A Charming Relic That Needs Some Attention Where do I start? Yes, the building is old, and the rooms are small and somewhat claustrophobic. But much of that could be improved fairly easily by getting rid of the garage-sale version of "turn-of-the-century" decor, much of which is oversized for the tiny spaces. A few suggestions: Put the sink near the bathroom rather than on the opposite side of the room. Remove the nasty carpeting--I suspect there may be original hardwood floors underneath. Provide luggage stands. Replace the heavy fabric curtains and cheesy valances, which make the rooms feel even more closed in, with simple wooden blinds or shutters. And replace the cheap pull-down fabric shades. The disproportionately large ceiling fan, which was connected to the lights, also turned on spontaneously in the middle of the night. Wi-Fi was poor to nonexistent. Most importantly, there was no chilled, filtered drinking water. Since the hotel doesn't provide it, perhaps they could make arrangements with the Metropole Hotel across the street to allow guests to fill their water bottles there. We did this anyway, especially because the tap water on Catalina is not particularly pleasant and isn't something many visitors want to drink. The frustrating thing is that so much could be done to make these rooms more comfortable and appealing without spending a fortune. It makes you wonder why the owners haven't addressed some of these very basic issues. And at $260 a night, it's simply not worth it. I would pass on this so-called "charming relic" and look elsewhere. read more

HORRIBLE UNPROFESSIONAL customer service. They threw us out and refused service because we asked for what we paid for and wanted an explanation of what they advertised as Patio View. The employee on the right gave us the wrong room. We reserved the Patio View and we got no view. The employee on the left who told us her name was Nancy (who knows) came and told us we had the wrong room and gave us the Patio View. BUT when I asked what the Patio View was and why we were given the other room with no view, Nancy decided to start arguing with me and told me that they could refuse service to me and not honor my reservation. On the summer peak season they refused service bc I asked for clarification on what they advertised. Hard to find a hotel where the employee would argue at the top of her lungs after they've made a mistake. Clearly made a mistake bc Nancy was telling the employee how to distinguish Patio View room. I've never been thrown out of a hotel for complaining about what I paid for. Don't ever go here. Bbq grill not working, jacuzzi not working, and bedbugs from what Google review says. read more

No one is at the reception desk after 6:00 p.m. The TV didn't work for two days because there was no Wi-Fi reception, and they couldn't fix it! In 2026, we weren't able to watch TV during our stay!  The instructions said to text if we needed assistance, but no one responded. Very disappointing. NOT highly recommended. Honestly, it should be called a motel, not a hotel! Pros: Convenient location, and they hold your luggage after checkout. Staff is nice! read more

Book this hotel if you want - no WiFi - when I asked about it the front desk told me that the wifi doesn't work in that part of the hotel - having a tv that does not work - lukewarm showers - again told that "yeah, the hot water never lasts - a plunger next to the toilet - figured out pretty quickly why there was a plunger by the toilet - a cottage advertised as next to the pool- there is NO pool - like to walk to the front desk and see the front desk woman having her feet up on the counter looking at her phone ( though she did sit up and get off the phone when she saw me) - rent the cottage if you like having a room with just a bed - not even a chair! - having no housekeeping - we only had two towels for a two room cottage - was told have to come up and get more I truly must say this is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at - I really don't understand the good reviews - do not book the cottage read more

