We had so much fun at Da Carletto. The people there made us and our 9 month old daughter feel like royalty. It was honestly so wonderful how they treated us, it is worth repeating. My mom (and I) absolutely her lobster linguini. I thought the gnocchi was incredible because the sauce was tasty and I believe it had been broiled. I was disappointed by the food and somewhat the service. Firstly when I found the restaurant I walked right past it because it seemed closed. It was dimly lit (and no in the romantic way, though I was traveling solo) and seemed shuttered. When I entered, there were no diners aside from a young couple who seemed to be having only drinks at a corner table. The only attendee was at the register whom didn't even notice me come in. Having to wait for a few minutes I had to walk over to ask for a table. At that moment I already felt it was a bad sign but I was hungry and willing to give it a chance. A mistake I hope to learn from going forward. Being in Venice, of course I was looking forward to a seafood, especially fish, for dinner. So I ordered the baked scallops with shrimp and mushrooms for appetizer and the baked turbo fish with potatoes. The potatoes (the garnish) were the best part of the meal. They were distinct in that they tasted more like a yam than potatoes. The baked scallop was presented in a large scallop shell. A mix of scallop pieces, miniature shrimp and chopped mushrooms stewed together into a grey soup, topped with baked cheese bread topping. My first reaction was. I can't eat this. But not wanting to be rude I picked at it. It didn't taste terrible but the scallops were not fresh, the shrimp looked like and were the size of grub worms, and the juices were grey, likely due to the mushrooms, in color. The dish was plain at best. Although the potatoes were the best part of the meal, the turbo fish was okay. I'm fairly certain it's the first turbo fish I've eaten so I'm not sure how to rate it. It was presented skin side down resting over boiled potatoes with capers, olives and tomato garnish. When I cut into the fish with my fork I could tell the skin seemed rubbery and not likely edible. So I basically scraped the meat off to see it. I purposely ate the potatoes with the fish, otherwise I probably wouldn't have finished the meal. Did I finished my food. Yes, I was hungry. Did I enjoy it, no. The service was not great. I had to find the lone attendee to be seated. While waiting for my food, the attendee disappeared for more than 10 minutes. In that time a couple went in and left when the attendee didn't return. And when I said I was paying for dinner with a credit card, the attendee seemed exasperated. Perhaps she was hoping for a tip? This small rustic Italian place has SO much to offer. The restaurant has a very unique aesthetic, and very nice staff. The green pasta is LITERALLY the best pasta either of us have ever eaten. I mean literally, THE BEST PASTA WE HAVE EVER EATEN. every bite was a small climax. The clam pasta (mine) was extremely good as well however it really couldn't stand up to the green pasta. Free Bread rolls were nice and hot. Wine is sold by the bottle, and relatively inexpensive. For dessert we had the tiramisu. Extremely well plated. Delightfully creamy. And perfectly chocolatey. We found Da Carletto by wandering the back streets/alleys of Venice. We always read the posted menus as my husband needs gluten free. The decor & ambience was authentically historic & charming, with antique plates, ceiling beams, historic column, mostly 2-4 top tables, but a few larger tables. About 25 or so total guests. The staff was very friendly & welcoming, especially our server, Arsany. They accommodated all our dietary needs (gluten-free for 1). Very reasonably priced! The gnocchi and sea bass were delicious. My husband tried the excellent Barolo wine and thoroughly enjoyed it! I had 2 desserts in order to try both, Crème Brûlée and Tiramisu. We were there mid-afternoon with very few other guests, a very pleasant time. Arsany was extremely helpful, tending to all needs, but not intrusive or overbearing, encouraging us to take our time & enjoy. We travel a fair amount as we own a modest US travel agency. One of our best dining experiences ever! We will definitely return on our next trip to Venice! I have spent a total of nearly 3 months in Venice spread over 8 trips. This was the best meal at a reasonable price I have experienced! The menu is varied but not overwhelming. The food was well prepared, well seasoned and well presented. And the price was so low I had to add up the charges myself to believe it! Amazing - one of the best meals I have ever had in all my trips to Italy. I started with the best caprese I have ever had - the mozzarella was extremely fresh. My husband started with tomato soup with chicken - so good. But the main courses, which were both found on the "specialties" menu - oh wow. I had a truly disturbing experience with this restaurant last night, and I want to share because the people there displayed such an appalling lack of service and human decency that it's important for others to know. My daughter (18) and I are in Venice for a school trip. I'm staying near this restaurant, and her group was going to be on the other side of Venice for the afternoon. We agreed to go to this restaurant for dinner, and I made an 8:00 reservation. However, my daughter doesn't have a data plan, and texts haven't been going through reliably in Venice. She texted me at 7:15 to say she was on her way, and I texted back to meet me about 5 minutes away from the restaurant. She never got that text, and so she went to the restaurant, to which she'd downloaded directions. When she got there, the host rudely told her 1) the reservation was at 9:00, not 8:00; and 2) she could not wait for me in the restaurant. She started to cry because it was dark, she couldn't get reception on her cell phone, she didn't know where I was, and it was dark - all of this in a foreign country. She kept trying to text me. Finally the texts went through and I went to find her. She was literally down the street from the restaurant in the only lit spot. She was scared and sobbing. I told her that I had checked my phone and the reservation was indeed at 8:00. So, we went back to the restaurant, and I asked the employees why they had made her wait in the street when she told them her phone wouldn't work. They said it was my mistake because I told her the wrong reservation time. I showed them the confirmation on my phone, and they said it must be wrong. Finally, at my insistence, they went and looked at the electronic reservations, and it was right there: 8:00. At that point the woman who seemed to be the manager shrugged her shoulders and said, oh well, they'd made a mistake. I lost my composure. I told her it was completely unacceptable to just throw a crying kid out in the street. She still didn't think it was a big deal until I asked her how she'd feel if the same thing happened to her own daughter in a foreign country. At that point she became very remorseful and did come out and tell my daughter she was sorry. But I can't recommend this restaurant, because it would have been so easy for them to be kind and helpful in the first place, to check the reservation, to offer the phone so my daughter could call me. We had a fantastic dinner about five minutes away at A Le Tole. Go there instead. I highly recommend it. read more
