Loved the room we were in! Friendly desk service, classy decor, but the fireplace's chimney seemed to need to be serviced because the smoke kept coming in our room and that was not fun. Also the hotel should offer reservations to the associated restaurant, especially on holiday weekends. We checked in on valentine day and the restaurant was fully booked, then closed the following day. It was very disappointing because the food was one of the main reasons we reserved the room Also the bath tub was dirty, we had to clean it before we used it-kinda gross- and the toilet paper was very poor quality and only had like six sheets of toilet paper on it and there was only one more roll: housekeeping staff needs to step it up read more

Posted a review the other day, and I'm still staying here, but my star review is going downhill. I went to take a shower and there was hot water in the bathtub but none in the shower. So I had to wash my hair leaning over in the bathtub and try to take a shower Standing in the bath tub using the bathtub faucet. I wanted to have a little ice for my evening cocktail, but the ice machine is broken. I went down to have coffee and they said biscotti at 8 AM this morning and no one got there till about 8:20. I really enjoyed our experience here! We stayed in building D on the bottom floor, and we had a really big room with a nice tub, sauna, fireplace, patio, couch, tv, mini fridge and microwave. The place was cozy and comfortable. The bed was comfortable and the outdoor patio and Adirondack chairs were wonderful to watch the ocean, sunset and stars. It was not a fancy place but not disheveled either. It was very comfortable. The shower looked newly redone and the water pressure was fantastic. The temperature of the water went from cold to scalding hot in 3 centimeters so that took some finessing. The towels were larger and more plushy than a normal hotel. There are also no fans so if you need air movement, bring a portable one. The lobby had coffee and ice and some snacks too. It was next door to a market and across the street from a yummy pizza place with beer on tap. There was a nice walking trail with some views and it led to a nice cafe. This is such a beautiful place! Our dog-friendly room was very spacious and had a soaking tub overlooking the breathtaking views of the ocean. There is a lovely walking trail right outside that takes you on a scenic path to all the little shops and restaurants. There is a wonderful high-end restaurant in the vicinity called Vue Coastal Kitchen, as well as a mouth-watering BBQ stand that is only steps away. On the weekends, there is a fantastic craft market with handmade goods. We cannot wait to come back! read more

I contracted COVID and tried to cancel my reservation. The night before, no on answered or returned a message. The day of, the manager at first stonewalled me about a refund, then offered a mere 50%, totally ignoring that I was already going to face hardship due to loss of work and was already upset about missing my anniversary. You would think a hotel's priority would be keeping the guests safe, but apparently it's squeezing every last dollar they can. Astoundingly immoral. read more

The location is great! There were a few issues we we did not like about the hotel. 1. They would not clean our room, due to Covid-19(even on request) 2. They have fireplaces but dont offer or sell wood. 3. The television is the size of a desktop monitor. Other than that all was good. I would like to say there is a ton of potential but nothing is quite right. Paint on the floor, light switches without knobs, switches that went to nothing, screws & nails left out, phone doesn't work, holes in linens but the worst part was the roof leak. Water in our room. The hotel was "full" so we got a bucket. The desk clerk was embarrassed but the manager was too busy to even call to apologize. I find that extremely unprofessional. We had to spend the night with water literally dripping into a bucket. We got a discount but an apology would have been nice. Warning: Ask first before planning to go to the restaurant. What you see on the website is most definitely NOT what you get. We drove 4 hours to get there, and when we got there, they said our room was ready. Everything was absolutely disgusting and there were hundreds of dead flies in the room, especially in the window ledges. The room was incredibly dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. The bed was filthy and the frame was broken, creaking and cracking. The neighbors next-door blasting their TV and had stolen our patio furniture from our deck. Management had US go retrieve it back from them while they glared at us through the window. Really awkward and inappropriate. The room and the bed were so filthy that we didn't want to touch anything, and most definitely would not spend the night in there. As it was a Friday afternoon, there was nothing available anywhere near and we had to drive two hours back down the coast and rent a room in Petaluma. Completely ruined our trip we had planned. Stayed here last year and was happy with the stay.....this year...not so much. I was disappointed with the "winter rate" for starters. Next, among the amenities listed was a hairdryer (so, I didn't bring one) and there was not one in the room. Coffee maker was dirty with a used coffee filter left in the brewer. No kleenex in the room, (just like Motel 6). Lastly, they advertise a fireplace in the room...we had to ask for a log and got a little one that lasted barely an hour...so we asked if we could have one more and they said, "yes, for $4.00 apiece" !! What good is a fireplace as an amenity if they don't supply the wood?? For almost $200 a night, should they supply the fire logs?...Fortunately, their not the only game in town. read more