We love Catalina so much, and have stayed at multiple hotels, so here is my review of Hotel Catalina aka Studio 9 Hotel Catalina: Location: 4.3/5 - super close to the boardwalk/beach/restaurants, but up a slight hill (we enjoyed walking up and down the hill for exercise, but might be tougher for older folk) Hotel room: 3.9/5 - we knew we were booking a small room because we were only in Catalina for 24 hours. That said, we were on the top floor/corner unit which was very nice, the queen bed was comfy, the room wasn't the cleanest, the bathroom could use a little work, but that's expected in the old hotels of Catalina. Did not have AC (which we knew) but the ceiling fan and windows being open kept the room cool enough to sleep in at night. Again, only there for 24 hours, the room did its job. Staff: 5/5 - we met a cute older lady who lived at the hotel/had a key, we assumed that was the owner of the hotel. She was very nice. And then the front desk lady was very nice as well. The only downside is that there is no hotel staff all 24 hours. The staff arrived at 9am and left at 8pm - we arrived at 8am on the island so we had to take our stuicases with us to the beach since no staff was there to unlock the front door for us to store our luggage. Totally fine, but I can see this being an issue for other guests. Hotel: 3.8/5 - the hotel is old (just like 90% of the hotels on Catalina, which we expected, and are totally fine with, as we aren't in the hotel much since we are out diving all day) - hotel has no elevator (we knew) so this might be tough for old folk. No "secure" place to store luggage like the other hotels, however we did leave our luggage in the lobby along with other guests and it was fine. The hotel mentions a jacuzzi, but it's boarded up, so technically no jacuzzi. The courtyard area wasn't very inviting/clean when we were there so we did not relax over there. We did like the front porch patio though, and the top floor balcony for a little view. There is no daily housekeeping, which we don't mind, but I know other guests might. Pricing: 4.4/5 - the pricing was definitely way more affordable than other hotels, which we appreciated, especially since we were there for only 24 hours. Would we stay here again? Good: the lady that lives there was always friendly and welcoming. So was Nancy. The others not so much. The location is an easy walk to town if you don't mind a hill. Bad: we had to wait 5 hours before allowed up to our rooms even though they were ready and we'd been told we could check in early. Rooms are dated. Bed was soft. The wi fi kept going out. Catalina is a lovely town but it was very crowded with tourists and the golf carts are $70 an hour! still we enjoyed our little vacation. read more

It's was fine for what we needed which was a place to sleep for our weekend trip. We stayed in the Cottage A 2 room unit which is right next to the main lobby building. The rooms and beds are pretty small, the shared bathroom in the Cottage until is also pretty small, but since the majority of our trip was spent outside it wasn't that big a deal. Some of the pros of Hotel Catalina is the location. It is a little bit up hill, but everything in the town is within walking distance of the hotel. From the ferry port it was probably a 10 minute walk to get here. And the restaurants and bars are just right down the hill. Some cons are the building is starting to show it's ago, we visited during the winter so the rooms get really cold, thankfully they did provide a portable heater for us to use. The beds feel kind of worn out, so if you're visiting Catalina and looking for a place to relax with some luxury, this place isn't it. read more

Not bad but not great. Keep in mind it's an old building, the front desk receptionist told us it was built in 1890 and you can tell. First the hotel (which you can see the sign from the ferry) is not far from anywhere, I mean nowhere is far on the island. The walk was ok, kinda hard to roll over the stones and weave through the crowd. The hotel is up a hill so of walking uphill is tough, order a ride ( we used Ride Circuit very cheap). I didn't see any ramp to get in the lobby. Check in was easy and the lady was very nice and comfortable to talk to. The building has a stale old smell, looks old and outdated/vintage depends on your opinion. We had a queen room, the room is very small, the bathroom is even smaller I could only rotate. The bed was very comfortable though, there's no AC but we went in April so the weather was perfect. The walls are thin, we can hear people talking and my husband went to get ice and can hear people "baby making" lol. The king size bed for our needs much better and that room is bigger, has a space with a table and chairs. The shower was even smaller I had to stand in the corner. The place is t the cleanest, but as long as the bed was clean I didnt care, I was only there to sleep. Overall it served it purpose, it has its charm. Worth the money for an island stay. read more

