Crab & Squid Lamprais in Banana Leaf
    Sel Z.

I had been wanting to come to Hopper Hut for a while due to its wide selection and variety of Sri Lankan dishes, so I was glad that I finally got around to trying this place. Located in a plaza in Scarborough, it offers no-frills, good and delicious Sri Lankan classics ranging from hoppers, string hoppers, biryani, and lamprais, to snacks and quick meals such as stuffed roti and rolls, samosa, ulundu vadai, and other fried items. There is a large counter for quick take-out orders right in front (the first thing you see upon entering). The take-out counter always has a lineup of people. It's popular so it must be good! There is a full-service, sit-down restaurant at the back, where the menu is a bit more extensive and has different pricing than the take-out counter. The service we got was excellent. The staff were so friendly and helpful in explaining the menu items. All the dishes were cooked fresh in the kitchen at the back, and came out quite fast. Portion size for everything was BIG! One order of lamprais (rice combo with various vegetables, curries, and choice of meat, seafood, or vegetarian) could feed a group of 3-4 people. Items that we ordered: 1) Lamprais (rice combo wrapped in banana leaf) - We got the lamprais wrapped in banana leaf with 2 seafood options (crab and squid). There was an option to choose either samba or basmati rice, and we got the samba (a variety of rice grown in Tamil Nadu, some other parts of India and Sri Lanka, and has a small ovular grain, compared to the long grain of basmati). It came piping hot in a banana leaf. It was VERY HEFTY - a good few pounds when you lift it. I liked the small ovular grain of the samba rice; it had a soft and fluffy texture that soaked up all the curries well. On top of the rice were a mountain of all the good stuff: eggplant mustard, potato cutlet (one of my favourite items in the lamprais), pickled acharu, fried anchovies, boiled egg, lentil curry, and seafood curry. The squid was cut up in small square pieces, which had a nice chewy texture. The crab came as crab legs with the shells on (a bit messy and hard to eat, but fun). All of the content and curries were spicy, except for the potato cutlet and fried anchovies which were nice and crunchy (good texture variation to go with all the other soft-textured curries and rice). 2) String Hopper Combo - This combo was only available if you do dine-in at the restaurant (not available for take-out). The take-out version was 1 order = 25 string hoppers. The combo at the dine-in restaurant consisted of 10 string hoppers with meat, seafood, or veggie curry, and sambol of choice (onion or coconut sambol). We chose the coconut sambol (pol salmbol) because our other Hopper Combo already came with the onion sambol. For the curry, we went with the vegetarian curry, where we could choose either eggplant curry or dal (so many choices within choices!). We went with dal (lentils). It was a bit spicy but flavourful. The string hoppers also came with a bowl of hot turmeric milk (also called Haldi Doodh / "Golden Milk"). It contained turmeric, ginger, cardamom, cloves, other spices, and small pieces of watermelon. It was my first time trying turmeric milk, which tasted interesting and unique to me. 3) Hopper Combo - There were different combos to choose from. The one we selected consisted of 2 plain hoppers, 1 egg hopper, and 1 milk hopper. They came with onion sambol which was spicy. The hoppers were quite big, thin and crispy on the outer edges, and thicker, soft, and chewy in the middle. I LOVED the hoppers and combination of crispy & chewy textures. The egg and plain hoppers were my favourites. The egg hopper had an egg in the middle with still-runny yolk (loved breaking the yolk). The milk hopper, which was made using coconut milk and sugar, was quite sweet. All the hoppers were good to eat with the curries in the other dishes.

During Covid, I watched way too much Youtube and many travel vloggers went to Sri Lanka. Alot of them had the Egg hopper and it looked very good. I live in Calgary and obviously you cannot find Sri Lankan food here. So, I noticed during my search of restaurants along the 401 that there was Hopper Hut. It was on my way to Pickering so I decided to stop by. I was stuck on the 401 for 1 hour and couldn't wait to eat. Service was bad! A customer decided a Chinese girl was "NOT a customer" so he budged me and the person at the back counter knew I was waiting and never acknowledged that I was first. When I ordered the food took forever too! I ordered the Hopper and Lampries. I'll be honest I had no idea what Lampries was. It looked interesting and I thought it my resemble Chinese rice dumplings. Little did I know the Fish Lampries was HUGE! Feeds 4+ people lol. I'll be honest, I did not like it at all. The fish tasted like can fish and I ended up nibbling the rice and literally thew the whole thing away. I wasted all that money on bad food! I thought the Egg Hopper was made from coconut milk and should have coconut flavours. I couldn't taste any of that! Yes, I know this is not my culture so I do not know what is good or bad Sri Lankan food. However, it was not for me and I don't suggest it for foreigners because it is probably not made to our taste. I wished I didn't detour to this restaurant. I wasted so much time and money. Not a good start to my trip to Toronto.