I have stayed at the hotel on two separate trips in 2018 and both times had a wonderful experience with the large clean rooms and most of all the amazing views. The staff is super friendly and helpful. And the bonus was the restaurant, Vue Kitchen, next door that has some of the most delicious food. Cute room and nice view but the mattress was awful, could not sleep on our getaway weekend because of it. The shower is bad too. You see a middle-aged married couple walking down the sidewalk, coming from a crafts festival, with bags and cameras in their hands, walking towards your hotel lobby, and actually in your parking lot walking towards the lobby, in the middle of Thanksgiving weekend in the middle of the afternoon and in your opinion we are potential hooligans and vandals ready to sneak around your hotel causing damage?? And you are so concerned you have to leave your lobby and pop out from behind a car and confront us? And in your opinion "What do you want?" is somehow your version of politely introducing yourself as "Manager" and politely requesting to know if we are "guests or intended guests" (which certainly did not happen). And when we said we were hoping to look at a room, I'm not sure how much more clear we could have been that we were "intended guests". And even if we said we were just looking around, almost every hotel I've ever been to has been happy to show off their hotel to potential patrons. I've NEVER had someone instead tell me to "get off their property" or they were calling the sheriff. read more

All of them has spacious jacuzzi, nice bed, patio, spectacular view, fireplace, ocean breeze...and of course the heated floor!!! I would totally recommend this place for a quick stop, get away, romantic mood, or just to relax. It's far from everything and perfect if you want to escape from reality of busy life. Wow wow wow!! What a life saver Chris was!! We decided to do a camping trip this week (10/21-23). We planned it out, we did the shopping trip for tents, mattresses, etc. too bad we forgot about cold weather. We froze our butts off! We woke up and decided to go look for a warm bed for the next night. We drove up into Gualala. We had previously stayed up the road a little at a different hotel but they had no vacancy. So we went back down to Hotel Breakers. I went into the lobby and there was our hero, Chris. He was so kind and understanding and also happened to have a room available. It was a nice room, incredible view, nice bathroom and close to a few good places to eat in Gualala. Would definitely come back and stay there again! Chris is the best!! read more

The GF who does all the deep dives for our road trips picked this one out for the views. Hanging out in the room with the sound of the ocean and the views of the river and beach was pretty cool. A little noisy haring kids above us and the ceilings are a little thin, Recommend picking top floor if that kind of thing tends to annoy you. Rooms are clean and everything works. A tad expensive for this far up the coast but whatever. There's some great eateries right in town. Recommend the Seafood Shack fer sure. read more

Need a break? The breakers will fit the bill. This is our second (maybe third) stay here. I like the place and the staff is great. We haven't had the continental breakfast because we get food from the little grocery store next door and we have a fridge and microwave...so... This trip we stayed in the Cape Cod room and it is my least favorite. It is an older hotel so I wasn't expecting anything fancy but it doesn't have the same quaint feel as the others. It does have the same amenities so overall I have no complaints. Great for a getaway because it is so relaxing and the rooms are right on the water. Opening the window to hear the waves makes for a wonderfully restful night. The town has a couple of cute restaurants and a short drive up the lovely winding road to Mendocino will give you even more options. read more

