I booked a room for Father's Day. Once I reached my room, I found the bed to be EXTREMELY hard. In my opinion, it was a bed that no human being could sleep on. When I asked the hotel staff for some assistance, I was dismissed and the bed was my problem. I ended up not staying and the hotel did not offer to reimburse me at least a portion of the room fee. My friend and I enjoyed a lovely lunch and drinks here this past Sunday. I had never been to the area and she highly recommended meeting at the bar inside the Hotel Leger. The food here is excellent and so is the service. The bartender, Bailey was welcoming and friendly and treated us to a number of personalized, unique and flavorful craft cocktails. She was incredibly knowledgeable and even made the raspberry rose syrup herself! We were very impressed. She went above and beyond to make our experience here enjoyable. We enjoyed a delicious appetizer and both had lunch as well. Everything tasted very good, but the fries were incredible. Some of the best I've had! I would definitely recommend a stop here to anyone in the area. The hotel has a lot of history and we were hoping to get a tour and learn about the prohibition basement and see the pool, but unfortunately we ran out of time on this visit. I look forward to returning and seeing more of this hotel and hopefully seeing more of our amazing server as well! read more

The new lady inside the restaurant was super nice and attentive (probably the nicest person in this town besides our Airb&b hosts). The food was good too, but then I'm not a picky eater. What really bothered us was that the waitress outside in the back was blantanlty ignoring us. They had live music, which was awesome and kinda busy, but she would ask people around us if they needed anything or another round of beers but not us, me nor my girlfriend. After 30 minutes, I had to get her attention as she was scurring off. Idk why we were being ignored. It's as if we were invisible. That did not make us feel welcomed. This town did give us rude vibes since this wasn't the only location that didn't acknowledge our presence. I think I'll skip out on visiting Mokelumne Hill in the future. read more

Delicious, fresh food! I've enjoyed dinner at the Leger a few times and stopped in today for lunch. I had a Taco Salad with chicken and no shell (making it gluten free). The salad had great portions, amazing flavor, and the owner talked to me to assure me the dressing and ingredients were homemade and gluten free. For dinner I've had the steak covered with blue cheese and fresh veggies on the side. They use in season veggies and there's no need to add salt or pepper because the seasonings they use are on point! I wish I'd taken a photo of the lunch to share, but I'll be sure to go back and upload a photo next time. read more

This place is AMAZING!!! I have stayed here several times over the past decade. Its decor and furniture are mostly historic, even has creaky floors!!! I really like that there are no tv or phones in the rooms. Some rooms have access to the balcony where you can sit and read a book or enjoy an amazing sunset. The courtyard is beautiful and has a lovely pool that is never crowded. Each room here is unique so you can stay in a different room each time you visit!!! I love this historical hotel; I loved it soooo much I had my wedding reception here in 2007. The staff at the Leger were wonderful and made my special day PERFECT!!!! The food was EXCELLENT. My guests had a really great time!!! This location is perfect, there are many things to do in the area and its only 15 minutes from Jackson. I highly recommend visiting Moaning Caverns where I had my wedding ceremony (Yes, I did rappel, no I wasn't wearing a wedding gown in the cave). The hotel has had some renovations, you can check them out on Hotel Impossible. For those who can't live without, yes they do have WiFi and yes, your cell phone (Verizon) will work here. The hotel is under new ownership. The new owners have been here for 7 months. They are super friendly and are committed to making sure you have a great stay!! Prices are reasonable. We took a day trip from Gilroy to the Hotel Ledger. We got here around 3pm the steak sandwich was delicious the fries were different but really good as I love fries. The people are so nice here I really recommend eating and take a little tour of the place I give it a 10 star if they had that many. read more

As long as you know what to expect of this hotel, you will have a fine experience. We saw it on Ghost Adventures so decided to travel from Sacramento and check it out. The hotel is unfortunately dilapidated. It's too bad it's not better cared for because the bones and the history are awesome! It was clean enough - no bugs, nothing disgusting, had hot water. It's just very old, the bed was horribly uncomfortable and it was very noisy until late at night. No TV, no coffee maker. If you're ok with these things, then don't hesitate to stay here. We went for the experience, and now we won't have to do it again. :) read more