I checked this place out on eater YouTube and thought. I wanted to try this place, we got mutton rolls and hopper with spicy coconut sambal, the service was good fast and quick, the hopper was crispy and soft with the sambal a little spicy perfect balance, and the mutton roll was awesome you know a lot of places sell mutton roll with out mutton they just stuff it with a ton of potatoes, so I greatly appreciated that, and this place is very reasonably priced im gonna come back and try the curries I think they will be delicious as well, the ambiance, is fairly small they have a restaurant but that is currently closed so you can only get take out but that's fine

I got my intro into Sri Lankan food via Hopper Hut eons ago. Located in the back of this non descript suburban office strip mall, I don't even remember how I stumbled upon this place. I'm a regular who usually orders the mutton Lamprais. The 5 pounds worth of food is.. well.. well worth it. It's a package of meats, anchovies, veg, egg and rice wrapped in a giant banana leaf is like a Chinese joong on steroids and spices. This is mostly a take out place, albeit they do have a restaurant in the back. If you've never tried Sri Lankan, this is a decent place to start your adventure.

Best mutton rolls ever!!! My family has been coming here to get mutton rolls. We've tried so many at all different locations but the ones here are the absolute best!

After eating at Hopper Hut, I now daydream about eating Sri Lankan food. I just love Hopper Hut! Lampries! I love the Lampries! Not only that it is sizable, cheap can feed 4 of me, the spices in there are so complex... with all those different spicies in it and serving steaming hot.. oh what a treat! Even I am not into Mutton (I don't eat lamb, goat!!) but the Mutton Lampries is A+ OK for me! All the items are delicious. And it is a good restaurant for sharing with your friends or fellow yelpers The owner of the restaurant that served us are really nice and friendly and with a nice smile! I definitely will be back! LAMPRIES!!

Authentic Sri Lankan food for a great price. The crowd here tends to be South Asian. There was a long and slow line for the takeout snacks we ordered for the road and also a long wait for the meal we ordered (hoppers, string hoppers and roti) although both were totally worthwhile. The food transports you to a tropical island in the Indian Ocean. Authentic and delicious. Lots of parking here. The building itself is in good shape - it has bathrooms in the restaurant area and hand sanitizer available for the handheld food products - but it is a kind of strip mall that is perhaps on its last legs and in a lower-income community. The mall area is pretty run down and populated by a really diverse range of first gen immigrants but if that makes you uneasy then you should not eat here because you will be one of the people who complains about it being "not clean" and the service not being fast enough and your poor rating will make this gem harder for others to find on Yelp. If on the other hand you love Sri Lankan food and understand that you are getting it insanely cheaply here and that low-cost and authentic food may cost you in time, then go for it. I loved this meal. One of the best I have had outside of Sri Lanka.

I did not know what to order so I settled for the khotu roti. I was in the lineup and another lady who was ordering food as well said "you can sit and eat" as they have a dining area. As I sat to eat and was enjoying the dinner a Tamil guy with a beard showed up and said "excuse me you can't eat here if it's takeout" lol I was shocked and insulted because other ppl were sitting there as well. Im walking out and never coming here again! How unprofessionally rude!

