First time I ever hated a hot dog. My order was so completely screwed up and disgusting that I tossed the entire meal into the trash. I ordered a grilled hot dog with chili, onions and a side of cheese, onion rings, a slice of chocolate cake. Strike 1 -The chili was mostly beans which I abhor, no onions added, some disgusting looking cheese sauce on it which I thought would be on the side. Strike 2-Onion rings were hard as a rock. Strike 3-I received cheesecake. Not chocolate cake, cheesecake. How does one mix that up??? This meal was so messed up, I wouldn't insult my dogs with it. Only worthy of the trash can. Good dogs I stopped in for a late lunch today. The place looks old but it also has character. In the room where you order and get your food they have old photos, and the dining room is a colorful place with wrought iron chairs and a small TV in the back. For lunch I ordered their Original Hot Diggity Dog (A Coney Island style chili dog) and a cheese dog. I liked them both. The Coney Island dog was authentic. Everything was ready so it only took a minute after I ordered before my dogs were assembled and I had my food. This is a comfortable laid back place. There was only one other customer when I was there today but they were engaged in a friendly conversation. On my only other visit a few years ago I remember the same thing happening, only with more customers. On my last visit I also had a very good burger, so I did want to mention Hot Diggity Dog offers more than just dogs. This is a family owed restaurant that has been around for decades. It is always good to support local establishments. I should visit more often. read more

It's not chili you're serving it's just ground beef, dont get defensive, just look up a chili recipe. Never put a press on a burger, it squeezes out any juice the beef may contain. Don't believe me, look it up. Fresh sliced sauteed mushrooms are just better. Take a survey and you'll see. Dont cut corners, it only takes a minute. If you get a bad review offer your customers a way to make it right. I didn't say it, but I've been a chef for 35 years. Stopped in yesterday. Asked the guy behind the counter for his recommendation. He said he made the best burgers and chili dogs. We decided to split a cheeseburger because it was $7.95 and we figured it would be big. Added an order of fries and two drinks. The burger was the size of a McDouble at McDonald's and the 'large ' fries were also the same as Mickey D's. He said that will be $17.95. Geesh. I would be embarrassed to charge his prices for food that was right out of a restaurant supply and not much of it. We were shocked at the price and lack of value. My bf is from Sarasota and has been coming here since he was a kid. We stop here at least once every time we visit and the burgers and dogs are on par with what we eat in San Francisco. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Support this family-owned business instead of the chains in SRQ. There is so much food in Sarasota that is just boring and not very good. HDD takes their time with the burgers and turns something simple into something delicious. Skip Culver's and all of those other fast-food joints and go for the real thing here. read more

I am writing this review in response to the diatribe written by ASD A. on 03/22/2010. First and most importantly, Hot Diggity Dog has been family-owned and located in the same location for almost 40 years. In order for those facts to exist in a Sarasota restaurant, or anywhere else for that matter, their experience and longstanding quality speaks for itself. It speaks for serving satisfied Sarasota customers for years, and in some cases, serving generations of repeat customers. ASD A.'s review of Hot Diggity Dog's Steak and Cheese was slanderous to me since it is my favorite menu choice. I know for a FACT that the steak on this sandwich is purchased from a local butcher/meat supplier who supplies many of Sarasota's restaurants. For ASD A. to have had to put ketchup and salt on his sandwich is an indicator of his own personal tastes, and not of the sandwich quality itself. The sandwich is plenty flavorful with the tender steak, fresh onions, fresh peppers, fresh melted cheese, all piled into a fresh hoagie roll. As of recently, Hot Diggity Dog now accepts credit/debit cards with a mi mum purchase amount (I believe $ 10.00). I wonder if ASD A. realizes that credit card companies charge restaurant owners a transaction service fee just to swipe their card? The Dog was cash-only for years because they did not want those fees to be the cause for raising its prices. Please note, though, that since the acceptance of credit cards, I have not seen any price increases and will assume the owners have absorbed those costs themselves. The remainder of ASD A.'s service complaints are laughable. Yes, there usually is a crowd during the lunch and dinner hours. And yes, the owners do usually talk to everyone because they know everyone. I will apologize to you myself since you and your friends felt ignored, though I find that hard to believe. The crowd that caused your food to be somewhat delayed waited for their food also. The reason they wait patiently is why The Hot Diggity Dog has been in the same location for close to 40 years! I obviously was deeply offended by a bad review of my favorite sandwich at one of my favorite restaurants. My purpose was to give other people a balanced view, and I hope I have succeeded. p.s. Looking at ASD A.'s Yelp profile, he claims Sarasota to be his hometown, yet it appears some time is spent in the Philadelphia area. Hey, there's nothing wrong with that - go Eagles! - but us legitimate, been-here-for-decades, Sarasota residents could do without a Philly part-timer offering Philly social/culinary advice on one of our local landmarks. read more

Great place, Dave was great! My girl and I split a Chicago dog and a burger both were awesome. While we were there the walk in traffic was steady and Dave had a dialog with everyone including us.