We found this place to be so charming. Its over 150 yrs old, so yes it has creaky floors and drafty windows and doors. It also has water stains from past leaks on the ceiling and peeling paint due to the lack of a vent fan in the bathroom, but that's what you deal with in order to keep the charm of such an old building. We were pleased with the staff, cleanliness, and the pet friendly policy. We stayed in Room 1 with a working fireplace, patio access (through the window, how cool) and a private full bath. It was lovely. There was a continental breakfast served in the morning as well. So check this out, there were 2 other people staying there the same night doing a paranormal investigation. Um, what? Apparently the Ghost Hunters (the TV show) was there last week. So yea, I guess it's a haunted hotel. Boo! read more

Lost our reservations at the last moment. My mother had made reservations for a fifth Friday (The Woody Show) along with the Saturday following, months in advance and had been calling the establishment regularly to verify her reservations and to see if coronavirus restrictions had been lifted to the extent that live music would resume in the bar. She was planning on staying that Friday and Saturday nonetheless, also to visit the Renegade Winery down the street. She called to verify reservations one last time today only to find out that there is now no record of her reservation in their computer. My mother made a special 100 mile round trip out there just to speak to the owners in person regarding the exception. Thankfully, the owner we talked to made the situation right with us in earnest. For anybody that is thinking about visiting the Hotel Leger, I can recommend it. It's a great old hotel and the owners are conscientious and try to do the right thing when things go awry. It's important to know that the hotel uses booking software that is supposed to send booking confirmation emails. Be sure you get your confirmation email and print it out. If the software has a hiccup and eats your reservation you might not get your room. All in all, the situation was resolved to our satisfaction, but still disappointed that we will stay only one night instead of two this time. read more

I have not stayed at the hotel but I have been here many times to eat and have a cocktail at the bar. The liquor prices are great. I think last time I was there I had a craft pint of beer and two cocktails for $13. The staff have always been nice and helpful and the food is good enough that I keep coming back. Wow what an experience. Let me preface that by saying if you go into the "adventure" of staying at the Hotel Leger with a very open mind and an easygoing adventure perspective, you will probably like the experience. I will start with the positives: * Very friendly staff: The manager Kim, the housekeeper/bartender Katie and the male bartender were all very nice and tried accommodating. * The hotel rooms (we were in room 1) are all very cute with nice antiques. * The hotel grounds are wonderful, we loved sitting out in the garden and using our laptops with free wifi. We hung out in the cellar too, cool! * We loved that we could roam around the entire hotel including the cellar and jail anytime we wanted. And there was never anyone else around so we had the place to ourselves. * The bar is big, welcoming and comfortable to just hang out at. * The food in the restaurant was very good. * The complimentary fig bars in the morning were perfect to start the day. * The balcony was fun to sit out on and have a glass of wine. * And we think we heard ghosts each night with a loud bang in the middle of the night both nights! Now the negatives... * Called two months in advance and reserved room 1. When we got there they had us in another room but said they could give us room 1 but there was plumbing issues that had to be addressed. We came back three times while waiting for our room which took over three hours before ready. * Our shower in our room could not be fixed and did not work and we had to use the one down the hall one day and then was given yet another (claw foot tub, no shower) the next day. * No hand towels in the room the first night but they showed up the second day after the room was cleaned. * The manager seemed scattered albeit very willing to accommodate the best she could. I think if she was more organized and had more help she could make this a nice place to stay. Overall I enjoyed the visit but only because I adjusted my perspective and mindset for an adventure. read more

