I'm a bit torn about Hopey &Co since it moved to a new location. Please note that the location on South French Broad is closed. I have submitted a request to Yelp, asking that they update it to the new location on 800 Fairview Road, which is inside a shopping center. Pros: bigger space means more discounted products! We always look for specialty snacks, boxed non-perishable food items like pasta or rice, dairy items like yogurt, healthy items like vitamins, and random stuff in the frozen section to find the best deals. As long as you don't come here for produce and regular grocery items, you can really leave with awesome deals. Cons: the new location, while bigger, doesn't have the same charm as the old location on S French Broad Ave. I also think that they have less deals on products than before, but I could be making that up. All and all, I'll still go whenever I'm in town visiting, but it's not on my priority list like before read more

I have heard about this grocery + store for several years. Saw it off Sweeten Creek and then it disappeared. Now in the shopping center at River Ridge. One can find many bargains on food and supplies. Need to have a good understanding of what "sell by", "use by" and now "enjoy by" expiration dates mean! This store has a big footprint with plenty of shelving, some are nearly empty. Wine and beer selection as well. There is a sign that indicates returns up to 30 days should the item be bad. Some food items are individual and other are in pallets. The business model appears to be nearly out of date and excess merchandise (pallets). A lot of fresh and tasty items can be had for under $2. Today I scored Suddenly Salad and Hamburger Helper for a buck each ;) and also stocked up on 1 to 2 dollar boxes/bags of cookies and chips for the pantry. Saved a TON on school/work snacks. Best place to shop for deals although the produce is a little expensive. The Walnut Creek brand is really awesome too. Filled up a huge box with groceries for only 50 bucks! Love this store. The main reason I went here was that it was a sort-of-supermarket within walking distance of our hotel. The place is a no-frills food co-op. They appear to specialize in health foods and related products. They are not huge, so they have a reduced selection of any given type of product. The above is not intended as criticism, just as a description. The point being: do not come here expecting a standard Kroger / Publix type experience. That is not what this market is trying to be. It is probably adequately stocked with at least one type of whatever item you are looking for, but you may need to be somewhat flexible. There also appeared to be an adjoining bar-type area, but I'm not sure what was up with that (other than beer-bars are so common in Asheville that they figured they should just include one here too?) read more

Really like Hopey for ice cream, pastas, frozen items I can stock up on, jarred things come and go.... right now there's the best jam in the world, must have been a pallet of the stuff come in, chips,though their options are much diminished since their move......dry goods an OK buy like rice crackers/dried corn/seeds, charcoal usually a pretty good deal if you don't mind broken and taped bags, break a great deal, canned Mexican items and general misc items you don't expect, much of the time. I like them. I want them to remain a healthy fixture in Asheville. I was sorry to see the 2 sister stores, closer to me, fold. read more

My experience is pretty incomplete being that I was a.) dealing with Allegiant Airlines customer service, b.) trying to stop by the house that had the few things I still had from my flight to Asheville to pick up, and c.) wondering how my trip had gone sideways since the night before. It was a jarring time when I Lyfted over to Hopey & Co that happened to be down the street from the house in question. I figured I would stop in, grab a coffee, maybe something to eat. It was an alright stop, good if you live by as a local and need some groceries or a morning pick-me-up. But it wasn't much more than a typical grocery store that had a closed since it was 11 in the morning. I went to the dining part of the store. It does have a cool, little esthetic and staff that left me to my business upon ordering a large espresso. Honestly, the review is more because I was in a bad mood, in a bad place, trying to resolve multiple situations. That's not the fault of Hopey's but I wasn't feeling the place at the time. If I ever return, I'll try some of the food, or if I need groceries at wherever else I was staying. read more

