A mother and daughter are waited on by a sincere, but fast-paced, quick-talking attendant. She is answering the phones, taking orders, and ensuring all the pick-ups get to the right person. The sizzles and scrapes coming from the open kitchen clue you in to their know-how and speed. A man in brand new Gator tennis shoes walks in, and the tattoo on his arm hangs as he looks up to the pictures of the food above the counter. Mandarin tidbits and discussion bounce off the walls, in the back, more clinks and scrapes and smells emanate from this Asian hotspot! A lady in a cowboy hat, red hair and a tie-dye walks in and orders her food, and the attendant can be heard saying "Hey baby, how you been?!", phone rings, sizzle, door opens...Friday night at China Wok is lit!! I got the sesame chicken and a few egg rolls...I know already how good it will taste, and how much food I will get! I've gotten food from here on occasion since the late 90s. Their appetizers and entrées are for the most part are solid. Chicken wings are particularly good, in part because the wings themselves are not from the scrawny, seemingly "dwarf" chickens that other nearby restaurants like Piesanos and supermarket delis like Publix offer. The price point, too, is appealing. Today I got some hot and sour soup, imitation crab aka "krab" fried wontons, garlic chicken (8 pieces + veggies like bell pepper and onion), fried chicken wings (4), and hot-and-sour soup. All were fresh and delicious. Only reason I give them 4 instead of 5 stars is that my mom some months back bought lunch for me from them. Solid concept, except that my mom seems to think I need to lose weight (not so much), and thus ordered some exceedingly plain veggie-only dishes, namely veggie lo-mein and some meat-free entrée, and also paradoxically ordered their fried shrimp. The shrimp were just soggy and sad, but the veggie dish was probably the worst I've ever had. Flavorless, dismal, grim are the descriptors that came to mind. Aside from that, if you play on their strengths, the experience will be good, in my opinion. read more

I find it somewhat difficult to rate a restaurant like this because your expectations never can be too high with a standard (and self-proclaimed "New York-style") Chinese take-out place. That said, I tried it one night because I'd been playing soccer and it was nearby and had pretty good Yelp reviews. The approach is typical, a simple storefront with the featured dishes photographed and on a back-lighted display above the counter, printed menus revealing a far more varied list options laying on that counter. The place is clean, sparkling, even, if somewhat forlorn-looking for its lack of much decoration. The staff are . . . business-like at best. Not very friendly and do not seem to speak much English. With a bit more effort they could at least come off as nicer. I lived in San Francisco's Chinatown while I was in college, so I am well aware that Chinese culture doesn't foster the same overly-friendly business approach that American retail culture does, but if you're running a business in the American South it just might help to not seem nearly rude. Certainly if I moved to Guangzhou and opened a shop, I'd research local culture and customs and try to fit in a bit. The food is . . . ok. I had the Kung Pao Chicken and the "small" serving was enough for me despite being pretty hungry. Their prices are also more than reasonable and the amount of meat included was generous, though it wasn't the best cut of chicken, that's for sure. However, it was too salty and still lacked the robust flavor your expect for a kung pao dish. Also, they lack a fountain soda machine and sell sodas by the can, which seems a nearly-immature approach for a restaurant in business for years. I mean, really: can't you contract with a vendor and do this right? Up-marking sodas and selling puny cans to me bespeaks both laziness and a desire to nickel and dime your customers whilst not providing very good service. This place is not very good. We ordered the number 1 on the house specialties list. For the seafood, they used more pollock than anything else. Didn't see that on the menu. Didn't see any lobster either though it was the first ingredient listed. The types of veggies were poor also, except the broccoli and the few bean sprouts. which was all right. Here in The South- trying to find unique dishes at just your run-of-the mill take-out place is like trying to find a full set of teeth at a Square Dance. Often I will try to push the already angry cook to make certain dishes spicy, make exceptions, substitutions, or create items that are not even on their menu with existing ingredients. They were happy to make Beef and String Beans for me, and to actually make it spicy. At this location there is Beef Chow Fun shown in the photo, but not listed on the menu with a price. They also have a dish that I have not seen often called "Szechuan Wonton." Which was definitely NOT the chili and garlic infused oil covered, steamed wontons that I am used to getting in NYC. It is deep fried pork wontons covered in spicy red jello with some peas and carrots thrown in. If I did not get so sick from eating here, I would give it three stars. If I am brave, I may try again someday. read more

This is the local walk-in Chinese take out joint we go to near us. Their food is pretty good. No greasy and tasty. When you go, you can ask for a 'fresh mustard' they make their own home made mustard they store it in the fridge in the front of the store. You have to ask for it..very spicy..mmm goood..or you'll have to use the normal packaged mustard. Try the Garlic Shrimp and Beef with Beans..and my favorite Kung Pow Chicken. For the price you can't go wrong. $6 get's you a dish of your choice, fried rice and an egg roll. read more

This is the ONLY Chinese Takeout in Gainesville I'll eat at, and the sad part is, I'm not an overly picky person. I really want to like Chinese food and I love their culture, so I'm a pretty easy sell. All other places in Gainesville are so good. China Wok is pretty delicious though. Unfortunately, their fried rice is yellow (something I've never seen before moving to Gainesville), but the ingredients are prepared with care (fresh and carefully chopped and flavorful). They actually use good cuts of chicken and it has a fresh texture (not overly puffed with corn starch). This place also has a whole original sezchuan section. This is good New York Style Chinese. It always seems fresh and not oily. The meals are not over cooked or re-cooked. At least I think that is what he said. He spoke too quickly to know for sure. When I asked if I had China Wok he said "order" again. I asked if it was China Wok a second time and he hung up on me. China Wok seems to be a step above most Chinese takeout places in Gainesville, though it's not all that different. The quality of the food, in my own experience, is higher and less greasy. The service is swell and quick and I love their lunch specials--you get an incredible amount of food for a very small price AND they still have the specials on Saturdays! Unfortunately I cant leave zero stars. This has been our go-to Chinese place for the last 6 years. Mostly because it's close to our house. Let me start off by saying we don't favor NY STYLE but a more traditional style Chinese food. For the price and portions they always delivered decent food. However we've noticed a steady decline in the quality of the food. This most recent time will be our last. Our chicken and broccoli tasted bland and the chicken cuts seemed odd. The special fried rice barely had meat in it. All the meat was cut tiny. Lastly while eating it I tasted something that made me gag. I spit it back out and found a hair in a nasty piece of "meat" that tasted rancid. I immediately went to throw up. My family all stayed still and everyone lost their appetite. I was tempted to keep the mystery "meat" to have it checked out but my BF was so disgusted he threw everything away. Needless to say, we will never order from here again.
