Description of yoga class at Hot 8 Sherman Oaks
    Mikey W.

Today i was invited to attend a Hot Yoga class at Hot 8 Sherman Oaks, specifically the Monday Night 6:15 PM 26 + 2 w/ Greg W. First time at this Sherman Oaks location, i've previously been a member of Hot 8 Beverly Hills for a decade. Parking was a breeze in their adjacent garage, two hour validation provided during check-in. Front Desk staff are friendly, attentive, and very helpful. This location is massive. OMG. Great decor, loads of cubbies for your belongings, showers, plastic bags for your wet clothes, everything you could need for a hot yoga class. Really impressed with the entire setup, and wish Beverly Hills could up their game to match Sherman Oaks. After check-in i was guided to the studio where my class would take place, which was HUGE compared to BH location, but oddly i couldn't figure out a great position for mat placement before class. My friend warned me, "this class is really hot, you should put your mat over by mine." But i insisted on being away from the door and in front of the mirror as i have consistently practiced for many years. As i laid there, the heat began to overcome my body. About ten minutes later, a man walked in with long hair and a plaid shirt, looking very LA. He said to me, "have you done Hot Yoga before?" To which i responded, "For quite some time" but he heard, "Not in a long time?," because that's what he repeated back to me. I've practiced Hot Yoga for 17 years, and started out as an apprentice studying under Jim Kallet down in San Diego (worth a google). I've had the pleasure of taking some of the most difficult classes and teacher trainings, 30 and 45 day marathons, enduring some of the most challenging instruction you can imagine. Then i met Greg W. Honestly, I've always wondered what music would be like during 26 + 2 and i must admit, it's an absolute distraction for the posture series. It didn't help that i can't hear in one of my ears, there was a speaker right above my head, and the volume was at 100%. I knew we all were in trouble when Greg W. said, "Finally, here's a little Beyoncé to get us through." If the overbearing noise of sharp native american winds, artificial waterfalls wasn't bad enough, let's add horrible country Beyoncé to the mix of triple digit heat with a hollering instructor blithely unaware of the chaos he's created in the studio. The heat was so hot, it literally felt like Dante's inferno. I felt like i was trying to do yoga in a Russian banya. Literally around posture 13, Greg played a track of a fire pit burning in the wilderness. The heat level was set at 135° and Greg yelling over everyone was at 110%. Now, if i'm in a 26 + 2 class being berated by an instructor to "fight my inner voices and not give up" meanwhile combating 450% of overkill in music, heat, and garbage instruction, then surely i must've died and gone to hell. By posture three, i was literally knee deep in a pool of my own sweat because the room was so hot. All of my previous instructors have always said don't leave the room, but if by posture ten i'm showing signs of Heat Stroke (e.g. confusion, nausea, fatigue, flush, excess sweating, lightheadedness, and dizziness), low potassium because i'm having muscle spasms, and my shoulders are burning from the heat coming out of the vents above me then we have a problem. I couldn't even tell you WTF Greg W. said during the class because it was a constant barrage of colloquial yoga nonsense being battered into the humble hearts that filled the room on monday night. Was there a message? I didn't hear one. I was too busy wrestling 300% of Greg disrespecting my body thru this abusive practice. People were dropping like flies, and at one point, i lowered my head into child's pose because i couldn't even sit upright without going into dizzy spells. As the class was wrapping up, we're in our final breath posture to close the class and i sat there, drenched in sweat, devoid of electrolytes or any usable protein in my stomach, and suddenly almost had a blackout because the heat in the room was simply way too hot and unsafe for this posture series. As the lights shut off, Greg opened the door and scurried out not even to stop and ask if people were okay, or provide an encouraging word. Probably the worst class i've ever attended, and i'm so greatly disappointed that people are given the idea that this is what 26 + 2 is all about. NEWSFLASH, it's not, and i must admit, i've had some of the most incredibly inspiring and uplifting instructors in my 17 years of practicing the 26 + 2, but Greg W. just ain't one of them, and i'd implore anyone reading this review to avoid his class like the plague. Please see my photo, the class description from the Hot 8 website says "No Music" but you get Beyoncé in Greg's iteration. Eye roll. Hard pass.

