I go to Nogales, Sonora maybe four times a year. I always stay at this hotel. It is the old and somewhat classic hotel on the south side of the border. And just on the south side of the border. You can literally walk to the downtown border crossing in five minutes. You also are very close to the old shopping section of the city, although the offerings there have been curtailed by American hostility and the difficulties associated with the border. In other words, Nogales was more a booming tourist town 40 years ago than it is now. Still, the town is fun, there are some nice stores, many medical and dental offices are very close and within easy walking distance, I have always felt safe, and the hotel is cool. It is not palatial, But the rooms, especially the new suites, are spacious, quiet, with good beds and great bathrooms. Also, the staff is reasonably helpful. It does help to speak some Spanish, but not a lot is necessary. Be advised that the hotel is in a mixed part of town. Meaning there is a lot of activity, A noticeable police presence, and some hookers at night. This is not terribly troublesome unless you are easily offended. I have never felt hassled or threatened.
The hotel has a decent restaurant and bar, although it suffers from disco styling. Given the colonial nature of the hotel, something more traditional might be advised. The staff will valet park your car in a secure lot. I always drive and have never had problems. All in all, it is a great place to stay.
BTW you should get the best deal if you call the hotel directly. Rooms with a northern exposure have a view of the border but tend to be noisy. read more
