Okay. I like this thrift store. They often have good sports clothing, and a decent selection of other items including coats, jeans, clothes in general, shoes, housewares and more. The staff is sometimes awkward, entitled acting women. I don't get it. I see the customers being polite and the staff acting put-upon. It is so uncool. This on more than one visit. The last time the woman behind the register had a real go-at a man and fellow staffer who dropped something. It was an accident. Her behavior was shameful. This is just one example I have witnessed. Store has clothes, housewares, books, very basics nothing vintage most items are about 1 to 5 years old. Books are in good condition and a good variety. As for the customer service, the staff seems to be friendly to locals and cold towards tourists. I saw a lady ask to use the bathroom and the workers in the back room snubbed her and said no. Definitely worth a stop. This thrift store tends to get a lot of donations from the "junior league" set of the Truckee/Tahoe basin, so there is a lot of good stuff. Better for women and kids than men, as far as clothing goes. Like many thrifts, they use the colored tag method of rotating stock, so one color is always 50% off, and you may be in for a real bargain. Several rooms to this place--walk all the way through. Good prices on books and kitchen stuff, and a fair amount of furniture. The Hospice has another thrift store in Kings Beach too. The people in the Kings Beach outpost are a little less friendly than the Truckee employees, in my opinion. But the Kings Beach store has lots of good stuff too. read more

I didn't have any interactions with the staff - I was looking for a few household replacement items and didn't find what I needed, but I picked up a few books for a friend who was at home recuperating and it was nice that I didn't have to pay much for them, I think $1 for hard covers. read more

Do not ever take an item to this shop and realize you've made a mistake and need the item back and are willing to pay for it to get it back! I took a pair of alpine ski boots and the next day realized I still needed them for a race I was scheduled for in 3 weeks. I left a description with them and waited for a call that they had looked through the piles of donations as they said they would and found my boots! I even offered to buy my own boots back!! Didn't happen that way however- I went in person today and chatted with one of the managers who informed me they don't take in alpine ski boots. **Wellll yes they did and do because as we were chatting there were 2 pair of alpine ski boots right in front of us which I pointed out to her. So she said we almost never do...huh?? Which is it? Do you have acceptable donation rules or not? And they said they lost the note with my boot description. So don't put much faith in them asking for a description of the item! So then she said we thought we were looking for gray Nordic ski boots and when we were sorting stuff for the first of the month sales we ALL were looking for NORDIC boots - I pointed out my description never said Nordic they were Nordica N2 boots! So then she proceeds to say they were probably thrown in the trash since they don't take usually take in alpine boots ( refer to above ** sentence! ) So bottom line is these folks probably have a good mission to support hospice which I admire but they have a long learning curve still to deal with customers! 1. Train your workers so they know the rules - including manager training because it was a manager who accepted my so called unacceptable Alpine ski boots in the first place! 2. Train your workers to be far more welcoming when people come in with donations. Every time and I mean every time I or my friends have brought in donations NOT one person greets you at the donation doorway in the back! In fact they give a brief glance, give an eye roll and get busy turning their backs or disappear to a far right portion of the receiving area! Huh?? 3. I was shopping the same day I unfortunately brought in my unacceptable alpine ski boots ( gray size 7 Nordica with N2 on the toes and sure foot label on the side - in case anyone bought them or helped themselves to them) anyway I digress so while shopping this gaggle of paid or volunteering girls were just there doing nothing but chatting - at least they could be saying welcome look around - or straightening the racks by size within the color sections but most of all make potential customers feel welcome. I use to feel good about donating here but today stoped in to donate some almost new books cleats and rain boots and they treated me like i was bother and in their way. I try to only donate relevant items and like to help out the community by passing items along that i no longer need. I am going to look elsewhere from now on to donate. read more