I've stayed at the Hotel Leger 5 times. This my all-time favorite hotel, ever! The staff makes you feel like an old friend and are very courteous. The hotel has a restaurant and saloon for lunch, supper, and night caps. A great breakfast can be had at Frank's, just down the highway less than a minute's drive. Keep in mind that this is not a Hilton or even a Motel 6. This is a gold rush era hotel, filled with antiques, and is family owned and run. It is a very old building, and their are likely to be things wrong. You may have to walk down the halway to a shared bathroom. You probably won't have more than one outlet. There won't be a hair dryer. The floors will creak and you'll be able to hear, or even feel, the music in the saloon. You may experience a ghostly encounter, though I have not. If you come here with an attitude toward having an adventure, you certainly will, but if you are expecting the Hilton, you will be sorely dissapointed. I stay here every time I am in the area, and have brought friends and family here to show them this "working museum." There are some rooms that have two or 3 full-size beds, and have their own bathroom. Some of the rooms share a bathroom with up to 2 other rooms. There are earplugs available, and I suggest you use them, because there is no sound insulation. The food is Ok, with nothing to write home about, but good enough, and right there so you don't have to go anywhere. The drinks are good and there is a good selection of beer and liquor for mixed drinks and shots. The beds are comfortable, but mostly full-sized, with the exception of the queen bed down in the courtyard suite, which also has its own kitchen and living room. The oranges are great though hard to get to. The courtyard is lovely. My favorite thing is to sit on the balcony and watch the sun set while talking to family and/or friends. This is not a place to just stop and rest. It is a destination of itself, and an adventure every time. If you think you can enjoy it for what it is, then I urge you to stop by. read more

I am giving this place 3 spoooooky stars! You have to know what you are getting into - this is NOT THE WESTIN but it is worth the trip! I stayed here last Saturday and it is super quaint. Not very clean (the bathtubs were atrocious, there was other people's hair on the sink and the carpets needed to be vacuumed) but if you can suck it up and get past that you have to go because it is HAUNTED!!! Yes it is true because I saw the ghost of the young girl waving at me at 4:30AM in my room. I thought it was my cousin playing a joke on me but when she answered me from her bed I knew I had seen the real deal. Wild! And so of course I slept the rest of the night with the light on.....Prices are reasonable I suppose....not really worth it because of the aforementioned uncleanly rooms and the HORRID 'complimentary' coffee. At least they stepped it up a notch and offered snack bars also. Note - do not plug in your cell phone and more than one other appliance because you will blow a fuse...hilarious....where else would this type of thing happen? Absolutely beautiful. The hotel definitely has an old charm to it and it is full of history. The rooms are beautiful, the cellar is gorgeous, and the staff are attentive and polite. I called to make a reservation and I regret to remember what the man's name is, but he was just so polite and kind. We had a few laughs about which rooms were most haunted, and he even let us rent their ghost hunting kit for free! (normally a $15 charge). We got to tiny Mokelumne Hill and the sight of the hotel is beautiful. The minute you walk in, staff is ready to assist you in your check in. Almost everything in the rooms were antique, so I was a bit nervous on sitting/putting my things on them. The squeaky floorboards and the thin walls are proof of just how old this place is. We stayed in room 6, which I think is the biggest room that has two queen beds and it's own bathroom. Some rooms do share bathrooms in the hall, but the bathrooms are clean and beautiful as well. Everything was clean, I felt comfortable just walking barefoot around the hotel. We had continental breakfast served by our amazing housekeeper Jules, who was sweet enough to let us see each room before we left, and this isn't the typical packaged pastries and cheap bags of coffee. The OJ was freshly squeezed by staff from the orange tree out back, there was fresh fruit and scones, and of course coffee . Each room almost has its own personality and different schemes, and you are greeted by two swans made of towels which add a cute charm to the place. The staff does go home after a certain time, so you need to ask them for any assistance or accommodations before they leave. We just so happen to be lucky enough to be the only guests in the WHOLE hotel (no kidding). Staff went home around 9-10 and so they gave us a number code to unlock the front door in case we need to leave to get anything, we felt like the hotel was our actual home for the night, which was cool. As for the paranormal, unfortunately we didn't get anything :(. I was hoping to hear, see or feel the inhabitants of the hotel but no such luck. I was a bit bummed since we were the only ones in the whole entire hotel ( was hoping the inhabitants would use this to their advantage), but I guess between the snoring, whimpering and constant tossing and turnings which made the floor squeak like no tomorrow, maybe we scared them away....However, there definitely is a peculiar presence and energy in the hotel, and to me, a different energy in room 7, which is supposedly George Leger's room. Maybe it was the initial assumption of the place being haunted that skewed my beliefs, but I definitely feel something there... Overall, the hotel is definitely somewhere that people should see and spend the night. It is a throwback to the old, mining days and the hotel preserved the energy and the environment beautifully. The only real downside to this is that Mokelumne is such a small place, and shops close so early around the area, that it was hard to find somewhere to eat, even at 9pm! But if you really want an experience, and maybe even a paranormal one, Hotel Leger is definitely a need-to-go destination. My husband and I just stayed 2 nights here over the weekend, and it was wonderful. I purchased a deal from Amazon/Living Social for 2 nights, and it came with a bottle of wine, nut sampler from a local shop, a ghost hunting kit (!!), and $25 dining credit to the restaurant/saloon (totally love that there is a saloon in this hotel). We stayed in room 10, which was large and had a private bathroom. The room was a little chilly (ghost activity?!), but the blankets were more than cozy enough to keep us warm, and the bed was comfy. The bathroom looked like it had been remodeled in recent years and everything was in great condition. As everyone has mentioned, there are no tvs or phones in the rooms, which I loved. One of the reasons we got room 10 was that I noticed on the website there was going to be live music both nights we were there, and the rooms in the front of the hotel are very loud. We could still hear the music in room 10, but it was muffled enough that we could sleep. We ate at the restaurant twice, once for lunch and once for dinner, and both were yummy! The chicken bacon sandwich was delicious. When we were there, they were having their Mardi Gras party, with live music, a buffet, and drink specials. I'm pretty sure the whole town was there! It was awesome. The best part of this hotel is the warm service and lovely people. On Saturday morning, we asked David (one of the owners) for suggestions on what to do all day, and he gave us about a million options, then when we narrowed it down, he printed us out a map with directions (in case our GPS didn't get service) for a loop around several little Gold Country towns. We took his suggestions and had a great time. It is an absolutely beautiful area and the historic towns are so fun! Breakfast was pretty good, it's not extravagant BUT they had thick cinnamon raisin bread that my husband went crazy over, english muffins, pb&j, and a yogurt/cottage cheese bar. The coffee was also good; much better than your typical hotel coffee. Overall, we LOVED our weekend and can't wait to stay here over summer when we can use the pool! read more