Just finished my welcome week at Hot 8 Yoga in Sherman Oaks and it was honestly a 10/10 experience! The vibe is super relaxing from the moment you walk in, the space is clean, smells amazing, and immediately puts you in a calm headspace. Everyone there was so kind and welcoming, from the front desk to the instructors. The classes were definitely hard (I don't have much endurance yet), but every instructor made it feel doable and encouraging. Each class had its own vibe, and I genuinely enjoyed them all for different reasons. My personal favorite was the Hot Barre class, I loved constantly moving instead of focusing on how hot it was, lol. Overall, such a respectful, peaceful, and motivating environment. I'd recommend Hot 8 to anyone looking to get into hot yoga or wanting to switch up their routine with something uplifting and challenging. Loved it!

Need to update that in the last year this studio has really excelled even further in cleanliness, class options, studio staff operations. Everyone is so kind. There's even new flooring in one of the rooms. Ash, Christina, and Rachael Bell are so so incredible. Still need to try more instructors but love this studio SO much.

Excellent studio with clean facilities, spacious locker room, showers available and lots of mirror space! Instructors have fun music to keep you going and distract you from the heat and sweat. All worth it! Be sure to park on the 9th floor and validate your ticket on the machine BEFORE you head down the elevators to the studio! Know that parking is free for 2 hours with Validation! Again, validate first on P9 if on weekdays before 5:45pm. Get it done and have a great practice! Thanks for a wonderful visit and a terrific flow! Really appreciate visiting different Hot 8 studios and checking out the same same but different vibes in each one!

Ask the Community - Hot 8 Yoga

What brand of mats are used for the rentals?

Hi Alyssa! Thanks for reaching out. We provide Manduka Pro-Lites for rent at our studios! They are non-porous so do not absorb sweat and are just the right combination of firmness and support. We look forward to practicing with you again soon Alyssa!

First timer here...is it recommended to start learning Yoga by taking hot Yoga courses and is Hot 8 yoga an advanced yoga studio or suggested for semi beginners?

    yes

Does the Sherman Oaks location offer slow flow/meditative classes? I'm only seeing Sculpt and Power on their schedule and those both seem to be a little more difficult and active than I'm looking for. Trying to find something that is more relaxing.

    try 26 and 2 class

Where is the outside classes for the Sherman oaks location located exactly?

We have an incredible rooftop terrace located on the 9th floor of the parking structure associated with the building we are located in (15260 Ventura Blvd). You'll access the structure from the gate on Ventura Blvd, drive up to the 8th floor to…

I am a yoga newbie. Which classes can I take here?

I was recommended Hot Fusion Yoga. Adriana B is an amazing teacher as well as the other teachers.

Is the Sculpt class beginner friendly?

Do I need to bring a mat?

Yes, if you don't want to rent one, it's $5 I believe for the mat/towel combo

Are there showers at the Sherman oaks location?

Yes .. great showers by the way.

Am I able to buy a yoga mat and towel here instead of renting?

Yes. We have a retail boutique where you can purchase everything you need to practice yoga.

Do I have to bring my own lock?

You do NOT need to bring your own lock. All of our lockers come with lockers in which you can program your own unique locker code. See you on the mat.

If I get a membership, can I use it at any of their locations or only one that I select?

All of them!!! And they're great.

Unfortunately, one employee, Mason, repeatedly spoke to me in a way I found rude and unprofessional during class, publicly "correcting" me despite my using modifications that other instructors had explicitly approved due to health reasons. To avoid further issues, I stopped taking his classes. Outside of class, I asked Mason a simple question about baked goods he sells at the studio, and he ignored me entirely--looking away and not responding. After that interaction, the environment noticeably shifted. Staff who had previously been friendly stopped acknowledging basic greetings, avoided eye contact, and treated me differently than other clients. Sophie also participated in this behavior. I was only attempting basic politeness and engagement related to the practice. The behavior felt deliberate and exclusionary, not incidental. For example, when I reached 300 classes at this studio, no one asked me to sign the barre--despite that milestone being clearly tracked in the system. I had signed at 100 classes previously and went on to complete 50 more classes after reaching 300, yet it was never acknowledged. I was consistently polite and respectful. The change in treatment was noticeable and unexplained. I stayed longer than I should have because I needed consistency while ill, but the passive-aggressive exclusion continued. As an unambiguous Black woman in a predominantly white space, this experience felt like microaggressive ostracization rather than a misunderstanding. I contacted ownership when I left, but no meaningful action was taken. I'm sharing my experience so others don't encounter this kind of treatment during a vulnerable time in their lives.