Very disappointed. We came up to the summit to help clean out a relative's cabin and rushed to make it to this thrift store before they closed at 5:00. We showed up just after 4:00 and I walked in to ask about where to donate and I was told "it's on the door we don't take donations past 4:00" (didn't see this online at all) and as I started to mention what we went through to donate here (seeing as we are here all the way from Sacramento and cleaning out a cabin 30 min from Truckee) I was told "I don't care where you're from or what you have we aren't taking it." Needless to say we had tons of nice things that could have benefited the hospice, but luckily we found some locals who were more than happy to take it for free. Next time hear people out before shutting them down. Or actually post things online. read more

Decent enough and worth a stop, especially if you are in the market for snow or ski clothing! A great selection on quality used snow gear with good prices. Otherwise, store seemed a little sparse to me in the knickknack department. Lots of empty shelf space I'd like to see packed with items. Three star overall but four star for snow gear. read more

I used to donate house hold items here as well as buy and donate books. In the last few years the paid staff has been so bad i dont want to deal with them any more. They do have a few good volunteers, but only a handful. Any thing good that gets donated never makes it out to the shelves. I have seen them carry our arm full of stuff on many occasion to their own cars, and have overheard many calls, them offering good things to friends on the phone for practically nothing. Every thing that dose make it out is extremely overprices by these same woman. The only time you can find a good deal is when some of the other volunteers are pricing things, and that is rare. Its very sad because this shop is for a good cause, but over last few years its been getting worse and worse. read more

This is one of the most horribly run businesses I've ever seen. The staff will literally yell that they are closing in 5 minutes and if you want "a chance to checkout" (like they are doing you a HUGE favor) you'd better be up there in two. They are incredibly unpleasant and rude. What pushed me over the edge though was seeing them deny a toddler the chance to use their bathroom, which they stated was "not for public use" despite the mother pleading with both staff and management. Instead they stood by while the little girl literally pooped herself (and then sobbed in embarrassment) as there is NO WHERE else around that the parent could run them to. Icing on the cake was the staff acting like there was nothing they could've done and showing ZERO remorse. Absolutely pathetic; no common decency here. Let your cash talk and spend your money elsewhere. read more

We used to LOVE going to this thrift store. But the prices are getting higher and higher every time we go! And the women who work there (the employees, not the volunteers) are getting cattier and bitchier with every passing year. It's even hard to get a simple Thank You when donating! So disappointed at the "manager"- volunteers are superb! Recently saw a necklace that was highly overpriced, checked it on EBay and went back to make an offer- I'd rather support a local hospice if possible! Manager refused to negotiate so I walked out and bought the same item from a stranger in TX for a quarter of the price! She badly played her hand on this deal- really a shame she just didn't care... Today I was looking at some very cute shoes that were sitting on the floor in a huge double laundry basket full of random things. I figured they were go backs or new things that had not yet been tagged and put out. I already had two huge bags of things and was getting ready to check out. When I asked the price of the shoes I was told it was someone things who worked there and she was buying them. This older gal soon after walked up and picked up the full basket putting it on one of the cashier's counters. I was at the register after waiting my turn and I asked to see a ring in the case. The older gal snapped saying " you are going to have to do it another day. We are getting ready to close and we have other people to ring up!" I thought that my $52 purchase (could have been even more if I bought the ring) should have been more of a priority for the business than kicking me out in such a rude way in order for this gal to have the huge basket of things she picked out for herself (before customers had a chance to see and I'm sure while she was suppose to be working) rung up. They really need to get better control of some people who think they have "entitlements" over the customers. Without customers, you have a closed, out of business store. read more

i stop by here every time i come to truckee just to see what new/old mountain kitsch they've accumulated. this time i saw a perfectly good baby shit brown 70s fondue pot w/forks for $5, and lots of fuzzy blankets for $10 and under - a perfect combo for when you're snowed in (which we almost did get that weekend!). they also have special discount days, of which i've kinda forgotten what they are - i think the last Monday of every month is 50% off day (and things are already cheap!). they are also dogfriendly so i don't have to leave the puppers in the cold car. it's really close to the Safeway and the Ace Hardware store, so if you're going over there anyway, you should stop by. and they donate to hospice care, so even better! read more