Love this place! People are more than friendly, they make you feel at home. Food is EXCELLENT!!! Try the chipolte prime rib sandwich, I'm not a red meat person, but this sandwich will convert a vegetarian. The amenities are quaint, it's just like rolling back time a hundred years. If you like the Hyatt, this is not it, it's real, comfortable, noisy, floors squeak, and God Bless us all, NO TV's in the rooms. This place is all that's it's supposed to be and more, beautiful old growth gardens, refreshing pool, and plenty of ghosts!! This is a come as you are, get acquainted with people and have good conversations sorta place. Stayed in room # 6. It has two double beds and a view of the mountains. This is a B & B so don't expect televisions or phones or room service! It's low key, but very quaint. I didn't get a haunted room, so as a Paranormal Investigator, I cannot report too much. Nothing happened in my room unless I caught some EVPs on my recorder I left there. The staff is beyond sweet and accommodating! Loved Heather and Leanne at the front desk! Chuck the Chef, is awesome! The BAR is a fun mish mash of local colour and conversations fly high amidst the simple selection of mostly local beers, wines and limited liquor. So don't go asking for a fancy Mojito or Cosmo! Came here for a wedding. It was held in the back on the lawn next to the pool. This was a great wedding venue. Dinner was served as well as drinks. There was a dance floor and a DJ. I got to go in the basement and see the catacombs. Very interesting. I watched the Hotel Impossible episode and this years ago. I'm glad they are still in business and doing good. read more

