Unfortunately, this was one of the worst dining experiences we had in Italy. We only chose this place because our preteen daughter really wanted to eat there, so we stayed -- but we regretted it. The waiter was overly pushy from the start, constantly upselling and pushing bottled water (which, of course, they charge for). The food was highly mediocre and felt like typical tourist trap fare. Our two teenage daughters ordered pesto pasta, and it was overwhelmingly salty. My wife's pomodoro pasta had no flavor at all. I had a pasta dish with red sauce, mushrooms, and shrimp -- the shrimp were tiny, rubbery, and clearly frozen. This place is all about location and catching tourists, not about serving quality food. I said I wasn't going to bash - but after 12 hours and being super swollen, here I am. Came to Benice expecting the same quality of food we got in Rome & Florence. Our perfect single day in this city was completely ruined by this meal. As my husband said, "Olive Garden has more flavor." If you are US based, you know exactly what I am talking about. I got the spaghetti with seafood. One prawn, two shrimp, a few mussels and clams with squid. The seafood itself was fine - it should be as I'm on the water - but nothing to blow my skirt up. The pasta? Salty and watery and.....boxed. It was hard, thin spaghetti and tasted like the $1 great value brand, My husband got the spaghetti with mussels and clams. Not even sure what the sauce was supposed to be? Garlic and olive oil perhaps? One thing we have found is that Italians love to brag about their food - in Venice, along Rialto bridge you had people begging you to come to their restaurant - so we figured we would go off the beaten path away from the touristy areas and got completely shammed. As for my previous comment: unless it is fresh pasta or gluten free, while I am not celiac, have a problem processing it and my joints and stomach get bloated. We are on day 6/8 and after eating bread/pasta or multiple courses, this one meal has me feeling absolutely horrible and in pain. read more

We found the food here to be good, but not great. The staff was really friendly and funny so that made the experience better. The restaurant is tucked away on one of the smaller canals but is on a street with lots of restaurants (we were actually shooting for Ristorante Levante up the street but it was packed). The bottom line: I wouldn't say that you should avoid this restaurant, but I wouldn't tell you to make it a must either. It's ok. read more

This spot was recommended to us by our AirBNB host as a more local spot. It was in a quiet neighborhood away from the really busy areas. The food was fantastic. The menu was mostly seafood with a few traditional dishes. Their seafood stew took the title from my favorite at home in California. The cuttlefish cooked in ink was also fantastic. Venice has some of the best seafood available in Italy and the chef here makes great use of it. Service was personal and excellent. That's not a given in Italy. Prices were reasonable. Reservations didn't seem to be necessary. read more

Amazing spot. I think what made it the best was the servers. Our server was hilarious AND helpful and made our experience super memorable in the best way. We very much enjoyed the scenery as well--we sat outside right beside a beautiful canal, and several musicians passed by on this particular May night. The street it's on has a cool energy to it, and we felt like we could spend all night there. A superb spot for a date night or a group. They have a great selection of Venician food, including lots of great seafood, but if you don't like seafood they have several other more standard Italian options available too. Went there with my family our first night in Venice. We sat in the garden in the back. We ordered a few dishes and then split them so we could all try what the others got. It was all delicious though we decided that the shrimp polenta was the best. The service was excellent and attentive, but don't expect them to come by too often or give you the check immediately after finishing your food, it's common in Italy to take your time after a meal and enjoy your company - this place reflects that. read more

Another beautiful night in Venice. I found this restaurant on yelp and saw it was highly recommended and it did not disappoint. The bruschetta was very flavorful and the bread was outstanding. I had to try the cuttlefish as it's a classic Venetian dish amd it was fantastic. My wife had the salmon and it was good, just not outstanding (but nothing compares to fresh Alaskan salmon). Pietro, our waiter was a blast, great sense of humor, had us laughing the whole time. The restaurant is right on a canal, was peaceful watching the beautiful wooden boats pass by. Stopped in for dinner before going to learn to row a gondola. The server spoke good English, was very attentive, and very knowledgeable about gluten. Started with a caprese salad - on par with other restaurants in the area. The husband finally tried the carbonara pasta dish, and really enjoyed it. I had gluten free pasta with mushrooms and shrimp. Was good, but a little bland. The portions were generous, and I was full after my entree. The house red wine accompanied our meal, and was good. Forced my husband to finish his meal with Tiramisu (since it was our last night in Italy) - was so pretty and he said delish! The only GF option for dessert was the pana cotta, so I passed. We made reservations based on reviews from other friends; however the dining experience was mediocre. I think most people rate this place high is because of the owner, he is kind of a character though. It's located just off from the main area and they offer dining outside next to the canals. I think it'll be perfect to eat outside during the summer nights, but it was a bit too cold this time of the year (March). The lasagna was too mushy for me. We had the bruschetta, fried calamari and caprese salad to start (all pretty good). For mains, we had seafood pasta (the best) and vegetable tortellini (a bit too salty), kids had the lasagna and chicken cutlet (all gobbled up). I had the fixed menu for 20 euros. The white wine was good (you get one hefty glass of wine). For first course I had the spaghetti with tuna and olives. It was a big portion and good - little too oily. Next I had the fried fish with a side of spinach. The spinach was good but it's pretty hard to mess them up. The fried fish was alright and nothing special. A friend got the liver which looked a lot better and he said it tasted really good. I forget the dessert, but it was actually really good. Well place might be a bit overpriced, but service was good, clean tables and dishes, caring personal, even tho it was a bit not so nice smell in the beginning and hanger for clothes was falling on us every 2 mins. The owner brought us a local dessert coffee, it was very good. We had the luck to be there before the busy season, it was quiet, and most of the patrons were locals. Easily accommodated a group of 10 of us on a work trip. The maitre d' was as affable as they come, built up a rapport with us and gave amazing suggestions. The wine flowed, the main course impressed, and the deserts were pleasant surprises all around.
