I am not sure if their air conditioning stopped working or if it was our booth in the corner of the restaurant, but it was extremely hot inside in early July. Even before someone ordered a hot pot dish, we were all sweating while trying to eat. Not the most comfortable setting for dinner. I ordered the tang su yook, which was sweet and sour fried pork with vegetables. The flavor was good and the portion size was adequate, although I finished it all and did not need to bring any home. Garlic & Ginger has been around in Gainesville for as long as I've been in Gainesville. So it's good to see them going strong every time I pass through town. Service is solid, with friendly servers that take your order quick and keep your drink glasses and banchan filled. The food itself is solid as well. As a local I've dined here a few times over the years and it's consistently good each time. Most recently, dined here for a quick lunch and had the kimchi pancake (a little greasy but good flavor, still crispy and came with three different accoutrements such as regular kimchi), tteok ramen (so flavorful -- The right amount of spicy heat....craving it as I type), and the bulgogi rice bowl (good old reliable bulgogi dish). Before Garlic and Ginger, Korean food in Gainesville was only available from a Korean American-owned Japanese restaurant that made several Korean items. Obviously, choices were very limited, and the quality was not good due to the lack of proper ingredients and cooking methods. Garlic and Ginger was likely one of the iconic establishments that transformed Gainesville's Asian food scene, offering a more authentic representation of cuisine and culture instead of serving Americanized dishes that did not exist in Asian countries. One thing I absolutely appreciate about Garlic and Ginger is its audacity to continue making authentic Korean dishes such as Gopchang Bokkeum (stir-fried beef intestine), Spicy Jokbal (spicy pork trotter), Haemul Jjim (steamed marinated seafood), and Soondae stew (blood sausage stew). After a Gators football win, my friends and I went to Garlic & Ginger for a celebratory dinner before we all parted ways. We were STARVING and thought it would be best to get away from the business around the stadium to go eat. We were right: Garlic & Ginger were able to sit and serve us right away when we got to the restaurant. Their staff is efficient and friendly, but also happy to suggest dishes to our hungry group without being pushy or trying to up-sell us. We ordered some beer towers to celebrate our football win. They keep cold and serve about 7 beers for the table. We ordered a Seafood Pancake, which I was not impressed with. It was soggy and came out lukewarm. It is filled with ingredients, but I wasn't pressed to eat it. The Beef Bulgolgi was delicious! The meat was tender and it had just the right amount of sweetness. My favorite dish is the Tteokbokki, or spicy rice cakes. The dish is HUGE and can feed 2-3 easily. There are dumplings and ramen noodles in addition to the rice cakes, and the sauce is sooo delicious! I soaked up every last drop of the sauce. I enjoyed our meal at Garlic & Ginger. We got some take-out during lunch: Kalbi and naengmyeon (cold noodles): Both were fine, kalbi meat was kinda tough, hard to pull off the bones. Noodles were good but wasn't sure if it was because we had to drive a while in a hot car to get home but there was this funky acidic bubbly aftertaste to the noodles. I love Korean food, and I'd say that the food here at Garlic Ginger is reasonable in terms of pricing and offers decent sized to where a person could order a couple of different entrees, sides, and then it mix it up for 3-4 people to enjoy. In terms of quality, the meat felt a little "too moist" but was very flavorful. The side, which was kind of like a pancake was incredibly delicious and the text was perfect. As a Korean, I am happy to find a pretty authentic Korean food restaurant here in Gainesville. If you enjoy spicy food like me, I recommend the jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup). It is huge and filled with all types of seafood like mussels, squid, and shrimp. For a dish to share with the table I recommend the nakbul (seafood and beef) hot pot which has a mixture of squid, shrimp, beef, and noodles. It feeds 3-4 people easily. I took some friends who were vegetarian and was pleased that the restaurant offered some options for them,such as the spicy tofu soup (instead of using the beef broth they just used water broth) and cold spicy noodles (we asked them not to include the beef broth in this as well). We went around 5:30 pm which was just enough to beat the dinner rush. They also have lower prices during their lunch hours on select items! read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. My Korean friend says, "this place is an embarrassment to Korean food and Korean people. They put broccoli in the japchae. This is wrong. The only Korean thing about this place is that some of the servers are Korean. I want to come here again just to see how bad it still probably is. Also, their kimchi sucks." As for myself, I am not Korean, I am Chinese. However, I have had a lot of Korean food, and have been here at least 10-15 times with other friends who are Korean. I can say with confidence that I have never had a good meal from this place. The meals I've had there were probably 3/5 at best. Service is average, environment is a 4/5 and the space is generally clean. Most recently, I went with a few friends and ordered the soondaeguk. It was so salty that it was inedible. I poured my entire tall glass of water into the soup, and it was still so salty that it was inedible. I borrowed my friend's cup of water and pour another half-a-cup into there, and it was STILL too salty. I eventually gave up and starved. My past experiences were not like this, but this one put the nail in the coffin. I won't be back. read more

