I was a loyal Horace Mann Retirement account holder for 23 years. Being an educator ( now retired) I liked the educator focus. Since I started in 2002 my fived accounts earned 4.5%, a decent rate. I made my initial allotments of investments with the help of my representative and over the years, exercised more and more personal choice their in allotment. The initial problem as I see it is that they had a hard time retaining quality representatives. I had several over the 23 years, none for more than five years strait. When my best advisor left them in 2022, I had just started retirement. While living in Wisconsin, my rep was in New Jersey. Never heard from him personally for 3 years. My final advisor was a nice young man with an outgoing personality. However, he lacked the knowledge to give meaningful advice. When I asked him about RMDs and how I could strategically retain the most of my life savings, he suggested that I buy an Indexed Universal Life policy from...Horace Mann. I was floored that, given three weeks to come up with a plan, this was his best shot. I immediately started looking for a new company to handle my investments. Fast forward 3 months, I finally sat down with my new company to initiate the rollover. Horace Mann's procedure to transfer funds was convoluted, archaic ( paper forms) and ridiculously slow. So slow, in fact, that it took THREE MONTHS for my accounts to all finally make it to my new broker (in the form of paper checks). So much for customer service. Bottom line- if you want inconsistent and incompetent advice, coupled with glacially slow administrative procedure, Horace Mann is the way to go. I wish I had changed firms earlier despite the decent fixed rate. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. read more

They may be very prompt in getting people quotes and knowledgeable about their products, the problem is the payout. They will keep you waiting for as long as legally allowed. They are the only ones with a mailing system that takes up to 15 DAYS even though the packages are put in the mail, that day. We are still waiting for a package to go from Indianapolis to Minneapolis. If you want your beneficiaries to have to fight with a company. This is a great one for that. read more

Had a very difficult time transferring funds from my retirement account to a new account. Kept telling me my paperwork was wrong. I would fill out new forms exactly as they requested and then I'd get a letter 3 weeks later telling me the form was filled out correct. I would call to get clarification, follow the exact directions as the agent, and then 3 weeks later get yet ANOTHER letter telling me I filled it out wrong. This has been going on for seven months now. You cannot talk to the same person, you have to talk to a different agent everytime If I ever get my money from them, I'll be happy to be at another company. read more

On June 22, 2023, we purchased auto and homeowners insurance policies from Horace Mann. (Previously, we had had the two policies with Horace Mann for 18 years and had switched to another provider six months before June 22 due to rate increases.) At the time the new policies began on June 22, we authorized the first payment of auto insurance to be deducted from our bank account in the amount of $355.37. Instead, on June 26, an unauthorized amount of $698.74 was deducted. That day, I contacted our agent, who was wonderful and fought for us throughout this unfortunate process, to report the unauthorized deduction and ask for the overage amount to be refunded to our account. I sent her a screenshot of our online bank account showing that deduction. Our agent contacted the billing department, saying they were "ready to issue a refund," but that they required to see something showing our "before" and "after" account balance to prove the deduction had taken place. I argued that our balance was irrelevant and an invasion of our privacy, and that the screenshot of the deduction proves that it happened. I spoke with someone in the billing dept., and they held firm that this was the policy. After days of arguing, Horace Mann finally said they could refund the unauthorized amount by paper check without seeing our balance, but that they couldn't refund it electronically. This caused us financial hardship as we were out of the country. I gave in and told them to issue the paper check refund, but that we would cancel our policies and file a complaint. I was told a manager would call us. At this time, July 13, we have cancelled our policies, no manager has called, and we haven't received an apology from anyone but our agent. Yesterday, I was told the check had been cut, but not mailed. Even though our agent was wonderful and tried to help us, she just didn't have any power in the end. After 18 years of customer loyalty, Horace Mann essentially stole money from our bank account, never apologized or owned it, and laid out requirements for us to meet in order for them to refund our own money. I want others to know about the bad business Horace Mann is doing. read more

Worst insurance company ever! The agents are very difficult to reach: they tell you they will call you back, but never do, so you have to reach them out again and again. My father had a car accident on April 11th and, I could not reach the adjuster until the end of May. He did not bother to get the police report or pictures of the cars: I had all the info, but he was not interested in it at all. Then, he took a week off, and another adjuster said she will call me back, but never did! As an educator, I think we should deserve better insurance, so please stop saying that your insurance is for educators! By the way, when I tried to find a repair shop, no one wanted to work with this company! read more