A World market here in Asheville . Their business model is this - you have to visit often because the the super unusual items are discovered an vanish. It's one Hang to have overpriced produce that is going bad and other expired foods that you charge full price for. Fri madly, service, variety and a great spot for a sandwich and super smooth ESPRESSO! What Hopey lacks in ambiance it makes up for in so many other ways! Deli sandwiches, brew bar, wine shop, discount groceries and meats. Worth a check out for sure. Seriously on of the best espressos I've had around here. They grind is smooth and they keep their machine super clean. Just a couple secrets to a great coffee. Parking in front (2 hour) or around the corner and down behind/under the building (free and unlimited). Only on half star off for ambiance .. but hey .. no biggie. Wow! You can find some real bargains here if you come often, look deep and read expiration dates! I found some organic candy bars for .99 which is better than even sale prices at bigger natural markets. Granted they didn't have all the flavors but if you're willing to be happy with selection at hand you can find yourself VERY happy. They have good deals on kombucha and also yogurt. The chips are deeply discounted too. Some things i got excited about finding had expired over a month. The selection is always different so if i'm grocery shopping i make this my first stop and then fill in at the other more consistent stores. There have always been boxes available as well. It's like a TJ Maxx or Marshal's for groceries. You can get a great deal on all sorts of fresh, frozen and packaged food but be judicious and always check the expiration date. I've bought plenty of technically expired things that were still totally fine for consumption. Yay for reducing food waste! My new obsession is the cafe area. Greta is super friendly and makes a great smoothie AND even puts it in my mason as requested jar so I don't waste plastic. What we found: -Unfriendly staff, nobody greeted us when we entered the store and as we browsed the aisles. -The food is close or out of date which is fine with us, however the prices are at or barely below supermarket prices. -Beer selection is good, prices are the same as anywhere else. this place. Prefer Black Mountain because it is bigger and they have more stuff but this one is closer. I always find things I wasn't looking for and good quality products. Last time I was there I got 4# of ranier cherries for $12, that's pretty incredible. If you're a snack person and like to keep it GMO free and with better ingredients, this is where to go! Any starving college students that are struggling have to come by here! They also have local products which is very cool. Oh! I love Hopey & Co, it's in my regular grocery store line up now. You can't go there with super specific needs, but they always have an ever changing selection of overstocks from other stores. I always buy their trail mixes (they have mint filled chocolate things that are amazing) and check out their meat selection. I also don't mind "a couple days old" bread so I pick that up regularly, but it's because of their every changing selection & prices that I check it out. Highly recommend checking out if you are in the area! You can park across the street for free after 5:30pm as well! read more

Love Hopey. They have a grocery store, salad bar, smoothie/Cafe/coffee bar, and a tap room. Smoothies and juices are the cheapest in town with great options for ingredients. You'll pay under $4 for breakfast, and under $10 for two meals if you're on the go all day. Their staff is nice, helpful and pretty relaxed, but attentive. Their managers are consistent and acknowledge customers. I have learned from shopping there for a few years that there are some products they'll always carry and other products they may never have again. With that being said, if you have a recipe you need ingredients for, I wouldn't recommend coming here first because otherwise you'll get frustrated trying to find all the things. They always have most of the staples. They have a small selection of produce. Tons of short dated snacks and artisan stuff. Just eat em fast! read more

A great place to shop for any dry goods, sauces, toiletries, etc. They also have an amazing new beer and wine section with staff who are educated about the selection available. There is also a great meet and cheese selection as well as a juice and sandwiches bar. A serious upgrade. I went back to Hopey after about a year-long absence, and I was just saddened by what I found. All of the interesting/cheap/recently expired stuff was replaced with a lackluster assortment of house brand bulk items in inconvenient packaging. Something about the whole experience just felt "off". Prices were high--almost like shopping at a "nice" place, and for what? Flickering tube lights, Muzak slow jams, and no fun. I take back everything I said about this place being awesome. It's perfectly good for ducking in and buying a bag full of bulk cornstarch, but that's about as far as I'm willing to go today. read more

Hopey & Co (formerly known as Amazing Savings) has become one of my favorite places to shop. It's not on my weekly shopping route, but I do like to stop by at least once or twice a month to see what sort of interesting treats they have to offer. I'm trying to figure out how to best describe the wonderful world that Hopey & Co is. It's essentially a discount food store. They get items that other stores have discontinued, or may expire sooner than they would sell. That being said, there's still class and choice in what they offer, which gives the place almost a health store vibe. Yesterday I walked in, grabbed three containers of spices for $2 a pop, some random sauces including some delightful tomato chutney, a six-pack of beer, and a bottle of champagne (from Champagne, not sparkling wine). When I got to the register and was told my total I wanted to give everyone else in line a high five. This place is completely underrated, and may have a stigma to battle against. Til everyone else catches on I am more than happy to take complete advantage of this righteous spot. read more

Hopey & Co is bound to become one of my favorite places to shop. I stopped in for the first time last week on a whim and came out with a handful of things I didn't know I needed. Hopey & Co can be classified as a discounted grocery store but it's so much more interesting than that. You won't find gluten free sweet potato chips for $1.99 at a Dollar General. They get items from other grocery stores that they no longer stock or perhaps the sell by date is getting too close to the present. That's how they get their discount and how you get to pay great prices for toffee and chocolate covered pretzels, or whatever you buy for dinner. Yes you might see something with a best buy date and realize that date is tomorrow, but guess what? It's probably going to last past tomorrow. So check the dates and your produce just like you probably do at Harris Teeter, and come and explore the wonder that is Hopey & Co. read more

I have been a LONG time shopper at all 3 locations. I have watched the prices go up and the quality NOT go up. If I am going to buy items near their expiration date I expect the product to be at a close out price. If I want to pay $5 for peanut butter, I will get it with a fresh date! The produce is as expensive or more than Ingles and the quality is poor. I got some Wasabi Green Tea oil at Go-Grocery for $1.00. At Hopey it was $3. The Black Mountain Hopey store had Lundburg Organic sushi rice for $1.99 / LB and at the S French Broad location it was $2.99. I still go there, but I buy a LOT less! If they want to keep their customer base they need to be a LOT less greedy and pay more attention to quality. There are other discount stores that have better prices. GO-Grocery, Dickys, U-Can-Save (in Clyde), that have much better pricing. read more