Located in a strip shopping center this restaurant doesn't have the best ambience but the food and attentive servers make up for this. Our waitress helped us choose some apps that included the kimchi pizza, shrimp shumai, and a fried chicken dish. The kimchi pizza was like a big pancake with kimchi. Great flavor. The chicken was small pieces that were fried and coated iin a tangy sauce. Had to try the spicy tofu soup after si many Yelp comments about it. You can have it with seafood, mushrooms, or kimchi. It was amazing! Flavorful and spicy. Would definitely suggest this dish. Huge portion, too. We also had the fried rice, stir fried veggies, and short rib. All of the dishes were well prepared. We ordered the seafood pancakes and they were much larger than we anticipated but they were amazing. They're definitely worth the price point. My first experience with Korean food was when a place named Joa Korean BBQ popped up in town. They had gas grills set up at each table and you could cook your own meal right there. I didn't much care for those logistics as I tend to go out to eat to have someone do the work for me (even though I'd only be grilling the protein). Eventually they reopened as Garlic and Ginger, but I hadn't really gotten motivated to try them again. Now that we're in the age of #TrumpVirus aka #TrumpPlague aka #Coronavirus and take-out is the only restaurant option for at least the near future I ordered a family meal. For only around $50, I got a pan with spring rolls, fried won tons, beef short ribs, some sweet potato (I believe) noodles with stir-fried veggies, a spicy pork dish, and a savory dish of chicken chunks outranking General Tso's by far (sorry, China), and a quart of seafood soup with mussel, octopus, a savory broth, and silken tofu. On top of these entrees I got a large container of sticky rice, and much as you might in the restaurant got a couple of multi-part containers with sides including kimchee, a mix of potato and fish cake, a sort of slaw with cabbage, onion, and stem broccoli in a cream sauce, some of what looked like sauteed greens of some sort. For the sake of safety, upon picking up my order I saw the management rearranged the store so that the front doors were open to the air and sun (good for helping get some sunlight in when it's bright outside to help sanitize), and the cashier was wearing a mask and had hand sanitizer close at hand for customers. Don't ask me for the Korean names of these delicious dishes, I couldn't tell you. All I can report is that these are delicious and will last me several more lunches and dinners in these strange times. read more

I've dined here numerous times for dinner and always had fantastic meals but it never dawned on me to have lunch here. Surprise! On a recent lunch visit with friends I discovered they have a very diverse and reasonably priced lunch menu! Everything you could want is on the menu and some of the items are their dinner offerings but a slightly smaller version at a cheaper price. We got very lucky and had a wonderful server Daniel? that happily took his time to answer any questions we had. Through out our meal he was always attentive to our refills and taking used plates away. Some of the items we enjoyed was the shrimp udon soup, beef bulgogi, pork katsu, spring rolls and shrimp shumi. No one was disappointed in the quality or quantity of the food. I've been to G&G countless times and it's my favorite place in town for Korean food!! Today I got the kalbi and spicy tofu soup combo for $18.70. Two of my favs and had plenty to take home! Take time to look through the whole menu, because I just saw the combo deal today after eating here many times before. I think the kalbi entree by itself is kind of pricey. I usually get their seafood pancake for appetizer which is made perfectly compared to other seafood pancakes I tried elsewhere. I highly recommend the KALBI here. It comes on a sizzling plate and the marination of the meat is divine. I don't know if the sweetness comes from honey or brown sugar but the kalbi is just so darn good. They have a variety of "pot stews". My favorite is the spicy tofu soup. You can choose between seafood, kimchi, mushroom, or beef. I like the seafood one. Or try the combination spicy tofu soup. The soup comes out very hot, so be careful!! I burnt my mouth before because I was so excited to eat it. I want to try the Kalbi soup- beef short rib next time. As for noodles, I've only tried their ja jang myeon- black bean and pork. Its good! They have many other noodle options. The menu has alot of items overall. If you want to share a meal, try the hot pot options which feeds 2-3 people. Their dduk bok gi- spicy rice cake dish is huge and made to be shared as well. The dduk bok gi comes in a pot and has dumplings and noodles in it. They do have a lunch menu until 2:30pm and the items are priced less. read more

My go-to and favorite Korean restaurant in Gainesville! We came to Garlic & Ginger on a Thursday night and were kindly greeted by the staff. My bf and I wanted to try something new and our waiter suggested the flaming pig special - spicy stir fried pork with veggies. I asked if we could have it mild and it was the perfect level and SO delicious. A lil pricey but worth it. Besides that, we always get the classic spicy tofu soup but we also wanted another dish. We noticed a combo deal of both the kalbi and spicy tofu soup for about ~$12 and I'm glad we got it. All of the dishes we ordered were great for 2 to share.
