Hot Dog House is located in Covington, and their menu offers hot dogs, smoked sausages, burgers, BBQ, chicken and fish sandwiches, and sides (onion rings and french fries). We had a hot dog (topped with chili and coleslaw), and a smoked sausage with mustard and onions. The hot dog was super red, a popular dog in the south; wasn't a fan of the taste nor the toppings. The smoked sausage tasted a bit better, but it seemed like it had been sitting on the grill for hours. Both of the buns were dried out. They were not open inside when we stopped by - one of the employees came out with an order pad, and took our order. The food was ready within 5 minutes or so. Maybe we should have tried the burgers? Either way, I'm glad I was able to check this place out while in the area, but most likely wouldn't go out of my way to return. Went by here because I was told about it from a friend who has lived in the area all of his life. He said it was a Covington tradition. When you walk in, you know exactly what you're in for. It does not give you the feel of a 5-star restaurant, It is a dive. So I grabbed a few things I was suggested. I'm a big eater and I was rather ready to enjoy some food, so I didn't hold back here. I got 3 dogs. My go to dog was Ketchup, Mustard and Chili. I got what my family calls a "Beau dog" which is sauerkraut and coleslaw and then I got one with just Mustard. I got an order of onion rings and fries. Dogs were good. Buns were well crunchy and dry. I think maybe stale is the word, however, they were 100% edible and didn't really ruin anything. I have had a lot worse. I would rather have stale bun than one that is soaking wet. Which has happened with dogs before. The onion rings were a bit overcooked, but I think that's just how they do it. I'm not huge on hot dogs, really, but this small café with its homespun sign hanging outside forlornly somehow grabbed my interest. It's located near the old train depot in Covington and has a humble, typical interior--that simple country diner look and feel you'll find in many places in the South and Midwest, well-worn and withstanding the test of time. The hot dogs are pretty good, too, and they also have BBQ on offer and expected sides such as coleslaw. There's not a whole lot else really to say: friendly service and simple all-American fare for lunch. Avoid sitting near the window though on bright, sunny, days because the sun pretty much bakes the front of the restaurant under certain conditions it seems. read more

I've been eating here since the early 90's. Some of the best hot dogs and fries that I've ever had. They're usually busy during the afternoon and everything is hot and fresh. I do miss the arcade room that they used to have next door; back in the late 90's, I would spend the day there, playing Space Harrier, foosball, listening to music and eating about a ton of hotdogs and fries. Took a chance on this place as I saw it in my GPS. many times the GPS has non existing places. Figured I could hit KFC which was also off this exit on 64 in case this place was not there. Saw the dogs were steamed so I hesitated and decided on the "Barbecue" sandwich. A pleasant surprise. Pretty good pork sandwich and cole slaw on it did not have those celery seeds in it so an added bonus. Took care of my lunch fix and will get BBQ again tonight when I hit Richmond. Probably would not go here again. The burgers were very dry not enough juice. The hot dogs came out very red but friend said they tasted okay. The fries were also very hard. The service was rude and the place did not look very inviting. Also hard to find a place to sit when there are more then 8-10 people there. Bathrooms were disgusting as well. read more

It is what it is. A mom and pop place and it is as clean as it gets. The counters, the floors, their work space couldn't get any cleaner. I have had their hamburgers, sausages and crinkle cut fries. I'm not a fan of the red hot so I've never had that but my dh loves them with chili, onions and mustard. This place is a Covington staple. If you want a quick bite, friendly service, to review the paper and have a satisfying lunch, I'd give it a shot. read more
