chilli chicken...different than anything I tried
    Shaheed S.

Hole in the wall that has been a staple in the east end of Toronto for some time. Place looks like your back in the 90's. However their staple item the masala chicken was wonderful. Had a ton of flavor and very spicy. I get why people with a spicy pallete flock to this place.

    Mutton kothu roti Boneless $8

Summary: good portion size, good price, and solid homemade quality make this family run restaurant a constant for locals despite the long wait times, drabby looking decor/location What I've Got: Garam Chicken Masala, roti, shrimp noodles, mutton roll, roti, kothu roti (mutton, vegetarian) What I Liked: KOTHU ROTI. Mutton roll was alright What I Didn't: garam chicken masala What I'll Get Next: kothu roti This restaurant is located a stone's throw from Woodside square, in the bleaker looking plaza. Looks can be deceiving, though: while this doesn't scream out "family friendly", it's got a great following and with good reason. The food is good, and the value is really solid. Service? Well, they're understaffed. Wait times? Not great - they're understaffed. Decor? Bare bones BUT THE KOTHU ROTI? On point. DON'T COME HUNGRY. Expect to wait 20-30 minutes after ordering for the food. We came on a Sunday evening around 8:30 pm and got two kothu roti dishes. It took over half an hour, although there were about 8 tables/12 people and only two staff (including one chef) But once the food got there, I was one happy camper. Kothu roti for both the vegetarian and mutton options were REALLY good. Tasty mix of bread with sufficient meat. Mild is actually mild, and probably my favourite amount of spice, properly done, in a kothu dish that I've had (other places make mild taste like nothing, or make it taste like Armageddon). The mutton rolls and roti at $1 a piece are fun to try, but aren't particularly special. Shrimp noodles were okay. They take credit AND they stay open late. All in all, a really solid kothu roti place - and more to try on the menu.

This place is great for late night eats. Consistency could be a lot better but it is good.

Small family owned place. Place might seem a little sketchy to some, but the food is really good and super cheap

Looks like a table by the front entrance is reserved for owner admin purposes. Front area filled with good luck paraphilia to ward off evil spirits. My friend knew all the staff and proceeded right away to speak Malay. Let my friend do the ordering, I recognized a few of the dishes such as beef curry, chicken curry (both with roti), boneless chicken rice plate, chicken skewers, grilled sambal stingray, penang hokkien mee and a few other dishes (look at photos) I didn't recognise. There was one interesting dish Rojak, a mixed salad of chopped fruit & vegetables smothered in a pungent fermented shrimp sauce, sweet, tangy, spicy, a whole smorgasbord of flavors dancing on my tongue. Three words I've never used to describe Roti, theirs was crunchy, fluffy and moist, wonderfully dipped either in the beef or chicken curry. Chicken skewers were grilled well, meat remained moist with a nice grilled aftertaste, not necessary to dip into the accompanied curry sauce as the overall flavor stood on its own. The Sambal sting ray was a little disappointing, didn't match the memory of the one I had at the Singaporean hawker food court I had a few years ago. Overall flavor was lacking. Penang Hokkien Mee is the real deal, large plump shrimp w/ firm egg noodles in a somewhat spicy flavorful broth. We came on a Friday night, the restaurant was about 50% full, what a great cultural food experience which needs further support.

Decor isn't really anything to write home about, it's not why we came here. The roti canai was super delicious. Roti was flaky and buttery, the curry nicely spiced and waiting to be sopped up by the roti. The Indonesian fried rice was recommended by the staff and it didn't disappoint. Char Kwei Teow was nice, the wok hei was very apparent here as well as the Kang Kung Belacan (water spinach). The hainanese chicken while tasty was very bony (menu said it had bones). Desserts were a perfect way to end the meal

We were quickly seated and the service was really attentive and appreciated. At around 6-630pm the restaurant began to quickly fill with couples and families. We had the chicken and shrimp Pad Thai and the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goring. We really enjoyed the fried chicken, coconut rice of the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goring, and the amount of spice in the sambal onion and anchovies. The noodles in the Pad Thai had a firm texture which we liked, but for me the sauce was a bit sweet. If coming to the restaurant from 6pm on a weekend, the parking lot is very busy and you could be circling for a parking spot and having to move around vehicles that are double parked for take-out orders.

We were seated right away and menus provided at the same time. There was a Lunch Special menu but we decided to order full portions from the regular menu. We were able to order right away and our drinks and ice water were brought out. Our food was brought out fairly quickly, all of it being hot. Roti is a must order item! The noodles were also very tasty with the shrimp not being overcooked. Fried chicken was crispy on the outside and nice and juicy inside. Service was attentive with the servers checking on us every so often and clearing empty plates away. When we were done eating, the server packed up our leftovers for us instead of just giving us containers. You can pay by card or cash, but just be advised that they do not accept $100 bills. Parking was pretty easy to get a spot that wasn't too far from the entrance.

Choice of little spice, medium spice and burn your tongue spicy. Luckily I chose medium spicy which was just about right. Ordered take out, got home, the hot noodles were starting to stick together, quickly separated using my chopsticks. The curry soup stock was placed in a separate round container, still very hot. The fish balls, tofu, chicken, bean sprouts were swimming in delicious hot spicy curry broth. When combined with the noodles I could have sworn I heard angels singing. Super delicious at a surprisingly reasonable price. Life is good.

We ordered Curry Laksa (not pictured), Char Kway Teow, Nasi Lemak with Sambal Ikan Bilis, Kui Dadar, and Kuih Seri Durian. The highlight for us was the Char Kway Teow. Great flavor and great wok hei. The desserts that they have on weekends were also quite tasty and not overly sweet. The Curry Laksa with the mixed noodles (we got half and half of the 2 types of noodles they offered) were also great as well. It was amazing for the price and I'm glad my Malaysian friend recommended this place to try out.

The place was far from crowded when we showed up, and we were told to check out the menus and place our order at the front. We decided to share the House Special Sandwich ("Pork loin marinated with house special recipe, tomato, fried egg, cabbage and peanut butter") and the Malaysian Street Style sandwich ("4oz ground beef with a taste of M'sian spice, tomato, fried egg, lettuce and sweet & spicy sauce"). (I also got a milk tea to drink, and it was really good. Very rich but not too sweet.) The sandwiches were both excellent. They were packed with flavor and the various components all worked really well together. The Malaysian Street Style did flirt with being just a little too sweet, but it was balanced out with the other components. Everything was decently priced, too. The bill, with tip, came out to around 25 bucks, which is great considering the quantity and caliber of food we were given.