Last time we had Sri Lankan food was several years ago at Colombo and Unawatuna, Sri Lanka. So over the weekend, we decided to try it in Toronto. The place is pretty clean, the server was excellent and very polite (just like what you can expect from a good Sri Lanka restaurant). We had egg hopper, friend shrimp and stuffed roti with beef. The food was good. Especially the shrimp was tangy delicious. Though the menu said fried shrimp, but it was not crispy fried, it was stir-fried with a tangy spicy sauce... it was really good. The hopper was freshly made and everything was good. We really need to go there several more time to try the rest of the dishes :-p

Haven't been here in a couple of years, but I'm happy I revisited this place. Ordered combo no. 2 & 3 of appams & YUMMMMM. The staff was very nice. They made sure we had everything we needed. They've made a few upgrades with the decor which is good! The only thing I didn't enjoy as much is the seeni sambal (fish) or maybe it's not the flavour I'm used to. But the regular coconut sambal is always good! Will definitely come here again!

    Chicken lamprey

The moment you enter the restaurant your olfactory senses will be woken up by a myriad of fragrant spices. The friendly staff guided us to the dining area which was separate from the glass protected ready made section of the restaurant. The decor is alright, there are big tables and small tables. The server helped us as we did not know what to order. It's a good thing he advised us to order one lamprey instead of two. We barely finished one haha in the end. We also ordered roti, which was soft to my liking. It came with some sort of spicy spread, tantalizing and a hint of curry leaves which was a plus. Onto the main dish, a chicken lamprey (serves 2). Eating it was very fun, the whole thing was wrapped in some sort of leaf, maybe banana leaves. When you open it, the aroma of the dish will make you salivate. There's rice, lentils, eggplant (I love eggplant, this was really good and I ended up hogging it from my girlfriend), potatoes, 1 boiled egg, and a bunch of bone-in cut up chicken. I used my hand to rip a piece of roti and scoop up a morsel of the lamprey. Oh so good! Watch out, it is spicy! My mouth waters while writing this review. I would come back to this place. Takes all payment options including debit/credit (AmEx, MC, Visa). Along Ellesmere, turn into the parking lot before highland farms. Hopper Hut is at the corner and the end of the lot.

For those of you who have never had Sri Lankan food before - They love to have their food spicy. Food: We ordered Plain Hopper, Veggie Rolls, Masala Dosai and Vegetarian Plate. Plain Hopper: The plain hopper was almost exactly like a Dosa (Rice Crepe) but it was in a shape of a bowl. I am not a 100% certain but it had a hint of sweetness to it, so I'm assuming they add a little sugar to their Dosa batter for these hoppers, this hopper was useful to reduce the fire caused in my mouth from the vegetarian plate. Veggie Rolls: Veggie rolls were mashed potatoes with various spices, turmeric that was deep fried in a bread batter, the inside tasted almost exactly like Masala Dosai filling. These rolls were fairly spicy, they served it with a hot ketchup!! I wouldn't order this one again until I build up some more steel plates on my tongue to handle the heat, but my partner who can handle much hotter foods enjoyed it. Masala Dosai: I love south indian food and I have had masala dosa at many restaurants in the past. The one from here was excellent, it was more oily than what I am used to but it was still yummy. The chutneys that this was served with was just awesome, there was this red coconut chutney that was very flavourful. The filling was a potato filing and the Sambar served with it had actual whole cooked lentils in it which was an interesting texture, usually Sambar is served with lentils completely mashed up. I enjoyed this one very much and I would order it again. This was a main course that I ordered that wasn't spicy compared to everything else that we ate. Vegetarian Plate: Serving size of this plate was massive, it could easily feed two people. It came on a stainless steel plate all wrapped up in a wax brown paper in the shape of a square. The brown paper is the same one used by butchers! When we unwrapped the brown paper there was a banana leaf with all the food wrapped inside it. Once we unwrapped the banana leaf, all the different dishes were mixed in served on a bed of rice. There was a potato dish, a veggie dish that appeared to be made of flat green beans, a dish with some coconut powder in it and a lentil dish. It was very spicy but there was rice that I was using to mix in to reduce the heat. The experience of eating on a banana leaf made ordering this worth while, I would order this again but I would share this with another person. Drinks: Chai: I wanted a chai, I have ordered a chai at a Sri Lankan restaurant before and it was nice and spicy, but the one here was just a tea bag served with hot water, milk and sugar. I was a little disappointed that it was not authentic where it is steeped with a mix of ginger and spices. Ambiance: For the price that you pay the ambiance was alright. The place is bright, so not good for a romantic dinner, plus the spicy food might have you breathing fire at your date, depending on what you order. The chairs could've been more comfy, but I'm not fussy about that stuff I was here for the food. When you enter this place it almost looks like a bakery with this huge display case in front, only in behind the display case is all the awesome Sri Lankan food that they offer, if you would like to be seated there is a walkway to the left that leads you into their dining area. Table was set when we arrived and we did not have to wait for a table, the dinner napkins are paper but were nice and thick. Bathrooms: The washroom was clean, which is what I like to see because if a washroom is dirty I think the kitchen would be in the same condition. They have a hand wash station next to the washrooms because a lot of people eat with their hands, so if you enjoy that it is recommended that you wash your hands before and after your meal. Service: Service was fast and they offered suggestions when we asked. Our server kept our glasses of water filled as required which was important for me as I'm not used to the spice level in the stuff that I ordered. Parking: There is plenty free parking available in the parking lot right at the front of this restaurant.

