After all, hot dogs are deeply embedded in America's food culture. After hearing so much about this local family restaurant and the important role it has played in the lives of the people of Roanoke and its visitors throughout the years, I decided to go visit for myself, explore the restaurant, taste its food, study its interior design and ambiance, and experience for myself a taste of the famous Roanoke Weiner that everyone is talking about. First of all, I was very impressed by the cleanliness of the restaurant and how it managed to mix the old with the new in its contemporary interior design, furnished with new but furniture design from the restaurants of the 60's, and souranded with artworks and photographs relevant to the long successful history of the restaurant and it's founder. Branded as the Hot Dog King and Roanoke's Oldest Restaurant, customers of all ages will have memories of the time when they visited their old location and soon to be new customers as they visit this new location with a historic resilience. All focused on one simple but delicious American cuisine item: the hot dog. When I entered the restaurant for a late lunch it was already full of customers eating there; some arriving and others leaving. Some even mentioning how they have been customers of the place for years. Above the ordering counter was a large menu for one to study while the customers in front ordered their food. When my time came up to order, a young lady greeted me and took my order. I ordered a hot dog. A sloppy Joe, french fries, homemade banana pudding and a small drink of Iced Dr. Pepper. As the lady took the order, a gentleman prepared and brought it to the counter. I went to sit down at a table where I could see the inside of the restaurant and at the same time view through the front window the Historic Market Building. The hot dog was a quality yet simple hot dog served in a fresh and soft bun with mustard, chili, and onions. The French Fries were crinkle cut. The Sloppy Joe Sandwich was served on a Hotdog bun. The hot dog and fries were delicious. The chili was a bit too salty for me as well as the sloppy Joe. I would also have appreciated it in a burger bun. The Banana Pudding could have used more sugar. But the dining experience was very unique and worthwhile. And I discovered a great place to enjoy some time alone or with others.

As you can expect, I pulled over their parking lot and since it was around lunch time, I got out of my Lexus and went to try them out. A friendly gentleman behind the counter greeted me and took my order. The menu on the wall was not too specific on the kinds of hot dogs they had, so I asked if they had one with sauerkraut. The order taker immediately said no, not that one. So I asked for a hot dog with chili, mustard, and onion, which was on the menu, and asked for another one with ketchup, mustard, and relish. I also ordered some french fries and a fountain drink, which there was a sign that clearly stated: "No Refills." and "$2.07 for a refill." It didn't take long for my two hot dogs and fries to be ready. I took them to a table and ate them. The hot dogs themselves were the short kind which are soft inside, but they were nice and tasty. These as different from the ones sold at a hot dog cart which are long and firm inside. The buns were fresh and soft, and the fries were nice and crispy. This one was opened in 1984 by Gus Pappas after he took over the family business. Overall, I enjoyed the tasty hot dogs, but not so much the chili. Their fries were nice and crispy and freshly served. The atmosphere of the place was warm and nostalgic. The service was fast and the staff was friendly. I wouldn't mind eating here again when I'm around the area.

We also had a couple hot dogs - the manhattan and the Star City. French fries are crispy and battered and cooked perfect. My brother in law ordered the Gahbage plate - a favorite from Rochester, NY and it is not for the lite eater! A friend of mine and myself arrived at the restaurant in the middle of a rainy early morning. My friend was driving so he dropped me off in front of the restaurant while he went and parked. Nearby 505 Campbell Ave, there are plenty of on street parking. When I entered the restaurant I received a warm welcome from the husband and wife owners. They were both so nice and friendly, and were not shy to express how happy they were to have me eating at their restaurant. You could tell they enjoyed their business and their customers. The furniture and design of the place was from years past but very clean, with many booths in the center, a few small tables for two up front, and a counter with stools behind which was the kitchen up front next to the window and the coffee station in the back, serving the best local coffee: H&C Coffee. I sat next to the front window at one of the two chairs small tables. By then my friend arrived and also sat down. Our server, the wife and co-owner of the restaurant brought us the coffee with both ordered, and it was freshly made and tasted so hot and good. For breakfast we both had the Eddie Joe's Breakfast. My friend with sausage and I with bacon. At $6.99, they were a great deal for a breakfast now a days. While the husband and co-owner started to cook our breakfast, the wife was very friendly and hospitable and brought us coffee refills. When my breakfast arrived it contained Two Farm Fresh Eggs fried over easy, with around four strips of quality bacon cooked just right, and two buttered white toast with two grape jellies. Everything tasted amazingly delicious, with that home cooking flavor that one can only find in one of a kind restaurants. The friendly owners of the restaurant made us feel at home and we're also key in complimenting a relaxing breakfast dining experience. They now also have a fenced-in little patio with a picnic table and red umbrella to be able to sit down and enjoy your meal there. I arrived there on a hot summer day with temperatures in the 100 degrees. I had just eaten elsewhere, but stopped there to have some ice-cream. The building front was decorated in such a way that immediately captured the attention of anyone driving by, and so it did to me. While the owner prepared my milkshake a lady customer of the place arrived and we established conversation. She ended up being a relative of the owner of Brood Restaurant in Salem, Virginia. One of the last restaurants that I had written a Yelp review and was being featured in the app together with one of my photographs. She was delighted with by review just by reading the first few sentences and took a picture of it on my phone with her phone. What a small world I thought to myself. She suggested that next time I should try their pork barbecue. Another customer was also having the pork barbecue and also recommended it. When my milkshake was ready, I started drinking it with a thin straw the lady gave me, but it was so thick that I recommended she get thicker straws next time, but it was so good that I took the lid off and ended up drinking the cold and delicious milkshake. I highly recommend this ice cream shop and am looking forward to returning to try their now famous pork barbecue and maybe one of their Special Sundaes.