Stayed here over this last weekend. Aside from the fact that the hotel itself is rundown and outdated. It was a pain to check into as the front desk person seemed to have no records or information at hand. The moment you walk in you get haunted hotel vibes which was confirmed by the haunted Catalina tour we were on later that night which I highly recommend. Fun and spooky. The room had a terrible layout where the bathroom was tiny and falling apart. And the sink for the bathroom was in the sleeping area. See pictures. The walls were paper thin and you could hear everything going on in the hotel. The "cable" and "streaming" services for the TV would not work hardly at all. I barely got any sleep the whole weekend. The room was cheap. And the bed was comfortable. But other than that- this place was a nightmare. I would spend a little more next time to stay somewhere more updated and less haunted. If there are ANY other options, take it. We walk in and I can tell the carpet looks dirty, random stains everywhere. We get back to our room after our long day out wanting to take a shower and the water is out, didn't get fixed for a couple hours. Then once we are finally ready for bed, we pull down the sheets and see a giant stain in the middle of the bed. I then move my pillow and find a spider behind it. We remove the sheet to make it sleepable for the night (there is no staff there after 8 to help), then next day when we try to ask for new sheets they say cleaning staff is gone and can't do it until the next morning (when we check out...). They wouldn't even just give us new clean sheets to change the bed ourselves. They were zero help and not the tiniest bit apologetic about us coming to a dirty bed. This was my first time staying on Catalina island and I know most things are older so I came in with tempered expectations. I would not stay here again, but it was fine for the weekend. This place looked way nicer in photos and wish I would have read more reviews before my trip. Pros: Location, affordable price, nice staff/easy check-in, mini fridge and window A/C unit in the honeymoon cottage. Cons: Extremely tiny room, gross carpeting so I wore shoes inside whole time, rust rings in "sanitized toilet", shower curtain held in place with garbage, ants in bathroom when we checked in, holes in bathroom doors, jacuzzi was STILL closed "for COVID" in August 2022, and no ironing board in room. read more

This is an older Victorian style hotel that is close to Restaurants & Shops in the Avalon side of Catalina Island. The hotel "staff" woman at the front office was HIGHLY unprofessional and VERY RUDE/ Unhelpful. The Hotel is very dated and is in need of upgrades. The room we got was very small and appeared to be clean upon further inspection of the room. There was old dried up blood stain on the mattress blanket. There were lots of stains on the towels in the bathroom & mold on the faucets. The room lights & Fan would turn on/off randomly at night?!?!??? VERY ODD. FYI there is no A/C so the only way to cool off the room is with the fan. Since the lights kept flickering we had to shut everything off thus making the room VERY HOT! The walls are paper thin so expect to hear other hotel stayers full conversations through the wall. The carpet in the room was old & crusty so we had to wear our socks the entire time we were in the room. The toilet was broken & stopped flushing. We told the lady at the front desk & she gave a slight attitude and told us she will take care of it. Hours later when we came back to our room, the toilet was not fixed and it was disassembled. There was no note or phone call to tell us an update. We had to use the emergency phone number to get it fixed since the front desk was closed by the time we made it back to the hotel. As we were leaving the hotel, the SAME front desk lady was slouched in a chair near the entrance of the hotel messing with her phone and did not acknowledge us as we left the hotel with our luggage. This hotel is a literal nightmare and absolutely SUCKS. MONEY WASTED!!!!!! read more

DO NOT STAY HERE. This hotel was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. They put us in the bottom floor. A few minutes in, we realized the "free WiFi" didn't work. We asked if we could switch rooms as we didn't get any service. The attendant said we couldn't switch rooms because we already "walked in" mind you it was less than 3 minutes. Later, we realized how gross this place was with roaches as decoration inside the bathroom light, grime on the sink, and the overall musty feel that this place had as soon as you walk in. On top of that, the bathroom door does not close from the inside. You have to have someone push the door from the outside while you pull inside for it to fully close - and repeat to open it. The toilet also takes forever to flush. Every flush looks like it's going to over fill. I'm sure it happens often. The shower temperature also has a mind of its own. It randomly gets extremely hot and cold. The front door curtain also stays in a certain position (peep the picture) we had to put a towel over it or else you can see in from the outside. We stayed in the bottom floors room 101 and we could hear the steps from the top lobby as well as the neighbors next to us. Extremely thin walls that you can hear CONVERSATIONS! The good: This was one of the few places I saw with availability for the month of August that was under $200/night. The hotel is walking distance from the ferry port. The location is great. It's uphill but is only a few minutes walking-distance from the beach. Restaurants and shopping are all walking distance. A free breakfast is included after 9AM. It includes passion fruit guava juice, tea, coffee and wrapped pastries. They have gloves for you to grab the items. The hotel has patios outside that is open for anyone to sit on. If you have to check out but need them to hold your luggage you can store your stuff in the front lobby space. The staff members were friendly. The price was great. It was $126 for a one night stay and they let me check-in at anytime. Check-out was at 11 AM even though there was a sign that said it was at 10 AM. The bad: There is no air conditioning but the ceiling fan was helpful and there was ample air flow from the windows. The communal patio space was outside out window so we couldn't leave our curtain open if we wanted privacy. The bathroom is tiny and you have to hold the handle down for a while for the toilet to flush. The interesting: The bathroom sink and vanity are separate from the bathroom and is made out of a converted dresser. The hotel is decorated in a Victorian and vintage way inside and the outside also reflects the Victorian charm. It was built before the 1920s. I'd absolutely stay here again! read more