It was not salty despite its look. Batata Harra (spicy potatoes) were good: a bit crispy. The dish also came with bread (for the baba ganoush, maybe) so don't overload on carbs with your choice of sides. The bread was a bit old & pre packaged but I just took it as a bonus anyway. The baba ganoush itself was decent. Portions are big here. If you choose mixed vegetables they're just tossed with olive oil and garlic. The red sauce on the side was slightly spicy - more tart. Unfortunately I left with a strong sense of disappointment. We ordered beef shawarma that was dry and dull (though I concede that if we had gotten the house made hot sauce it would have likely been fire), and then ordered two skewers of shrimp with some sides. The seafood is served from a secondary restaurant to the beef/ chicken one - and though they didn't seem incredibly busy, we waited 45 minutes for two skewers! The more frustrating aspect was that I definitely saw people order and receive their food before me. When I asked, I was told that people had preordered food before coming, and while that may be the case I refuse to believe that two skewers took 45 minutes. I would have understood if someone told me they forgot about my order or they had a problem with the kitchen, but none such explanation happened. They didn't even apologize and the cashier seemed to actively avoid me, and instead busied herself by chatting with friends or cleaning up the odd table. In the end we only received the food after we actively started to leave without it. If there was a friendlier service experience I would go back and give them a second chance, but the cashier's attitude really put me in a bad place. I hope that this was a one off especially since they seem to have such a loyal clientele.

It comes with a skewer platter (2 koobideh, two skewers of different kinds of chicken, and one skewer of beef chunks of some sort), a plate of qabili palaw with one lamb shank, a small plate of salad, and a basket of naan. The skewers were tasty and beautifully presented. The qabili palaw was large enough to feed 4 and the lamb shank was very tender. I wish there had been more lamb shank though. The lamb to rice ratio was rather lacking. The salad was salad and the naan could have been fresher, but all in all, it was a very satisfying meal. The chaplee kabob was $13.99. It came with two very flat, very crispy, seasoned beef patties over basmati rice, and a bowl of chopped tomatoes, onions, spices, all topped with a chili pepper. Safe, but tasty. We also got the zereshk polo for $14.99. The chicken was juicy and the rice was tasty. Tl;dr: Some Chinese aunties and uncles discover that they like long grained rice studded with dried fruit.

As a Haitian I know sometimes the customer service can be horrible although true about this place that's not my issue. When you first walk in it's hard to tell what the menu is... there's nothing listed anywhere so you have no clue what they are selling and there's also no prices. I ended up ordering a fish dinner with plantain and black rice. There was another man sitting and eating who was in deep convo with the woman taking my order who also wanted fish. After a conversation about there possibly not being enough fish to give me as a paying customer (the man seemed to be a friend of possibility the owner), they decided to give me my order. The meal came out and I was charged $50 for the single meal!! $50 CA DOLLARSSSSSS!!! Now I guess they can do what they want because there's no accrual prices listed! But $50 is ridiculous!!! And to add insult to injury it wasn't even that good! The plantain was hard like rock! Like it's been sitting there all day! The rice and fish had ZERO taste! It was a lot of money wasted! Not worth a penny if you asked me!!! The ambiance and set up is weird too... it's very dingy but again that didn't bother me because hole in the walls can have great food! This place is NOT that place!!! I will not be going back and wouldn't recommend!