This family-owned and operated, local restaurant is owned by Fred Ellis, with over three decades of experience in the local restaurant industry. He is well-known for his commitment to the "low and slow" tradition of barbecue and for his hands-on approach to business ownership. Ellis originally opened this restaurant in December of 2006 after previously owning another much smaller restaurant with the same name on Plantation Road for nine years. The restaurant is conveniently located on the very popular Williamson Road, in Roanoke, Virginia, very close to the well known Coach & Four Restaurant. Its eclectic architectural design celebrates the restaurant's individuality and creativity. Inside, I found a clean and welcoming setting with a cozy atmosphere and a unique decor with a round fireplace in the middle of the dining area, and high ceilings in a section of the restaurant which also had a small stage. After handing me the menu, she took my drink order. I ordered an IBC Rootbeer, made with cane sugar. Since they didn't have the Sampler nor the Chicken BBQ at the moment, I ordered the Pork BBQ Platter, with the pork cooked with the North Carolina Vinegar BBQ sauce. It came with 3oz slaw and two side. For the sides, I ordered the baked beans and homemade fries. Their menu had a very limited selection of beer and wine. And I was also disappointed that a barbecue restaurant did not have Brisket on their menu. But what they did have, was amazingly delicious. Starting with their slaw that was so crispy and juicy with wonderful taste. It was one of the best slaws that I've had in a long time. Their fires were cut in-house from unpeeled potatoes, and freshly fried. The baked beans were also very tasty in a thick sauce. And the BBQ Pulled Pork was made with quality meats and cooked to perfection. For dessert I had their very popular Peach Cobbler, that happened to be their Cobbler of the day. I had it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, and deeply enjoyed it. Located off Williamson Road in the Northwest area of Roanoke, Virginia, this taqueria food truck not only makes great Mexican tacos, like its name implies, but other delicious items as well, such as Quesadillas, Burritos, Tortas, Carne Asada, Pollo con Tajadas, and such delightful Specials as Yuca con Chicharron, Tacos Dorados, and the Typical Honduran Dinner. After parking my pearl white Lexus in their small but very convenient parking lot, I headed towards the food truck which also had a closed-in patio with four picnic tables with large red umbrellas so customers could stay and dine there if they wished. Everything was so clean and organized. The food truck had its name together with their phone number in large print written on it. A small sign with its Hours of Operation, and a nice size sidewalk sign with its menu clearly displayed. When I arrived, Leticia, the wife and co-owner of the food truck opened its window and greeted me with a warm welcome. I returned the welcome by immediately speaking Spanish and making her comfortable by speaking her language. We engaged in small talk like it's tradition and she introduced me to her husband, cook and co-owner of the food truck. Then she took my order. I ordered the Yuca con Chicharron (Yuca with Pork Rinds). These are different than the pork rings found in the menus of American restaurants. Here the pork rinds also contained the pork meat as well. This was going to be an appetizer but the serving was so generous that it was a main entrée by itself. I also ordered some tacos with carnitas and with Chorizo. After all if this was a taqueria how could I leave without having tried some of their tacos. The wife together with a relative prepared the Yuca con Chicharron on one side of the interior of the food truck while the husband cooked the meat for the tacos on the grill located on the other side. To drink I ordered an Horchata, a very popular cold sweetened non-alcoholic beverage. This sweet, creamy, and spiced drink is made from white rice, water, cinnamon, often blended with milk, almonds, or vanilla. This particular one was the Honduran version which contained some other ingredients that made it so special and unique. When the food was ready and after paying with my credit card, I took it to one of the picnic tables which the husband had opened the large, red, umbrella, and started by eating the Yuca con Chicharron. It was so yummy and plentiful. It filled me up. I dranked the Horchata and took the tacos homand orgaze with me to eat at night. I highly recommend this food truck for its clean and organized arrangement, amazing variety of menu items, delicious food, and excellent customer service by a very friendly and hospitable couple and co-owners.