Everything! Rooms need new carpet-feels like someone spilled beer and left to dry. The cold water lever on the faucet on the sink in THE BED AREA does not work at all. Also the showers hot & cold indicator is mixed up. I turned completely to cold to showers and nearly scalded my whole left side of my body!! The screens are torn on 2 of 3 windows. The light has to stay on to use the fan. There is an electrical problem cause the light turned on by itself at 3am. Also when we left the room, after it had already been serviced, we purposely left the tv on-when we got back it was off. 3 floors no elevator!! If there are no rooms available just do a day trip...SAVE YOUR MONEY!! Do not stay here!! read more

Ehhh...... For almost $700 dollars per 2 nights I was expecting way BETTER. The outside pictures looked decent but NOPE. Cons: I understand this is an old Victorian building, but Jesus the rooms are in really bad shape. Everything is old and musty. -The carpet was absolutely disgusting and smelled like humid. -The windows were not closing properly and the screens were broken. -The bed mattress was super uncomfortable as it has a huge dent. -The mattress had Yellow stains (pee, body fluids)!!!? Who knows (see pics) -The bathroom was so TINY. You can barely fit to use the toilet. -Very very loud, not sure what the walls are made of but you can literally hear everything!!!!!!!!!! -Last, it just gives creepy vibes!!!!!!! CONS (but bear with me): This hotel is sorely in need of upgrades. The light switches look like they're from the 1960's (or earlier?). I don't mean that as exaggeration for effect. Also, please know that the hot tub does not work and the front desk clerk mentioned that it has been shut down for good, covid or no covid, due to pipe leaks. On the plus side, the rooms themselves while small and slightly shabby are super clean and tidy. This is no "fleabag hotel." The beds and bedding are comfortable. The shower works great, the towels are fluffy, and the tap water is also oddly delicious. We felt quite cozy in our room. Also, the view from the balcony down the hall was really great. It was a nice, inviting place to hang out. I felt like, for Catalina, this place was a super deal. Just be aware of the shortcomings before you book here so you do not expect this hotel to be something that it is not. It should have been classed 2 stars, not 3. I strongly recommend it as an affordable, comfortable way to stay overnight in Avalon. (for the record, i did not see any ghosts etc and the property had "good vibes" for whatever that's worth.) read more

Worse hotel I've ever stayed out. Their "queen" bed is not a real queen size but that of a full...what did it was the management being rude and having poor customer service to the matter. The bathroom will fit a 7 year old and that's about it-and good luck going to the bathroom without hitting your knees on the shower or your head. Awful experience. We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Catalina! The building is over 100 years old and it's a small boutique hotel, so don't expect the same amenities you'd get at a Hilton, but this place is packed with charm. The location of this hotel is perfect! We walked absolutely everywhere, and it's really convenient to hop on the shuttle bus also. We were on the 3rd floor with an ocean view room (#302, highly recommend!) and there is a beautiful shared patio on each floor also. We loved sitting out there with coffee or a drink! The room was much more spacious than we had imagined and the bed was extremely comfortable. We even had a full size dresser, table and two chairs, and a small closet. The bathroom is indeed tiny, but it serves its purpose efficiently. We got very cold at night and asked for a space heater, which we were provided right away and it worked wonders. The only drawback for us was that the friendliness of service was a bit lacking. I wouldn't call it rude, but maybe cold. The entrance/lobby is set up like a house and when you walk in the front door, an employee is directly in front of you at a desk not 5 feet away. Twice when we came in we were simply not greeted at all. In a boutique hotel like this, it's much more customary to have more interaction with the employees, so that was a bit off-putting, but by no means a dealbreaker. We would stay here again! read more

