Hurst Farm is a gorgeous family owned farm that specializes in plants for the garden and has a tidy country store all on a classic New England homestead placed on top of hill so as to accentuate beautiful autumn days and give the Eastern Connecticut countryside a sense of space that may be otherwise missed while surrounded by trees. The farm brings you back to the world of yesteryear with an old fashioned small farm, beautiful gardens shining with meticulous care, and a country store filled with unique items and simple delights. There is homemade jam, pies, and apples in the fall, homemade candles, knickknacks, greeting cards and books with a back home theme, and a fair sampling of treats to make the trip more memorable for the younger ones and hot coffee for adults. ( the last time I visited I asked for tea, which they weren't selling but promptly got their own personal tea kettle going to accommodate me ). The erergy you get from the family running the farm hints at an invigorating, hardworking, old fashioned country lifestyle who's bounty is shared with its customers with pride, generosity and plenty of cheer. Maybe you can find a particular item that you can't find in any other store, but maybe you will simply accept that what brings you back more than anything is the unique and refreshing environment that penetrates the heart more deeply than even your favorite store in the mall. Visiting Hurst Farm is a great plan for a Sunday afternoon, with the whole family if you have one. Be sure to bring a camera as there are some beautiful scenes to capture both outside and inside, especially on a sunny September or October day. read more
