In winter, Venice is a great visit. Why? All the Italian designers and by osmosis all the other stores go on tempting after Xmas sales. Here, the sales are not crazy like in Milano or Roma; there's actually more inventory relative to customers in Venice. And they give you cocktails and espresso in most Italian designer shops like Gucci, Prada, D&G....blahblahblah. A second reason? The Carnivale and the Venice Film Festival happen in winter. Across from a pretty well-appointed Hermés shoppe, the Bonvecchiati built in 1790, is one of the oldest in Venice. It's one of my fave finds because it's not super expensive, it's clean and well maintained and it's central. It's an old hotel so I would not expect American standards here. If you do, you will be vastly disappointed as almost every hotel in Venice is old, inside and out. This hotel though has modern rooms as well (not worth the upgrade because Venice is not cheap to begin). Plus the cheaper your rate, the smaller your room so look at options before you book. Remember this is an old hotel, there will be shabby cramped rooms for visitors who want a bargain. I see Yelpers on here complaining about the size of the rooms, there are larger ones also, ya gotta shell out for those like we did.
What I like most about this hotel is it's close to the center of Venice, the majestic St. Marks Square, close to all the hot shopping, walking distance from the water taxis and it has it's own taxi drop- you can take a taxi from wherever you are in the lagoon or islands to this hotel. But wait, another secret (not anymore) awesome feature is, this hotel is a bit hidden away from the crowds that go through the Piazza San Marco, super key to a restful stay.
Breakfast is hugely filling and delicious, a standard Italian breakfast can fill me up through 4pm sometimes.
Visits: a few
Tip: If you like modern Italian furniture, the gilded Palace Bonvecchiati on the other side of this hotel is grander, not like the Hotel Danieli grand but grand just the same. There are suites at this hotel also that come with a grand price, LOL. The Hard Rock Venezia, about 15 shops down the street was actually our most fun getaway, if you want something different from Venetian food. BTW, the guys on the Piazza San Marcothat get pigeons to land on your shoulders are not free, LOL. Cruise ships descend onto Venice and unleash all sorts of characters into the city who get drunk like a frat party. Not fun. read more