Place was clean for the most part, but their was some long hairs found in the bathroom, which I don't have long hair...I have short hair. And at times I did not have good WiFi connection. BETTER than HOME! This place treated us so well! Everyone does anything they can to make your stay feel great. Felt like family. A charming 1892 house converted to a boutique, cozy little inn. From the deck/patios you can see the bright blue ocean. Kona coffee every morning. They do everything and anything to take care of you. As we were leaving, my daughter lost my binoculars (not worth much $ but much sentimental value). She was so upset, as was I. They did everything to try and find them. Scouring the hotel and even calling the manager to review videotapes (who does that??!!). Finally we had to depart. 2 days later I get a message they FOUND THEM and were SHIPPING THEM to me! I have stayed at fancy hotels in Vegas, LA, SF, etc...I will NEVER STAY ANYWHERE ELSE ON CATALINA ISLAND!! 7/5 stars!! read more

This hotel intrigues me because it's 1990's. I am a professional photographer and like to travel around the world. What attracts me about this hotel is the blue and white style of the building, which is very 80's and 90's. Inside the antiques lightings ,doors and stairs are very attractive to me. Especially the Balcony outside on the 2nd floor so attractive to me, is a good place to take a good IG photos lol. This hotel is a 2-star hotel, and don't expect like 5 star hotel quality, but rooms are clean and cozy price is very fair. Zero stars. Worst Hotel I've ever been. We checked in on Sep 8 in cottage A (2 connecting rooms). After a few minutes of being there, my husband & I saw a big roach come out of one of the pillows. We told the front desk & the lady seemed mad that we were asking for a different room. She said they're fully booked & she can't help us. She then talked to the cleaning lady, and I'm assuming to possibly find the roach in their own language. She told me that they would re Clean the room for us. I asked again if there were 2 separate rooms because we were willing to be separated than stay in the same room. She said no, they're really booked, and there's nothing she could do. I asked for a refund & she said sure, "But I need you to get your stuff from the room right now before I can give you a refund." I asked her to give me a few minutes because I had to call around to book another hotel right there & then. She said she could only give me a few minutes because they needed to clean the room right away. I asked if maybe they could recommend a hotel nearby since the internet in that area is so slow, I couldn't get my phone to load. She said no with a straight face. No apology given or whatsoever. It's the worst customer service we've ever experienced. I don't normally do reviews, but stay away from this hotel. It's really really really bad. read more

BED BUGS AND HORRIBLE STAFF. Possibly the most unprofessional hotel experience I have ever had. Hotel condition and amenities are either old, dirty, or not functioning. There are a plethora of hotels at a similar price point that offer a much better place to stay. Spent the night here with my family with the intent to stay another, and woke up covered in bed bug bites. We contacted the front desk. We were greeted by the hotel manager Charlie knocking at our room door, asking for proof of bed bugs. After showing him the bug bite marks on our shoulders, legs, arms, and hands, his demeanor completely changed. He raised his voice and told us we had to vacate the room so they could "fumigate" it. To which we were at first receptive to as we were sure it was standard procedure to relocate guests to a different room in the case of bed bugs or other infestations. However to our surprise he clarified that he was not getting us another room and that we needed to find another hotel. Rather taken aback we requested an answer as to why this was his first and seemingly only solution to the issue. He said that due to "legal reasons" we needed to "vacate the premises". To which I being in the hospitality industry requested to know what legal reason allows hotels to kick guests out of hotels after they report something wrong with their room. To which he responded verbatim "It's hospitality laws, I know them, you don't, get out so we can prepare your room for the next guest." I was blown away. We even asked if they had any recommendations of other hotels to go to, he responded with "I don't know, the hotels around here are booked up by now. you still need to leave, good luck." then walked away. Never have seen a hotel staff member supposedly in charge act in such a rash and immature way. I do wonder if he has heard this complaint before and has done this to other customers. Truly unacceptable for an employee. Not to mention the fact that the hotel had bed bugs leads me to believe the whole place is in desperate need of cleaning. We booked a room at the Hermosa down the street and had a significantly better experience. If you want to bring yourself or your family to a nice stay, stay FAR AWAY from this hotel. read more

