He told us the saltwater eel was in season and amazing so we took the risk. Worth it!! We started to devour at this point...

This was the most amazing dinner experience we've probably ever had included fine dining in New York City and Los Angeles. This should be at least 1 Michelin star. Very underrated, seems like a gem that only the locals know. Service was impeccable - they even let me buy their last bottle of an extremely rare dessert wine. We had multiple courses of local seafood dishes unfamiliar to us, and each was recommended and completely outstanding. Even the desserts were absolutely to die for. If you eat anywhere in Venice, spend the money and eat here with Maurizio (and Luca!). It should be #1 in Venice! You won't regret it if you appreciate delicious food. -from 2 foodie Americans :)

We've been to Venice five times now, and Hostaria da Franz is the best of every place we've tried. Be comfortable with the fact there are no menus, just a daily run down of the best of locally-sourced food by the fantastic Maurizio. Be comfortable that no prices are quoted - even going all-out, our meal last night was a reasonable €200 or so. Genuinely excellent Venetian experience This was our third visit, but the first to the new, much easier to find, location. And it has become even better. Many reviews will tell you how fantastic the locally-sourced-only food is, or how welcoming host Maurizio is. Just know that the way it works is : no menu - Maurizio will run through what is good that day, but with no prices. We have seen a few Americans look a little uncomfortable with no menu to peruse, but this works so well. For Venice, the lack of prices is not a cause for concern. My wife and I had the full experience and the bill was around €200, which was around half that at Cip's Club, but da Franz was twice the experience. The restaurant is relaxed, dress is informal, they take cards. All in, this is easily the best restaurant we've found in Venice in 5 visits, and people do get advised to come by the concierge at The Danieli, so we aren't wrong...

Lots and lots of restaurants to choose from in Venice but this unassuming restaurant is a true gem…read more It's easy to miss as it's tucked in a corner right by a bridge. Once inside they have a couple tables with small window views of any gondolas passing by. We started off with a plate of lightly fried sardines topped with pickled white onions. The fry on the fish was super light and those vinegar-y onions were the perfect pairing. We cleaned that plate. The lasagna was well balanced with the meat, sauce, cheese. The squid ink pasta was chewy/al dente with a subtle touch of seafood flavors giving the cuttlefish. It was very umami but nothing too overbearing. Delicious! It's a Family business that was been around for many years. Grazie to the friendly staff and chef!

The jovial mood with the waiters with big personalities is gone. The menu you can find online is no longer available so you get a very limited menu to choose from--nearly entirely seafood. So if you have anyone in your party that just wants pasta with a red meat sauce or a non seafood lasagne, not available. We were a party of 8. Two people ordered the scallop appetizers. Pretty presentation on shells. 3 tiny scallops in the shells. More like an amuse bouche. Totally disappointing. The linguine with clams as an entree had clams so small you almost needed a magnifying glass to see them. Couldn't taste the clams and annoying to try to eat something so tiny , and just try to eat the pasta with all those tiny shells. The baby shrimp on polenta was actually good. But again the shrimp were like tiny hatchlings tempura battered. Tasted okay except for those that were soggy from the polenta that was very soupy. I wanted the gnocchi with crab which was on the very limited menu but no longer available. The alternative was gnocchi with a sea bass sauce which I chose but didn't like at all. The gnocchi were good but the sauce wasn't at all for me. We had to continue to ask for side dishes for the bread, butter, olive oil, salt and pepper. We will not return. Poor value for your money. Plus there is a cover charge and service included in your bill which was a surprise. Very sad to see our favorite Venetian restaurant decline so much.