It was okay. I was pretty excited to find a section devoted to chips of all kinds at awesome prices. I purchased a couple of bags of chips and some local made hummus. I told others about my experience only to be told to check the expiration date on the chips. So, I did. Both bags had expired a week prior. I tried chips from both and one was awful and tasted like cardboard. The other bag tasted stale and not that good. The hummus was fresh and totally on point. I saw no signs that explained their policy of selling expired items and only finding out after I made a purchase really turned me off the whole store. Doubt I'll go back. read more

One star instead of zero just because of the friendliness of the staff. We've been going here (this SFB location) for close to two years, and while they started out having pretty good deals across the board, the only things worth looking for anymore seem to be bread, condiments and chips. The past month, I've walked in there and back out with my two kids three times in a row completely empty-handed, because they had nothing that was a good deal compared to big-box prices. Let me give you a couple of examples: Expired milk for barely-less-than Ingles-when-fresh prices -- which fortunately I've been able to talk the cashier down on every time... overstocked Bussetto-brand salami at barely-less-than-normal price at Ingles... regular (=same as big stores) price on a family-size sack of smashed toilet paper. WTF? And the produce seems to get less impressive, and more expensive, every week... one week they had a display advertising 'local apples,' but when I looked more closely, about 95% of the bags were simply packaged in the southeast (instead of being grown there). What is happening, H&C bigwigs? These price hikes of yours, on what should be discounted goods, don't match the pace of inflation. Employees have told me that personally they believe that this store and the Sweeten Creek store don't intelligently (or cooperatively) set prices, when they get a pallet of overstocked or near-expired XXX in. Makes sense as an explanation to me. That or, we should just believe that the ownership thinks they can continue to gouge the base clientelle -- on the basis of their name (brand impact will soon fade, trust me) or because they are trying to expand and be a deli+larder+pizza place. Or both, doesn't matter to me... all I know is I'm increasingly turned off as a consumer who thought they know what the store offered to potential buyers. Or final possibility -- the liquidators you buy from are getting greedier, and making you pay close-to-full price for almost expired goods. if that is the case, please advertise it clearly to all of us, so we can at least properly eulogize what we once had! In closing, please just bring back the deals. I really don't want to walk around with my kids (after picking them up from school + ending a tough day at work) and spend a full 30 minutes or more looking for deals, yet walk out with nothing... =( read more

I just visited the Sweeten Creek location yesterday after not having gone to Amazing Savings for a while. I was surprised that the prices have risen significantly. I got a reasonable deal on some cheese but that's about it. I stopped by Ingles after my visit here to pick up some things that A.S. didn't have, and was a little dismayed that most Ingles prices were the same or better. Same for the recent sale circular from Earthfare. Too bad, I really enjoyed shopping there. read more

Prices were nothing special, a bit on the steep side, and much of the produce was subpar yet full price or above. Okay, that's fine. What's not is how the cashier treated us when we were checking out. We had brought in a glass jar to fill with peanut butter and when he went to weigh it, I didn't know the weight of the jar. Throughout the check out process, he reminded me (three times) to find out the weight before I came in, and said this in front of other customers and in a clearly disapproving and arrogant tone. He was switching out with another cashier as we we were leaving and told the other employee to make sure people knew the weight before they bought peanut butter and referred to me as 'this guy', pointing at me from maybe two feet away. As we were walking out, he was yelling at another employee that it was lucky he showed up when he did because his boss just came in with change for the drawer, seemingly talking bad about his boss within earshot of everyone in the store. I've been a cashier before in several different types of businesses, and 'this guy' clearly just doesn't need to be a cashier. It makes the whole business look unprofessional and it made a bad day I was having a little bit worse. read more

Why..oh why..did they they make all that effort to create a nice new space and fill it with less than edible stuff? Everyone was ready for them to compete with Trader Joe's and the other new grocery chains...but their effort is lackluster. They used to have local produce, locally made foods and great cheeses at less than the normal price. You could kind of count on various staples. Now it is less than hit or miss and way more expensive. Their "deli" fare is par with Ingles. Their other stores seem to be more consistent with products that you can count on even if it is a discount store . Why take all the time and trouble to create this new thing and make it worse than it was . The new butcher shop is cool if there is anyone there. The "cafe" has not figured out how to be anything yet. Missing Hi-Fi Cafe that used to have consistently great coffee and sandwiches ready to go. And lastly the staff used to be friendly and understand their customer base, knew people by name, had a real heart...though the staff is still nice, they have made sure that they never keep any great employee with character or intelligence for very long.
