Four years ago, I started a tradition to have pizza the night of moving to a new residence. This year I switched up after setting my eyes on Hot Wok. It was then I made an impulsive decision to make it Chinese. Later Caesar. It was my first night and I genuinely felt happy eating with chopsticks on the floor amongst the boxes. I do not know how I have lived in Gainesville for as long as I have and yet have never been to Hot Wok. It has been here for decades, and I have been remiss in not going at least once. Time to change that. Situated in North Gainesville, until about a year ago it was the closest Chinese take-out kind of place in town for me in North Gainesville. Walking in they have a couple of places to sit and eat if that is what you want, but most of their business is take-out, I surmise. I ordered the Singapore Chow Mein Fun and an order of curried chicken, and I was happy with both. The curry wasn't all that spicy, but still had a nice flavor to it. Both retained their heat for a long time as well, so if you are thinking of getting food from here as a take-out, it is a good thing because when you get home, you are pretty much guaranteed to still have a nice hot meal waiting for you in the bag. I figure I waited all of five minutes for my order to be completed, which is pretty darned fast. I will almost certainly be returning at some point for more. read more

Absolutely the best. There is nowhere else to go for Singapore noodles and General Tso's chicken. Best soups and soup crackers. Best dips and sauces. Even if you have to drive all the way across town, it is worth it. So good. read more

It may not look like much, but the food is awesome, and the prices are reasonable. We've tried most of the others, and they just don't compare. We like Ocean buffet, but it's all the way across town, so we don't get there very often. So give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

After reading so many reviews of various Chinese food locations in Gainesville, the reviews listed here seemed most appealing. I ordered delivery, and yes, the past reviews are right: it takes "forever". I waited about 50 minutes, which is longer than the usual waiting time. I chose the General Tso's chicken combination (comes with an egg roll and fried rice) and a side of shrimp fried rice, as I wasn't sure how much rice would be included in just the combination. Food finally arrived, and I dug straight in. My hunger took control and the food tasted amazing at first.. General Tso's chicken was delicious, and the serving size was ENORMOUS--for an average girl. I could hardly finish half of the chicken. I did however, finish the fried rice that came with it, but barely made a dent in the shrimp fried rice. Basically, the serving size was WELL WORTH IT compared to the price. The total came up to barely $13 and I felt like I ate $50 worth of food. Only complaints: fried rice was insanely greasy.. and yellow. (Not sure if fried rice is supposed to be yellow.) The complimentary egg roll wasn't good either. read more

Best fast service Chinese food in Gainesville. Their Moo Goo Gai Pan is delectable and their House Chow Fun is packed with tender, large cuts of protein and perfectly seasoned and sautéed noodles. Their fortune cookies are always fresh and never stale. If you order for pick uo the food can be ready in less than 20 minutes yet taste like its been slow cooking for hours. I read the solid reviews and decided to drop in for an early lunch. While waiting for my order I couldn't help but look around the restaurant and noticed just how dirty the dining room area is. The grime built up on the floor, the counters, under the tables, and around the trash can made it very clear that the place must not have been deep cleaned in quite some time. When the food came out, it was very good. I had a hard time eating it wondering what the kitchen must look like if the dining area was so poorly cleaned and ended up throwing most of it away. read more

The staff appear to be new to America, which means the food might be a little more authentic, but the food is heavily influenced by American Chinese Food styles. This is a classic "New York" style Chinese, but the food suggests that the owners really care about it. The fried rice is always excellently seasoned with small pieces of pork in it. The dishes always have a great balance of veggies and protein and the sauces and flavors are crafted superbly fresh with each dish. A simple, New York-style Chinese restaurant that mainly does a business in take-out and has not been updated or renovated probably for years, but had better quality and variety of food than most of the quick Chinese take-out places you find in shopping plazas. Their portions are larger than most, too. It seems to be regarded by most people I know--along with the Chinese place in the Publix shopping center at the intersection of 34th and Williston Road--as the best of its kind in town. I would say that South Garden is better all around, but given their location in Haile Plantation they are far out of my way. Pretty cheap delivery and always good. I've only gotten delivery but it's always fresh so I can't complain about the 45 min-1hr wait. Food's hot too so I know they're not lollygagging. Terrible. Ordered orange chicken, the chicken was dry, like jerky- my gf actually asked of there was chicken in it. Sauce was way too sweet, no spice. Bland, oily wonton soup. Tough crab Rangoon that tasted more like canned tuna, Honey chicken tasted like sugar and fake honey. Delivery was supposed to be 45 minutes but took over an hour. I ordered through bite squad and my was not hot and had hair in it I called both bite squad and the restaurant and they are blaming the issue on each other saying it's nothing they can do about this issue. The epitome of American Chinese food. It fits everything you look for when seeking out Chinese take-out: it's cheap, it's greasy, you get a lot of food, and it has all of the American favorites. I would advocate staying away form the chicken fried rice and instead opting for the pork fried rice. The chicken was chewy and flavorless, so you basically get fried rice with chunks that are too chewy to be comfortable with. The fried rice can definitely be better, but I am pretty snobbish when it comes to ordering fried rice in general. Overall: $5.60 for enough food to feed two (and a soda!) has my cheapness overlooking the imperfections that commonly surround American Chinese take-out. read more

I've always enjoyed the food here, but the last few times I've ordered delivery I've either gotten the wrong order entirely (orange chicken and beef with broccoli instead of general tsos and chicken and broccoli with three egg rolls) or in the most recent incident, I was charged for extra broccoli that didn't come on my order, but also was charged for at least one egg roll of three that I ordered and payed for but did not receive. The honeymoon is over for me ya'll.! My debit card got compromised last year & I have had to only pay in person because I still loved the food. I ordered the cream cheese wontons (as I have done before) They tasted a bit off & I did notice a dark spot at the bottom of each wonton but I thought that was just a really crispy spot but after 2 wontons I opened it up & there was a really dark sludge that must have been mold so I had to dump it all in the garbage disposer. The veggies were also soft & a bit off (they are usually crisp & bright colored). I have gotten so much more squeamish about food in the last few years.
