A private room at Pilgrim House
    Kerry C.

It's entirely possible to stay in a clean, safe, friendly place in the heart of Memphis for $15 a night. That is, if you don't mind sharing and cleaning up after yourself. The place is Pilgrim House, Memphis' only hostel. The Pilgrim house is located inside First Congregational Church in Cooper Young. It's a little more cozy than the average hotel. When I stopped by, a college student was working in the library, the RAs were checking people in, and a man who had walked to Memphis from California was talking about his adventures with a small pack of Australians in the hostel's sunny kitchen. It's only $15 per person to stay in one of the shared dorms at the Pilgrim House. There are two single-sex dorms and one co-ed dorm, each with several sets of bunk beds. There are also a handful of private rooms, which are are $30 for one person (plus $15 for each additional person). There is a private bathroom, as well as dorm-style bathrooms. Guests are allowed to use the kitchen and the library, take whatever they want from the free food stash, and rent bicycles for the day through Revolutions Community Bike Shop (which is located in the same building). There's just one catch - because Pilgrim House is a hostel, they ask that everyone who stays there pitch in by doing a small chore. Most of the chores are things like unloading the dishwasher, taking the recycling out or sweeping the kitchen - they're light and take about five minutes.

Typical Chore at the Pilgrim House! Supplies right there, takes like 1 minute!

My family and I have stayed at this hotel for several years, and we've always looked forward to…read morereturning. This year, we even brought guests from our church because of the positive experiences we've had in the past. Unfortunately, this stay was extremely disappointing and did not reflect the level of service and quality we had come to expect. One of our biggest concerns was the breakfast service. Some of the kitchen staff were not welcoming. In particular, an older staff member was rude and snappy when we politely asked if the food trays could be refilled. Customer service should be friendly and respectful, especially toward guests who are simply asking for food that is supposed to be available during breakfast hours. We also experienced problems with housekeeping. My family consists of six people, so we needed additional towels and washcloths. We were instructed by the front desk to bring our used towels downstairs before receiving replacements. After doing exactly as we were asked, we were only given two towels and told we would have to wait until the next day for the rest. That was simply unacceptable for a family of our size. The condition and cleanliness of our room were also very disappointing. The comforters and pillowcases were stained, there were stains on the sofa, and we found hair in the bathtub upon arrival. The garbage disposal had a terrible odor, the shower head stopped working multiple times, and several sprinkler heads were broken. With temperatures around 100 degrees outside, the air conditioning struggled to work, making the room very uncomfortable. We also noticed tiles falling off the walls, and the elevator stopped working during our stay. These were not isolated issues--many of the guests who traveled with us experienced similar problems in their rooms as well. The outdoor amenities were just as disappointing. The pool was dirty, with cigarette butts and other debris floating in the water. The outdoor tables were not cleaned, trash was scattered around the area, and there were cups filled with cigarette ashes left sitting outside. There were also two outdoor grills available, but neither had propane. When we asked about it, we were told that propane was not included, which was frustrating since the grills were presented as an available amenity. After being loyal guests for multiple years and recommending this hotel to friends, family, and members of our church, this experience was especially disappointing. We expected much better based on our history with this property. Considering the amount of money we spent and the relationship we believed we had built over the years, it is unfortunate to say that we will not be returning next year. We hope management takes these concerns seriously and makes the necessary improvements in customer service, cleanliness, maintenance, and overall guest experience. We would have preferred to continue making this our annual hotel, but based on this year's stay, we can no longer recommend it. This version is firm, detailed, and focused on specific observations, which generally makes reviews more persuasive and useful to both management and future guests.

Got to the room AC wasn't working and I seen red dots on the bed sheets. Thankfully they gave us a different room on another floor. The front counter person didn't act happy with me asking to change rooms. AC worked in this one and nothing on the bed, thankfully but for cleanliness and upkeep... Never again will we stay here. These pictures are just a small part. The cheap towels were stained and thin and rough.

Some of the little cabins are original & some are new built to look like the original historic cabins. We LOVE the new built cabins that look Vintage. They are so adorable & so unique. It's obvious a lot of work went into them, the attention to detail is incredibly impressive. I mean they even decorated them in the Vintage fashion to the exact details of the era. Very Impressive. It was definitely a labor of love that went into this place. It's just breathtakingly beautiful in the morning fog & the sunsets are legend from this place. The "Delta" cabin is our fave, we love the back screened in porch. It's a shack, they are all just little shacks, but it's the most adorable shacks EVER. haha. "PLEASE BUILD MORE DELTA CABINS" I can't get reservations for my fave shack!!! LOL There are no tv's or anything it's just a shack, you're basically glamping so bring everything you need, especially bedding if you want to sleep a little more posh. That's what we do. The coolest thing here is the juke joint & blues bar that has live music. You can't even get a room here when the festival is going on. If you want to attend the festival you have to book a year in advance. Highest Recommendations.