Only visited for a couple hours to take a stretch break, but wow what a lovely place. Strolled through the old downtown and checked out some of the historic plaques before hitting the Leger's period saloon for a beer (for me) and some coffee (for my wife). Three notes: - the beer was cold - the coffee was strong - the hotel is one of a kind Interesting spot. Beautifully appointed with antiques and historic photographs. The old wood floors were enough to make me happy, but everywhere I looked there was some old piece of furniture...a lamp from the 30's, a mirror from the 1850's...that just made me want to wander around and take it all in. Regarding the wandering: you might not want stroll the place by yourself if you're easily alarmed. I had two somewhat odd occurrences. I'd heard the place was haunted, but it was a bright sunny day AND I was with someone so why would I be nervous? I'm a proud skeptic, I've never thought Quji boards were legit, but the two instances, though minor, were spooky nonetheless: 1) As I was walking toward one of the old original entrances, the two glass french doors (which were already closed) suddenly sort of banged together tighter as if kicked or pushed shut. It was sudden enough that I stopped about three feet from the doors, hands still in my pockets. I looked around the door frame for some sort of sensor (like those doors that unlock and open automatically for the wheelchair-bound) and, upon not seeing one, I turned to my companion and ask if she'd heard the doors close. She said yes and asked me why I'd kicked the door. When I said I hadn't we shared a sort of "that was eerie" look. I then tested floorboards near the door to see if perhaps there was an old warped board that might have caused the doors to slip. The floor was rock solid. Hmmm. What's stranger...and while it sounds crazy as I re-read it, I'm being honest here: as I walked towards the door I wondered to myself whether I could open the door, as I'd seen one of those keypad locks small hotels use for late-arriving guests on the outside as we walked into the saloon. Literally a split second after the thought crossed my mind, the door made the noise before I could even get my hands out of my pockets to reach for the handle. OK, no big deal. Maybe it was a timely wind, even though it was a dead calm kind of day. That's it: sudden gust of wind. Let's move on. 2) As we were leaving the saloon we chatted with a hostess briefly. She asked us if we wanted to explore the rooms upstairs, as there was only one guest around (in room One - the other twelve were unoccupied). We assumed this meant with her, so we followed her back to the old front door from where we'd just come, which was adjacent to the stairs. She talked briefly about the hotel and the historic pictures (never mentioning any ghosts or hauntings). Then, once she was done I asked if maybe we should all head up and check out the rooms. She told us to go up the stairs past the old, large photo of the original owner (George Leger) and feel free to explore. Not only did we feel it was odd she didn't come up with us, but she also mentioned, in an innocent kind of way, "the eyes in Leger's photo never seemed to leave you". Interesting: mysterious earlier door noise + life-size enlargement of 100-year-old photo of the deceased hotel owner that always looks at you. Nothing spooky about that. So we head upstairs and start looking at the rooms. They're awesome. Antiques everywhere with some of the coolest old dressers and beds I've seen. Great views of the town out the windows, sunlight streaming in. Then we get to room Seven, supposedly the room haunted by the owner. Nice room much like the others. We go in and, within a minute, I ask my wife if her scalp is tingling. Her's isn't, but mine is. It's like the old "spider-sense" was really buzzing. My hairs were standing on end. Perhaps I was freaking myself out because of the door noise. I shrugged off my anxiety, leaving the room to explore and, after a couple minutes, the feeling subsided. I thought to myself "maybe I was just weirding myself out". So I go back in and, instantly the same feeling returns. OK. Cool. My scalp and brain are apparently scared and I don't understand why. This is not logical adult-scared, but sort of kid-scared: like when I was a child and would lay completely still, frozen with fear when the Sand People started making those disturbing gurgling howls on the illegal audio tape of Star Wars I listened to at bedtime, even though I knew Sand People were not coming to get me from under my bed. This feeling was definitely unusual and, because I couldn't pin down why it was happening, it made it all the more eerie. Time to head back down. All that said, definitely worth a visit. And the food menu looked pretty good. Very moderately priced. Enjoy! read more