My hobby is going to thrift stores. So I have been to dozens of thrifts in Reno, Sparks, Incline, all over the lake and the Sierras. When we take trips out of state we go to thrift stores. That said , Tahoe Forest Hospice Thrift is one of the best if not the best thrift shop. Living only 4 miles away I visit 2-3 times a week and always find something new. The turnover of merchandise is so fast due to quality donations and fair prices . You will be amazed by the quality. The only downside is that it is usually crowded with people looking for deals. Many locals visit daily! The staff may be harried at times and no nonsense because of the crowds. People have to remember that this is a Hospice thrift and many of the staff are VOLUNTEERS. The hospice program is fabulous! My mother spent her last days at a hospice and the only way I can describe the staff is that they are angels. I love supporting this hospice thrift store, donating thousands of dollars in goods and spending about 20 dollars a week on average for the last 5 years. It's a win-win for everyone. My mother, grandmother, and I went to this thrift store last week when we came to Truckee for the day. We've gone to this thrift store before and had a fine experience. This time, however, I was a bit disappointed. One of the women working in there was very sweet and friendly. However, there was another woman, who I think may be the manager (after reading past reviews), who was pretty rude to my mom and I. We had found a very cute pair of flip flops (they looked very simple, just a nice pair of brown flip flops). I was really excited until I saw the price...$45? I didn't think that was right so we asked the lady if they were actually that expensive and she responded (very rudely) that yes, they were that much because they're originally a $150 pair of flip flops. I looked them up online and the pair that I wanted sells for $50, which is expensive but that's the price you'd expect if you buy them from the name brand. I was wanting to buy them from a thrift store! They definitely overpriced them. From a thrift store, I'd expect a pair of second hand flip flops to be, at most, $5 but I honestly would've bought them even if they were $10 because I really loved them. No way was I paying $45 for a second hand pair of flip flops. read more

If you read the critical reviews you will read about staff, selection and organization issues. Really?? This is a thrift store run by volunteers to support a local hospice. If you want an experience go to Nordstroms. Every time we pass through this area we stop here. Sometimes we find great values and other times, well, perverbably thrift store junk. The thrift store is my go to place for random stuff I wouldn't buy new. I needed a crock pot to degrease some carburetor parts (with pine sol). I paid 4 dollars for one and I couldn't be happier. Products change throughout the day, not just daily. In a community full of ski cabins from the 70s, it's no shocker to find a lot of vintage things laying around. It's worth a look. read more

We have a vacation cabin in Truckee, and often visit the store. The plus: some great bargain, and some real friendly volunteer staff (at the cash register). The minus: a really obnoxious manager and paid staff who are so rude to people who drop off (donate) stuff. Don't be fooled: the friendly people are volunteer. The rude entitled people are paid staff. We got yelled at for staying a few minutes past 5pm in the store. We also got reprimanded for dropping off a microwave oven after someone on the phone said it was something they'd take, and someone else (the obnoxious manager) said it was not when we showed up. Found some great stuff! Took 3 teen girls shopping and all found clothes they loved and wear constantly! Lots of brand name clothes - many with tags still attached. Staff are super friendly and helpful! Love the new bigger location with much better parking than their old store. read more

I'd give them one star, but they do randomly have great deals. I have been a Truckee local for 10 years avidly shopping and donating to this hospice. Over the past year however, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot contribute to this 'non profit' organization. The last few times I have been there, I was specifically looking for boots. I found plenty of options, however, while looking at their price tag, I looked on my phone to see the price of the same item brand new. 9 times out of 10, this thrift store had the used product marked up by at least 50% from the new price online. Today I went in and found some great pots and pans and furniture I have been needing! I had about 150$ of things stacked up and needed to set them somewhere to continue shopping. Today, the woman behind the counter must have been having a bad day or life or something, because upon me asking if I could set my things somewhere, that seemed to set her off. She yelled and I ended up leaving my things on the floor and walked out. All in all, keep your smart phone handy while in here so you don't get potentially ripped off, and expect attitude from the senior staff. It's bizarre, but that seems to be the common thread of my experiences there, even in the good years I had shopping there. Big Bummer in all honesty. It was such a great place. read more