This lovely place exceeded my expectations and I was definitely craving a great experience. I come up to the Mendocino Coast a lot to get away from it all and let go of stress. I fInd the ocean waves soothing snd meditative. Well, I was so happy to have a room where I could look right out at the ocean from my bed! Or sit out on the deck, watching the waves while I ate my meals. The rooms all come with a fridge and microwave, so I brought a lot of food with me, which enabled me to relax more and take it easy. The beef was very comfortable with super soft sheets. The towels are thick and luxurious. Everything about it was perfect. This place is a real gem! read more

This is the second time we have stayed here. The staff is very friendly and Vivian, the front desk person, was both sweet on the phone and in person. She really went out of her way to make our stay pleasant, even delivering fresh flowers to our room. Aaron the assistant manager was incredibly helpful as well. We stayed in the Denmark Room which was basically a suite with a private sauna and a jacuzzi tub in the window overlooking the ocean. We had a balcony and the bed was quite comfortable. The only reason we are giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is a little older and could use some updating but while we were there they had people working in rooms and on painting the outside. We would come back here and consider it now our "go to" location to stay when at the north coast. read more

What a rip off.....$190 for a room which provided 2 towels (we were three) and the worst coffee I've tasted since visiting Minnesota in 2001. You would think with a fine restaurant next door, this would not be an issue. And the beds....absolutely terrible, saggy. My husband and I chose to stay at The Hotel Breakers in Gualala on February 25th because it looked so nice from the outside and we'd seen the balconies from the water side trail on a previous visit to Gualala, and thought it would be fancy and nice. It turned out our upstairs room (D-12) was pretty run-down except for a few upgrades that didn't match the older décor and weren't enough to make the room as classy as it should be and the layout was poor. Some nice features were the large shower with extra hand-held sprayer and the heated floors. Even with the nice view and good location, the following list of downsides actually caused us to shorten our stay and go elsewhere for our second night. There was no USB charge station anywhere in the room, so we plugged in a laptop and charged our cell phones off of that. There was no log for the fireplace, so that advertised amenity was moot. There was only one smoke/carbon detector on the wall near a corner of a lower ceiling section of a high ceiling room, which is totally illegal. Even though this was not an ADA room, the small distance between the entrance opening and the corner of a large desk (see my pic holding a 15" laptop across the opening), does not meet any codes for minimum access. As shown in other pictures, the bathroom sinks are nice, but the counter they're on is cheap/scuffed up and is open at the bottom to show all the pipes and stuff (plus dust/dirt on slats). The lights above sinks are way too bright and my husband is an electrician who usually says too much light is never enough - except in this case! The 2 bulb (one bulb missing in a 3 bulb fixture) is in terrible shape. Someone obviously smoked in the bathroom as we could smell it after taking a shower even though they left the window wide open before we checked in. The main blind in the room was cheap metal with tangled strings and it didn't lay flat on the window sill, plus one of the windows would not stay up so we had to prop it with something to keep it open for fresh air and to hear the ocean. The bed had a plastic cover over the mattress so a crinkly noise was heard with any movement and the mattress was in bad shape - slumped in middle and springs were felt on edges, plus there was no box spring duster - very tacky. The extra pillow in the cupboard had no case - so I would not even use it for a knee pillow. I don't think the floors were clean or carpet vacuumed under the nice large chairs, ottoman and table. I found hair balls on the heated wood floor. I am sorry to say I will never stay at this hotel again or recommend it to anyone I know. It is sad to see there is no real pride taken in the property, which is a loss to the entire Gualala Community. We drove on to Elk and stayed at the Elk Cove Inn which was fantastic in all respects!!! read more

I took my girl friend here for Valentine's Day weekend. Wasn't sure what to expect after reading the mediocre review of the Japan room, which is where we stayed. We were pleasantly surprised as it was clean, comfortable, and had nice decor. Didn't see any signs of neglect on the part of the cleaning staff. It was roomy, and the jacuzzi tub was clean and inviting. Yes, there is a path that runs behind the entire Inn, but it was still rather private and quiet. The view is wonderful; the Inn is set right on the mouth of the Gualala River and you can see that as well as the huge surf crashing on the beach. The staff was courteous and friendly. Although the room had a microwave, mini-fridge, and wet bar, it did not have anything in the way of beverages or snacks. So bring your own booze and food, because there's really not too many options in town, especially at night! read more