Had a great time in Catalina. We stayed just one night and would recommend staying here. It's the best rate on the island. Mind you... you do have to trek up a moderately sized hill, but I personally didn't mind. I really enjoyed the vintage vibes and coffee and pastries in the morning. read more

Do not stay here. The bathroom area is extremely small. The bed was caved in in the middle, so two of us sleeping in it was almost impossible. Trash under the bed, carpet was dirty. No A/C, and if you kept the ceiling fan on, the light stayed on with it. The bathroom had yellow stains around the toilet. The sheet had stains on it. The lamp shade had some sort of stain all over it. The volume on the TV was literally unable to hear it. No changing area at all, so if you are there with another couple or your children, you have to hide behind the closet door to change. Advertised that they had a hot tub, but when we arrived it was clearly out of service, they had a huge wooden board over the top of it. I am very disappointed in the price we paid versus how dirty this room was. read more

kinda old..but it's okay. Not your modern hotel.. this is more victorian style. The room is small, the bathroom is smaller. The sink is outside in the living area (see picture). I wish they would take out the seating area in the room and expand the bathroom instead. DO NOT STAY HERE! Paper thin walls/floor. There was no one on duty at night, and they do not respond to calls. If you had a true emergency, you would be without help. I wanted to give three or four stars just for ambience and charm, but my experience was so poor that I just can't give more than two. The place is quaint and antique-ish, true to the 1880 construction. Rooms are small, but that's part of the charm, right? Our first night there was music coming from one of the lower rooms, and traveling traveling through the walls. We could identify every single song the other guests are playing, and hear every little thing. They were fighting, yelling and slamming doors. We turned on a white noise podcast and the ceiling fan, but we could still hear the yelling. I realize people come to Catalina to have fun. I can deal with the noises during the middle of the day, but at 2am on a Monday, when I'd like to get up and kayak in the morning, it's no fun! At 1:00 AM I called the person on duty from the "red emergency phone" and no one answered. I left a message. Called again 2:30 and a man said they would come check it out. I explained that you can't hear it in the hallway, as it's coming through the floor of my room, and asked that he please come to our room to hear it for himself. He assured me he would check it out. He never arrived. I called back at 3 and no one answered. At 4am, the police came - thank goodness!! I could hear every word of the officers conversation including his knock on the door, and him telling them "it's 4 AM," and the woman saying, "we weren't doing nothing." I really think this is a problem in construction and acoustics with the hotel. The next morning, we asked to be moved to another room and they accommodated us. The 3rd floor room is a bit quieter, and the loud group seem to have checked out. We saw another family in the lobby and asked if they heard the noise. They also said their kids were scared by all the yelling and banging on walls. We slept half of the day yesterday, basically lost a vacation day, because the hotel would not step up to do the right thing when another guest was out of control. read more

I stayed here for Valentines and it was my first time Santa Catalina. I definitely recommend this place for $140. We got a nice decent room. Everything was within walking distance to the hotel and checking was the smoothest process ever and the guy at the front desk is so friendly. The beds were comfortable and we got a nice view to the to the ocean. I'm definitely coming back here and staying longer. read more

My wife and I were looking for a get-away from Los Angeles so we decided to go to Catalina Island, Avalon. The hotel itself is very quaint, quite different from your modern hotels which did not disappoint. Colton was very friendly and helpful. He did us a great service by upgrading us to a room with a view of the ocean. The hotel and room was very clean, well manicured. Each floor has large outside balcony where you can sit and enjoy your complimentary coffee and breakfast. Outside there is a large sitting area by the spa surrounded by a lovely garden and trees...very private and serene. This hotel is not for everyone...there are no elevators, but the stairs are not bad. The staff usually leaves at night so make sure you contact them before they leave if you need anything for the night. We enjoyed our stay here because it was different, centrally located, quiet, clean, had friendly service and the beautiful ocean view. The rate was good too! read more