I felt I need to update my former review. We decided to go for a last-minute trip overnight, and our experience was so much better. We stayed in room 2- which is a favorite for us. Staff was very attentive, kind and positive- the entire time. We enjoyed the bar- and the owner was upbeat and made some great martinis. We decided to eat dinner in our room, and everything was INCREDIBLE- we ordered the mushroom ravioli, balsamic chicken and a new ribeye dinner dish they added recently- very, very good! We love using the authentic in-room fire place and enjoy hottest shower you can get anywhere. Also, I asked for more pillows before we arrived- they did not disappoint. I still see the need for important updates with paint, curtains, small broken handles, and a toilet needing a bit of bolt tightening, but honestly this time I felt the charm, kind staff and guests, and a bit of hill-mountain peace and beauty we've enjoyed in this charming gold country location. Stayed in room number 5 which featured water damage and mold on on the ceiling and wall, 1/2" gaps in between the flaking painted floorboards, walls covered in plaster substrate (aka half finished plaster) and a Goodwill chic full size bed! The dirt caked area rug makes you want to wear your shoes to bed and the window covering barely covers the window--which gives one an uneasy feeling being that all of the windows are accessible on the balcony to any drunken voyeur. From the $115 + tax for the room (I've stayed in better at $30 a night), the $35 dog fee (which is mentioned NOWHERE) and after being passive aggressively scolded by one of the owners for not calling to book the room due to the pet fee (ahem--we wouldn't have found this place without the internet) and one of the worst dinners of our lives, we were out $200! The same owner gave us a bizarre game of Scrabble, which came complete with a dead cockroach and there is no TV, the internet was down all night and morning, so you basically just have to pray to fall asleep so you can wake-up and get the hell out. The food was pretty dang gross; the veggie burger was topped with two frozen veggie patties, the Bloody Mary over-seasoned with horseradish--why, just why?! The "continental breakfast" is comprised of plastic wrapped danishes, watered down coffee and some juice. As others have mentioned it is super loud on live music nights and even though we heard the saddest and loudest cover of "Blue Bayou", we could have dealt with this if we didn't have so many issues with our accommodation. Overall, I'd rate our experience as amazing--amazingly terrible! Room #5 should be repaired before it is allowed to be rented, as it is a total mess (I live out of our truck for a large part of the summer--I'm not hard to please). The most infuriating part is that this is a historical landmark and it might as well be designated as being in a "state of arrested decay" as the owners clearly have no interest in preserving what could be a historical marvel. Instead it is treated like a cash cow; the balconies (which are accessible only by climbing out the windows) is clad entirely in unfinished plywood on the south end of the building. The restaurant roof at the rear is clearly disintegrating, as the insulation foam is totally exposed. The carpet in the hallway of the 2nd story is stained and is coming up so badly in parts that it is a legitimate tripping hazard. The wood floors are painted brown in most of the rooms, bowing and have severe gaps (up to 1/2" in some areas). This place sincerely deserves more respect and being that I have a BS in architecture, I laid awake most of the night dreaming about winning the lottery, buying the current owners out and restoring it lovingly. Sigh, if only! About the town: my husband are in our 30's and we're natural looking folks with long hair; if you're of the same persuasion be prepared to experience that welcoming "Easy Rider" vibe in this little town. Mokelumne Hill is a perfect example of a town that wants your money, but not YOU. No doubt this is a red town (definitely saw "State of Jefferson" propaganda), so let that be a proverbial warning shot to all "gentle folk". We recommend: Sutter Creek, Arnold, or Murphy's as their establishments cost about the same, the people are pleasant and you get a truly historical experience. read more

Although hard to believe today, Moke Hill actually had a very wild and interesting history. Outlaw Joaquin Murrieta used to hang out here (that was before he got killed, got his head chopped off and pickled in a jar) and the store keepers built tunnels under the street so that their respectable customers could cross the street between their establishments without getting robbed, stabbed or shot in the street above. It's a lot safer than that now though Anyway, don't expect 5 star luxury at this only hotel in a one horse town, because your experience will be more 1850s than even 1950s. No phones, clock radios or TVs in rooms, dodgy electrical fittings and shaky floor lamps, shabby rooms, rickety old furniture, creaking floorboards, shared bathrooms and the only way out onto the veranda is by climbing out through one of your windows. Sounds great, huh!? Actually, it is a lot of fun if the 1850s experience is what you're looking for. I've been quite a few times and always look forward to going back. They have a great "period" saloon and beautiful little restaurant with great, reasonably priced food, wines and cocktails. In addition, they sometimes have barbecues and live bands in the gardens. Other entertainment too. Well worth a visit so long as you understand what it is. P.S. There's also a quaint little church down the street a little with a small but very welcoming congregation that's well worth visiting if you're there on a Sunday morning. read more

