program who are made up of a lifetime of experiences all eager to share and offer support. Life is full of detours. I never expected my journey to include a residential treatment plan for mental illness. But, while HopeWay was unexpected, it has been and will continue to be a life changing event for me and my family. read more

I have struggled with Anxiety and Depression for over twenty years and thought I had it "under control" until I had an episode that brought me to an incredibly dark place in my life. I am two weeks into the Partial Hospitalization Program and it has already changed my life. The facility is "top notch" and the people are amazing. pre It is obvious that this is a "calling" for them and not just a job. If you have the insurance coverage and short term disability I highly recommend that you start off with the five day per week partial hospitalization program. I found that DAILY reinforcement with the support of the group helped me to get over the "hump". My only caveat is that you stay away from yoga if you have never done it, are over 40 and have back issues. I was too aggressive and tweaked an old back injury that caused me to miss a day. While the care is neutral on the subject of religion they are also very respectful of the beliefs of their patients and insist on the same out of the group members. I am an evangelical christian in a group with several atheists and at least one Buddhist and we all welcomed and encouraged each other. Finally, everyone who comes here as mental issues of one type or another and some folks will not do as well as others because they are not in a place mentally where they can relax and trust the staff and their groups. Two stars because my family member's initial experience- in outpatient treatment- was positive. However, the admissions person for inpatient made promises for three weeks (regarding facility living conditions) that were retracted on the day of admission. Bait and switch while my family member was in serious jeopardy. Unprofessional and unethical. No response to all requests to report/discuss with anyone at all. Extremely disappointing. read more

This review is not about the quality of care Hopeway provides. Hopeway assured us that insurance would cover this and seemed to pre-approve us properly. Then once my child was ready to seek in-house treatment, we were told we had to pay in full up front and then insurance would be applied later etc. By the time you get to the point that you are signing these papers, you are already stressed about your family member and trust Hopeway. Who's going to say "hold on, I thought you already pre-approved this"? Instead, you pay up front and then find out later that the insurance company denies your claim. Not some fly by night insurance company, but Blue Cross Blue Shield. After one full year of appealing and fighting the claim denial (via my employer's insurance advocate), we have given up. The claim was denied, and all costs were out of pocket. We would have been satisfied if the costs had just counted toward our deductible, but NOPE. Claim denied, via BCBS. Appeals denied, Period. End of story. My child was able to voluntarily withdraw at any time from the program and did so after one week. I can't say if the program works, but I know how the payment works. My advice: ask questions and present this scenario to them when they put the papers in front of you to sign. read more

I was a patient at Hopeway a year ago. Upon arrival I was pleasantly greeted by all the BHT's and staff who already knew my name. They had all been briefed prior to my admission. I felt taken care of, and safe immediately. I have been to several state funded behavioral health facilities, so my expectations weren't so high. But at Hopeway, I wasn't treated like a criminal, I was treated like a human being who has been begging for good care since I was a child. They offer several different types of group therapy even integrative therapy, like yoga, art, music, even equine therapy. The facility is kept clean and the staff always makes sure you are comfortable. I learned more here about myself than I ever have under different care. The therapists have meetings about all the patients and discuss treatment plans. The doctors are fantastic, and extremely competent in their profession. Hopeway saved my life for good. P.S. the description of Hopeway on Yelp is wrong. This is not a rehab facility that focuses on addiction. Although they do offer a substance abuse group, and transport addicts to recommended N.A. and A.A. meetings, Hopeway focuses mainly on behavioral health. read more

I really needed help with my mental state. Hopeway REALLY helped me. I'd recommend it to anyone seeking residential help or PHP/IOP. I was scared because I was coming from Texas and didn't know what to expect. Everyone was nice and it felt like having a second family who really understood you and was there for you. The food wasn't that great but the cooks are awesome people. Chuck and Dana are so sweet. I really liked yoga, art therapy, drumming, nutrition kitchen, horticulture and process group. I wish it was located in Texas so bad. I miss Hopeway:( If I had to do residential again I would definitely go back to Hopeway. Thank you for giving me my life back Hopeway! read more

I spent a month in the partial hospitalization. I had been struggling with depression, anxiety, and social isolation for my entire adult life (10 years) up to when I started at Hopeway and as of writing this it has been a year since I started there. I can't even describe how much my life has improved. I didn't realize it was possible for me to think and feel like a "normal" person and not feel completely separate from everybody else. I did feel like everyone there was very competent but beyond that, I got a genuine sense of empathy from the therapists and my psychiatrist Dr. Mara. read more