The quality of delivery of service to its customers is at an all time low. Claim representatives harass and disrespect customers. I've always been told that the buck should stop with the individual at the top. Don't waste your time reaching out to the person at the top. If there is a blatant issue, the person at the top lacks the leadership skills to deal with it. Rather, it gets sent to unknowledgeable minions at the lowest level of the organizational chart. The Horace Mann Insurance Company seeks to rack up your premium payments only. This company does not model or deliver any type of service to it customers. Should you walk away from this business? Legalized gambling - that's all insurance is. In my 20th year as an educator, I am used to being taken advantage of. However, when I got my latest house insurance statement, I was stunned at yet another rate increase. I have lived in the same house for 20 years. I have never filed an insurance claim for anything, house nor car. So I was confused at how my rates were being increased again - $2000 for house insurance. I don't live in the fekin' Taj Mahal, so how in the hell am I paying so damn much?! When I called to find out, I received an attempted lecture on how insurance works. "Well when there are a lot of claims due to something like a natural disaster, we compensate by raising rates ..." said the woman who unluckily received my call. Interrupting her, I stated, "I know how insurance works. I wanna know why I'm paying $2000 for house insurance when I have filed no claims in two decades?!" But it gets better. The insurance on my truck is $120 per month, alone. On my second vehicle, $100; and this is with a multi-car/house discount. I'm damn near 50 years old. These are the same rates I paid when I was 18. I have had no accidents and no tickets - What The Hell?! She immediately told me the agent would call me to address my concerns. Three days later, he left me a voicemail and never attempted a second call. Soooooo, basically, he isn't that concerned with my concerns; therefore, I'm switching companies. I stopped in another insurance office to get a quote. When giving the specs for my present house coverage, the new agent told me a quote of approximately $800 per year for my house and $100 for both my autos. And, it's better coverage. My existing auto insurance with Horace Mann was for $100K; if I destroyed some yuppy scum's Volvo, and he had three of his stupid ass blokes along for the ride, and each suffered minor injuries, I was only insured for $100K. Needless to say, 100K would be exhausted immediately, following the given scenario. The new insurance's quote for nearly half the cost provided more than double and a half of additional coverage. As an educator, I am used to being shat upon, looked poorly at, and undervalued. But this is Horace Mann, insurance specifically for educators. The company's moniker is named after a famous teacher. They should be championing affordable rates for teachers; but they are in goose-step with all the others who exploit teachers for their own profits. Well this teacher is jumping ship. I hold no loyalty for those who hold no loyalty for me. To hell with Horace Mann - he was a "Whig" and his namesake is an extension of their successors, the Republicans, and their continued assault on American educators. read more

I have been trying for over a month to contact Horace Mann, you have sent me a letter with phone # that just rings out, I have let it ring for over 30minutes several times. Trying to use the online connection does not work either.My policy was due over 10 years ago, you evidently sent me a payout some years ago but I never got it and it was returned unclaimed. You Never tried to contact me again. I finally realised that my life ins. was due and contacted you,I spoke to Gabriel who requested that I fax over proof of ID, which I did, drivers license and passport.You eventually contacted me by mail, gave me policy#,0600243100, phone # 01 8009991030 which does Not connect(just rings out) and your website. I have had Horace Mann for auto insurance since I started driving. I have had no traffic violations and my last fender bender was over four years ago. A few months ago, my monthly premium went from $40 per month to $108. Their explanation? They receive VIN and mileage information that is recorded any time I have service on my car, and my annual mileage has increased. This is completely untrue. My commute to work has dropped from over 30 minutes one way to less than 10. I'm now paying less with a new company than I was before they more than DOUBLED my monthly rate. And the coverage is better. read more

They state they, "believe in treating clients as [they] would like to be treated". I seriously doubt they'd want to be treated like idiots. This company has been a major source of stress for me for some time. I had several automobile insurance policies through them, as well as RV insurance, and home owner's insurance policies. I can't speak for ALL the agents, but the two I've dealt with were less than stellar. The most recent one is a guy I've never spoken with and he's never tried to contact me to address my questions and concerns which were related to clarification of their dollar figures. For a company supposedly "Founded by educators FOR educators", they need to take a refresher course on simple math equations. Horace Mann wants to convince clients that 2+2=7. Their figures never add up and they always blame it on something else and expect clients to just accept it. In addition, they constantly send mountains of paperwork - all in separate mailings. Some days I'd get three or four mail pieces, some containing multiple-page documents! Now I can breathe a huge sigh of relief as my new insurance company is clear, concise, and knows their math. I had their automatic insurance for 12 years. No tickets or accidents. Rate suddenly increased $190/year. They cannot tell me why. When I call the 800 number and stay on hold for a while, a young person always reads a script about how insurance rates are configured. I got a better deal with more coverage and went from $1000 deductible to $500 at a local State Farm. Horace Mann is a scam agency for "teachers". No one working there is an educator. They just prey on them. If you get auto insurance, find a person and a real office you can go to, not a 1-800 number. Luckily I never had to use their insurance. If anything had happened I'm sure I would have been spending my time frustrated on hold. read more

