    Continental breakfast
    Christine A.

Lots of factors make this place a great choice for staying in Rome. For one, it's on a quiet, little street in Monti, an often overlooked neighborhood, and an easy walk to the Cavour transit station. Those who are able could also easily walk to Termini station or the Colosseum district. The hotel is right around the corner from Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore, which I HIGHLY recommend visiting. Other than comfortable proximity to the sights, for me the biggest perk was the continental breakfast. Rick Steves didn't say much about the hotel in his guidebook, but did however write that it had "a breakfast room fit for aristocrats." They had quite the little spread with so many pastries, cereals, juices, fruits, meats and cheeses, hard and soft-boiled eggs, and different coffees on request. A warm chocolate croissant and a cappuccino here, that's the life. As for our room, it was a good place to keep our stuff while running around the city. Not a lot of space to roam through the room, but it was clean and well air-conditioned, which made for a nice siesta in the middle of the day. Bathroom had much more room, though the shower only had space enough to stand upright beneath the spray of water. The hotel's elevator is fairly antiquated and small. Two people and their luggage can just barely make it while saying Hail Marys all along the ride. While booking online we were given lots of options for requested services. We opted for the €50 transfer from the airport and the €4-a-day mobile internet hot spots. Both you pay for when you receive them and not ahead of time. They never had the mobile hot spots, the three days we were there, as they were always rented out. Since our connecting flight was late getting us to the plane that would take us to Rome, we desperately e-mailed ahead to let the hotel know we were delayed. They got back to us right away to let us know our pick-up driver would still be waiting for us at the airport. Sure enough he was at Da Vinci in the middle of the night, looking weary and holding a sign with our name. It was a rather harrowing ride to Monti with no Fiat or pedestrian alike safe in his path. So that was our experience. I recommend Hotel Raffaello, most particularly for first-timers in Rome.

Hotel has contemporary decor that offers with a good selection of Italian-American continental breakfast food items. The shower is of the traditional style that is of course on a much smaller scale compared to the U.S. It is worth it to take up their offer for the private transportation from the airport since driving around Rome is far more intense compared to Manhattan, NYC area. Yes, there was some road noise, but not as much traffic such as being located on via Cavor street where majority of it happens. Great location on the tiny street "via Urbana" where it becomes a pedestrian row of shops, businesses and near their subway. The location doesn't feel like a tourist trap which actually rather occurs closer by the Coliseum/Forum area. The walk to the Coliseum area is about 15 minutes or so, but take the scenic walk through the university. You can easily walk your carry on luggage from the hotel to the high speed train area within less than 10 minutes. Front desk staff is helpful, just ask some questions. It was nice to see that umbrellas can be borrowed from them as well.

(Continued- Part 2) Location The location of this hotel is so ideal. It is located on a side street so it is not noisy in the evenings but at the same time it is so close to everything. There is a supermarket right next door. We bought large water bottles for our daily. excursions for 0.25 euros for a large bottle (The 0.25 ones are in the back on a shelf. We then put them in our mini fridge in our room. The ones in the store fridge when you first walk in are about 0.80 euros.) There is a pharmacy around the corner. There are numerous gelato spots nearby in each direction. There are many, many restaurants in walking distance. The Trevi Fountain is a 15 minute walk and the Spanish Steps are another 10 mins past the fountain. There are also many designer stores in that area. The Roma Termini train station is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. There are many souvenir shops all around. Our driver from the airport recommended that we visit the church near our hotel. We then had a guide from one of our excursions recommend it as well. On our last day, after checking out (and leaving our luggage at the hotel at no extra charge) we stopped by the church. It is definitely worth visiting (for free! Brief tours and an upstairs museum ticket range from 3-5 euros/person) and it less than a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel ordered us a taxi whenever we needed one. We took a taxi to Vatican City, where we had a booked excursion. This cost us about 11 euros (at 6:45 AM, so it was a quick ride with very little traffic at the time). The hotel also provides free breakfast and a coffee machine in the lobby area which is available all day and night. The only hot items for the breakfast were scrambled eggs and toast  (as well as coffee, of course). There were also boiled eggs, cereals, muffins, cheeses, ham, and a few other items. Lastly, we really loved how warm and welcoming the staff were. Everyone, especially one particular lady at the front desk, was super helpful. We came to them for help with directions on how to get to places nearby and they directed us where we needed to go and literally mapped it out for us, highlighting the route on the map. I truely do recommend this hotel and would gladly stay here again. As mentioned in the beginning, yes it has some downsides but looking at all it has to offer, the positives outweigh the negatives.