Driving North on Hwy 1 between Bodega Bay and Ft Bragg, we stopped to check out this hotel on the Gualala River just a few yards from the Pacific. We were greeted by Rhonda, a very nice lady. I stayed here over the Easter holiday in Building D, the Denmark Room. I received an email confirmation about a month previously stating the room rate for this premium room with ocean views was about $175/night. My main issue was with the front desk clerks who were unprofessional and indifferent. Upon check-in, for some reason, I was given the keys for the Denmark room, even though I specifically requested the England room. Since it was in the same building as the England room, we decided not to make a big deal out of it. The décor is a bit dated and the sound insulation is minimal. Being in the lower unit, I could really hear footsteps from above and voices, as though they were in the room with me! The continental breakfast basically consisted of store-bought (ie: bulk store quality) breakfast pastries, instant oatmeal, cold cereals and bagels. Upon check-out, I was surprised to see that I was charged about $25 more than quoted in the email and was told it was because it was a holiday weekend. When I showed the clerk my email confirmation, she said it was irrelevant. Given the premium prices they charge and the subpar customer service, I won't be back. Don't recommend...stay somewhere else! read more

Breakers Inn is a wonderful little hotel situated on the beach in the little town of Gualala (pronounced wah-LA-la). Most rooms have a direct view of the ocean, and include a nice sun deck for chilling out and an in-room jacuzzi. Rooms avg about $220/night for a non-holiday, summer wknd rate. Rooms are clean and have a nice "mendocino" rustic feel to them. Patrons are greeted with a complimentary bottle of champagne and wine. the premise is nicely decorated with running water fountains and plenty of flowers and colorful landscaping. Breakers Inn is within walking distance of many forest and beach trails. minor gripes.... * use of jacuzzis are prohibited after 9pm * rooms do not have CD players * rooms do not have DVD players, but one can rent one for $5 * newspapers are not delivered to front door, but are available at front desk * decks are furnished with cheap, plastic furniture... and lack an umbrella for shade the town of Gualala has many art galleries, restaurants, spas and other "small town" shops. one can easily spend a day walking, shopping or basically do nothing. I am very torn about what review to give for this place. I have stayed in the Deluxe corner rooms a few times. We first started visiting in 2005 and it was lovely. It seems with time that they have not put too much money into keeping it as amazing as our first visit. I sometimes could hear the neighbors or the people above us walking around. The deluxe corner rooms have gone from a 5 star to a 4 star in the last 4 years. Now the reason for the final rating. I was married in Gualala in 2006. On my wedding night I stayed in the Japan room. We paid over $300 a night. (They have since lowered their prices.) We chose the room for the private spa tub by the window with a romantic view. There was a small PATH outside our window that the construction workers were using! People walking outside our jacuzzi window!! There was no way we could bath in the morning or during the day. And I was concerned that even at night someone could just walk up and look in our window. The room was also very noisy. We could hear every flush or shower that was taken in the room(s) above us. I would give the Japan room experience as low a rating that I could. So in the end that is why I gave Breakers three stars. I have had numerous 4 star experiences but the 1 star wedding night weighs heavy on my opinion. read more

I would have given 5 stars based on most of my stay and most of the staff - however, on my last day I fell ill and the front desk worker on this morning was very condescending. After trying to eat something else because she refused to replace empty items at the included continental breakfast (milk, basic stuff,etc), I became sick and was unable to stand up for 2 hours, making me go over the check out time of 1100. I called and asked if I could extend my checkout to 1:00pm and she automatically refused. Hotel guests cannot check in until 4:00pm but have no buffer if emergencies arrive. I paid a lot of money in their restaurant and for the room, staying for 3 nights. The room was nice but not so great that I had to be treated like crap while I was down The portly front desk woman is a rude, unhappy person with no notion of how to lead a karmic life. read more