This was my second time coming to hopeway for residential treatment. Unfortunately it was a very disappointing and frustrating return. I was there for 5 weeks, however the last 3 of them were spent by my treatment team sorting out another facility to send me to for an eating disorder. I received next to no individual therapy actually addressing my mental health, which is a much more pressing problem currently than my co occurring eating disorder which I have been struggling with--mainly due to my loss of appetite from my medication and depression. My treatment team did not listen to me or believe me, even as I ate more healthily and started gaining weight. I did not come to Hopeway struggling primarily with my anorexia; what I needed help with was my major depression, borderline personality disorder, anxiety, & alcohol abuse. I'm not leaving feeling as if I've been remotely treated for any of my chronic and recurring mental illnesses. My psychiatrist also refused to make changes to my medication based solely on my weight. Now, my weight has been slightly underweight, but not dangerously low on any account. Hopeway told me they were doing a "disservice" having me here since they couldn't provide adequate support for my eating disorder (which I am RECOVERING from). Within the 3 weeks over the holidays that they spent their entire focus on finding another treatment facility for me, I actually improved majorly with my eating. All meals, a snack every night. Yet they still insisted on another treatment center. Never have I felt so unheard in a treatment facility. I lost my trust in my treatment team due to them refusing to listen. The only thing that had been even a little helpful during my 5 weeks was talking with the other patients, not with my therapist or psychiatrist. I finally decided I was not going to go to an eating disorder treatment facility because I am not in a place where I have been before to where I actually need that higher level of care. I am now having to leave treatment because the only reason I have gotten to stay this long was so they could arrange my transfer. This is unacceptable in a mental health treatment center, when they know that a patient has dual diagnoses, but won't believe straight from their mouth what they most need support for. My last two weeks at hopeway I didn't have a single full therapy session, merely check ins to update me on which treatment centers they had contacted. This care felt very neglectful and unprofessional. I didn't expect to be leaving Hopeway feeling as if I'd be getting more support in returning to outpatient therapy than what I received while in residential. read more

I asked many times to speak to the CEO about this... When I first came to Hopeway I was told there would be "plenty" of vegan food for me to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and when I got to Hopeway they tried to feed me salad for every meal. I do not know why Morgan lied to my mom and me. That should have been a clue of my future treatment here. Once I met with my doctor, Dr. Jason Peck, he felt the need to ask me the same question multiple times ( will you go to group; answer: yes) during our meeting. I told him this was very annoying and he continued. He did not care that I did not want to work with my old doctor who over medicated me. He asked me multiple times about contacting my doctor as well, after I said no- and set a boundary. I do not need a doctor to act like I can't understand English and/or am stupid. I have the right to not want a doctor on my treatment team (ex doctor) and asking me many time is not going to change my answer. This is a power move on his part. My doctor decided to keep me on lithium (bipolar) even though I have been on it for over a year and it has not worked for me. He did not check my lithium level before putting me on lithium or even during. I took the lithium and had a side effect that landed me in the ER. Hopeway did not transport me. I had to pay out of pocket ( ON TOP OF 26,000 DOLLARS) After speaking to my therapist at hopeway about my dislike for my doctor and how he trigged my PSTD she called a group meeting where he decided to bring up my triggering PTSD three times using details--after the second time I asked him to stop being it up. Then he felt the need to laugh and say "lots of people have dark hair and are 5'11". A doctor-- or anyone should not belittle your trauma. They should not make it seem silly. I had a panic attack and was told to simply go back to group. They do not care. They told me very coldly that I could not switch doctors. When I had my panic attack staff went around telling people I was "fine and she just likes crying". They did nothing to help. The art therapist brought up the same topic causally saying " I don't know you well. But I was reading in your chart..." which I found very unprofessional. She has also shared personal information about me in group. They (staff) likes to focus on my "negative" qualities and made me sign a contact saying I would resist doing things I tend to do while manic. They didn't not put me on the right medicine so it is silly they think signing a contact will stop me from being bipolar. I asked them who felt I was this way and Dr. Mara said " if I had to guess, EVERYONE". I asked does everyone hate me? He said yes. There is no such thing as everyone. I have asked for over two weeks to be in my treatment team meeting and was ignored. Yesterday my therapist said I "never" asked her this. It's in writing that I did. Hopeway claims that they "pride ourselves on the quality of care and service offered by our professional staff", this is laughable. When I wrote a complaint I was told by Dr. Peck "I'm sorry you feel that way" which is not an apology, it's a non apology apology. Nothing changed. Hopeway has not been "client-focused", "respectful" nor "supportive" towards me. Look for Hope elsewhere. read more