Wow!! I can't believe some of the bad reviews I'm reading, they are giving a bad review because they didn't get there way (so sad and annoying). Most of the staff are special needs individuals who are well managed and cared for. I gave 4 stars only because the prices are definitely overpriced for donated items (we can thank Macklemore for his "thrift store" song, and the hipsters). Some of the comments about rushing at the very end of the day to donate and rejected are ridiculous, (do you like staying longer at work when you want to get off on time?) things need to get processed, and they don't have time to always cater to your write offs. Stop acting so entitled people and stop writing 1 star reviews because your crappy attitude and selfishness wasn't their priority! Grow up, this place is a way better option then retailers, and if you don't like it, go to Nevada. Your reviews are definitely not a true representation of this store. Maybe some of the staff or managers may be rude at times, but it's called a transfer of emotions, you deal with stuck up rude people all day, who cry because they don't get the price they want it random things they want, and you might find that they may have a bad day here and their, they are humane, so be respectful and nice, it might get you somewhere in life. read more

Went in today to donate some gently used very nice children's clothing at their new location, they tell us we have to carry everything all the way through the store to the back, we carried the items all the way to the back and were met with some grouchy old lady yelling at us saying "all the way in the back over there!" Repeatedly! I'm sorry but when I'm making donations I do not expect to be treated like they are doing me a favor! I was making a trip to the dump later that day and could have just as easily taken it there. So if you go to donate expect to be treated like they are the ones doing you a favor and helping you. Dropped five bags of near-perfect condition children's clothing without so much as even a thank you! Just a bunch of old women trying to boss you around. read more

Whenever we come to North Shore we visit this store. Everything in the place was half-off today which was really cool! We bought almost 2 baskets full of stuff. I got a good laptop casefor $1.50! A cute purse for $1.25 and lots of other great stuff at great prices! We had selected most of the things we bought before we even found out it was on sale so! We didn't even notice the 50% OFF banner hanging outside so it was a nice surprise when they told us. We'll be back! read more

For me , its a must stop when I am in truckee! Found many kitchen items for my second home, and some decorative objects as well. Also , they used to have toys which was great, as I got many for my grandkids, but they are not allowed to sell them anymore, not sure why? , but they still have some baby items and clothes,bedding towels, and lots of games and puzzles and books for cheap, so I dont even have to go to the library anymore! My family has been shopping here for years when in town on vacation and enjoy supporting a good cause. My only complaint comes from our first donation attempt. The lady who was "assisting" us with unloading our carload of sporting gear, clothes, etc was very aggressive and boarder line rude. We decided to leave with all our stuff and find somewhere else to donate. A bummer experience for us who were excited to continue to support hospice. read more

in the past, we have donated and shopped here. lately, the last 3-4 times when we have tried to donate, there's ZERO greeting nor even a small "Thanks for donating" from the people who staff this place. the most recent trip in, the person working in back saw me with an armload of very recent novels (all bestsellers), and without any "hello": "what do you have?" me: "books plus more." "what else do you have?" me: "kitchen things, small electronics and school supplies." "what kind of school supplies?" me: "binders and books." "we might not want the binders. i'll have to take a look at them" this same general dismissive attitude multiple times...i just turned to walk out. she called after me, "hey, don't you want to leave those books? we'll take the books! you just leave them on the counter!" it just seemed so abrupt and rude. i just turned around again, left the books on the counter and walked out. that's the final donation here. i won't go back to Tahoe Forest Hospice Thrift. we will rather drive over to Incline Village where the gracious people at the Presbyterian Women's Thrift Store are at least willing to say "hello". we donated a full set of Mikasa china for 12 including serving pieces, looks like brand new; a Pentax underwater camera, two portable DVD players with all accessories, Star Wars logo binders for back to school, a brand new gift set of shampoo, lotions and bath gels, sets of children's bedroom valances, etc. read more