I've now stayed in this hotel a couple of times while in the area for business, and the service is always fabulous and friendly. The restaurant downstairs has great food--and while the floors creak in such an old building, the hotel is well-insulated, scenic, and very relaxing after a long day of work. I've also been very pleased with the quality of the wireless, which can sometimes be spotty in historic hotels but has been very reliable for me. read more

I have it on good authority that the kitchen at this restaurant is NOT understaffed, meaning there is no excuse for this kind of neglect. Three of us had dinner. There were "no shrimp in the house" after server described the wonders of the firecracker shrimp appetizer. One of us popped for a beef filet--to be served medium rare. It came out 1) cut into pieces, 2) slate gray through and through, 3) drier than British humor, and 4) so hard it could have been used as a doorstop. One of us ordered a burger--witch was botched and had to be redone before leaving the kitchen. Unlike the far more expensive filet, the burger was at least medium--although really and truly flavorless. The pesto ravioli appetizer is bizarre as an app and very mediocre. The salads were a high point--enormous and full of fresh veggies. The only problem with these is that the menu doesn't disclose what's in them; for example, given that a "beet salad" was in the menu, you'd think the menu would mention that the "house salad" includes beets--and the two of us who ordered the "house salad" did so because they don't care for beets. The server was clearly mortified at the endless parade of gaffs from the kitchen but remained very diplomatic. She is the only reason I'm giving this place two stars, as she was not only the sole server in the restaurant but ALSO the sole bartender--which was madness. She was a real hero about her predicament, working like mad while remaining pleasant and sociable despite the utter neglect and decrepitude of this hotel restaurant. Go to the Leger for a drink at the historic bar. This really is worth it. But, trust me, you want to get dinner elsewhere. read more

Beautiful hotel. The food in the saloon is superb and the staff is personable and attentive. The hotel is situated close to cute shops with awesome antiques and beautiful artwork. This review is about the restaurant, there are plenty about the hotel. We were recommend to this hotel/restaurant by the owner of the B&B that we stay at. The good part....the clam chowder was excellent. Very rich and tasty. The bad part: the prime rib dinner. Whatever thoughts you have of a tender, delicious and tasty piece of prime rib.....forget it. If you want to resole your shoes, or, use it as a blackjack to knock someone out, this is it. My wife ordered well done...she could only eat 1/4 of it, since it was so tough and loaded with fat. My medium rare also had generous portions of fat and was tougher than a $6 steak at Denny's. Too bad, for $27 each. The baked potatoes were smallish and overdone, the vegetable (whatever it was) looked like it came out of a freezer bag. Service was fine, the balcony view was good. Judging by the reviews, it looks like something happen after 2016. We will not be coming back or recommending this place, we advised our B&B people the same. read more

My sisters and I love haunted houses, scary movies, and Halloween. I wanted to do something fun and there it was an opportunity on Groupon to go to the Hotel Leger complete with ghost hunting kit. Giddy with excitement, husbands in toe, we packed our bags and headed to Mokelumne Hill. The moment we stepped into the Hotel we were met by Leann who indeed was the hostess with the mostest. We were embraced as family immediately. She handed us our ghost hunting kits and showed us to our rooms. It was just as we hoped it would be..OLD...and creaky. You couldn't take a step without the floor creaking beneath you. She was knowledgeable about the rooms and revealed what she could and left the rest of it open to our imagination. We met Chuck who was so sweet and had a few stories of his own to share. Thanks Chuck... You were awesome! The bartenders were great...the company in the bar was fantastic. We drank, we sang songs, we laughed...what a GREAT time! We ventured through the hotel with our ghost hunting kits and the best part of all was the stuff that sits below the hotel floors. The jail, the wine cellar, and the little meeting room. We stayed rooms 11 and 10. Room 11 has access to the balcony through the window (so Tombstone). We sat out on the balcony and warched the town go by. This was such a great place to have a fun getaway if you are looking for a great haunt, lots of fun and absolutely no frills.