I have never had such a bad experience with a company before in my life. It started with me getting something in the mail saying my next payment was going to go from my regular payment to $200. I called to see what was going on and to have them cancel it. After seeing that they still took my regular payment out for that month after I cancelled, I called back. I explained the situation to the guy I talked to and asked him 2 questions: Will I get a refund because I cancelled before the deadline and was the reason it was going up the next month is due to the accident I had several months ago? He answered yes to both questions. I told him I thought that was crazy because the accident was not my fault, someone hit me and ran. I told him that as long as I get my refund I'm good. So a few weeks went by and I haven't gotten my refund. I call back and speak to a rep who was very nice. We spent about an gour on the phone as I explained my situation. As she looked further into it for me, she found out that it didn't have to do witht the accident at all but it was about them not receiving some papers they said they sent to me. I told her I didn't receive them and if she can send them to me, I will fill them out and they can cancel my cancellation and keep my regular payment that they already took out and my future payments will only be what I had been paying. She said she had to get it approved by her manager and she would call me back. She did but I was on the other line. I called her back and she was on the other line. I had to explain the situation all over again to a different rep. That rep said she will email me the paperwork and when I return everything should be fine. I returned thinking just that but about a week or 2 later I see that they took $200 out of my account. I called back very upset because at this point I'm tired of people telling me different things. I go over the whole situation again with another woman who was a bit rude. After about an hour she dcides that they will refund me as long as I can show her proof in my account that they took it out. So I screenshot it and sent it to her. She said that was not sufficient so by this time I'm extremely pissed because I'm tired of their games. She said she needed an actual statement from the bank but my statement was not ready yet. She had me three way my bank just for my bank to tell her the same thing. So she finally accepted what I gave her and said she will push through the refund. I sent an email to Corporate so that they would know how horrible their reps were dealing with me. That seemed to be my biggest mistake because Corporate said they can't issue the refund. She said that although their reps did feed me bad information several times, that they were still doing what they were supposed to do. She tried telling me other stuff that clearly didn't make any sense. They not only did not refund me my money that was promised to me, they tried to say that I still owed them money. So after ending ties with them with my car insurance, I still had a renters insurance policy that would expire in a couple months. I called and talked to a guy and asked him to change my address because I just moved. He said he would and apologized for the trouble I had with them. So when I call back to get a declaration to give my new apartment people, the lady said that my address was never changed. Please, do not waste your time and money with this company. This is the WORST financial company I have ever used. I have a Roth IRA and a 403B with them. I have tried SIX, yes SIX times to retrieve my money and transfer it over to a better company (AXA/Equitable). Each time, I am denied. Why? Here's why: they have either never received the paperwork (even though I have copies of what I sent them); I didn't finish completing the paperwork (again, I have copies of the paperwork clearly showing I did); I didn't send it in within 30 days of the request (they screw you over by not sending you the required paperwork for 2 weeks, then miraculously it takes 9 days to get to your home- even though you're only 3 states away- then it leaves you only 5 days left to fill out the paperwork with your new financial institution, go through their required departments, and then finally sent in); they do not keep a phone record of any of the times that they have spoken to you on the phone requesting the information (meaning, I have to call basically everyday until the paperwork arrives); and they are extremely unknowledgable on the phone when you DO call them ("uhhh, I don't know about that"....and...."uhhhhh, I can't answer that".....and....."I don't know about that type of form" etc.); they will not speak to your new financial institution in which you're transferring the money (meaning, even though I have it in writing that my new financial advisor is able to speak on my behalf, they will not speak to him or his company, then will only speak to me- thus, I have to be in his presence when I speak to Horace Mann and this is not always convenient). This is a horrible company and I regret ever using them for investments. I have been trying to get my money out of their company and into a new one since February 2008 (it is currently July 2009). They will not give it to me. I have taken money out of other financial institutions without incident and have rolled them into AXA/Equitable. My financial advisor through AXA/Equitable has worked in the business for 15 years, 8 of which were on Wall Street. He has never had this much flack given to him regarding withdrawing money, nor how unprofessional they have been toward him. DO NOT EVER INVEST WITH THESE CROOKS! read more