After a few days the server didn't need to ask anymore he just brought me a cappuccino when I sat down. That is probably the biggest breakfast buffets I have ever seen. By Rome standards for a full-service hotel, it would be considered affordable by many. But just to be clear, it is not ultra-inexpensive. For the money, it is firmly in the 4-star hotel genre (getting a 5-star Yelp rating from me within this category because I could find nothing wrong with it during my stay). So, while it may not have crystal chandeliers and butlers running around, it is definitely not a student tourist level hostel. It has modern, comfortable public spaces, elevators that hold more than 2 people at a time, a restaurant with a good breakfast spread, and well-appointed guest rooms with modern amenities and AC. I really don't need more than that when I am traveling solo for business so it was perfect for me given that set of circumstances. As a comparison, I have stayed at a 5-star Rome hotel which was absolutely a step up in terms of service, luxury features, and a sense of a personal attention. But when I am alone on business, that level of service is not necessary and can feel uncomfortable to me. There are plenty of cafe's and restaurants within a 10 min walk and it is a reasonable walk to attractions such as the Opera House, the Coliseum, and the Trevi Fountain. It is also a 10-minute walk to the main terminal Rome train station and the cool, local Nuovo Mercato Esquilino if you are into that type of thing like I am. I spent early mornings walking somewhere for coffee and then through the Mercato to watch the vendors work to ready their produce and meat to be pawed over by early restauranteurs which was a cool look at the underbelly life of this great city. I really liked that this hotel is not right up against the busy street and, on at least 2 sides of the building, there are streets that are not constantly jammed with the noise of traffic. My room fronted one of the quiet sides. It is unclear to me if I was upgraded to a nicer than standard room location because of my Hilton loyalty status but I had a very quiet stay in a room that was impeccably clean and could be easily darked out during the day if I needed a restorative nap for my jet lag. The gym was reasonably appointed and open 24/7 and the wi-fi speed was top notch. I had a great stay here for the money. Based on all of this, when in Rome in the future as a solo business traveler, I would be very happy to stay here again.

That made the location extremely convenient. The hotel sits a short walk from Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Pope Francis is buried. Some areas near the main train station are often described as unsafe by Italian standards. We did not experience that near the hotel. Tourists and locals were out late, and the neighborhood stayed active into the evening. Rome is compact and easy to navigate. Most major attractions felt reachable within about 20 minutes by taxi, bus, or rail. We tried to visit the Trevi Fountain at 10:00 pm to avoid crowds. That plan failed completely(see pic). It was packed. Locals eat later than in the U.S., and many parts of the city stay busy well into the night. Restaurants remain open late. A note for U.S. travelers. European hotel rooms run smaller for the price. Even using Hilton points, our room would have cost close to $700 per night USD and felt small. The hotel offers a pleasant rooftop bar and a spacious lobby with multiple seating areas. The buffet breakfast was a solid, comfortable way to start the day. It was included for us as Hilton Diamond members. I am unsure of the cash price. Overall, the location and amenities make this a smart pre-cruise choice, especially for travelers relying on rail connections.

The hotel is a beautiful structure and while a bit dated in some areas the overall appearance is very good and old world like I expected. Our room was very nice though there was no place to sit and read as the only chair was at a desk and another side chair that was not practical for reading. I would recommend they consider that. The breakfast buffet is one of the best I ever experienced in all my years of traveling with so many options you cannot possibly try them all. The omelette chef was so accommodating and friendly. We had lunch there the day we arrived, breakfast each day and even decided to dine there for dinner one night instead of going out. All the servers went above and beyond for us and made us feel so welcome. They have live music that is very classy and works great for the environment of the hotel. We saw several different duos for evening and breakfast services. We spent three nights in this hotel before we boarded our cruise ship and really enjoyed every minute there.
